U. S. VETERINARY HOSPITAL NO. 17 TRICONVILLE, FRANCE WW1

Note: My guess is that the above picture of the 17th Advance Veterinary Hospital was taken in France looking at the buildings. These were the typical buildings put up by the Army Engineers who built the camps in France. The engineers were never very excited about building a Veterinary Hospital due to all the extra work building the dipping vat and all the other things it took to build this type of a hospital. This picture could be at the hospital or maybe at the debarkation camp before leaving France. The lack of horses makes me believe it is the latter. The open windows were typical of the belief that ventilation was very important for health. A fine picture of the Advance Veterinary Hospital No 17. I have this picture of Veterinary Hospital No 17. It is framed and in very poor condition. I will not be able to scan it, but I'll try to come up with a better shot of this panoramic picture. Note: I decided to have this picture scanned and even know the quality of the picture is pretty poor we have a pretty nice view of the men of Veterinary Hospital No 17. Note: I am looking for a better print of this picture

I Just found your website on the vet corps and I thought that you might be interested to know that you have reached the youngest son of one of the vets in WW1 that was named in your site. His name was Major Harry G. Beauman. I would enjoy hearing from you.

I am trying to locate some pictures of dad but after 117 years things are hard to find. Dad was born June of 1890 and I was born in 42 so there is quite an age factor between myself and dad. I will attempt to locate any pictures and what info I can get fro others on dad's service

My father passed away in December 1970. I believe that he would be proud to have his pictures posted on the website.

NOTE: We are working with Major Harry G. Beauman's son Martin to do a little research on his dad and Veterinary Hospital No 17. Martin has not been able to positively identify his father in the above group unit picture of VC No. 17. According to the records I was able to come up with, his father was assigned to VC No. 17 and became the hospital's C.O. in September 11 1918.

In the above group unit picture of Veterinary Hospital No. 17 it appears the commander is a Captain and my best guess is that Harry G. Beauman is sitting to the right of the Captain but Martin cannot confirm this. Which means the above picture would have had to be taken before September 11, 1918. It is a little bit of a mystery that I hope that future research will solve.

PVT. VALENINE HARTMANN U. S. ADVANCE VETERINARY HOSPITAL NO. 17

This is a photograph of my Grandfather, Valentine Hartmann in his Army uniform during WWI.

Good evening, Greg.

I visited your website this evening and saw the photographs posted of Veterinary Hospital No. 17.

The location of my grandfather in the above group unit photograph is as follows:

Start with the last row of soldiers in the far upper right hand corner of the photograph. Start to scroll left. Scrolling left, notice that the building in back of the men has eight windows. Shortly after passing the eighth window you will notice the end of the building. The next soldier in the back row just past the end of the building appears to be beneath an exposed open end roof truss of the next building. You will also notice that the photograph has a tear through the back end of the soldier's cap, extending through his left ear and down the side of his neck, to his chest. The third person to the left of this soldier is my Grandfather, Valentine Hartmann.

March 25, 2020 - Update from Steve Hartmann grandson of Valentine Hartmann:

Hi Greg,
I hope that you are doing well. It has been quite some time since I last contacted you regarding U.S. Army Advance Veterinary Hospital 17 which was my grandfather's unit during WWI.

I have found that the port of embarkation for U.S. Army Advance Veterinary Hospital 17 was Newport News, Virginia. The name of the transport ship was the USS Antigone. The ship departed on October 28, 1918.

I also found that my grandfather after the war returned stateside aboard the troop transport USS Santa Clara. He did not return on the cruiser USS Huntington with his unit.

Biography of Valentine Hartmann

VALENTINE PAUL HARTMANN, JR.

Valentine Paul Hartmann, Jr. was born at the Hartmann family farm near La Vernia, Wilson County, Texas on February 27, 1892. His parents were Valentine Paul Hartmann and Anna Gleitz.

Valentine's father, Valentine Paul Hartmann, Sr. immigrated from Wiesenfels, Thuringia, Germany arriving first at Ellis Island, New York and from there to the Port of New York on May 07, 1884. From there he followed other newly arrived friends and neighbors from Germany to South-central Texas where they eagerly sought a new way of life in the United States.

Not long after their arrival Valentine's wife died, leaving him with one infant daughter. Two other children had immigrated with them but both died during the trip; one at sea before reaching New York, the second upon reaching New Orleans, Louisiana.

Valentine became a citizen of the United States on July 20, 1987 under oath at Guadalupe County, Texas. The signed oath stating that Valentine had renounced forever all allegiance and fidelity to William, Emperor of Germany.

Valentine then married Anna Gleitz on April 30, 1889 and started a second family of five children. In the year of 1891 Valentine moved his family to nearby Wilson County where he and Anna purchased a farm.

My Grandfather, Valentine Paul Hartmann, Jr. was the second child born in the family. Valentine lived and worked on the family farm into his mid twenties. On April 06, 1917 the United States entered World War I. Valentine reported to his local draft board on January 20, 1918. Later, on June 24, 1918 Valentine was inducted into the U.S. Army at Floresville, Wilson County, Texas.

It is uncertain where Valentine first reported for basic training. It is known that Valentine was assigned to the U.S. Army Veterinary Hospital No. 17, which was organized at Camp Lee, Virginia on September 06, 1918. Records indicate that U.S. Army Veterinary Hospital No. 17 shipped out to France from Newport News, Virginia on October 28, 1918.

Oral family tradition holds that while in France Valentine along with a detachment from his unit went out in the field. They soon found themselves cut off and found refuge in a foxhole. The weather was cold and rainy. To make matters worse the foxhole was ankle deep in water. It didn't take long for their feet to feel numb. The men also had no food as their supply line was cut. Late in the afternoon the officer in charge of the squad ordered the men to remove the bayonet from their rifle. They were then ordered out of the foxhole, to crawl into a nearby sugar beet field. Each man was instructed to use his bayonet to dig up sugar beets to eat for nourishment until their supply lines were restored.

On November 11, 1918 World War I ended with the surrender of Germany. Valentine was released from his unit on May 05, 1919. Before returning home oral tradition holds that Valentine took a military excursion tour of France and Spain. He arrived back in the United States on May 30, 1919 and was stationed at Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York until he received his honorable discharge there on June 04, 1919. He was issued a pass by the U.S. Army for railroad transportation and left for home via Pennsylvania Station, New York on June 04, 1919.

Upon his return to civilian life back in Texas, Valentine, now nearly twenty-seven years old moved to Comal County, Texas, married Catharine Hubertus on November 19, 1919 and settled down. Catharine's parents later deeded half of the family farm to them, where they operated a mixed farm, raising beef cattle, hogs and chickens and grew crops of corn and milo maize. Valentine also kept a small peach tree orchard and maintained an apiary.

Valentine and Catharine raised six children; four daughters and two sons. The two sons (twins), Hilmar and Othmar would later, on January 08, 1945 enlist in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served aboard the Essex class carrier, U.S.S. Bennington.

Valentine Hartmann passed away on February 09, 1976 at San Antonio, Texas. His wife, Catharine having predeceased him on March 17, 1971.

Note: Thank you Steve for this very nice Biography of your grandfather Valentine Hartmann. It gave me a chance to reflect on him as I was making this post. Making a post like this is a very special thing for me. I enjoy looking at a picture and thinking about this man and his life, what he saw and did in that life, the time he spent in France during the war and all the people he affected and still is affecting. I always handle putting together a post very carefully knowing that I am handling this man's life. And I always welcome this man back to his unit. His memory will not die now and he is back home with his unit the Advance Veterinary Hospital No. 17.
