CAPTAIN M. D. MASSIE

Was born in Pittsfield, Pike county, Illinois, January 21st, 1838, and when three years old his parents moved to Louisiana, Missouri, where they remained eleven years. In 1854, he came to New Canton, Illinois, where he has remained ever since. In 1862, he volunteered, and joined the 99th regiment Illinois infantry and served two months as a private, when he was promoted to first lieutenant and held that office for six months. He was again honored by being promoted to captain, which office, he held until the close of the war. He was frequently appointed to rank of honor while in the service, such as quarter-master, commissary, adjutant general, etc.; but never lost sight of his own company, being with it in every engagement. He was mustered out of service and received his honorable discharge at Springfield, Illinois, on the 25th day of August, 1865. He immediately returned home to New Canton, and engaged in the general mercantile business, and has remained in active and prosperous business ever since. In 1866 he was married to Miss Mary E. Morey, of New Canton, Illinois. They have had two children.

Capt. Massie was the first police justice of New Canton, in 1869 — the year it was incorporated. He is yet a young man both in years and business; but with the ability, moral integrity, and the high standing he bears in his vicinity, who can doubt his success.
