Pvt. William Going was listed as a Civil War soldier in the 66th Indiana Infantry Regiment, according to Volume 24, Series I, page 334 in "War Department Reports." Col. Edward Prince commanding the Seventh Illinois Cavalry Regiment wrote a report describing an engagement at Ripley, Tennessee. In the report he stated that his regiment captured Lt. Col. L. B. Hovie, Seventh Mississippi Infantry Regiment and recaptured Pvt. William Going and eight others members of Company G, Sixty-Sixth Indiana Infantry Regiment who were captured at Tuscumbia Bridge, six miles south of Corinth, Mississippi by the Confederates December 27, 1863.

“Caroline J. Gowen, 71, of Fort Wayne, died Monday at Byron Health Care Center in Fort Wayne. Born in Toledo, Ohio, she was a homemaker and a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Donald H. Gowen and Douglas M. Gowen, both of Columbia City; two daughters, Dorothy M. Gowen Gause and Donna S. Gowen Crutchfield, both of Columbia City; two sisters; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, Charles Gowen died in 1995. Services at 11 a.m. Friday will be at D. O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, Fort Wayne. Burial will be in Lindenwood Cemetery.”

William Henry Gowen was born in Maine September 13, 1834, according to the research of Emily Symons Jorge, a descendant. Another source suggests that “Charleston, Maine in Penobscot County” was his birthplace. He was married in 1862 at Ft. Wayne to Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Sheridan who was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana about 1845. He was a cabinetmaker.

"Henry Gowen" was listed as the head of a household in the 1880 census of Allen County, Enumeration District 126, page 6, living at 347 West Main Street, Ft. Wayne, Indiana:

William Henry Gowen died December 11, 1913 in Visalia, California . His body was returned to Ft. Wayne for burial.

Lloyd Morris Martin Smith, son of William Martin Smith and Ida May Gowen Smith, was born in 1883 in Dewitt, Iowa in Clinton County.

Maybelle Cleora Smith, daughter of William Martin Smith and Ida May Gowen Smith, was born in Palouse City, Idaho in 1889. He lived to be "100 +four months," according to Emily Symonds Jorge.

Grover Virgil Smith, son of William Martin Smith and Ida May Gowen Smith, was born in Palouse.

Cora Belle Gowen, daughter of William Henry Gowen and Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Sheridan Gowen, was born October 14, 1868, according to her death certificate. She was married about 1887, husband’s name Ruggles. She died in Sunnyvale, California at age 97, April 17, 1965 at Santa Clara County Hospital, according to Emily Symonds George. Her death was attributed ton congestive heart failure and arteriosclerotic heart disease, according to Howard Ruggles. She was buried in Belmont Memorial Park.

Ella Gowen, daughter of William Henry Gowen and Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Sheridan Gowen, was born about 1872.

Thomas Gowen was listed as the head of a household in Enumeration District 56, page 30, Clay Township, Decatur County in the 1880 census. He apparently arrived in Indiana from Kentucky about 1878.

Died April 25, 2003, Nellie was born April 4, 1939 in Elkhart, Indiana, the daughter of Glen and Anna Mae Gowen Waterson, and had lived in Portage, Michigan since 1979. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, and had served as a volunteer for Hospice. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Hopper, in 1995.

William Harrison Goins was born about 1843 in Gibson County in the southwestern tip of Indiana to Thomas Goins, a South Carolinian. William Harrison Goins was enumerated in adjoining Pike County, Indiana in the 1860 census. After four years of service in the Union Army, William Harrison Goins was married to Lucilla "Lew" Webb about 1869. It is believed that she died about 1871.

William Harrison Goins was remarried to Laura L. Hall about 1872. It is believed that they lived in Sullivan County, Indiana from 1897 to 1904. William Harrison Goins died there February 21, 1908, according to Wanda Goins, a descendant.

Jesse Alexander Goins, son of William Harrison Goins and Lucilla "Lew" Webb Goins, was born about 1871 in Sullivan County, Indiana. He was married to Margaret Farley Gott June 6, 1897 in a double wedding ceremony with his brother, Frank M. Goins who was married to Maggie Griffith at the same time, according to Sullivan County Marriage Book R-3, page 33.

Jesse Alexander Goins died January 9, 1936 in Sullivan County, and Margaret Farley Gott Goins died there January 14, 1950, according to Wanda Goins, descendant of Indianapolis.

Fred Goins, son of Jesse Alexander Goins and Margaret Farley Gott Goins, was born and died in 1898, according to Wanda Goins.

Myrtle Goins, daughter of Jesse Alexander Goins and Margaret Farley Gott Goins, was born in 1900 in Sullivan County at Duggar, Indiana. She died in 1948.

Ethel Goins, daughter of Jesse Alexander Goins and Margaret Farley Gott Goins, was born in 1903 at Duggar. She died in 1985.

Charles Goins, son of Jesse Alexander Goins and Margaret Farley Gott Goins, was born in 1905 in Sullivan County. He died in 1982 at Linton, Indiana.

Gladys Goins, daughter of Jesse Alexander Goins and Margaret Farley Gott Goins, was born in 1910.

Frank M. Goins, son of William Harrison Goins and Laura L. Hall Goins, was born about 1873, place unknown. On June 6, 1897, he was married to Maggie Griffith according to Sullivan County Marriage Book R-3, page 33. According to Sullivan County marriage applications, the groom was "white, age 25."

They were enumerated in the 1900 census of Sullivan County, Hamilton township, living at Sullivan City, Indiana:

Eva G. Goins, daughter of Frank M. Goins and Maggie Griffith Goins, was born in December 1899, according to her enumeration in the 1900 census. On her marriage application her date of birth was shown as September 6, 1899. She was married June 9, 1917 to Clem Willis.

Daniel S. Goins, son of William Harrison Goins and "Fannie L." Hall Goins, was born April 7, 1876 in Sullivan County. He was married September 26, 1897 to Lula P. Burke. On his marriage application he was recorded as "white, age 22." Daniel S. Goins was remarried to Mattie Keller May 10, 1914, accoring to Sullivan County marriage records. He died in 1949 and was buried in Pine Creek Cemetery. Of Daniel Goins, Lula P. Burke Goins and Mattie Keller Goins more is known.

Hazel L. Goins, daughter of William Harrison Goins and Laura L. Hall Goins, was born about 1887. She was married November 26, 1904 to Ed. L. Stitt, according to Sullivan County marriage records.

Mary Stitt, daughter of Ed. L. Stitt and Hazel L. Goins Stitt, was born about 1915, probably in Sullivan County. She was married about 1936, husband's name Sirmay. In 1990, Mary Stitt Sirmay, Foundation member of Dunedin, Florida wrote, "I am a DAR member on my Stitt family side, but have neglected my Goins research, and there's not much time left, since I am 75."

Friend Aubrey Gowen, a white male, age 19 died July 28, 1919 in Washington Township, according to Gibson County Death Book H40.

Elmer Gowen was born January 12, 1875 in Gibson County of parents unknown, according to "Ancestors and Descendants of Some Early Settlers of the Evansville, Indiana Tri-State Area" by Ralph T. Kleymeyer, Jr. He was married April 6, 1904 to Florence Hornbrook who was born in 1887 in adjoining Pike County, Indiana. He died April 15, 1962 in Detroit, Michigan, and she died there October 27, 1977.

Alma Gowen, daughter of Elmer Gowen and Florence Hornbrook Gowen, was born in Gibson County January 27, 1905. She was married there about 1923 to Rollin McRoberts who was born July 30, 1902 in Gibson County.

Raymond Gowen, son of Elmer Gowen and Florence Hornbrook Gowen, was born in Gibson County June 29, 1906. He was married about 1929 to Katherine Maurer. He died April 12, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan. Children born to Raymond Gowen and Katherine Maurer Gowen are unknown.

Herschel Gowen, son of Elmer Gowen and Florence Hornbrook Gowen, was born in Gibson County September 13, 1908. He was married April 10, 1936 to Angela Hemryck.

Larna Dianne Gowen, daughter of Herschel Gowen and Angela Hemryck Gowen, was born December 11, 1937. She was married about 1960 to Kenneth Mangan who was born May 16, 19939.

Culmer Gowen, son of Elmer Gowen and Florence Hornbrook Gowen, was born in Gibson County September 25, 1910. He was married about 1933 to Frances Harper. He died December 23, 1981 in Detroit. "Culmer Fred Gowen" lived in Ft. Worth, Texas about 1966.

Freddie Elmer Gowen, son of Culmer Gowen and Frances Harper Gowen, was born May 15, 1935 in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He was married about 1958 to Joan Farrington who was born August 31, 1935. Children born to Freddie Elmer Gowen and Joan Farrington Gowen are unknown.

Mary Elizabeth Gowen, daughter of Elmer Gowen and Florence Hornbrook Gowen, was born in Gibson County February 18, 1914. She was married about 1934 to Lawrence Edward Huffman who was born February 27, 1909. They were later divorced.

Naomi Florence Gowen, daughter of Elmer Gowen and Florence Hornbrook Gowen, was born in Gibson County September 18, 1915. She was married about 1935 to Charles Elliott Mollhagen who was born Sepember 13, 1912. She died April 1, 1977 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

James Arthur Gowen, son of Elmer Gowen and Florence Hornbrook Gowen, was born in Pike County July 17, 1919. He was married about 1946 to Doris Louise Phillips who was born June 16, 1920.

Geneva Jewel Gowen, daughter of Elmer Gowen and Florence Hornbrook Gowen, was born in Pike County February 6, 1924. She was married about 1946 to James Lester Avery who was born July 6, 1924.

Frederick Gowen died at age 75 August 31, 1872 in Gibson County, according to Indiana death records.

Mrs. Peggy S. Gowen, age 50, died November 27, 1999 at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis of heart failure, according to here obituary in the “Evansville Courier” of November 29, 1999.

“She was a nurse, having worked for Dr. Henry Peters in Oakland City, Indiana since 1989, and formerly for Wirth Regional Hospital for 18 years. She was a member of Winslow United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 31 years, Joe Gowen; a daughter, Suzanne Gowen at home; a son, Christopher Gowen of Oakland City; her parents, Robert and Dorothy Burnett of Oakland City; a brother, Barry Burnett of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren, Ethan Gowen and Madison Gowen.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lamb-Basham Memorial Chapel, with burial in Montgomery Cemetery.”

GRANT COUNTY, INDIANA

Daniel Gowan was born about 1823, place and parents unknown. He was accidentally shot and killed August 18, 1894, according to his death notice published in “The Warren Republican,” Thursday, August 23, 1894:

“Daniel Gowan, an old soldier living near the brick works was accidentally shot by a comrade from the Home, Satur-day morning, and died Sunday morning of his injuries. He was 71 years old.”

Stephen M. Gowen, a farmer, was listed in the 1901-02 Grant County Directory as the owner of 79.5 acres located near Swayze, Indiana.

GREENE COUNTY, INDIANA

James R. Goin was listed in the 1880 census of Greene County, Indiana, Enumeration District 293 page 19, Beech Creek Township. The family was composed of:

Jeremiah Gowan was born about 1801, place and parents unknown. He was married to Mary “Polly” Workman in Greene County.

“Jeremiah Gawan” was married January 29, 1824 to “Polly Warkman,” according to "Indiana Marriages, Greene County, 1821-1828." It is believed that Jeremiah Gowan died about 1840.

Isaac Gowan, son of Jeremiah Gowan and Mary “Polly” Workman Gowan, was born in Greene County in 1827, according to the research of Brenda Walker Summers. Later he was living in Paris, Illinois in Edgar County, according to Hardin Walker, his cousin.

Hardin Walker was born in Greene County in 1828. He was a soldier in the Mexican War in 1847, according to Brenda Walker Summers, a great-granddaughter. He was also a soldier in the Civil War and left a diary recording his experiences. On the cover of the diary he specified that in the event of his death, he wanted the diary to go to his wife, Mariah Elizabeth Bockover Walker “presently living in Paris, Illinois.” He also specified that if his wife was not able to receive the diary that it was to go to his cousin, Isaac Gowan of the same town.

Brenda Walker Summers wrote, “I think the Gowan connection came from Judith Burch Gowan Walker, the mother of Hardin Walker. She worked with Sanford Gowan and Christopher Burch to take care of Jeremiah’s sons, both under 14 years of age [when he died]. Apparently the mother of Judith Burch Gowan Walker was a Burch, and then somehow the Gowan name came into the family, perhaps through marriage.

Hardin Walker was married to Mariah Elizabeth Bockover about 1850. Children born to them include:

Isom Gowan, son of Jeremiah Gowan and Mary “Polly” Workman Gowan, was born in Greene County in 1829.

Sanford Gowan, possibly a brother of Jeremiah Gowan was born about 1800 in Virginia. He was married about 1826, wife’s name, Comfort. Comfort Gowan was born about 1810 in Kentucky.

Rebecca Gowan, regarded as a daughter of Sanford Gowan and Comfort Gowan, was born in Indiana about 1831. She was married to Bluford Graves in 1847 in Greene County. She ap-peared at age 19 in the 1850 census, according to the research of Kathy Snow.

Rebecca Gowan Graves and her daughter did not reappear in the 1860 census of Greene County. Bluford Graves was en-umerated in the 1860 census of nearby Orange County, Indiana, but with a different wife:

James Oscar Gowen was a resident of Greene County, Indiana about 1888. Children born to James Oscar Gowen include:

George E. Gowen was born about 1888 at Linton, Indiana. He was married about 1910, wife’s name, Claudia B. She was born in Sanborn, Indiana in 1890. They moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1913. He was employed as a painter and paperhanger. Claudia B. Gowen lived in Blackwell, Oklahoma. She was married February 14, 1931 at Winfield Kansas to George E. Woodside, age 45, according to Cowley County Kansas Marriage Book A-15 page 361. Claudia B. Gowen, retired, appeared in the 1971 city directory of Tulsa as the widow of George E. Gowen, living at 3632 West 4^th Street.

Chester Lewis Gowen, only child of George E. Gowen and Claudia B. Gowen, was born 1925 in Tulsa. He was married about 1946, wife’s name unknown. He died about 1975 at age 50.

Donald Max Gowen, son of Chester Lewis Gowen, was born about 1948, probably in Tulsa. In May 1973 Donald Max Gowen lived at 1146 North Wood Avenue, Wichita, Kansas.

Marjorie Gowen, daughter of Chester Lewis Gowen, was born about 1950. She disappeared about 1970, leaving no trace. Her brother, Donald Max Gowen stated in an interview that the circumstances were very mysterious. Kidnapping was suspected.

Harvey Gowen, second known child of James Oscar Gowen, was born at Linton, Indiana about 1890.

Jimmy Gowen, third known child of James Oscar Gowen, was born at Linton, Indiana about 1892.

Elmer Gowen, fourth known child of James Oscar Gowen, was born about 1894, probably in Linton. In later years he was married and lived in Oakland City, Indiana where he worked for a railroad.

Hammet Gowin was married in 1838 to Elizabeth Ann Barrow in Greene County, according to Shirley Parker of Tyler, Texas. It is assumed that Hammet Gowin died prior to 1850 because Elizabeth Ann Barrow Gowin was remarried to James West there in 1850.

HARRISON COUNTY, INDIANA

Hice Gowan was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 census of Harrison County, Boone township, Enumeration District 92, page 24:

Barthena Gowin was married March 27, 1846 to Thomas Elliott, according to "Harrison County, Indiana Marriages, 1812-1854."

Hanah Gowin was married October 12, 1845 to John K. Nelson, according to "Harrison County, Indiana Marriages, 1812-1854."

HENDRICKS COUNTY, INDIANA

Hendricks County was officially formed by an act of the Indiana legislature in April 1824. It was formed from the area of Putnam County and some unorganized territory, and named Hendricks in honor of Indiana's governor, William Hendricks.

Guilford Township was one of the first places to be settled. Several families, many of them of Quaker faith, traveled from Guilford County, North Carolina and settled there, in the area around present-day Plainfield, Indiana.

In 1851 an area of Middle Township was used to form Union Township, and in 1863 an area of Brown Township was re-named as Lincoln Township, in honor of Pres. Abraham Lincoln. Hendricks County also acquired some land from Morgan County in 1868.

Alice A. Gowin was married December 18, 1873 to John W. Gorham, according to Hendricks County Marriage Book 6, page 315.

Alva Gowin was married December 20, 1906 to Nola Randolph, according to Putnam County Marriage Book 12, page 313. Children born to Alva Gowin and Nola Randolph Gowin are unknown.

B. H. Gowin was married to Elsa Newberry May 18, 1886, according to Hendrix County Marriage Book 26, page 4. B. H. Gowin was identified as “son of Stephen Gowin, white, age 30.” A confusing entry followed: “B. H. Gowin was married May 18, 1886 to Lucinda McCoun,” according to Hendricks County Marriage Book 10, page 113. One of the above marriages probably contains a transcribing error. Children born to B. H. Gowin Elsa Newberry Gowin Lucinda McCoun Gowin are unknown.

Clarence B. Gowin was married December 22, 1920 to Pauline Coffman, according to Putnam County Marriage Book 17, page 161. Clarence B. Gowin was born August 21, 1894. Children born to Clarence B. Gowin and Pauline Coffman Gowin are unknown.

Clyde A. Gowin was born November 30, 1892 to James A. Gowin and Ella Stoltz Gowin, according to Sullivan County Birth Book 8, page 238. Clyde A. Gowin was married March 19, 1912 to Ada J. Hook, according to Sullivan County Marriage Book 15, page 434. Children born to Clyde A. Gowin and Ada J. Hook Gowin are unknown.

Luther Goin was the head of a family listed in the 1880 census, Enumeration District 130, page 23 in Middle Township as:

The family of Luther Goin had apparently arrived in Indiana between 1864 and 1870 after residence in Kentucky. "Luther Gowin, white male, age 79," died October 20, 1914 in Union township as recorded in Hendricks County Death Book A-22, page 91, acording to "Hendricks County, Indiana Death Index."

Richard A. Goin was born to William and Rosa Stoker Goin December 17, 1903 in Hendricks County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” Book A-9, page 43.

Jeremiah Goings, a farmer, was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1840 census of Hendricks County, page 652:

“I am looking for information on the James Gowin family. I am descended from his daughter, Edna Ann Gowins, b. Dec. 24, 1841 in Hendricks County, Indiana. She died July 8, 1912 in Boone County, Indiana. In her obituary it states she had a sister Susanna Smith, two half-sisters Mary Dickerson and Josephine Moore, and three half-brothers of Kentucky, James Gowins, Benjamin Gowins and Caiga Gowins. Mary Dickerson at one time lived in Montgomery County, Indiana, and Susanna Smith lived in Boone County.

Edna married [1] George R. Baldwin of Boone County; [2] Sanford Hinton; [3] Ruell Johnson. She had three sons: John L. Baldwin, James W. Baldwin and Oliver Hinton.

Nearby was enumerated the household of David Going, another possible son of Jeremiah Goings, recorded on page 656:

Buck Gowin and Lou McCown Gowin were parents of a son born October 26, 1887 in Hendricks County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” book A-4, page 3. They were the parents of a daughter born June 25, 1889 in Hendricks County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” book A-4, page 38.

Herman I. Gowin was born to Edgar Gowin and E. Eggers Gowin January 2, 1917 in Hendricks County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” book A-13, page 61.

William Gowin was the head of a household enumerated in the 1880 census of Hendricks County, Enumeration District 136, page 2, Centre Township:

It is likely that Nancy Gowin was the mother of both William Gowin and Oliver S. Gowin. Apparently William Gowin had returned from Iowa about 1879.

“Oliver S. Gowins and Mary E. Blanton Gowins” were the par-ents of a son born May 23, 1883 in Hendricks County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” book A-1, page 57. A daughter was born to them November 4, 1890 in Hendricks County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” book A-5, page 26.

Oliver S. Gowin was the head of a family enumerated in Hendricks County Enumeration District 134, page 12, Marion Township:

Stephen Gowin, widower and father of 10 children, was a resident of Ripley County, Indiana when he was remarried about 1848 to Mrs. Eliza Walton, widow of John Walton who died in 1845.

In 1853 Stephen Gowin removed to Hendricks County, Indiana. He died there in 1880.

“History of Hendricks County, Indiana” which was pub-lished in 1885, mentioned these families, pp. 695-696:

“Jonathan Walton was born in Washington County, Pa., Jan. 9, 1837, a son of John and Eliza Walton, who were both natives of Pennsylvania. With their four sons they moved to Ripley County, Indiana in the summer of 1837, where the father died and was buried Jan. 9, 1845. His widow, some years later, married Stephen Gowin and to this union were born six children--Love J., deceased; Mrs. Adaline Slavins, of Kansas; Oliver and James B., residing in this township; Mrs. Cynthia A. Robbins, of Missouri, and Mrs. Anna Crose, of this township.

The children by her former marriage were--Warren, of Ripley County; William, a member of the Ninety-ninth Indiana Infantry, died in the service; Amos, served the Seventh Indiana Infantry, now living in Madison County, Iowa, and Jonathan, our subject. The family moved to Hendricks County in 1853, locating on Section 34, where Mr. Gowin died in the spring of 1880. His widow is living in this township with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Anna Crose.

Jonathan Walton lived with his mother and step-father till his marriage to Miss Cynthia Robbins, which occurred Oct. 9, 1859. After his marriage he made his home on Section 34, on part of the John Robbins homestead. He has prospered in his agricultural pursuits, and now owns a farm of 188 acres, also a fine residence property in North Salem. He is a member of North Salem Lodge, No. 158, I.O.O.F., and politically he is a Republican. To Mr. and Mrs. Walton have been born three children—Emma C., their eldest, died at the age of eighteen months; John Gavin, born March, 1863, and Bertha, born in November, 1870. Mrs. Walton's grandparents came to this county in 1833. Her father was born in North Carolina, June 16, 1809, and was there married in June, 1829, to Lydia Par-sons, who was born Dec. 27, 1808. They had eleven children, of whom six are living--Mrs. Mary Jones, of Eel River Town-ship; Mrs. Martha Davis, same township; Mrs. Cynthia Wal-ton, this township; William, this township; Mrs. Susan Rob-bins and Mrs. Josephine Davis, of Eel River Township. Those deceased are—Newton Catherine, John and Barnabas. John Robbins was a prominent citizen of this county and ser-ved satisfactorily as County Commissioner several terms. His death occurred March 5, 1881. His widow is living on the old homestead with her son-in-law, Jonathan Walton, which has been her home for fifty-two years.

Larry Slavens of Des Moines, Iowa wrote June 11, 2000 seeking information about his family. He wrote:

“My great-grandmother was Emily Adeline Gowin from Hen-dricks County, and I've been trying to find more infor-mation on her family. In a census listing she appears as Emma, and in the marriage register as Emily. She was born July 10, 1852 in Hendricks County to Stephen Gowin and Elizabeth Derry Wal-ton Gowin. Both Stephen and Elizabeth had been married be-fore. In his first marriage Stephen Gowin had 10 children, and Elizabeth in her first marriage had five children. Together they had five more.

Emily Adeline Gowin was married to William Slavens in Hen-dricks County October 27, 1872. She died January 8, 1932 in Earlham, Iowa.

William Slavens and Adeline Gowin Slavens left Hendricks County for a few years early in their marriage, living in Ne-braska and Oklahoma, before returning to North Salem, Indi-ana. They moved to Waukee, Iowa in 1914, and then to Earl-ham in March 1917 to be nearer several of their sons. Wil-liam was killed in a train accident within a couple weeks of moving to town, and both he and Adeline are buried in the Earlham Cemetery.

Adeline's obituary states she was survived by a sister, Annie Gowin Crose of Paris, Illinois and brothers Buck Gowin and Oliver Gowin of Danville, Indiana. This matches up with cen-sus listings of the family.

There are a number of other pieces of information that raise questions. In the 1870 Hendricks County census, Stephen Gowin is listed as 72 and born in Virginia, and several of the children are listed-- but not their mother Eliza Gowin. In 1880, Stephen Gowin is gone, but Eliza Gowin is back. Was she just missed in 1870? Off with some other relative?

In the Hendricks County cemetery listings, there's a Stephen Gowin buried in Turner Cemetery in 1880, but Oliver Gowin and Buck Gowin and wives, and "Mother" whose birthdate would correspond to Eliza's age in the 1880 census, are buried in Fairview Cemetery. Why would the parents be buried in separate cemeteries? Were they divorced or separated, and that's why they're not in the 1870 census together? .

In the 1870 census are two siblings that evidently preceded Adeline Gowin in death--Alaxander Gowin and Cyntha Gow-in. What became of them-- and did the enumerator spell their names right? I also note that in the 1870 census the sister of Adeline Gowin, Annie Gowin is listed as Eliza Gowin, and then in 1880 as Ann E. Gowin.

In 1900, Jesse Slavens, the son of William Slavens and Ade-line Gowin Slavens, was living in Adair County, Iowa, with his cousin John Walton. I've been trying to pin down the con-nection between my great-grandparents and the Waltons. I haven't found that link yet, but I've found other information to make me believe it was on the Gowin side.

In the Madison Township Cemetery, Madison County, Iowa, are a number of Gowin burials, several with Indiana connec-tions. It appears that several are the children of A. S. and Eliza A. Gowin There's also a William Gowin, born in 1847 in Ripley County, Indiana, who would appear to be a little too old to be the son of A. S. and Eliza Gowen.

Finally, there's an Amos Walton and Lettitia Gowin Walton. Lettitia is listed as a daughter of Allen and Eliza Logan Gowin. Amos is listed as a veteran of Company B, 7th Indiana Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. In a Civil War database, Amos Walton is listed with the unit and with a hometown of New Winchester, Indiana, which is in Hendricks County.”

Cynthia E. Gowin was married December 7, 1876 to John C. Robbins, according to Hendricks County Marriage Book 8, page 354, Bond No. 3969. Children born to John Robbins and Cynthia A. Gowin Robbins include a daughter born April 12, 1889.

HENRY COUNTY, INDIANA

Joseph Gowan and Mary Moss Gowan were the parents of a daughter born March 23, 1888 in Henry County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” Book CSS-2, page 123.

Nellie Gowens was the mother of a son born February 24, 1888 in Henry County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” Book CSS-2, page 117.

HOWARD COUNTY, INDIANA

Ethely Coldy Goin was married to John M. McLay according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” Book Ch-5, page 36. Children born to John M. McLay and Ethely Coldy Goin McLay include James Muir McLay, born May 18, 1915 in Howard County and Louis McLay, born July 15, 1908 in How-ard County.

Gertrude P. Goin was married to David M. Wolford according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” book H-11, page 106. Children born to David M. Wolford and Gertrude P. Goin Wolford include Della Marie Wolford, born January 28, 1917 in Howard County and Robert James Wolford born Octo-ber 7, 1919 in Howard County.

Darlene Goins was married in Kokomo September 2, 1943 to Joseph E. Miller who was born April 25, 1922 to George Mil-ler and Eula Cook Miller in Kokomo. He died there January 4, 2001. He was buried in Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery, according to his obituary in “Kokomo Tribune,” of January 6, 2001.

Almira Gowan was married to Oscar M. Smith in Howard County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920.” Children born to Oscar M. Smith and Almira Gowan Smith include a male child born February 4, 1901.

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, INDIANA

Floyd Goens was born to Samuel G. Goens and Nellie Grace Lakens Goens June 11, 1913 in Huntington County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” Book H-16, page 11.

George Goen was married in Jennings County, Indiana to Nancy Dixon February 8, 1838, according Alberola research.

George Goen and his wife, Nancy Dixon Goen gave a deed to 40 acres to Malichi C. Davis October 11, 1838 for $70, according to Jackson County Deed Book F, page 146.

They were the heads of a household enumerated in the 1850 census of Jackson County:

William W. Goen, son of George Goen and Nancy Dixon Goen, was born about 1839. He appeared as an 11-year-old in the 1850 census of his father's household. In 1860 he was reported at age 21 and a day laborer.

Charlotte Temple Goen, daughter of George Goen and Nancy Dixon Goen, was born about 1842. She was married February 4, 1858 to Alfred A. Hattaway, according to Jackson County Marriage Book D, page 147.

Upon the death of Alfred A. Hattaway, Charlotte Temple "Lottie" Goen Hattaway was remarried in Benton Harbor, Michigan July 4, 1880 to John Brown, according to Berrien County, Michigan marriage records. A photograph of John Brown presented him with long, straight hair and an Indian appearance.

Children born to Alfred A. Hattaway and Charlotte Temple "Lottie" Goen Hattaway include:

Minnie Etta Hattaway, twin daughter of Alfred A. Hattaway and Charlotte Temple "Lottie" Goen Hattaway, was born in 1870, according to her great-granddaughter, Sherla Alberola of Denver, Colorado. She was married to Franklin Pierce Hughes August 16, 1888 in Niles, Michigan in Berrien County. Later they removed to Misaukee County, Michigan.

"The members of the family of George and Nancy were always described as Mulatto or Colored, but today Charlotte's descendants are white. In Missaukee County they had nine children. One died in infancy. Minnie Etta and all of the children were listed in the 1910 census as "mulatto," but my grandfather, Frank Hughes was listed as white. He had light skin and blue eyes and was born of white parents, but he is listed as "Colored" on his marriage registration. Perhaps it was still illegal for whites to marry coloreds when he married Minnie Etta, so he listed himself as "Colored."

"They lived in a small farming community near Cadillac, Michigan composed mostly of Dutch immigrants. Everybody, except for a few Indian families was white. My grandmother always said that we were part Indian, but she didn't know how much or what kind. However, in later years, her brother told us that they were part Portuguese. Whatever they were, others in the community considered them "mixed." We will probably never know what they really were as all of the children have died of various kinds of cancer. They were always ashamed of their brownish skin, and I remember that my grandmother avoided the sun.

Minnie Etta died of diabetes, but she was also crippled with arthritis. My mother remembers that she had a "club foot" and wore a special shoe. Minnie Etta's twin brother, John married a Mulatto woman, Rachel A. Winburn December 25, 1895 in Berrien County. He died there in 1951. Twins seemed to run in this family. I hope that some of this will tie in with somebody else's family and be helpful to them.

Alexander Goen, son of George Goen and Nancy Dixon Goen, was born about 1843. He appeared in the 1850 census at age seven and as a 17-year-old day laborer in the 1860 enumeration.

"Alexander Goens" was married to Nancy Goens June 24, 1841, according to the Jackson County Marriage Book AB, page 263.

"Alexander Goens and Nancy J. Lamb, negroes" were married July 16, 1868, according to Jackson County Marriage Book F, page 112. Of Alexander Goen and Nancy J. Lamb Goens nothing more is known.

Daniel Goen, son of George Goen and Nancy Dixon Goen, was born about 1845. He appeared as a five-year-old in the 1850 census of Jackson County. He reappeared at age 15 in the 1860 census of Jackson County.

"Daniel Goins" was married to Sophia Mitchell June 20, 1867, according to Jackson County Marriage Book E, page 306. She was born October 25, 1851.

Sophia Mitchell Goen died December 23, 1876. A year later "Daniel W. Goens" was married to Sarah Bass on December 27, 1877. On May 30, 1835, "Daniel Goens" was married to Lethe L. Smallwood. It appears that Daniel W. Goen was remarried for the fourth time to Esther L. Stewart about 1912.

A white female baby was born to "Dan Goens and Sarah Smallwood" May 18, 1902. A white female baby was born to "Daniel Goen & .... Smallwood" March 19, 1907.

A "colored" male baby was born to "D. W. Goen and E. L. Stewart" September 4, 1906. A "colored" female baby was born to "Daniel W. Goens" and Esther L. Stewart January 27, 1914.

Margaret Goen, daughter of George Goen and Nancy Dixon Goen, was born about 1848. She appeared in the 1850 census at age 1. She reappeared in the 1860 census as a 10-year-old. She was married to Dillard Bates October 18, 1870, according to Jackson County Marriage Book F, page 358.

Asbury Goen, son of George Goen and Nancy Dixon Goen, was born about 1849. He appeared at "eight months" in the 1850 census of Jackson County. In the 1860 census he was recorded as "age 13." He was married December 13, 1870 to Isabel Cousins, according to the research of Sherla J. Alberola.

Children born to Asbury Goen and Isabel Cousins Goen include a "colored" baby boy born January 2, 1893.

E. Susan Goen, daughter of George Goen and Nancy Dixon Goen, was born about 1862. She appeared in the 1860 census as an eight-year-old.

George Goen, possibly a son of George Goen and Nancy Dixon Goen, was born about 1866. "George Goens" was married to Viola Mitchell December 21, 1891.

Hasten Goen was married to Alvira Walker December 31, 1857, according to Jackson County Marriage Book D, page 147.

Henry B. Goen was married to Lucy J. Harrison March 4, 1869, according to Jackson County Marriage Book F, page 186.

John Goens was married to Phebe Lamb May 3, 1845, according to Jackson County Marriage Book AB, page 366. Of John Goens and Phebe Lamb Goens nothing more is known.

John A. Goens was married to Eliza Ann Bird October 28, 1858, according to Jackson County Marriage Book D, page 204. Of John A. Goens and Eliza Ann Bird Goens nothing more is known.

John M. Gowen was listed as the head of a household in the 1830 census of Jackson County, page 228, in Carr Township, enumerated as:

On November 4, 1844, "John M. Goen" owned 80 acres in Section 23 and 80 acres in Section 14, according to Jackson County deed records.

Claiborne Gowings was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1840 census of Jackson County, page 99.

John W. Gowings was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1840 census of Jackson County, page 9.

George W. Gowings was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1840 census of Jackson County, page 67.

When time permits, the research of Dr. Goen will be merged with narratives of Jackson County which have been developed by other members of the Foundation.

The 1830 Census lists five Gowen families in Jackson County: Berry Gowen, in Salt Creek Township page 219, John M. Gowen in Carr Township page 228, Simeon Gowern in Salt Creek page 219, Claibourn Gayon in Salt Creek Township on page 219, and Clairbourn Gowers Senior in Salt Creek Township page 219. It is assumed that since four of these families lived near each other, as evidenced by there all being on the same page of the census, that they are related.

Because Salt Creek Township borders on Carr Township, it is possible that the fifth family was also related to the other four. Finally a William Gonn was also listed in the 1830 census in Jackson County in Redding Township on page 246.

The 1840 Census lists the following seven families in Jackson County: Elizabeth Gowens [or Gowins] on page 23, Elisha Gowings on page 9, Stephen Gowens on page 11, William Gowens on page 11, Claiburn Gowings on page 50, John W. Gowings on page 9, and George W. Gowens [or Gowins] on page 34.

On page 9 John W. Gowings was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1840 census of Jackson County:

The 1850 Census lists six families in Jackson County: Crispin Goen on page 169 Carr Township, Stephen P. Goen on page 171 Carr Township, William Goen on page 175 Carr Township, George W. Goings on page 127 Redding Township, John Goins on page 132 Redding Township, and William W. Goins page 127 Redding Township.

Note the John Thomas family was listed as family 21, the next family on the Census list, and Milo Thomas was probably related to that family. Milo appears in the middle of the Crispin Goen family listing.

Stephen P. Goen was married to Arena Stephens June 7, 1838, according to Jackson County Marriage Book AB, page 190. Stephen P. Goen and Arena Stephens Goen were enumerated in the 1850 census of Jackson County, page 171 as Household No. 42-42

The 1860 Census listed four families and one child living with another family: Nancy Goen on page 37, Stephen Goen on page 62, John W. Goen on page 112, Philip Goen on page 113, and the child on page 27. All can read and write except as noted otherwise.

Minerva Goins was listed on page 27 as 7 years old born in Indiana and post office as Old Rockford.

Concerning the 1870 census, the following is not all the census listings for Jackson County. The 1870 census includes an entry for Stephen Goen on the 2nd day of August. Their post office remains Mooney (Clearspring, Indiana on maps in the 1900s).

The 1880 Census includes entries for both Stephen Goen and John W. Goen. They moved South from Mooney (Owen Township) into the adjoining Carr Township some time after the 1870 census.

Note that the census indicates that the Jesse Durham family is living with the Stephen Goen family.

On the same page as Stephen Goen but on ln 47 the George W. Beem family is listed. In that entry John W. Goen is listed as son in law.

Stephen Goen's obituary appeared in the "Daily Republican" newspaper in Seymour, Indiana, Vol XX, No. 284, Saturday, September 26, 1896:

"Stephen Goens, an old pioneer and respected citizen, of Carr township, died Thursday, September 24, 1896, with paralysis aged 62."

"Charlotte Allen Goen's obituary was published in the “Brownstown Banner” Wednesday, Oct 1, 1924:

"Mrs. Charlotte Goens died suddenly at the home of her son, Thomas Goens, in Seymour Friday morning, aged 83 years.

Several years ago Mrs. Goens suffered a stroke of paralysis from which she never fully recovered. Friday morning about 4:30 o'clock her son noticed her breathing heavily and a physician was summoned, but she died before he reached her side. Coroner Dick Meyer was notified and at the inquest rendered a verdict that her death was caused by the infirmities of old age.

She was born in Lawrence County January 11, 1836, and moved to Jackson county a number of years ago. For the past five years she has been making her home with her children.

She is survived by eight sons and one daughter, Thomas and Homer of Seymour; William N., of Freetown; Daniel B., Louis, Franklin and Milton, of Columbus; Marshall, of Medora; Theodore, of Muncie; Mrs. Nancy Jane Butler, of Flemings. She also leaves on sister, Mrs. Lydia E. Arthur of near Clearspring, and two brothers, Ezekiel and Frank (assumed to be "of Franklin")Franklin.

Funeral services in charge of the Rev. L. W. Collar, were conducted at the residence Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. Burial in the Heighton Hill cemetery near Medora."

The marriage license for John W. Goens to Ida C. Beem was noted in “The Brownstown Banner,” Vol. XI, No. 1, on Jan 23, 1879, page 5.

The obituary of John W. Goen appeared in the “Brownstown Banner” August 16, 1900: "John W. Goen, a respected farmer living three miles north-east of Medora, died August 13, of a disease supposed to be black erysipelas."

The obituary of Ida C. Beem Goen was published in the “Brownstown Banner” of August 10, 1904:

“Mrs. Ida C. Goen, widow of the late John Goen of near Vallonia, died in Dr. Hauss' hospital at Sellersburg, Thursday, August 4, 1904. She had been in poor health for some time and had gone to the hospital for treatment, and it was found necessary to perform an operation, as a last resort. We understand that Dr. Hauss informed her of the seriousness of the operation, but as there was no hope of her recovery without it, she prepared for to have the operation performed. She was 43 years, 11 months and 9 days of age. The remains were brought to the home of her son, Hendricks Goen, at this place, and the funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Christian church, after which the remains were taken to Heighton Hill cemetery for interment. Her death was quite a shock to her many acquaintances in this community."

General note concerning John W. Goen, Elisha Goen, Crispin Goen, Stephen P. Goen, and Haston Goen. These men were born in North Carolina with the exception of John W. Goen who was reported to be born in Tennessee. Most appear in the census records in Hawkins County Tennessee before moving to Jackson and Washington Counties in Indiana. They lived near to each other in both Tennessee and Indiana and there is some evidence that they carried on commerce with each other. Elisha was the executor for Crispin. It is likely that they were brothers or cousins. Presently there probably is not enough evidence to regard them as brothers but it is not an unreasonable suggestion. Most, but not all, of their children moved on to other locations by 1870-1880.

Public records and family records indicate the following concerning the descendants of John W. Goen of Jackson County, Indiana.

John W. Goen1 was born 1804 in Tenn., and died 1850-1860. He married Sarah about. 1826.

John W. Goen was listed as head of household and had four children listed in the 1840 census. The children were not named in the 1840 census so we do not know their names directly. All the other Goen families in Jackson Co., Indiana at that time had no children that match the ages of Stephen Goen and Philip Goen or we can reason out their names from the 1850 census. Further, Philip lived very close to his father's house as indicated by entries that adjoin in the 1850 census. Additionally, Stephen also lived near John W. Goen but not as close as Philip. As a result Stephen and Philip are regarded as children of John W. Goen.

Walter Goen shows up in the Jackson Co. deed book as selling land on Dec 19, 1859. Walter is probably one of John W. Goen's sons for whom we do not know their names.

In the 1840 census John W. Goen had one male listed as under 5 years of age, three boys and one girl under 10 but 5 or more years, and one boy under 15 and 10 or more years.

On Sept 28, 1844 John W. and "Sarah Sally" sold land to John Day as recorded in the Jackson Co. deed book "I" page 320.

On mar 17, 1845 John W. Goen sold land to Margrette Gregg as recorded in the Jackson Co. deed book "I" page 456. The property was described as NE NN NW 23, 6, 2.

On Oct 9, 1847 John and Sarah sold land to W Stipp as recorded in the Jackson Co. deed book "K" page 66.

John Goen (John W.1) was born Jan 15, 1832 in Indiana16, and died Sep 16, 1881 in Campbellsburg, Indiana; buried in Hopi Cemetery. He married Eunice Brown Mar 31, 1853, daughter of Joshua Brown and Hannah Kidder.

William Jasper Goen, son of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born September 26, 1953. He was married to Eliza Coulter October 30, 1873 in Washington County, Indiana. Children born to William Jasper Goen and Eliza Coulter Goen are unknown.

An individual of the same name appeared in nearby Monroe County, Indiana in 1909. "Jasper Gowens" and Mrs. C. Rich-ardson Gowens were the parents of a daughter born May 23, 1909, according to Monroe County, Indiana Birth Book 26, page 29.

"Mrs. Gowens," white female, died May 23, 1909 in Bloom-ington, Indiana, according to Monroe County Death Record Book H-19, page 17. The death date is the same as the birth date above, suggesting that Mrs. C. Richardson Gowens died in childbirth.

Milton Goen, son of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born January 2, 1856. He died in Kansas.

Laura Goen, daughter of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born April 9, 1858.

Alma Goen, daughter of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born born August 19, 1862. She was married to Adolph Robertson October 25, 1885 in Washington County.

James Wesley Goen, son of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born October 16, 1863.

Julia Ann Goen, daughter of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born October 27, 1868. She was married about 1887, husband’s name Morris.

Rufus Goen, son of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born April 2, 1871. He died April 11, 1939 and was buried in the Hopi Cemetery.

Louisa Goen, daughter of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born January 2, 1873. She was married to Elias Smith, June 30, 1894 in Washington County.

Ebeneezer Goen, son of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born October 3, 1875 in Washington County. He died there April 10, 1897.

Amy Goen, daughter of John Goen and Eunice Brown Goen, was born August 1, 1879 and died May 2, 1880.

Philip Goen (John W.1) was born 1835 in Indiana, and died about. 1880. He married Sophronia Sawtell Jul 24, 1851 in Washington Co., Indiana, daughter of Solomon Sawtell and Phoebe ?___?. He married Matilda Goen Jun 22, 1856 in Washington County, Indiana, daughter of Crispin Goen and Lucinda.

This family moved to Arkansas where Phillip operated a ferry boat on the Arkansas River for 10 years then moved to Lawrence Co. Missouri. Here William Harvey marred Ada Emoline Eoff who may have been part Indian.

Stephen Goen (John W.1) was born 1837 in Indiana, and died Sep 24, 1896 in Jackson County, Indiana; probably buried in Heighton Hill Cemetery. He married Charlet Allen Jun 4, 1855 in Jackson County Indiana, daughter of Lewis Allen and Lydia.

Stephen Goen's birth can be projected back from census data. However, the 1860 census data indicates that he was 23 years old making his birth year 1837. The 1880 census data indicates he was 44 years old which would put his birth in 1836.

Stephen Goen bought land from Link Gullian and wife on Sept 7, 1880 for $50. This sale was recorded in the Jackson Co. deed book "16" page 253. The land is described as W NW 9, 6, 6, ?? acres and as being in the Butler Addition of Seymour, Indiana.

Steven Gowen bought land from William McNeil and wife on April 10, 1882 for $100. This sale was recorded in the Jackson Co. deed book "18" page 108. The land is described as NN SW SE 23, 5, 3, 20 acres.

Stephen Goen and wife Goen sold land to John H. Mills on Aug. 14, 1883 for $225. This sale was recorded in the Jackson Co. deed book "19" page 444. The land is described as 23, 5, 3, 9 acres and as being in Seymour, Indiana.

His death can be projected from Jackson Co., Indiana probate records which indicate he died in 1896 assuming that the probate filing was the same year as his death. The probate entry is dated as filed November 4, 1896 and the court date as November 17, 1896.

Stephen Goen's obituary was published in "The Daily Republican" newspaper of Seymour Indiana, Vol XX, No. 284, Sat September 26, 1896. The paper reports that he died on September 24, 1996 with paralysis aged 62. This age puts his birth in about 1834 which is slightly at variance with some census data. His wifes' death was reported in the Brownstown Banner in 1924.

Given that his father was John W. Goen and living in Jackson Co., Indiana when he was born, it is reasonable to assume that he lived his whole life in Jackson Co., Indiana. It was common for the son to name his first born after his father and this further supports the assertion that John W. Goen of 1804 birth was Stephen's father. The first sons name and the distribution of children in the 1840 census both provide strong support that John W. Goen was Stephen's father. Of course a family Bible or official birth record would be even more definitive but they do not exist as far as we can tell.

John Herbert Goen (Hendricks4, John W.3, Stephen2, John W.1) was born Feb 1, 1902 in Jackson County Indiana, and died Jan 6, 1989 in Hospital, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana. He married Bessie Emmons Mar 8, 1924, daughter of Festus Emmons and Blanche McMillan.

He reported his occupation to have included activities ranging from laborer, heavy equipment operator, truck driver, carpenter, and farmer. He built a log cabin before World War II and lived in it until very shortly before his death. On the same 40 acres of property that he built the log cabin he built a two story chicken house which would hold 3000 broiler chickens. The chicken house was completed in the early 1950s and operated most of that decade. He eventually got out of the broiler business when market structure and technology changed and made it unprofitable. He converted to raising chickens for eggs for a few years until the market structure and technology for egg production changed. Before World War II he ran for office once for a township or county position and gave up a political career with his defeat. He completed a high school education at Clearspring High School and attended one semester at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, and wrestling. The semester at Indiana University was based on a scholarship for wrestling. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to address him as "Herb" as opposed to father, dad, or grandpa. He had considerably more physical strength than average until his later years. He enjoyed television starting in the 1950s or early 1960s. Also, he had the experience of flying in an airplane during World War II while he was working at Freeman Field, Seymour, Indiana. His family attended the Brownstown Nazarine Church, Brownstown, Indiana.

Robert was born so that he and his generation experienced the Great Depression of the 1930s as children and teenagers. He attended the Vallonia school system for part of his grade school education. He completed the rest of his education with a high school diploma from Clearspring High School. He played baseball and basketball while in High School. He was drafted into the Army for World War II and served in a machine gun platoon in the Pacific theater. He reports that his unit (the Americal Division) made three beachheads in the Pacific and was earmarked for the spearhead of the invasion of the main Japanese islands. This was not required probably as a direct result of the use of atomic weapons. He took up the trade of bricklaying soon after returning from the war and stayed with that trade until his retirement. He and his father built a concrete block house that he still lived in as this is written. The house was improved with stucco, three rooms added or expanded, and then eventually brick veneered. Before he retired as a bricklayer, he worked on all sorts of commercial construction to include: school houses, hotels, post offices, office buildings, and factories. While he formally retired around the age of 63, he continued to work for many years as a bricklayer. He would take jobs that included brick veneering houses, laying concrete blocks for basements, laying flues and fireplaces. His hobbies include fishing, morels mushroom hunting, quail and rabbit hunting, and gardening. He regularly attended Wrays Christian Church and eventually moved to Brownstown Christian Church.

Medical Information: Had reoccurring problems with pneumonia after World War II. During his military service they delayed his discharge until he recovered from malaria.

Pete served in the Army Air Force in World War II. Then worked several years for the Kroger grocery company before owning his own grocery. He worked for Kroger and owned his own store while living in Seymour, Indiana. He also worked as a police dispatcher and as a used car salesman.

Melvin Keith Goen (John Herbert5, Hendricks4, John W.3, Stephen2, John W.1) was born Nov 21, 1936. He married Velma Mae East, daughter of Ira East and Lottie Terrel.

Keith worked as a welder on gas lines for wholesale distribution. He eventually tired of the travel required for welding in the gas lines for wholesale distribution business and turned to welding and repair of residential gas distribution in the city of Bedford, Indiana until retiring. After retirement he worked in hardware store as a salesman and then in publication distribution.

Velma completed study and licensing for registered nurse. She worked in the hospital at Bedford, Indiana. Eventually she was promoted to the head surgical nurse and served in this position for many years before retiring.

His first operational assignment was on B-52 bombers with the 23rd Bomb Squadron, 5th Bomb Wing, Minot AFB, Norht Dakota. Next he was assigned (1978-1980) to a training detachment on Guam island in the Pacific to Det 24, 1 CEVG, Ritidian Point, Guam. The last nine months on Guam he was an executive officer in the 43rd Bomb Wing, Andersen AFB, Guam. Transfer back to the states was at Space Division, Los Angeles Air Force Station, CA. There he worked three years (1981-1984) in the global positioning system program office on ground systems and user equipment. Then he worked two years in the Space Division Office of Plans on what eventually became called the National Aerospace Plane project. His final assignment (1986-1990) in the Air Force was at Griffis AFB, Rome, New York. There he was assistant division director for a computer software research division. While in the Air Force he completed a masters degree in business administration at the University of North Dakota (1978) and a doctorate of business administration at the United States International University, San Diego, Califorina (1986). Upon retiring from the Air Force, he was accepted for the position of Dickinson Associate Professor of Business at the Oklahoma Baptist University of Shawnee, Oklahoma. He still had that position at the time this was being written. His hobbies include gardening and playing racquetball. He and his family attend the Foundation Christian Church of Shawnee, Oklahoma.

This is regarded as the same Crispin, 12 born in Tennessee, on page 169 family number 20 with his parents in the 1850 census of Jackson County, Indiana. In the 1860 census he is 21 years old and still claims to be born in Tennessee. He is residing in Vernon Township at the Livonia post office. He is reported to be a farm laborer with $200 of personal property. Literate and the head of the household but is living with the Barnett Starks family in the same dwelling. Mr. Starks is also listed as the head of the household. Ethnicity reported as white.

On page 124 family number is 307 with post office Cambellsburgh lists Elizabeth P. Goens. She is living with the Solomon Sawtell family. She is 8 years old, ethnicity: white, literate and attending school within the last year. She is listed as the head of household. As a note of interest, this is the same Solomon Sawtell who's daughter married Philip Goen.

On page 168 family number is 639 with post office Drusilla lists Sarah Goen. She is living with the John Chambers family and her occupation is listed as "hired domestic." Her age is 21, white, birth place Indiana, and literate.

Elisha Green Goen, regarded as the son of William Goen, was born about 1806 in North Carolina. He was married about 1829, wife’s nameMary “Polly.” On May 20, 1839, bought 40 acres described as Township 6 North, Rng 3 East, Sect 34, W E in Jackson County, Indiana. This property lies two miles east and one mile south of Clearspring, Indiana.

On Jan 29, 1844 Elisha Green Goen and Mary “Polly” Goen sold the 40-acre tract to James F. Allen. On November 25, 1853, he bought 32 acres described as Township 4 North, Rng 3 East, Sect 7, E NW and also 31 acres described as Township 4 N, Rng 3 E, Sec 7, NE W. Both were located two miles south and three miles west of Medora, Indiana.

On Deember 2, 1853, he bought 32 acres described as Town-ship 4 North, Rng 3 East, Sect 7, NE NW located two miles south and three miles west of Medora.

On Aug 7, 1854 Elisha Green Goen sold land near Dudley Town, Indiana to Vincent Chambers, according to Jackson County Deed Book G, page 735. The transaction was re-corded in the County Clerk’s office in Brownstown, Indiana.

On December 22, 1855 Elisha Green Goen and wife sold 80 acres to J. A. Weddle, according to Jackson County Deed Book P, page 611.

Homer (Benson?) Goen was born July 24, 1860 and died December 3, 1918. Homer Goen was married to Louisa Jane “Lucy” Thomas Sept 14, 1889. They were buried in the Leesville, Indiana cemetery. Louisa Jane “Lucy” Thomas Goen was born March 6, 1864.

However, on the 1900 census there is listed what looks to be labeled a step-daughter. The three children I know about are: Ralph (who died in Johnson City, TN), Mabel Blanche (my grandmother), and Lula (b. 3 Dec 1894 and d. 23 June1903). Also, on the census there was a Mary, age 71, listed as mother, and another listing was of a Lucy Thomas, mother-in-law. This was the name of Jane's mother.

John Goins, a descendant of John Goins, Jr. of Henry County, Virginia, was married in Jackson County in 1845 to Phebe Lamb, according to the research of Dr. G. C. Waldrep III. Children born to John Goins and Phebe Lamb Goins are unknown.

JASPER COUNTY, INDIANA

James Goin was born about 1848, place and parents unknown. He was married about 1869 to Hattie Amos. James Goin died August 1, 1926 at age 78, according to Jasper County Death Book 10, page 290.

Frances Fern Goin, daughter of James Goin and Hattie Amos Goin, was born about 1898. She was married about 1918, husband's name Neier. She died May 5, 1963 at age 65, according to Jasper County Death Book 12, page 13.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, INDIANA

Harvey Goins was born in 1897, place and parents unknown. He was married about 1919 to Minnie Perkinson in Jefferson County. Harvey Goins had a brother, Archie Goins.

Asenath Goings was married July 10, 1855 to Thomas Thixton, according to "Jennings County, Indiana Marriages, 1801-1867."

Elhannen Goings was married September 4, 1865 to Sarah A. Dixon, according to "Jennings County, Indiana Marriages, 1801-1867." Children born to Elhannen Goings and Sarah A. Dixon Goings are unknown.

James B. Goings was married December 9, 1846 to Cena Owen, according to "Jennings County, Indiana Marriages, 1801-1867."

"James Gowens," whose residence was in Jennings County, enlisted in Company A, Fifty-Fifth Massachusetts Infantry Regiment June 21, 1863, according to Massachusetts Civil War records. At his enlistment he was listed as a mechanic, age 19. He was wounded November 30, 1864 at Honey Hill, South Carolina. He was discharged August 29, 1865.

Susan Goens was married to James Sutor according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” book CH-1, page 142. Children born to James Sutor and Susan Goens Sutor include a male child born September 1, 1891 in Johnson County.

Louisa Goen was born in Tennessee in December 1835 of parents unknown, according to Michael Johnson, a descendant. She was married about 1864 to Elisha G. Johnson who was also born in Tennessee, in December 1835. She died about 1877 in Indiana. Elisha G. Johnson was remarried March 17, 1878 in Lawrence County to Ellen Collins.

Sarah Goins was married in 1878 to William Penn, son of John Wesley Penn in Ripley County. William Penn had been working in Indian Territory as an interpreter on the Osage Reservation. He took his bride to Oklahoma, but later removed to Grayling, Michigan where he died in 1911. The widow and her children returned to in the 1920s and lived in the Ponca City, Oklahoma area. About 1930, the family returned to Michigan, according to Dr. G. C. Waldrep III.

Stephen Gowens, a farmer, was listed as the head of a household in the 1820 census of Ripley County, page 75:

Mary Gowin was married July 18, 1849 in Ripley County to John B. Barton, according to the research of Walter L. Money.

Sarah J. Barton, daughter of John B. Barton and Mary Gowin Barton, was born April 16, 1850 in Ripley County. She was married April 21, 1874 in Hendricks County, Indiana to John William Money. Walter L. Money wrote:

“They lived aound Danville, Indiana and had at least 11 children, which included my granddad Oscar Silas Money and his twin Odous Paul Money.

I have a copy of page 2 of "The Republican" of John Money's death, saying his wife was known as ‘Miss Sally Barton’ and was moving to Brownsburg, IN to be near her kids. The paragraph also says ‘the deceased was a son-in-law of Uncle John Barton, of this city and a prosperous farmer.’

I have Sarah Barton's dad as John B Barton who married Mary Gowin 18 July 1849 in Ripley County, Indiana.”

Milton T. H. Gowing was married to Sarah Meek March 30, 1833, according to "Ripley County, Indiana Marriages, 1824-1843." Children born to Milton T. H. Gowing and Sarah Meek Gowing are unknown.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, INDIANA

Maxine E. Goins, 79, of South Bend died March 24, 1999 in Lakeland Medical center of natural causes. Survivors include her husband, Jack Goins; two daughters, Jacqueline Goinos Hammond of Coloma and Jill Goins Carrizales of Gastonia, North Carolina; a son, Jan Goins of West Olive, Michigan; and two sisters, Frances Porter of Berrien Springs and Dorist Briney of Sodus, Indiana. Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, Sodus.

Rachel I. Goins, 76 died of natural causes December 11, 1998 in Goshen General Hospital. Survivors include three sons, Coleman Taylor of Bristol, Owen Stewart of Elkhart and David Stewart of El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Juevta Hancock of Detroit and Ludean Miller of Arizona; and two brothers John Carner of Elkhart and Paul Carner of Shoshen. Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Westbrook-Metz & Clouse Funeral Home.

Sarah Ann Gounds was born in the 1840s near South Bend, according to a great-granddaughter, Judy O'Flaherty of Ohio State University. She was married in 1864 to David Barnhill in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and lived there until she died in 1882.

John Goins was married April 9, 1903 to Emma Anderson, according to Shelby County Marriage Book 17, page 38. Children born to John Goins and Emma Anderson Goins are unknown.

M. W. Gowen, white male, was married July 8, 1902 to C. H. Campbell, according to Shelby County Marriage Book H, page 10. Of M. W. Gowen and C. H. Campbell Gowen nothing more is known.

Isaac Goans, free colored, appeared as the head of a household of two people in the 1830 census of Sullivan County, page 190:

John Goens, son of Joseph Goens, was married May 25, 1895, according to Sullivan County Marriage Book R-3, page 25. The bride's name was not noted. The maiden name of the mother of John Goens was Price.

Jasper Goins was married March 12, 1876 to Mary M. Nash, according to Sullivan County marriage records. Children born to Jasper Goins and Mary M. Nash Goins are unknown.

Stella Goins was married September 22, 1893 to James A. Owings, according to Sullivan County marriage records.

Mira Goans, a widow was recorded in the 1887-88 city directory of Lafayette, Indiana as living in “w side Perry, 1 n limits. Living with her was Grant U. Goans, a farmer and Miss Nettie Goans.

R. F. Goans was a farmer living in the West Point community in the 1885-86 city directory of Lafayette. He reappeared there in the 1891 directory.

Richard Goans was recorded at “w side Foundry, 2 s Ferry” in the 1887-88 city directory of Lafayette.

Patrick Gowan appeared as delinquent in the Tippecanoe County tax list of 1843. Beside his name was written “worthless.”

Isaac Gowen was born in 1824 in Indiana. He was married in Tippecanoe County February 10, 1861 to Almina Fisher, daughter of Isaac Fisher and Martha Gee Fisher. Almina Fisher was born January 15, 1837 in Livingston County, New York.

"I remember an old man coming to our house when I was a child. We called him "Grandpa Hayward." The last time I saw him was in 1846. He was then in his 80's. This man Hayward was the father of James C. Hayward, also a girl named Nancy Hayward who in later years married a man named ‘Edwards.’ It is not known what year these children were born, but it presumed that James Hayward was born about 1820.

James C. Hayward and Hannah Marion Fisher were mar-ried in 1843. Hannah M. Fisher, my sister was born No-vember 23, 1827, in the township of Portage, Allegany County, New York. To the union were born the following children: William Willard Hayward, March 31, 1845, and Mary Hayward, born November 28, 1846. In 1849, James Hayward, in the company of two other men, left New York state to go to California where the gold rush was on, and to this day haven't been heard of. About two years later, Hannah, his wife, and the two children, along with other members of the family, the Fishers, left New York state by cov-ered wagon to Indiana. They settled in Tippecanoe County. Hannah was married second to Elijah Hill about 1851, possibly in Livingston County."

Isaac Gowen headed a household in the 1880 census of Tippecanoe County, Enumeration District 21, page 8, Tippecanoe Township, enumerated as:

Isaac Gowen, “Almira” Gowen and their son William E. Gowen were recorded in the 1891 city directory of Lafayette, Indiana, living at Battle Ground, Indiana. “Alice Gowens, domestic” lived at 131 S. 5^th Street in Lafayette, according to the 1891 directory.

Almina Fisher Gowen died November 14, 1915 in Tippecanoe County, according to the research of Adina Watkins Dyer.

Isaac Gowen was remarried December 31, 1893 to Mrs. Susannah Dunn, widow of Phillip Dunn, according to a letter written September 3, 1989 by Samar Roman of Dewey, Arizona, a granddaughter of Phillip Dunn and Susannah Dunn. Samar Roman regarded Susannah Dunn as a Cherokee. "She had only one child, my mother, when she was married to Isaac Gowen," Samar Roman wrote, "and six more were born to the second union."

In 1896 Isaac Gowen, at age 72 and Susannah Dunn Gowen, at age 66, both entered the Old Soldiers Home at LaFayette, Indiana. Both died shortly after entering the home, according to Samar Roman. She wrote, "I have written the home, and they have a record of both entering and their deaths, but that is all."

Obviously Isaac Gowen was a veteran of the Mexican War. It is unlikely that he was a veteran of the Civil War.

Children born to Isaac Gowen and Susannah Dunn Gowen are unknown. Childen born to Isaac Gowen and Almina Fisher Gowen include:

Martha Gowen, daughter of Issac Gowen and Almina Fisher Gowen, was born about 1875 in Tippecanoe County. She was enumerated as a 17-year-old in the 1880 census of her father’s household.

Isom Gowen, perhaps a twin, son of Issac Gowen and Almina Fisher Gowen, was born about 1873 in Indiana. He was enumerated as a 15-year-old in the 1880 census of his father’s household. Because of the names Isom Gowen and Sanford Gowen, it is suggested that Isaac Gowen was a descendant of either Jeremiah Gowen or Sanford Gowen of Bedford County, Virginia.

William E. Gowen, perhaps a twin, son of Isaac Gowen and Almira Fisher Gowen, was born bout 1865. He appeared in the 1880 census of his father’s household as a 15-year-old. He was reported as living at Battle Ground, Indiana in the 1891 city directory of Lafayette.

Sanford Gowen, son of Isaac Gowen and Almina Fisher Gowen, was born about 1872 in Indiana. He was enumerated at a seven-year-old in the 1880 census of his father’s household. He was married about 1896 to Lucy M. Fry. In 1919 Sanford Gowen was listed in the "Tippecanoe County, Indiana Farmers Directory:"

Alice Gowen, daughter of Isaac Gowen and Almina Fisher Gowen, was born about 1875. She appeared at age five in the 1880 census of her father’s household. “Alice Gowens, domestic ” was recorded in the 1891 city directory of Lafayette, living at 131 S. 5^th Street.

Miss Julia A. Gowens was recorded in the 1891 city directory of Lafayette living at 309 N. Walnut in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

TIPTON COUNTY, INDIANA

George W. Goin, resident of Tipton County, Enumeration District 132, page 40, Wildcat Township, was the head of a household enumerated in 1880 as:

Matilda Goin was married January 30, 1840 to Abraham Wolford, according to "Tipton County, Indiana Marriages, 1844-1856."

Barley Goens [female] was born to Bryant Goens August 28, 1882 in Vanderburg County according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” Book CH-V1, page 53.

Bryant Goin, a mulatto, lived at 303 Mulberry Street, Evansville, Indiana, according to the 1880 census of Vanderburg County. The family was listed in Enumeration District, 76, page 11, Pigeon Township as:

Of James Goin, brother of Bryant Goin, who was born about 1835 in Alabama, nothing more is known.

It is believed that Josephine Goin died between 1882 and 1890. He was remarried to Eliza Hadley about 1896.

Angela Pace Goins was listed as a daughter of James R. Pace of Evansville who died May 10, 1999 of a heart attack at his home, according to his obituary in the "Evansville Courier."

Bertha Blair Goins of Clinton, Maryland was identified as a neice of Bertha Sallis, 74, of Evansville who died September 24, 1998. The obituary in the "Evansville Courier" mentioned that Bertha Blair Goins was one of six neices and nephews reared by Bertha Sallis.

Linda Goins and Jake and Charlene Curtis of Evansville, Indiana, grandparents of Jacob Christopher "Jake" Curtis, one-month-old son of Chris Curtis and Nikki Goins Curtis of Waverly, Tennessee who died March 8, 1999 of spinal muscular atrophy. The infant died in Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee and was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sorgho, Kentucky, according to his obituary in the "Evansville Courier."

Douthitt, who was born November 24, 1903 in Warrick County. Daisy May Gowen Douthitt was born to them April 15, 1917 in Warrick County.

Georgia Gowen was born September 23, 1896 in Warrick County, according to birth certificate book H-6 page 10. She was born to Thomas Guin Gowen and Dora M. Davis Gowen.

Georgia Gowen was married to Jesse Moore according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920.” Children born to Jesse Moore and Georgia Gowen Moore include Jessie Owen Moore born April 25, 1917 in Warrick County, Genice (Mickie) Moore, born January 28, 1919 in Warrick County and Ruth Imogene (Toody) Moore was born December 6, 1920 in Warrick County.

Georgia Gowen Moore later died on June 9, 1977 at age 80. She was buried in Mapel Grove Cemetary in Boonville IN, according to a family group sheet from James O. Gowen.

James Oscar Gowen was born June 25, 1938 in Boonville, IN. He was later baptized in Tennyson IN. He married Lillian Ruth Garrison on July 16, 1960. They had 3 children. James Sheldon Gowen, born February 24, 1961; Steven Charles Gowen, born July 21, 1962; and Randall Brent Gowen born January 12, 1965. All children were born in Evansville, IN.

Randall Brent Gowen married Shirley Mae (Scales) Broshears on June 16, 1976 in Warrick County.

Kate Ethel Gowen was married to Dello F. Roberts according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920.” Children born to Dello F. Roberts and Kate Ethel Gowen Roberts include Mayme Roberts, born June 17, 1913 in Warrick County.

Mary Jane Gowen (18) was married to Robert D. Gober on October 14, 1966 in Warrick County, IN. Born to Mary Gowen Gober and Robert Gober was Robert Michael Gober on August 6, 1967 in Evansville IN. Mary Jane Gowen was later remarried to Robert Hilborn on an unknown date. Leigh Ann Hilborn was born to Mary Hilborn Gowen and Robert Hilborn on June 29, 1971, according to a family group sheet from James O. Gowen.

Laura Myrtle Gowens was married to Frank Byers according to “Indiana Birth Records Index, 1880-1920,” book CH-1, page 80. Children born to Frank Byers and Laura Myrtle Gowens Byers include Richard Byers born November 3, 1911, a female child born June 24, 1913, and John Frederick Byers born June 3, 1919.

Ellen S. McGown, 17, was married November 7, 1854 in Warrick County to James McCarty who was born in Ireland in 1828. She was born in Ireland in 1837, according to the research of a great-grandson, Milo Sutton of Hermosa Beach, California.

About 1856 they were living in Missouri. In 1864 they were living in Monmouth, Illinois in Warren County. Later they removed to Iowa. In 1870, they were enumerated in Livingston County, Missouri:

James McCarty worked in railroad construction, and the family moved around considerably. Once he moved his family by covered wagon from Illinois to Kansas, arriving there in 1878. On this trip, they brought all their household and personal effects, along with chickens and livestock, according to Milo Sutton. They followed the railroad route which was under construction. They made frequent stops along the route, and James McCarthy took his horses to work in railroad construction.

Their destination in Kansas was Lyon County, particularly in the Hartford and Emporia area. Later they followed the railroad work to Arizona Territory and settled there in Santa Cruz County about 1888. James McCarthy died there December 7, 1914, and his wife died December 28, 1914 and was buried beside her husband.

Margaret Agnes McCarty, daughter of James McCarty and Ellen S. McGown McCarty, was born about 1856 in Missouri, according to her 1870 census enumeration. She was married May 18, 1880 in Emporia, Kansas to Victor Henry Igo. Later they were divorced. She lived in Turner, Arizona. She died in April 1939 in Tucson, Arizona.

George R. McCarty, son of James McCarty and Ellen S. McGown McCarty, was born in 1859 in Missouri, according to his enumeration in the 1870 census in which he was recorded as an 11-year-old. From 1882 on, he lived on a ranch in the Huachuca Mountains of Arizona. He died October 28, 1928 and was buried in Holy Hope Cemetery in Tucson.

Mary Ellen McCarty, daughter of James McCarty and Ellen S. McGown McCarty, was born November 12, 1864 in Monmouth, Illinois, according to Milo Sutton. Her 1870 enumeration showed her birth in Missouri. She was married to Joshua Leroy "Jack" Sutton June 1, 1882 in the home of his brother, Ben M. Sutton of Hartford, Kansas. She died July 4, 1951 in Emporia, Kansas and was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Hartford.

William Goen was born in 1771 in North Carolina, according to the research of Michael Johnson, a descendant. He was married about 1794, wife’s name unknown. They removed to Hawkins County, Tennessee about 1813.

William Goen was enumerated in the 1830 and 1840 census returns of Hawkins County. Adjoining him was his son-in-law James T. Johnson. It is believed that his wife died about 1845 in Hawkins County.

His sons, Crispin Goen, Elisha Goen, George Goen and Haston Goen, were recorded near him in the 1830s in the Newman’s Ridge, Blackwater and Shelby Creek communities.

In 1849 William Goen removed to Jackson County, Indiana, probably influenced to move there by other members of his family. He was enumerated in the 1850 census of Jackson County, living in the household of his son-in-law James T. Johnson.

John Waller Goen, son of William Goen, was born about 1804 in North Carolina. In 1835 he was living in Jackson County, Indiana. In that year he received a land patent signed by Pres.

Andrew Jackson for 69 acres in Jackson County. In 1838 he received an additional 58 acres in a patent signed by Pres. Martin Van Buren. In 1848 he received a land patent for 80 acres signed by Pres. James K. Polk.
