Christopher [Columbus?] Whitmire (W8/1.4) was born in Stuttgart, Wurtemberg-Baden of parents unknown. about 1752.  He and his brother Henry Whitmire (W8/1.3) arrived in Philadelphia about 1766, seeking their brother Michael Whitmire (W8/1.1) who had preceded them.  Apparently Michael Whitmire (W8/1.1) fled Stuttgart thinking he had killed his hated step-father with a shovel blow to his head, and his mother had dispatched his brothers to go to America in search of him to advise him that his step-father had recovered and that he was not a murderer.

"Christopher Whitmire, who was 14 years old, came with his brother Henry to America from Stuttgart, Germany and landed in Philadelphia where Henry married.  They came to Pickens County, South Carolina [then Pendleton District] in 1784 and stayed for six years," stated Frank Whitmire in a telephone interview November 26, 1982 shortly before his death.

It is believed that the brothers spent some time in Maryland perhaps with other members of the Whitmire family before moving to South Carolina.  It is possible that Christopher Whitmire (W8/1.4) was married there.  Apparently they removed to South Carolina in 1784 where they hoped to locate their brother.

A Christopher Whitmire did not appear in the 1790 census index of South Carolina.  A Christopher Whitmire appeared as the head of a household in the 1800 census of Pendleton District, page 137.

A Christopher Whitmire was a landowner on Cane Creek in Pendleton District when Stephen Whitmire (W8/1.1) bought land there.  A Christopher Whitmire witnessed a deed there in 1802.  In 1808 a Christopher Whitmire bought land from Stephen Whitmire (W8/1.1) on Cane Creek.

It is believed that Christopher Whitmire (W8/1.4) moved to Newberry County, then District 96, to be near his brother George Frederick Whitmire (W8/1.3) who had also settled in South Carolina.  A Christopher Whitmire appeared in the 1810 census of Newberry District, page 122.

Christopher Whitmire (W8/1.4) died June 13, 1817, "age 65," according to his tombstone in Lower Duncan's Creek Cemetery recorded in "Newberry County Cemeteries." His death occurred on the same day as that of his sister-in-law Sarah Phoebe Haygood Whitmire (H8/1.1) who also died at age 65.

It is believed that children born to him include:

Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr.  (W7/4.1)  born in November 1774

Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr. (W7/4.1), son of Christopher Whitmire (W8/1.4), was born in November 1774.  He was born in South Carolina, according to the death certificate of his son Henry DeCalvie Whitmire (W6/1.21).  Christopher Columbus Whitmire (W7/4.1) was married thrice, sired 21 children and additionally raised a step-son, according to the research of Katherine Marie "Kathy" Sanford Petrucelli (S2/1.4), a descendant of Forest City, North Carolina.

He was married about 1793 to Elizabeth "Betty" Mauldin (M7/1.1) from Greenville County, South Carolina.  Elizabeth "Betty" Mauldin Whitmire (M8/1.1) died in 1794 during the birth of twins, according to the Petrucelli research.  Later he was remarried to a Mrs. Lyons, a sister of Elizabeth "Betty" Mauldin Whitmire (M8/1.1), first name unknown, according to Vivian Conn, Whitmire researcher of Ft. Worth, Texas.  She was a widow with a son, Jimmy Lyons.  [Judge Charles Augustus Lord (L4/1.4) wrote in 1941 that the Whitmires in the vicinity of Beaumont, Texas had received a visit from a cousin "by the name of Lyons."]

His third marriage was about 1818 to Sallie Elizabeth Galloway (G7/1.1) who was born in April 1797, according to her tombstone.

A Christopher Whitmire was a witness to a deed which conveyed 100 acres on the Keowee River to Jacob Reece October 13, 1817.  In 1818 he and Lemuel Reece witnessed a deed from Peter Reece to Jacob Reece in Pendleton District.

A Christopher Whitmire was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1820 census of Pendleton District, page 222:

        "Whitmire, Christopher  white male      16-26

                                white female    16-26

                                white male       0-10

                                white male       0-10"

A second enumeration for a Christopher Whitmire appeared in the 1820 census of Pendleton District, page 223, according to Katherine Marie "Kathy" Sanford Petrucelli (S2/1.4):

        "Whitmire, Christopher  white male      16-26

                                white female    26-45

                                white female    over 45

                                white male      16-26"

In 1825 "Christopher Whitmire, Sr." sold 315 acres on Cane Creek to "Christopher Whitmire, Jr," according to Pendleton District deed records.  About 1826 he relocated in southwestern North Carolina near Rosman, in present-day Transylvania County on the South Carolina state line.  His location originally lay in Buncombe County, then in Henderson County, then in Transylvania County upon its formation.

Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr. (W7/4.1) on August 25, 1827 purchased 500 acres of land "lying in the County of Buncombe on both sides of the French Broad River including the three forks of the said river where the path crosses Eastatoe." from Charles McDowell of Burke County for $1,000, according to Buncombe County Deed Book 21, page 108.   He called his land "Crab Orchard," according to Katherine Marie "Kathy" Sanford Petrucelli (S2/1.4).  She wrote:

"The Eastatoe Path was the main trail for the Eastatoe Indians on their annual hunting trips.  They followed the same route crossing the mountains and waterways at Davidson River, then through Brevard and on through the Cherryfields to the French Broad River near a point now known as Rosman, and from there down into South Carolina.  Almost 150 years later Ronny Morgan, great-great-grandson of Christopher, found an Indian peace pipe on Frank Morgan's farm which was once a part of "Crab Orchard."

Christopher Columbus Whitmire (W7/4.1) appeared as the head of a household in the 1830 census of Buncombe County:

        "Whitmire, Christopher          white male      50-60

                                        white male      15-20

                                        white female    15-20

                                        white female    10-15

                                        white female    10-15

                                        white male       5-10

                                        white male       0-5

                                        white female     0-5"

Christopher Columbus Whitmire (W7/4.1) wrote his will March 29, 1837.  In it he mentioned nine of his (then) 19 children:

"In the name of God amen.  I Christopher Whitmire of the County of Buncombe and State of North Carolina being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God, calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hand of almighty God and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Almighty power of God and touching such worldly estate where with it has pleased God to bless me with in this life.  I give demise and dispose of it in the following manner and form, first I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my beloved wife my dwelling house and all the furniture belonging to the same also all the horses cattle sheep and hogs and all other stock belonging to me and a negro woman named Milly during her life and then to be divided between the three youngest sons William John and George Washington and my plantation and farming tools during her life and to be divided equally between my three sons named above at her death, I give and bequeath to my [son] Richard a piece [of land] lying on both sides of the middle Fork of French Broad River which I have give him a title for the same for his part of my estate and also one dollar I give and bequeath to my son Andrew one dollar, I give and bequeath to my [son] Christopher a piece of land joining my son Andrew lying on both sides of French Broad River by him freeley to be possessed and enjoyed, I give and bequeath to my daughter Rebecca one dollar, I give unto my daughter Jane one dollar, I give unto my daughter Christina one dollar, and do hereby utterly disallow all other wills and testaments.  Given under my hand and seal this 29th day of March 1837.

Test: William Paxton, Sally M. Paxton           Christopher Whitmire"

In the following year he was prompted to rewrite his will which was recorded in Henderson County Will Book 1, page 13.  In the second will he named the 14 "children of my first wife," suggesting that he had only two wives instead of the three wives normally ascribed to him:

"In the name of God amen.  I Christopher Whitmire being of a sound and disposing mind and memory (thanks be to God) and calling to mind the mortality of the body and that it may return to dust from whence it came, and the spirit to God who gave it.

I therefore make this my last will and testament hereby revoking and disallowing all wills heretofore by me made in any form or manner what-ever and in the first place I recommend my soul to God . . . through my blessed Redeemer and my body to be decently buried with a Christian burial in hope of a glorious resurrection at his second coming.

I wish all my just debts to be paid and also for my executor to collect all that is due me and to be applied as I may hereafter direct.

Signed sealed and acknowledged                  Christopher Whitmire In the presence of  Benjamin Willson     Henry Lyons"

Henry Lyons is believed to be a relative to the second wife of Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr. (W7/4.1).

In 1839 he applied to the Henderson County Court to amend his tax rendition for 1838 to include his "black poll."  He died at Rosman in November 1842, according to his tombstone inscription.  He was buried in Whitmire family cemetery located in the East Fork community near Rosman.  Sallie Elizabeth Galloway Whitmire (G7/1.1), died April 24, 1885 of cancer and was buried beside him.

The 1830 census of Buncombe County, North Carolina and the 1840 census of Henderson County, North Carolina indicates that Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr. (W7/4.1) was born between 1780 and 1790.  His enumeration in 1840 was recorded as:

        "Whitmire, Christopher          white male      50-60

                                        white female    30-40

                                        white male      15-20

                                        white male      10-15

                                        white female    10-15

                                        white male       0-5

                                        white female     0-5"

On February 21, 1843 "Benjamin King and Elizabeth Whitmire came into Court and presented a paper writing purporting to be the last Will and Testatment of Christopher Whitmire which was admitted to probate by the Oath of Henry Lyon a subscribing witness thereto, whereupon the Court ordered Letters Testamentary to be granted which was done and the said executors qualified."
