Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON III CRAWFORD: The following is from the 1939 notes of Avis Valentine (Vallie) Rodman and Ira Carrie Seale George Washington Crawford III, was born on the Wahyah Creek, Macon County, about six miles from what is now Franklin, North Carolina. His father, George Washington Crawford Jr. was among the first settlers in that section of North Carolina. His education was received there, his major studies being geometry, astronomy, and botany. For two or three years he taught school, until several families in the county immigrated to Arkansas, and hired him to go along as their school teacher. Teachers were scarce then. While in Arkansas George W. Crawford III, met a Doctor Janes, and they became very close friends, and through Dr. Janes he became interested in the study of medicine. He not only had access to the doctor's medical library, but they studied, practiced and lectured together. While George W. never attended any medical school, he received his license to practice medicine. During the war of 1861-1865, (Civil War) he served all of the time (1861-1865) in the Confederate Army, acting as quartermaster Sergeant to General Bragg, who was a personal friend. Soon after the close of the war he married, (in 1866) Mary Susan Dugger, in Giles County, Tennessee, 15th District. George W. Crawford III was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a Temperance Organization, and Parent Teachers Association. His line of work followed, teaching, doctoring and farming. He lived at various times in Macon County, North Carolina; Arkansas; Giles County, Tennessee; Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama; Lexington, Lauderdale County, Alabama; and Bardwell, Carlisle County, Kentucky. He was killed in a railroad accident, April 10, 1905, in Bardwell, Kentucky. His wife (Mary Susan Dugger Crawford) died a few month later, November 24, 1905.
