The scouts returned with exciting news about the homesteading possibilities on McDonald Flat, and influenced 26 family members to make the move to New Mexico. Thomas Calvin Drennan, at the age of 17, got his first job there, cowboying for Tom Watts in August 1916. The cowboys' job was to "range far and wide," according to Mary Alnora "Nora" Cox Drennan. "Once Calvin, Tom Prude and another fellow went to Mesquite Springs near Guadalupe Mountains, crossed the Black River, picked up about 25 cows, stayed all night at Mesquite Springs, rode by the mouth of Carlsbad Caverns and met Jim White, the discoverer of the Caverns. This was long before the Caverns became a national park."
"When it became to cold to work cattle in the mountains Calvin worked for various neighbors--Calvin Buckner and his mother, Mrs. Prude, Clay Prude, and Bernard Cleve. He and Ernest Hale, a cousin, built about 100 miles of fence for Henry Jernigan on his ranch on Quevo River, south of McDonald Flat."
In 1918 Thomas Calvin Drennan returned to Texas assisting James Alvia Cox, his future brother-in-law, in handling a string of horses which he proposed to sell. Returning to New Mexico alone he passed through Hobbs, New Mexico which at that time consisted of one store which also housed the post office.
He was married August 20, 1919 to Mary Alnora "Nora" Cox at Cloudcroft, New Mexico. She, the daughter of James Madison Cox and Amanda Lucinda "Cindy" McCall Cox, was born December 24, 1900 at Florence, Texas. They were third cousins, once-removed, but were not aware of the relationship until Mary Alnora "Nora" Cox Drennan began to research the family history about 1958.
In October Thomas Calvin Drennan and his brother-in-law James Alvia Cox made plans to return to Texas, having become disillusioned with homesteading in New Mexico. They made their way to Roswell, New Mexico where they proposed to buy train tickets to Texas. There they chanced to meet an automobile dealer who had two new 1919 Model T Fords to deliver to Sweetwater, Texas, and they offered to drive one. They moved their families to Stonewall County, Texas where they operated farms in the midst of other Drennan individuals who had made the New Mexico attempt with them.
In the fall of 1925 they moved to Dawson County, Texas where he continued farming. In 1926 he broke out land in the Klondyke community for a farm, but moved the following year to a farm in the Wilson community. Mary Alnora "Nora" Cox Drennan wrote, "It was here that I contracted typhoid fever and was in bed eight weeks, unconscious most of the time and with such a high fever the doctor didn't think I could live. Due to good neighbors, my sister Ora, and Mother plus my strong constitution I managed to pull through. The relatives took turns taking the children into their homes and caring for them and kept them from being exposed to the disease."
In 1928 they moved to "the Matthews place" just north of Klondyke where their home was destroyed by fire. In the following year they rented a quarter-section in the Munger community from Higginbotham-Bartlett who built them a new four-room house and remained their five years. In 1935 they moved to the Woody community to operate the farm of his father who was then operating the Woody Store. In 1936 they rented a farm in the Woody community from Audrey Cox. In 1940 they bought 10 acres west of Lamesa.
In 1955 they moved to Lubbock, Texas where he was employed by JOT, Inc, owned by his nephew Stanley Olgee "Jot" Gowen.
Later they lived in Denton, Texas where his son-in-law Charles Edwin "Doc" Davis operated a Chevrolet dealership. Following this period they lived in Ft. Worth, Texas and Winnsboro, Texas where they operated a stock farm with their son Thelbert Roy "Jack" Drennan. In 1977 they retired and returned to Aspermont, Texas purchasing a home from Ella Rash Parker who was later to become their daughter-in-law.
