"Silas Hussey, fifth child of Silas Hussey and Lucy Varney Hussey, was born in Ro+chester, New Hampshire, January 24, 1828.  He grew up on his father's farm and was educated in the common schools.  When a youg man he went to Rockport, Massachusetts and learned the art of cutting granite.  In 1849 he heard of Marshall's discovery of gold in Sutton's millrace in California, and at once deci+ded to go to the newly discovered Eldorado.  So he made his way by the Cape Horn route to the land of gold, starting November 1849, and reaching San Francisco May 1850 after spending 187 days on the route.  He at once went to the mines at Middle Fork of the American River and there until 1853 was working at placer mining.  He returned to New Hampshire in 1854 and was married there April 18, 1854 to Rosanna A. Hussey, who was born in Rochester, daughter of Jonathan Hussey and Mary Hayes Hussey."

"In 1863 Silas Hussey returned to California via the Isthmus route, and was 15 months engaged in contracting on the Central Pacific railroad.  In these four years he made more money than he could have made in New Hampshire, but saved only enough to amount to fair wages.  Soon after his return to Rochester he engaged in mercantile business for a short time, and then returned to the granite business and contracting which he has followed most of his life.  Previous to 1895 he built a twin arch bridge across the Cocheco, in the main street of Rochester, and in 1883 erected the monument to the soldiers of the Civil War in the park of that place.  For the first of these contracts he received $13,800 and for the other $2,500.  In 1869 he represented Rochester in the legislature, being elected on the Republican ticket.  He also served as police judge and deputy sheriff.  For some years he was chairman of the town and county Democratic committee and member of the state Democratic committee.  For 46 years he was justice of the peace and for 10 years state justice.  In 1908 he continued to live in Rochester."
