I had the privilege to interview Joe at his home at Fort Jones, California in March of 2011. I had a lot of fun talking to Joe about his life and his time with the 11th Cavalry at the Presidio of Monterey, California. Joe said times were tough in our country in the late 1930s. Army life was good and we were happy just to have good food and a bed. I wouldn't have missed this interview for the world. I will be posting the interviews with Joe and his 11th Cavalry Horse Soldier pictures.

Private 1st class and 5th class horseshoer Joe Santone was with the 11th Cavalry at the Presidio of Monterey (Horse mounted) joined the Army on the East Coast in 1937 went by transport ship through the Panama Canal, then up to San Francisco where they disembarked. Where then quarantined on Treasure Island. Went to Presidio of Monterey by truck, joined Troop A in 1938 as a horseshoer. Scott Valley:
Longtime Scott Valley resident Joseph Michael Santone passed away on August 11, 2011 at Madrome Hospice in Yreka after a short illness. He was a young 92-year-old.

Joe was born on August 7, 1919 in Georgetown, Penn. To Donato and Maria Santone. Joe was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served with A Troop of the 11th Cavalry at the Presidio of Monterey, California from 1938 to 1940 when they were still horse-mounted and with the 10th Mountain Division, 257th Quartermaster Pack Troop in Italy during World War II, where he was a mule skinner and horseshoer. While fighting in Italy he visited the small mountain village in the area of Naples where his family was from.

After the war, he was a railroad conductor for many years in Santa Rosa. When he retired from the railroad, he moved to Quartz Valley, where he was a pack guide, outfitter and horseshoer for many years. He enjoyed working with his mules and still owned two when he passed on.

Joe is survived by his son Joe Santone and his wife Kim of Santa Rosa, California. His daughter Linda Lauridsen and her husband Bob of Rio Vista, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joe was proceeded in death by two wives, Frances and Louise.

No services are scheduled. Girdner Funeral Chapel is in change of cremation arrangements.

On the weekend of the 9th and 10th in 2011 I went up to Fort Jones, California to interview and visit with Joe Santone. Joe was with the 11th Cavalry (Horse) at the Presidio of Monterey from 1938 to 1941. Joe Santone: 11th Cavalry (Horse mounted) joined the Army on the East Coast in 1937 went by transport ship through the Panama Canal, then up to San Francisco where they disembarked. Where they were quarantined on Treasure Island. Went to Presidio of Monterey by truck, joined Troop A in 1938 as a horseshoer. He also moved with the 11th Cavalry, still horse mounted from the Presidio of Monterey to Seeley, California, to help protect our southern border at the being of World War II. Joe was a horseshoer. 11th Cavalry at the time was a part of 2nd Cavalry Division. I also had a chance to scan Joe's 11th Cavalry photo album. I also recorded our over 6-hours interview. He also had a copy of the 1938 Presidio of Monterey yearbook - Greg Krenzelok.
