CREAGER LANE
David's Cemetery

Information & photos courtesy of: Ken Striker of Dayton, OH

The above photo is a sign that reads "CREAGER LANE." It is next to the ONE WAY sign. "There is a line of old stones which apparently were the ones taken from the Creager Farm Cemetery about 1950, and the line is the western most part of the section. The stones in that line are for the most part unreadable. The Creager Lane runs perpendicular to that row of stones and forms the southern most part of that section." WING radio station tower now (2006) stands where the Creager Farm Cemetery/Graveyard once was located. Ken Striker, May 2006

STORM DAMAGES GRAVESTONES in DAVID'S CEMETERY
Week of July 7, 2003
Information & photo courtesy of: Ken Striker of Dayton, OH
Large gravestone in background is that of C. W. Creager.
Click on his name to access his biography.
[Note: Internet, 14 July 2003, E-mail to ASH: Ken Striker of Dayton, OH indicates: "The C. W. Creager [Christian William Creager] monument is the tall one at center back. It has some damaged parts laying near the base from a damaging storm that hit Montgomery Co., OH during the week of July 7, 2003. The broken stone in front resulted from a tree falling at the site. It is not a Creager stone."

MARY A. CREAGER
[perhaps Anna Mary / Mary Anna (nee Wolf) Creager
Wife of Christian Creager

CONFLICT:
It is too bad that we can't read Mary's gravestone, as there seems to be a conflict of information.

1. Burial record from Ann Wallis states: "Mary A. Volte, w/o of Christian Creager, d 15 Feb 1842, 64y 5m, 'NS' [no stone].' If there is no stone as it says in the record, then this could not be Mary A. Volte's gravestone. Also, there appears to be a conflict in the husband's name given for Mary A. Volte.
2. Christian Creager's wife is given in family records as Anna Mary Wolf. No other wife has been named.
3. Anna Mary (nee Wolf) Creager, wf/o Christian Creager, according to family records died 15 February 1842 at age 64y, which is the same date and age given in the burial record for Mary A. Volte. The gravestone is very likely for Ann Mary (nee Wolf) Creager, which was moved according to other records, but is not mentioned in the burial record above. It is said that both Christian's and Anna Mary's gravestones were moved to David's Cemetery from the Creager Farm Graveyard/Cemetery in family records. And, Mary Ann Volte, is named wife of Valentine Creager in Montgomery Co., OH Book, p. 59. [KWS]
4. Could the "NS" (no stone) recording for Mary Volte really be for a Mary, wife of Velte (Valentine) Creager, and in transcribing records, an error was made. Since Valentine died so young, perhaps his wife, Mary, married a 2nd time to a Mr. Volte. Perhaps "Volte" is a transcription misspelling/misrepresentation/misreading for Velte or Valte (both nicknames for Valentine).

Valentine Creager
Born 10 August 1804
Died 15 June 1826
22y 10m 4d
[Burial record above seems to name a wife for a Valentine Creager. There is no family record that this Valentine ever married. ASH]

C. W.5 Creager
(aka Christian Wilhelm/William5 Creager)
s/o Casper4 CREAGER (Johann Christian3 Creager, Johann Casper2 Krieger/Creager, Hans Ernst1 Krieger) and Barbara Schmidt/Smith
Born 1812
Died 1892
William Christian Creager, an Evangelical Lutheran Church member, married a Catholic, Susan Dolan. Susan was buried at Cavalry Cemetery in Montgomery Co., OH. Click on his name to access his biography.

[Note: Internet, 03 July 2003, E-mail to ASH: Ken Striker of Dayton, OH states: "I went over to David's Cemetery this morning and found several of the stones to match your pictures. I found the C W Creager monument. It is indeed C W (I checked at the office) [not G W]. It stands about 12' high and on the one side reads born 'Nov 22, 1812; died Nov 1 1892'. No other information there except on the other side. I also found the small unreadable stone at the base of the C W Creager monument. I had difficulty with reading the small old stone, but found the same information on the other side of the C. W. Creager monument. It reads: "George Creager died May 31, 1861 aged 5y, 5m, 13d." This would be correct as the C W Creager biography indicates he had a deceased son George."]

Courtesy of: Reinhold B. Braunberger of Dayton, OH
18 May 2006

Reinhold tells us that this gravestone is for:
Margaret Creager and Mary Creager
[Note: These must be the two daughters (both died in 1822) of "Henry and Ana Creager" given in burial listing above. Parents are given for Margaret, but not Mary. Can anyone identify which Henry Creager this is and Ana, his wife? One Henry Creager died 1816. Was he the father? Another possible father could have been this Henry Creager [believed Johann Henry Creager] (1767-1844). And...is "Ana" the Susanne/Susannah (Wolf) Creager (1770-1837), who appears as wife of Henry Creager in above burial records? There is a gravestone for Henry who died 1816, but none for Henry who died 1844. ASH]

Left: Gravestone for Christian Creager.
Appears to be Christian Creager (1771-1836) [born 26 September 1774 ("Creager Family History") and died 8 Apr 1836 at 64y 6m 13d (gravestone)], s/o Adam Creager & Christina Hufford.
This Christian married Anna Mary Wolf (1778-1842).

Right: Gravestone for Susannah (perhaps nee Wolf) Creager, wife of Henry Creager
(perhaps Johann Heinrich Creager, s/o Conrad Creager and Anna Mary Eader/Eder/Ader/Ater)
"The grave stone of Henry Creager's wife, Susannah, located in the same row as Henry's. Stone reads: 'In memory of Susannah, wife of Henry Creager, who departed this life August 26, 1837, age 67 years, 10 months, 27 days.' "

Left: Henry, s/o Corbett & Mary
Who are the parents of Corbett Creager?
At the present my CREAGER files have no record of a Corbett and his wife, Mary. What is the maiden name of Mary, wife/o Corbett? Were there other siblings of Henry? ASH

Right: Henry Creager, perhaps Johann Heinrich Creager

Said husband of Susannah Creager. Gravestone below.
Perhaps the Henry who in the above records died 1816. ASH

"The graves stone of Henry Creager, now located in the David's Church Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. The stone which is badly worn reads as follows:
'In memory of Henry Creager who was born in Frederick County, State of Maryland on _________ in _________ day of __________' "
(Source: CREAGER File, Garst Museum, Greenville, Darke Co., OH: Picture of same gravestone. He is believed to be the husband of Susannah (nee Wolf) Creager, and both Henry's and Susannah's gravestone photos appear on the same paper. ASH)

ABNER and Mary E. CREAGER
Family Stone
Reinhold tells us, "The large marker is for the Abner & Mary E.Creager family. It is a family stone with two small ones next to it. It is also a marker for Zella [nee Creager] Krehbiel (daughter) and May L. Krehbiel.
[Note: I am assuming that Zella married a Mr. Krehbiel. Does anyone known his name? I am assuming May L. perhaps was an unmarried daughter of Zella and her Krehbiel husband. May L.'s name does not appear in the burial records that we have presently. Does anyone have additional information? ASH]

They were a big operation. I recall seeing their orange vehicles, which operated I believe from their Shroyer Rd. business."]
