Newspaper article in the Monterey Herald by Kevin Howe, published: November 8, 2012.
The Presidio of Monterey Museum will get a trove of memorabilia from the 1930s thanks to a chance encounter in a hospital cancer ward.
When retired Army Sgt. Robert Griffin II met Monterey Museum coordinator Jim Conway at the hospital some years ago, Griffin promised he would donate items from his days as a horse artilleryman at the Presidio to the museum.
Both men died before that pledge could be honored, but Griffin's daughter, Vicky Griffin Fultz of Salinas, knew about it. After her father's death, she searched for the items he spoke of and found them under a filing cabinet.
"I promised my dad if I found them, I'd donate them," she said.
What she found was a trove of documents dating from his time as a private first class at the Presidio, from 1936-39, as well as a photo album containing snapshots of troopers and their horses, panoramas of the Presidio and a group portrait of Griffin's unit, Battery D of the 76th Field Artillery.
After Griffin left the Army in 1939, he married and had children, Fultz said, then was called back for service as a combat engineer in the Pacific during World War II.
Among the items she discovered were wartime ration stamp books, a brass artilleryman's compass, pay records, letters written home from the Pacific, discharge papers from the Army and the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps, a serviceman's Bible bearing President Franklin D. Roosevelt's signature stamp, a scorebook for shooting - her father was an expert rifle shot - and videotape copies of films made of the Army's horse cavalry and horse artillery between the world wars.
The items will be presented Saturday to Cameron Brinkley, post assistant historian at the Presidio, for the post archives, and Greg Krenzelok, Fort Ord historian.
