Cornelius Jackson "Jack" Cox, son of Cornelius "Neely" Cox and Catherine Jackson Cox, was born July 22, 1844 in Indiana, according to "Cornelius Cox and Catherine Jackson, Their Descendants."  The death certificate of Thomas Fulton Cox, a son, reported that Cornelius Jackson "Jack" Cox was born in Illinois.  However it is believed that he was born in Missouri. [Roy Dean Cox, a grandson, who wrote "Cox Family History" in 1960 gave the name of his grandfather as "Clarence Jackson 'Jack' Cox."]

Cornelius Jackson "Jack" Cox's parents brought him to Dallas County, Texas about 1844.  He is reported as the eleventh child and the eighth son, suggesting that an unknown daughter of Cornelius "Neely" Cox died young.  He served in the Sixth Texas Cavalry Regiment in Louisiana and probably fought in the Battle of Mansfield.  "C. J. Cox" sold 34.5 acres in the Cornelius Cox Survey to Benjamin F. Elam February 9, 1866, according to Dallas County Deed Book J, page 131.

Cornelius Jackson "Jack" Cox was married June 21, 1866 to Huldah Ann Kemp in her father's farmhouse in Dallas County.  The farm was on land that now adjoins Buckner Orphans Home in Dallas, Texas.  Huldah Ann Kemp was born May 14, 1847 in Scott County, Illinois and was brought to Dallas County in 1853.  She regaled descendants with stories of the three trips she made to Illinois in a covered wagon.

"C. J. Cox" gave a release to Richard Bruton, his brother-in-law, June 21, 1870 on 260 acres in the Cornelius Cox Survey, according to Dallas County Deed Book K, page. 234.  About that time he removed to Hamilton County, Texas where he remained until 1881.

Cornelius Jackson "Jack" Cox was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 census of Hamilton County, Enumeration District 70, page 15:

"Cox, Cornelius J.   35, born in Missouri

Margaret Cox Kemp (K4/1.1) died January 22, 1931 at Pecan Wells, Texas.  William Murphy Kemp (K4/1.2) died there October 5, 1925.  Eleven children were born to them.

William Cox (C5/6.2), believed to be a son of Christopher Cox and Hannah Johnson Cox, was born January 2, 1803, probably in Knox County, Kentucky. His family removed to Ross County, Ohio shortly afterwards and apparently remained in that area until after 1820.  His father appeared as the head of a household in the 1830 census of Monroe County, Indiana.

William Cox (C5/6.2) was married there November 23, 1830 to Elizabeth Jackson (J5/1.2), according to Monroe County Marriage Book A, pages 78-79 by David Barrow, J.P. on a license that had been issued November 17, 1830.

Jehu Cox, Mormon son of Thomas Isaac Cox [brother of Christopher Cox, wrote in his journal sometime after 1877, "Here are some of my cousins, I want work done for them: James Johnson, Alfred Johnson, Sadie Johnson (her work is done), Carnils Cox [Cornelius "Neely" Cox and Katy Jackson [Catherine Jackson Cox, William Cox and his wife, Lottie Jackson, John King and Delilah Cox, his wife.  There were all born in the United States, some older than I am [born September 5, 1803, Knox County, Kentucky] and some four years younger. The youngest is now 84."  [It is possible that the full name of Elizabeth Jackson was Charlotte Elizabeth "Lottie" Jackson or that Jehu Cox may have confused "Lottie" with "Lizzie"].

William Cox (C5/6.2) died November 19, 1873 and was buried in Little Union Baptist Cemetery, "age 70 years, 10 months, 17 days."  Children born to William Cox (C5/6.2) and Elizabeth Jackson Cox (J5/1.2) are unknown.

Delilah Cox, believed to be a daughter of Christopher Cox and Hannah Johnson Cox, was born in 1804 in Ohio, probably Ross County.  She was a cousin to Nathan Cox, according to the research of Mary Wilson.  Her father removed to Monroe County, Indiana shortly after 1820.  She was married there in 1822 to John W. King who was born about 1799 at King's Mountain, North Carolina.

King's Mountain, probably named for his family, was applied to a mountainous ridge in Gaston County, North Carolina which was a part of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  A small town, also called King's Mountain, was located about four miles from the crest.  The Revolutionary Battle of King's Mountain, in which the Americans were victorious, was fought there October 7, 1780 between 1,100 loyalist militiamen under Major Patrick Ferguson and 900 backswoodsmen from North Carolina and Tennessee.

Clyde Shahan, a descendant of John W. King, suggests that he was a grandson of Johnston King.  He wrote:

"It is likely that Johnston King was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina about 1740.  He had a wife and four sons over 16 when the family was enumerated in 1790. One of his sons, Johnston King, Jr. was born in Rutherford County about 1765.  His son John W. King was born in the vicinity of King's Mountain, North Carolina in 1798 and died in Denton County, Texas in the summer of 1846.

When he became so violently ill that he knew he could not recover he asked to be buried at the foot of a certain big oak near his house.  Thus began King Cemetery where his body remained for 109 years until 1955 when the Garza-Little Elm Lake necessitated the removal of the King cemetery to higher ground.  The U.S. government bought land adjoining Little Elm Cemetery and moved the graves from the land which was to be inundated.

Nathan Cox, a cousin of Delilah Cox, was married in 1822 to Dorcas King, possibly a sister to John W. King.  She was born in Kentucky in 1801, suggesting that the King family movements had paralleled the movements of the Cox family from Kentucky to Ross County, Ohio and Monroe County, Indiana.  Rhoda Cox, suggested as a sister to Delilah Cox, was also married to a King.  She appeared in the 1850 census of Denton County, Texas as a widow with seven children and the head of Household 68-68.

In 1824 they lived in Indiana, in 1827 in Tennessee, in 1838 Benton County, Missouri and in 1844 in Bates County, Missouri.  At that time they joined the Peters Colony, an organization promoted by a group of 20 investors headed by W. S. Peters, a music publisher of Louisville.  The syndicate had negotiated with the Republic of Texas and had promised to deliver 600 families to settle the North Texas wilderness area.

The family of John W. King made the first settlement at Little Elm, Texas in Fannin County in July of that year.  Upon arrival John W. King and his sons received certificates for 1,600 acres of land, but it was 16 years later before clear title was received to the entire acreage.  Denton County was formed from Fannin County in 1846 and they found themselves in the new county.  John W. King died in the summer of 1846.

Thus Delilah Cox King became a widow in a wilderness beset with hardship and danger.  Once marauding Indians invaded her home.  She grabbed an axe from behind the door and sunk it into the skull of an Indian as he stooped to snatch her baby from its bed, according to "One Hundred Twelve Years in Little Elm Community."  Madge Williams Robb, family historian of Dimmitt, Texas, confirms the story and reports that it was her husband's grandmother who was saved by the axe.

On another occasion she prevented the theft of her horse which was chained to a tree near where she was making soap in her backyard.  Her weapon--a long-handled gourd, boiling soap and courage to stand her ground.

In 1858, 12 years following the death of her husband, Delilah Cox King received a patent for his original 640 acres of land in Denton County.  Ella Hawkins, a granddaughter-in-law, recalled her as a kind, patient old lady teaching her how to knit socks.

She appeared as the head of Household 270-271 in the 1860 census of Denton County, page 40.  The family appeared as:

"King, Delilah  54, born in Ohio
    William  17, born in Missouri
Delilah E. 15, born in Missouri"

She reappeared living in the household of her daughter, Mary Ann "Polly" King Balch in the 1880 census of Denton County, Enumeration District 108, page 18 as "King, Delilah, 74, born in Ohio, cannot write."

She died in 1884 after spending 40 of her 78 years at Little Elm.

He was married about 1855 to a widow, Louisa Smith.  Thirteen years after filing for land in the colony he received his patent April 27, 1857 to 320 acres.

He was remarried August 29, 1865 to Martha Jones (J4/1.1), daughter of Matthew Jones (J5/1.1) and Emily Jane Jones who had arrived about 1846 in Texas from Illinois.  She died in 1868, and he was remarried to Lizzie Bybee (B4/1.1).  Following his death in 1880 Lizzie Bybee King (B4/1.1) was remarried "to a Mr. Green and went West," according to "One Hundred Twelve Years in Little Elm Community."

King (K5/1.1) and Delilah Cox King (C5/6.3) and a namesake of her maternal grandmother, was born January 26, 1825, probably in Indiana.  Her parents lived in Bates County in 1844, and she was married there about that time to Chancey Smith (S4/1.1) who was born in Ohio June 24, 1820.  He was a son of Joshua Smith (S5/1.1) and Eleanor Smith who had moved to Missouri from New York via Ohio.

They remained in Bates County when her family removed to Texas.  Chancey Smith (S4/1.1) died September 14, 1883, and she died November 30, 1884.
