Dear Greg
My name is Jim Scott and today I ran across your webpage for Luther Leonard Wragg. I found it by googling some names of my ancestors. There I found a picture of 3 men, one sitting on white bench includes my great-great uncle, Collie Trant Scott (man standing on the left). This is the first time I have seen a picture of him, though I have been to his gravesite in Iola, Texas where my grandparents are located. This find has created much excitement in my family.

This is what I know so far about Collie:

He was born 5-16-1895 and died 5-31-1922. So he was barely 27 years old. He was a brother to 8 other brothers and sisters. My records indicate he never married and had no children. I do not know the cause of death, but I suspect it was TB in Iola, TX because my grandmother told me many years ago that she heard that TB was rampant at that time and many were lost.

I have just sent off to St. Louis for his military records. I am interested in learning when he enlisted, where he was stationed and when/if he was discharged. I guess there is a possibility that he remained in the Army after the war and died while in service. His record will determine this.

Finding out he was in a Remount Squadron was no surprise to our family. The Scotts have been ranchers in Texas going back numerous generations and of course using horses in many capacities was second nature to them. Actually, my father was the first generation to break tradition and entered the oil industry when he left Iola, TX. His father, my grandfather, was a rancher and in the lumbar business building/supplying many of the livestock auctions houses/lots in the nearby counties. My grandfather, Roy Cecil Scott, also bread and raised Missouri Fox Trotters and was the Director for the Association for the State of Texas. A Missouri Fox Trotter is a pleasure riding horse with a unique gate, but similar to a Quarter Horse. Roy was 20 years old when Collie died, so I am sure he was very aware of his uncle Collie’s duties/function in the Army. Collie might have been the influence in my grandfather’s interest in the horse business.

Iola, TX is about 80 miles northwest of Houston and is a rural, ranching community.

Attached are 2 photos of Collie’s grave stones in a cemetery at Iola, one of which indicates the 306th and thanks to your website, our family now understands what the 306th was.

I have a canteen from WW1 says R.S. 306 U.S. 79 QMC looks like it belonged to someone in the Remount Squadron 306. It is kinda cool and I thought you might like to post it.

Hi Greg,
I'm a genealogist and am interested in finding out information on my great grandfather's military service in WWI. His name is Luther Leroy Kantner. He might have also gone by Leroy Luther Kantner. His gravestone reads: PVT 306 FIELD MT SQ QMC. I don't know much about military abbreviations, but after much googling, I stumbled on your rootsweb pages about 306TH FIELD REMOUNT SQUADRON and Corporal Luther Leonard Wragg.

Can you tell me if my googling is correct and my grandfather was indeed involved with this unit? And can you tell me where on the internet I might find more information on his military service?
