HON. HUGH L. SUTPHIN, M. D.


Was born in Hunterdon county, New Jersey, July 13th, 1807. He was the second son of Abraham Stuphin. He received his literary culture in Flemington, New Jersey. He is also a graduate of Rush medical college, Philadelphia. The venerable Dr. McClellan was his preceptor. After finishing his studies, he removed to Griggsville, June 2d, 1836. Soon after, he came to Perry, and there engaged in the practice of his profession. In October, 1841 he married Jane Edom, of Naples, Illinois. They raised three daughters. In 1846 the Doctor was elected to a seat in the senate of Illinois, from Pike county. He was afterwards twice re-elected to a seat in the legislature; he then returned to Perry, Illinois, where he continued his former business. He died November 8th, 1868, and was buried with the honors of Masonry. His family are yet residing in Perry. His daughter, Mrs. Fifield, is post mistress at that place.
