WILL OF WILLIAM GORRELL, d. 1804Berkeley Co., VA, now WV, Will Book 3, page 644, transcribed & contributed by Linda Quick In the name of God, amen, I William Gorrell of Berkeley County and State of Virginia do make and constitute this my last will and testament in _____ following to wit, imprivius, I give and devise to my son James Gorrell the tract of land he lives on in Jefferson County to him and his heirs forever subject to the payment of fifty pounds Penn[Pennsylvania] Currency which he is to pay to my son William when he arrives to the age of of twenty-one years. ITEM: I give and devise to my son Joseph Gorrell all that part of my home plantation which lies on the West side of Opequon Creek and also that part of my said plantation which lies North and West of the following division lines run by David Hunter. (viz) from a stake in James Flagg's line, West with a meadow fence 57 poles to a ___, thence So 81 W 75 Poles to a stake in a fence corner, thence So 12 W 81 Poles to a black oak and hickory on John Vanmeter's line to him and his heirs forever, subject to certain payments & things to be done to my daughter Racheal and son William hereafter to be maintained. And also I will and bequeath to my said son Joseph one Franklin stove and one corner cupboard which stands in my dwelling house. ITEM: I give and devise to my son Jacob Gorrell all that part of my said plantation which lies East and South of the a foresaid lines run by David Hunter also my tract of land in the basseses(?) adjoining John Van Meter containing about eighty-two acres to him and his heirs forever, Subject to the payment of fifty pounds Penn Currency which he is to pay to my son William when he reaches the age of twenty-one years. ITEM: I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Chenoeth [Chenoweth] a negro boy named Sam. ITEM: I give and bequeath to my daughter Racheal Gorrell a negro boy named Peter, two feather beds and bedding, one sorrel mare, three years old, one case of drawers, one table with falling leaves, two sows, her choice of my cattle and one hundred dollars the money to be paid to her by my son Joseph Gorrell when she arrives to the age of twenty-one. ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son William Gorrell, Junr. One hundred and fifty pounds Penn Currency, fifty of which is already directed to be paid to him by my sons James Gorrell and Jacob Gorrell, and the remaining fifty pounds to be paid to him by my son _____ Gorrell and also all my personall estate of my _______ [too dark] ________ which shall remain after paying my just debts and funeral expenses. One bay colt which I bought of my son Joseph Gorrell and the bed which I usually lie upon to be kept for him the colt to be fed by my son Joseph till he the said William comes to the age of twenty-one years, and my said son Joseph is for one of the things mentioned to be done by him to board, cloath and school said William that is to board and cloth him in the manner the rest of my sons usually have been boarded and cloathed until he arrives to the age of twenty-one years and before that period to cause him to be taught to read and to write and cipher as far as the rule of three and my said son Joseph is to have use of the Nace, a negro boy, and Mary a negro woman which is hereby bequeathed among my personal property to my said son William, until William arrives to the age twenty one years in part of the consideration for his boarding, clothing and schooling. As to my son Abraham Gorrell and my daughters Ruth Quick and Hannah Quick, I have already given them as much of my estate as I think they're entitled to. It is my will that after my stock is sold my debts collected amd my personal estate. excepte negroes Beo and Mase, turned into money that the same shallbe put out to interest till my ____ son William arrives to the age of twenty-one years and then to be paid to him by my executors. Lastly, I constitute and appoint my sons Abraham Gorrell and Joseph Gorrell executors of this my last Will and Testament revoking all other wills. Intestimony hwereby I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 31st day of August 1804.
