But I do have World War I and II ancestors and relatives from my fatherís German side of the family. My Grandpa Emil Gohr served for a few months during World War I. He was away in service when my father was born in October 1918. My father, Lawrence Gohr, is also a veteran. He served in the Army-Air Force during World War II. He was stationed in France, Germany, and England. One of my dadís brothers, Alvin Gohr, was killed during the Battle of the Bulge at Liege, Belgium during World War II. Another of my dadís brothers, Robert Gohr, served in the Korean War. My Uncle Ed Faulkner who married my Aunt Lucile Gohr, and my Uncle Ernest Hansen who married my Aunt Dora Gohr, and Uncle Art Wacker who married my Aunt Florence Gohr each served in the military during World War II. Iím not sure if any of my Grandpa Gohrís brothers served in World War I or not. Possibly Uncle Otto Gohr or Uncle Herman Gohr also served. One of the cousins in Iowa, Howard Gohr, served in the army during World War I. Also some of the Voigt cousins served in World War I and II. Cousin Fred Voigt, who later lived in Tuttle, Oklahoma, served in World War I and had a wound on his lung from the fighting.
Of my first cousins on the Gohr side, I know that J. R. Hancock was in the military. He may have served in the Air Force. I also know that my cousin, Paul Gohr/Keiley served in the military. I donít know that any of the rest of my Gohr cousins have served in the military.
My motherís family (her maiden name was Harris), on the other hand, is mostly English-American with a little bit of Scots-Irish intertwined, coming from early American stock. Her family settled in colonial Virginia as early as 1611 when Captain Thomas Harris settled at Jamestown, Virginia, coming over on the ship the Prosperous. Captain Thomas Harrisís ancestry has recently come into question, so I know longer claim lineage back to English Royalty through the Harris line.
Quite a few of the other families that intermarried with the Harrises and related lines also settled in Virginia in the 1600s. John Neville came over to Maryland on the Ark and the Dove in 1634, and then his descendants also migrated into Virginia. I have 12 proven Revolutionary War patriots which have been listed with the Sons of the American Revolution which I am an active member of and a former president of the local chapter in Springfield, Missouri.
Just recently I have discovered that my SWAIN family of McNairy County, Tennessee was Quaker background and lived in Georgia and Guilford County, North Carolina before moving to Tennessee in the early 1800s. During the 1600s and 1700s this SWAIN family and families that intermarried with them all lived for years and years at Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. Some of these New England ancestors even lived in the infamous town of Salem, Massachusetts. The Swains and some other lines are proven back into England as far back as the 1300s. More research may possibly prove descent from someone involved in the Salem witch trials, or who was a Mayflower passenger. This line already has links back to English Royalty and some of the Magna Charta barons through intermarriage with the PADDOCK and SEARS families back in the early 1600s. The SEARS family intermarried with the KNYVETT family who in turn intermarried with the GREY, HOLLAND, and finally the PLANTAGENET families. That link goes back to Edward III, one of the Plantagenet Kings of England. Several of the other noble families that married into this line descend from Magna Charta barons.
I also have 2 Civil War soldiers in my direct ancestry--Henry Washington Garvin and Russell Sartain. Both of these served for the Confederacy. Also, Lewis Sartain, the first husband of my Martha (Beard) Sartain also served in the Civil War for the confederacy and died during that conflict. Lewis was a double-first cousin of Russell Sartain, who was Marthaís second husband. Lewis Sartainís younger brother, Guilford Sartain, also served in the Confederacy and was the one who wrote Martha the sad news that her husband had died. Thus all of the Revolutionary War and Civil War patriots in my direct line come from my motherís ancestry.
My Grandpa Wm. Earl Harris also served in World War I. My Uncle Bill Harris served in the Philippines during World War II and met his wife there. Also my Uncle J. D. was in the army during World War II. My Uncle Travis Barber who married my Aunt Ruby Jean Harris also served in the army and belonged to the VFW. My cousin Bill Harris III served in Vietnam and another cousin, Arie, was in the Navy. Also my cousin Brad Harris was a military policeman. Iím also pretty sure that my cousin Ed Barber and cousin Paul Semadeni may have also served in the military. Iím not sure about the rest of my uncles and cousins on my motherís side.
Currently I am a life member of the Ozarks Genealogy Society located where I live in Springfield, Missouri. My web page and the web pages of other members of the Ozarks Genealogical Society are listed on the Ozarks Genealogical Society Web Pages posted by Shirley Scott, who is the chairperson of the OGS Computer Workshop which meets once a month to discuss computers and genealogy. I am also a past president and officer of the Ozark Mountain Chapter Sons of the American Revolution which also meets in Springfield. I am also a member of the colorguard for the Ozark Mountain Chapter and Missouri Society S.A.R.
