The First Veterinary Hospital was established in Neufchateau France using the few Veterinary Corps Officers available and soldiers from the 3rd Cavalry. The hospital with no equipment or water immediately began receiving patients and had to scrounge for supplies. Soon they had established a hospital with a capacity of 1000 horses staffed with borrowed manpower and ultimately handled 23,000 disabled horses from various evacuation lines.

THE MILILTARY RECORD OF MAJOR GEO. B. MCKILLIP
Major Geo. B. McKillip, U.S.A. was commissioned Major, V.C., December 11, 1917, and reported for active duty on December 28th, when he reported for temporary duty in the office of the Surgeon General, Washington D.C. December 28th to January 17,1918, took course of veterinary instruction at Washington, D.C. January 18, 1918, and reported to Camp Upton, New York, as Commanding Officer and Veterinary Hospital No 6 where this hospital was organized and trained prior to its transfer for overseas service. On March 27, 1918, he sailed from New York with Veterinary Hospital No 6 on the S.S. Olympic and landed at Brest, France on April 4, 1918. From April 4 to the 7th the Veterinary Hospital No 6 was at the Rest Camp just outside of Brest. Veterinary Hospital No 6 was then ordered to Neufchateau, arriving at that station April 11, 1918.
On September 12th he was relieved of command of Veterinary Hospital No 6, Neufchateau and assigned as assistant to the Chief Veterinarian of Base Section, Headquarters Bordeaux, Base Section No 2. September 20, 1918, Headquarters Base Section was transferred to St. Nazaire. From September 21 to March 1, 1919, he was assigned as Assistant Chief Veterinarian, Base Section No 2, and ordered to Beaune, Cote d'Or, A.E.F. University as Director of the Veterinary Department of the College of Medicine until June 17, 1919. He was relieved from this duty and ordered to report to St. Aignon for embarkation to the United States. He left Brest on the S.S. Great Northern on June 30th and arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey on July 6, 1919, He was ordered to Camp Dix, New Jersey for demobilization. Transferred to Washington D.C. for temporary duty in the Veterinary Division, office of the Surgeon General, upon completion of which duty he was discharged on July 12, 1919.

Greg,
I am a military artifacts collector and recently came across a WW1 item I knew little to nothing about. It is a French 105mm shell with trench artwork done on it. I previously knew about horses being used in the war, but I did not know what I know now after reading your websites and articles online. In the past, I had seen a lot of trench artwork on artillery shells, very decorative but not much history behind the subject matter. Please let me know if you would like to see the shell.
