 Alexander P(ollard?) Hussey      born April 14, 1825
George S. Hussey         born in 1828
 Sarah E. Hussey          born March 14, 1831

Alexander P. Hussey, son of Joseph Starbuck Hussey and Lydia E. Pollard Hussey, was born April 14, 1825 on Nantucket Island, according to his Hawaiian descendants.  It is erroneously reported in Nantucket records that Alexander P. Hussey "died single."

In 1977 Mrs. Lloyd J. Martin, a Hussey researcher of California, determined that Alexander P. Hussey, ship's carpenter, went to sea in his youth and was "marooned" in Hawaii.  On a trip to Hawaii in October 1979 by Arlee Claud Gowen it was confirmed that he sailed to Hawaii on a whaling ship in 1843. Records there confirm that he was married to Makanoe Kaaikaula Kalei Kauwilaha, a native of Hawaii whose ancestors were Tahitian.  Fourteen children were born to them, and in 1979 over 400 descendants had been recorded.

Theodore D. "Ted" Hussey, clan recorder for the Hussey family in Hawaii, and Beatrice Mileka Hussey Kailiponi, a Mormon Hussey researcher on the island of Maui, displayed photographs and supplied details of the lives of their great-grandparents.

A letter written to them in 1954 by George Hussey of New York, a descendant of Sylvanus Hussey, Jr. described research he did on the identify of Alexander P. Hussey.  The letter reads:

"Dear Friends,

On leaving Honolulu I promised that no stone would be left unturned in my endeavor to help you establish where Alexander Hussey came from and how he got to your islands.

It took far longer than I expected, as the reading of hundreds of shipping lists and crews and ship logs from 1840 to 1860 as well as correspondence with many historical museums, was time-consuming.

The results have been rewarding, and I am so happy for you.  His records and dates are definite and well recorded.  When signing the papers for his voyage he gave and swore to the following:

1. From Charleston, South Carolina [Charlestown, Massachusetts?].

2. Age: 22; Height: 5'6.5"; Complexion: Dark; Eyes: Blue. [Actually his age was 18--his parents were married only 19 years earlier--but he may have felt that he would not be given a berth as a ship's carpenter if he recorded his true age.]

3. This voyage was on the ship 'Columbus' of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, which is across the harbor from New Bedford, Massachusetts, my birthplace.  This ship was under the command of Capt. Fish (no first name given) and sailed from the above port November 13, 1843 for the Northwest Pacific ocean for whaling.  The first mate was Harvey Cole who died at sea in 1844.

4. The agents of the ship were Gibbs and Jenney of New Bedford, Massachusetts.  After a very successful voyage of 23 months the 'Columbus' arrived in Hawaii October 12, 1845 with 800 barrels of sperm oil, 2,400 barrels of whale oil and 14,000 pounds of whale bone.  It remained there until November 24, 1845 when it sailed for home, arriving in Fairhaven April 13, 1846.  This is no comment on returning members of the crew, and the records show only this one trip from Fairhaven for Alexander Hussey.

5. The information above was obtainable and recorded as follows: No. 1 and No. 2 and part of No. 3 and No. 5 from Starbuck's "History of the Whale Fisheries in the Year of 1843" and crew lists of the same year for the 'Columbus' in the Old Dartmouth Historical Association of New Bedford.  No. 4 was found in your early missionary paper, 'The Friend,' under the date of October 12, 1845, page 158, which you can see in the Mission Historical Society in Honolulu.

It has given me great pleasure to have helped you in my small way.

                                        Sincerely,
                                        George Hussey
                                        70 East 45th Street, Room 5733
                                        New York City, New York"

Theodore D. "Ted" Hussey advised in an interview in October 1979 that his great-grandfather came to the island of Hawaii as a carpenter for a mission church, probably Quaker.  He was married March 2, 1851 while a resident of Hamakua, Hawaii, wife's name Emilia, according to Hawaii Marriage Book H-19a, page 21.  The bride's name was Manaia, according to one source.

His bride proved unfaithful, and he gave her a bill of divorcement, according to Theodore D. "Ted" Hussey who retains the two-page document handwritten in the Hawaiian language.  Apparently no children were born to Alexander P. Hussey and Emilia Hussey.

Alexander P. Hussey was remarried September 17, 1862 to Makanoe Kaaikaula Kalei Kauwilaha, according to Hawaii Marriage Book 28, page 19.  The marriage was also recorded in Hawaii Marriage Book 78, page 119.  The groom was then shown as a resident of North Kohala, Hawaii.

The bride was of Hawaiian royalty, a daughter of Nihowehilani and Naweluokekikipaa, according to Beatrice Mileka Hussey Kailiponi.  She was born in Kohala about 1838.  At age five she was betrothed to the son of a Hawaiian king, but her father objected to the contracted marriage and sent her to the jungle in hiding under the care of an older brother.  The brother built a temple for her in the jungle and surrounded it with a stone wall 15 feet high with only a narrow passageway for an entry.  He stationed himself above the entryway and killed at least one of the king's soldiers who were searching for Makanoe by lassoing him and hanging him with the noose.  Later Makanoe was placed in a school operated by the church mission for her protection.  She remained in the school until Alexander P. Hussey made his proposal of marriage.

Alexander P. Hussey became a master carpenter in North Kohala District and died there April 9, 1896.  He was buried at Nuilii, Hawaii on the northwestern extremity of the island.  His wife died there also March 29, 1916.
