Political - Running for Office
Pottersville, Mo. March 22, 1898
==================================== Wm. P. Epps, Democratic candidate for
Judge of the Northern district, in his campaign is
casting slurs at the present Republican Judges who are
out for re-election and saying that the people should
vote for honest, clean, moral men. Now we want to
ask Mr. Epps one question - - Why did you quit your
school in Dry Creek Township in 1892, between Saturday
night and Monday morning, and run to Arkansas and from
there notify the directors that you would not teach out
the rest of the term, giving them your reasons
therefor? For fear that it may be embarassing for
you to answer, we will answer it for you. "It
was because you had been intimate with a school girl, and
was afraid there would be a 'Gun play in the near
future.'" This is no CAMPAIGN FALSHOOD but the
TRUTH, and can be confirmed by many Dry Creek
people. Fathers with young daughters think of
this! Brothers with young sisters think of
this! Young men with sweethearts think of
this! and then, by your votes, say which is the
CLEANER MAN. (Note - in Volume 3 of Howell County, Missouri Post Offices, Postmasters and Their Communities, by Gerald and Charlotte Groves of Willow Springs, Mo., from court records, he cites a suit was brought by W. P. Epps against Probate Judge H. P. Dawes, Highway Engineer Ben M. Alsup and County Judge George H. McClaim, for slander, claiming they circulated untruthful and damaging stories that injured his standing as a citizen and teacher. )
