William Blassingame, son of Capt. James P. Blassingame and Mary Gowen Blassingame, was born in Greenville County, South Carolina in 1801. He was married there in 1829 to Mary Berry Earle Prince of Greenville County, believed to be a niece of Miriam Earle who was married to John William Gowen, the uncle of William Blassingame. In 1830 he was enumerated in the federal census as "William Blassingame, Esquire," suggesting that he held public office or else was a man of some importance in the community.
William Blassingame was given power of attorney by William G. Woodson of Pendleton County, Kentucky on May 17, 1839. William G. Woodson is regarded as a son of Tucker Woodson and Elizabeth Gowen Woodson and a first cousin of William Blassingame, both being grandsons of Maj. John “Buck” Gowen.
The Power of Attorney was to “loving friend and relation William Blassingame of Greenville County, South Carolina” relative to lands adjoining Henry B. Prince, George Dill and others, according to Greenville County Deed Book T, page 89.
Peggy B. Chapman reports that on July 13, 1839 William Blassingame sold this land located on the north side of Tyger River for William G. Woodson to Jefferson Barton. The transaction for the land “known as the James Adams tract & where Philip Ross now lives, bounded by River on the south, George Dill, Reuben Barrett, dec’d, James Barrett and Henry B. Prince,” according to Greenville County Deed Book T, page 91.
In 1840 he was Commissioner of the Greenville District of the 1840 federal census and was elected sheriff of Greenville County shortly afterwards.
Early in their married life William Blassingame and his wife made their home with his mother. Later he operated a grocery store in partnership with his brother-in-law, James P. Foster "next door north of the courthouse in the Village of Greenville," according to the research of Joel Chan Edmondson, a descendant.
Shortly after dissolving his partnership with Foster he died November 28, 1845 in Greenville County, preceding his mother in death by five years. His probate file was recorded in Greenville County Record Book E, page 152, according to Adaline Evans Wynn who transcribed notes from them August 10, 1914. The estate was settled in 1856.
Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame was given a bill of sale from the estate for "one large family bible," February 6, 1846, according to Greenville County Return Book B, page 59. Appraisers set the value of the estate at $3,138.06. The widow and G. F. Towns were appointed administrators. G. F. Towns is unidentified, however there were several marriages between the Towns and Blassingame families, and it is possible that G. F. Towns was a cousin to the widow.
Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame appeared as the head of a household in the 1850 census of Greenville District. The family was listed as:

"Mrs. Mary Foster [formerly Mrs. Blassingame], administratrix of William Blassingame, received order from Spartan Goodlett, ordinary of Greenville District to repair to Mary Blassingame's, widow of James Blassingame, deceased, and appraise estate, goods, chattels, etc of latter, as Mary shall direct; same appraisement to be made on or before next 23rd of August."
The warrant was issued June 23, 1851. Witnesses included Absalom Thompson, John Lucas [uncle of the widow], Elijah Thompson, Joseph Smith and John Whitten, Esq. Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame and seven children petitioned the court for administration, stating that William Blassingame left personal effects amounting to $600, according to Greenville County Record Book E, page 172.
Before 1855 Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame was remarried to James P. Foster, her husband's former partner.
Joel Chan Edmondson wrote, "A letter in the administration papers of the estate of William Blassingame, deceased, dated January 28, 1856, from his son James W. Blassingame gives the following information concerning the heirs of the estate."
". . . My Mother, Mary Foster, Consort of James P. Foster, lives in Greenville District, S.C; Elizabeth Clayton, wife of Reuben Clayton, Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia; James W. Blassingame, Hendersonville, N.C; Sallie E. G. Whitted, wife of Dr. W. D. Whitted, Hendersonville, N.C; William Blassingame, Versailles, Missouri; Lydia A. wife of Robert Liles, Polk County, N.C. [Post Office Sandy Plains]; Thomas B. Blassingame, Polk County, N.C, Sandy Plains; and John G. E. Blassingame, Atlanta, Georgia."
Luther Barnett, resident of Gowensville, South Carolina, wrote to Adaline Evans Wynn about 1920 that Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame Foster sold her land in the latter part of 1856 and removed with her husband to Arkansas "where some of her daughters lived." She died in the Monticello, Arkansas area in Drew County.
After her death, James P. Foster removed to Dallas, Texas and settled just northeast of the town, according to Joel Chan Edmondson.

In 1849 she was married to Reuben Clayton, according to Mrs. P. F. Hyatt, a descendant of Monticello, Arkansas. Before 1856 the Claytons removed to Atlanta, Georgia.
Sarah Earle Y. "Sallie" Blassingame, daughter of William Blassingame and Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame, was born in 1833, according to her tombstone in Hendersonville, North Carolina cemetery. She was married about 1855 to Dr. William Davis Whitted and resided near the residence of her brother, James W. Blassingame. Dr. William Davis Whitted died in 1887, and she died in 1891.

Natalie Whitted, daughter of Dr. William Davis Whitted and Sarah Earle Y. "Sallie" Blassingame Whitted, was born in 1864. About 1884 she was married to William B. Price and removed to Chicago, Illinois where she died in 1923 without children.
Lydia Earle Whitted, daughter of Dr. William Davis Whitted and Sarah Earle Y. "Sallie" Blassingame Whitted, was born about 1866. He remained unmarried and lived in Hickory, North Carolina, about 50 miles northeast of Gowensville, South Carolina.
William Blassingame, Jr, son of William Blassingame and Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame, was born about 1835 at the home of his grandmother in Greenville District, South Carolina. In a letter written by his brother James W. Blassingame January 28, 1886 to "Col. Jones" it was mentioned that William Blassingame, Jr. lived at Versailles, Missouri. The letter is filed with the probate papers of William Blassingame.
Lydia Anna Blassingame daughter of William Blassingame and Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame, was born December 22, 1837 in Greenville District. She was named for her maternal grandmother, Lydia Maverick Earle Prince and her great-great grandmother, Anna Sorrell Earle, according to the research of Joel Chan Edmondson, a descendant.
She was mentioned as a resident of Greenville County in the probate records of her uncle, Winn Blassingame when his estate was administered in Perry County, Alabama November 18, 1852.
She was married about 1855 to a wealthy man, Robert Liles, son of John Liles and Agnes Hester Liles. In 1856 they lived at Sandy Plains, North Carolina. Robert Liles had received a tract of land on Green Creek from his father's estate in 1851.
The household of Robert Liles was enumerated in the 1860 census of Polk County as:

Robert Liles became a colonel in the Confederacy during the Civil War. They lived in a Victorian mansion which has been restored.
After his death, Lydia Anna Blassingame Liles was remarried in Polk County, North Carolina about 1857 to George Robert Feagans, a nephew of Col. Robert Liles, who was born there November 22, 1839. He was a son of Daniel Feagans and Sarah Liles Feagans. The children resented their new father.
They emigrated to Texas. He had enlisted at age 19 April 20, 1861 as a private in Company K, Sixteenth North Carolina Infantry Regiment, according to "North Carolina Troops, 1861-65." He was captured at North Anna River, Virginia May 23, 1864 and was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland until paroled and transferred to Boulware's Wharf, James River, Virginia where he was received March 16, 1865 for exchange.
In 1874 they lived in Grayson County, Texas and in the early 1890s lived in Comanche County, Texas. She died July 5, 1893 and was buried in Dublin, Texas. He died in Comanche County October 7, 1913, according to Joel Chan Edmondson, a great-grandson of Dallas, Texas. They were buried in old Dublin Memorial Park.
Joel Chan Edmondson wrote October 1, 2006:
“We had our Howell reunion in June in Odessa, and lo and behold, Sam Howell's dear, sweet daughter, Sarah Howell Mazur showed a large painting of a handsome couple and asked me who they might be. Using fuzzy genealogy, I went by a long ago description of Lydia Anna Blassingame's lace collar and the striking resem-blance of Josephine Brooks Liles Nichols' son Adolph-us "Dolph" Nichols to the male of the couple, and I pronounced them to be Col. Robert Lyle/Liles and wf2 Lydia Anna Blassingame. [Supposition is that wf1 was Margaret Love, for whom there is a marker behind the manor house.]
The bead work on her dress must have taken many months. It was an elaborate dress. The picture was a water color, and it must have been done at their house, extant, at Sandy Plains, Polk County, North Carolina. Their daughter Robert Anna "Aunt Bob" and/or "Aunt Anner" Liles was born thereabouts and married as his first wife, my Uncle Samuel "Sam" Howell, younger brother of Marilla Howell Edmondson. So there are double cousins this way as another, for Robert Anna Liles was the sister of my grandmother Mary Ella Fea-gans Edmondson. [Col. Liles' older sister, Sarah “Sal-ly” Liles was married to Daniel Feagans. Her son, George Robert Feagans, her 2nd husband, was married to Lydia Anna Blassingame.] Daniel and Sally both died between 1870 and 1875 at Whitewright, Texas in Grayson County. That’s where Mary Ella Feagans was born in 1874. The Feaganses owned lots of real estate in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, but the Lileses were more sophisticated people in Texas. It took over a dozen years to settle the debts owed to Col. Liles in Polk County.
Sam Howell was a road contractor in West Texas, and I believe, built the road from Amarillo to Canyon. He may have been the contractor on the road from Semi-nole to Old Hobbs. Sam Howell died at Tahoka, Texas about 1944. His son Belton Howell drove the Sesqui-centennial lead wagon through Tahoka. By coinci-dence, Belton's grandson, Samuel Wade Howell was assigned to my homeroom in the 7th grade at Bonham Junior High, Odessa, Texas in 1962. His father Wade Howell, born in Tahoka, now is about 85 years old, was an early engineering graduate of Texas Tech Uni-versity, and his first job was as his uncle's assistant in the construction of the present Odessa High School.”

Charles Bartlett "Choc" Edmondson, son of Charles Monte Edmondson and Mary Ella Feagans Edmondson, was born March 3, 1919 in Comanche County. He was married April 22, 1935 at Comanche to Tressie Denny who was born at Bibb, Texas March 29, 1913. She was the daughter of Charles Franklin Denny and Eva Butler Denny. Charles Franklin Denny was the seventh cousin once-removed of Lydia Anna Blassingame through the Earle line, according to Joel Chan Edmondsons. In 1983 Charles Bartlett Edmondson, a retired state employee, lived in Abilene. In 1995 he and his wife lived in Dallas. He died there August 24, 2000. Joel Chan Edmondson wrote his obituary:
“Charles Bartlett Edmondson
Bart Edmondson, CHS Class of ’28, was born on the present Humble Tank Farm at Comyn, Comanche Co., Texas, 3 March 1909. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1990 and died 24 Aug 2000, of congestive heart failure at Baylor Medical Center, Dallas, Texas. He resided in the Turtle Creek area of Dallas for the past ten years. He was the last surviving child of the nine children of Charles Monte Edmondson and Mary Ella Feagans.
“Chocolate” or “Choc”, as he was called from an early age, worked for the Texas
Highway Department in Comanche and for the Abilene State School as a health
provider. He retired in 1979 with 29 years’ State service. His special
interests were watching college and professional football, history and
geography. His boyhood pet dog was named Grover Cleveland, and he never wavered
in his loyalty to the Democratic Party. He’ll probably vote in November
by absentee ballot.
Bart married Tressie Denny, daughter of Charley Denny and Eva Butler, in 1935, in Comanche. To them were born Anita Edmondson Herrera and Joel Chan Edmondson, whose partner is John V. Sobieski, all of whom reside in Dallas. Grandchildren are Edwin McGuire of Wautaga; Glen McGuire of Benbrook, Juliann M. Yoder of Mansfield, and Robin E. Weinrich, of Plano. Eight great grandchildren include Brandon McGuire, U.S. Army, of Comanche. His great niece is Kayla Dawn Hidrogo, of Comanche.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Addison LaQuinta Inn on Sunday, August 27. Bart’s cremated remains will be kept by Tressie at the family home on Buena Vista Street until they are scattered at the Denny family plot at a later date.

He attended Tarleton State College and received his BS degree from Hardin-Simmons University. He received an MA degree from North Texas State University in education. He was commissioned a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He was married May 18, 1963 to Eleanor Rogers who was born November 10, 1940 to Henry Milton Rogers, Jr. and Eleanor Marzelle Wallace Rogers. In 1973 they lived in Odessa and were divorced in 1975. In 1989 Joel Chan Edmondson, a principal and teacher, lived in Dallas. He continued there in retirement in 1995 and 2000. He devoted 31 years to education.
He, an accomplished genealogist and vice-president of Gowen Research Foundation, held membership in Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans and National Genealogical Society. He served as president of the Dallas Genealogical Society and on the board of Texas State Genealogical Society, Lancaster Genealogical Society and Permian Basin Genealogical Society. In 1995 he was employed by the Dallas Public Library in its Research Department and operated his own publishing business, producing "Revolutionary War. Bible, Family & Marriage Records Gleaned from Pension Applications."
He began researching the history of his family in 1965, and it is through his courtesy that the material on the descendants of Lydia Anna Blassingame is included in this manuscript.

Robin Edmondson, daughter of Joel Chan Edmondson and Eleanor Rogers Edmondson, was born February 22, 1967 in Odessa. In 1983 she was a student at Permian High School there. In 1995 she lived in Dallas and in 2000 at Plano, Texas.
Anita Jean Edmondson, daughter of Charles Bartlett Edmondson and Tressie Denny Edmondson, was born November 9, 1939. She was married June 27, 1958 at Comanche to Carlos Dixon McGuire, son of Carlos Burton McGuire and Nona Treva "Jacque" Johnson McGuire. In 1983 she was a hair stylist in Dallas.

Edwin Ray McGuire, son of Carlos Dixon McGuire and Anita Jean Edmondson, was born December 26, 1958 at Comanche. He was married July 22, 1977 in Missouri to Sheri Ann Hilpipre. In 1983 he was a student at Texas State Technical Institute, Waco, Texas.

Victor Glenn McGuire, son of Carlos Dixon McGuire and Anita Jean Edmondson McGuire, was born January 9, 1961 at DeLeon, Texas. In 1983 he lived in Abilene.
Julianne McGuire, daughter of Carlos Dixon McGuire and Anita Jean Edmondson, was born September 23, 1965 in Brownwood. In 1983 she was a senior at Hillcrest High School in Dallas.
Thomas B. Blassingame, son of William Blassingame and Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame, was born about 1837 in Greenville District, South Carolina. He later lived at Sandy Plains, North Carolina in Polk County.
John Gowen Easley Blassingame, son of William Blassingame and Mary Berry Earle Prince Blassingame, was born about 1839 at the home of his grandmother Mary Gowen Blassingame in Greenville District. He later made his home in Atlanta, according to a letter written by his brother James W. Blassingame.
G. John G. Blassingame, son of James P. Blassingame and Mary Gowen Blassingame, was born about 1802 in Greenville County. It is believed that he was a namesake of his grandfather John "Buck" Gowen. If such was the case then it is speculated that his name was "G. John Gowen Blassingame." Pursuing this reasoning, it might be assumed that the name of the grandfather might have been "G. John Gowen."
It is apparent that G. John G. Blassingame was a favorite of his grandfather. He had received from him a "gift of a negro boy called Harold given him by his grandfather, John Gowen, when a child," according to the will of James P. Blassingame. G. John G. Blassingame was mentioned in the will of his father as the recipient of one of four equal shares of land which he owned at the time of his death.
G. John G. Blassingame died in 1834 and was probably buried in Greenville County. It is unknown whether he was married or had children.
Winn Blassingame, son of James P. Blassingame and Mary Gowen Blassingame, was born February 18, 1808 in Greenville District. Under the terms of his father's will dated in 1820 Winn Blassingame received an equal one-fourth of the testator's land and one "negro boy."
About 1830 he was married, wife's name Edmonia. He and his wife removed to Perry County, Alabama along with other relatives before 1841. Winn Blassingame died November 16, 1852 at his home on Centerville road near Marion, Alabama. He died childless and was buried in Marion Cemetery adjoining the grave of his sister, Permelia Blassingame Miller.
William Hornbuckle, brother-in-law to Winn Blassingame, was appointed his administrator and was ordered by the court to sell the land of the deceased to pay all legacies and funeral expenses, according to Perry County Record Book F, page 238-245:
"William Hornbuckle appears and states that Winn Blassingame's personal property is not sufficient to pay his debts. His heirs-at-law are his wife, Edmonia Blassingame; Emily McCrary, wife of Mr. McCrary; Mary and Martha, daughters of Mrs. Eliza Adams, formerly Eliza Blassingame, and sister of the deceased, residing in Georgia; also, three other heirs, to wit: Mrs. Missouri McCauley, wife of Johnson McCauley; Eliza Wyatt, wife of W. N. Wyatt, and Miss Caroline Miller, all of this county, and daughters of Mrs. Permilia Miller who was a sister of the deceased; Elizabeth Clayton of Atlanta, Georgia; Sarah Whitted, wife of Mr. Whitted of North Carolina; James Blassingame and William Blassingame, in the state of Georgia; Miss Lydia Ann Blassingame, and two other brothers, names not known, residing in Greenville District, South Carolina; children of William Blassingame, brother of deceased and Mary Hornbuckle."
[From this record alone is deciphered many of the relationships of the Perry County Blassingames.]
Descendants declare that Lydia Ann Blassingame was Ľ Indian, stating that her grandfather was an Indian.
James Blassingame, son of James P. Blassingame and Mary Gowen Blassingame, was born January 25, 1810 in Greenville District. When he was 10 years old he was named in the will of his father dated February 3, 1820 as the recipient of a fourth of his father's land. Apparently when his father died in the following year James Blassingame received his inheritance in trust. He was also to receive "a negro boy" when he came of age in accordance with his father's will.
Conflicting reports on James Blassingame have surfaced. One report states that James Blassingame died in 1836, probably as a single man in South Carolina. Another report, the statement of William Hornbuckle, his brother-in-law, dated November 18, 1852, indicated that James Blassingame was living in Georgia at that time.
Mary Benson "Polly" Blassingame, daughter of James P. Blassingame and Mary Gowen Blassingame, was born in Greenville District January 25, 1812. About 1832 she was married to William Hornbuckle, son of John Hornbuckle and Lydia Gunn Hornbuckle, who was also born July 9, 1805 in Greenville District. Shortly after their marriage the couple migrated to Perry County, Alabama to join other relatives who had preceded them there.
William Hornbuckle was appointed as one of the appraisers of the estate of John William Blassingame in September 1836, according to Perry County Record Book B, pages 274-292.
The household of a William L. Hornbuckle was enumerated in the 1820 census of Dallas County, Alabama as:

On February 27, 1839 William Hornbuckle witnessed a deed from John L. Chambers to William N. Wyatt, according to Perry County Deed Book D, page 558. William Hornbuckle was a member of the Board of Trustees at Judson College in 1845-1849.
William Hornbuckle was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1850 census of Perry, Marion Beat. He was a deacon in the Baptist Church at Marion, Alabama. He reappeared in the 1860 census of Perry County. He died there in April 14, 1864
Mary Benson Blassingame Hornbuckle, a member of the Baptist Church, died in Marion, Alabama July 10, 1855. A monument in Marion Cemetery reads, "Mary Benson Hornbuckle, born in Greenville District, South Carolina, January 25, 1812, wife of William Hornbuckle, died in Marion, Alabama July 10, 1855."

John Blassingame Hornbuckle, son of William Hornbuckle and Mary Benson Blassingame Hornbuckle, was born about 1839 in Marion. He died unmarried.
Frank Benson Hornbuckle, son of William Hornbuckle and Mary Benson Blassingame Hornbuckle, was born about 1840 at Marion. He died unmarried.
Elizabeth Wyatt Hornbuckle, daughter of William Hornbuckle and Mary Benson Blassingame Hornbuckle, was born February 29, 1852 at Marion. She was married January 17, 1878 to Richard Gaines Roberts, Jr. of Oxford, Alabama.

William Gaines Mellon, son of William Foster Mellon and Lila Lane Roberts Mellon, was born February 21, 1912. He was married about 1923 to Margaret Edwards Lowry.
Sarah Wyatt Mellon, daughter of William Foster Mellon and Lila Lane Roberts Mellon, was born May 24, 1916. Of this individual nothing more is known.
James Foster Mellon, son of William Foster Mellon and Lila Lane Roberts Mellon, was born July 25, 1919. He was married in 1942 to Elizabeth Lane "Betty" Baugh, daughter of John Alexander Baugh and Carilu Leman Baugh.
James Foster Mellon had a military career and served over 33 years with the U.S. Army and South Carolina National Guard. In 1976 and in 1983 he lived in Sumter, South Carolina where he continued the efforts of his grandmother and mother in family research. In that year he wrote to Frank Maxwell Gowen the following letter:

While in Greenville, SC recently my wife and I had a very pleasant talk with Miss Mary Alice Seyle. Upon learning of our interest in obtaining information on the Gowen line, she provided us with your name and address.
My maternal grandmother, Eliza Hornbuckle Roberts, did some work in the genealogical field, and my mother, Lila Roberts Mellon, continued to work as long as she could along the same lines. My mother is now 88 years of age and is unable to do more because of glaucoma and cataracts. Both of these ladies lived in Oxford, Alabama so researching records in South Carolina and Virginia was difficult especially during those years they worked at it. My mother has given me some papers, records, correspondence, etc., pertaining to our lines which are: Gowen, Blassingame, Hornbuckle, Winn and Earle.
I retired in 1974 after 33 1/2 years service in the Army and SC National Guard. Since then I have visited several places in the state and talked with people attempting to get additional information on the lines mentioned. It would be interested to correspond with you and swap information.
