18 August 1876 - State of Kentucky, Monroe County Court - Wiley, age 33, resident of Tompkinsville PO in Monroe Co., Ky appeared before the clerk and swore that he had enlisted in the service of the United States at Monroe County in Kentucky on 24 September 1861 as a private in Company B commanded by Captain Heinson in the 9th regiment of Ky Infantry in the war of 1861 and was honorably discharged on 15 December 1864 at Louisville, Ky. That while in the service and in the line of duty he received a wound in his breast and neck by the artillery wagon and team running over him and striking his breast and neck on 19 September 1863 in the battle of Chickamauga, Tn. Said wound runs nearly all the time. That since he was discharged 15 Dec 1864 he has never been employed in the military or naval service of the United States. Previous to his entering the service he was a farmer and earning his living by his farming. Since his discharge he has resided in Monroe Co., Ky and has managed his farm the best he could though he has not been able to do much and he is becoming less and less able to labor in consequence of said wound. It grows more and more painful and he becomes less and less able to work and labor. He is 3/4 disabled from obtaining his living by farming. W. S. Maxey was his attorney. John J. C. Eubank and Terin S. Watson also appeared in person as witnesses for Wiley.
18 August 1876 - State of Kentucky, Monroe County Court - Wiley appeared before the clerk and swore that he was wounded in the battle of Chickamaga in the State of Tennessee. He was wounded about 11 o'clock AM and was carried to the field hospital in Chatanooga. He remained there until 2 Feb 1864 when he was carried to Nashville and placed in hospital No 1 (a general hospital) and he remained there until about the 1st day of October 1864. He was never able to be with his regiment after he was wounded. When he was dismissed from the hospital at Nashville, it was to be discharged from the service. His Post Office address is Tompkinsville Monroe County Kentucky.

19 July 1878 - Adjutant General's Office in Washington, D. C. - Application for Pension No. 253239 - Wiley enrolled 24th Sept 1861 at Monroe Co KY in Co "B", 9th Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers, to serve 3 years or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on 26 Nov 1861, at Camp Boyle KY, in Co "B", 9th Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Rolls of Co "B" of that Regiment from enrollment to Aug 31st, 1862, he was present for duty. Roll for 4 months ending 31 Dec 1862. Present at near Murfreesboro Tenn. Subsequent rolls to 31 Oct 1863. Present Nov & Dec 1863. Absent sent to Hospt at Chattanooga 28 Nov 1863. Same report to Oct 31st 1864. Co M.O.R dated Dec 15th 1864. Pvt honorably mustered out with Co. Regtl Returns for 1862 not on file. No evidence of wound or of Co being in action Sept 19th 1862 on rolls of Co. The records of this office do not furnish any evidence of wound Sept 19th 1862 as alleged. His name is also borne as Wiley and Wiley C. Grissom.
9 May 1879 - State of Kentucky County of Monroe S Ct - Wiley Grissom states upon oath that he is the identically man whose pension application is no 253.239, he was a private Co B 9th Ky Infantry-War of 1861 (?) He can not furnish the affidavit of any surgeon who worked on him while in the service for the reason he does not know the name of but one of them. Dr. Jeffreys and he is dead and he is informed and believes - and he does not know his Post Office or the Post Office of any surgeon that worked on him. Though I was in hospital No 1 at Nashville Tennessee was sent there soon after I was wounded and remained there about 8 months. s/Wiley Grissom Subscribed and sworn to before me by Wiley Grissom May 9, 1879 I am totally disinterested in this matter.

about Feb 1893 - State of Texas, County of Wilbarger - In the matter of the pension claim of Wiley Grissom late of Co. "B" of the 9th Regiment KY, Inf. Volunteers. On this day personally appeared before me the undersigned duly authorized to administer oaths, the claimant who being by me duly sworn states in relation to his said claim as follows:
That he is unable to furnish the testimony of the Surgeons or Assistant Surgeons of his Regiment showing treatment of this affiant while in the service, for the reason that he was not treated by any Surgeon of his regiment while in the service for disease of Rheumatism; says that he was given proscription and exempted from duty on account of rheumatism by Dr Jeffreies, who was Surgeon of his Regiment but, that he is unable to show these facts by said Jefferries, for the reason that he is now dead, and has been since shortly after the close of the late war. Affiant states that there is now on file in his case the affidavit of Dr. John Simes, showing treatment of this affiant for disease of rheumatism since his discharge from the service of the United States, and that the said Simes, is the only physician who has treated him since his discharge, except Dr. E. D. Maxey, of Tompkinsville, KY and that he is unable to furnish the testimony of said Maxey, for the reason that he is now dead. He ask the Hon. Comissioner of Pensions to accept in lieu of the testimony of the Surgeons of his Regiment, the testimony now on file in his case. Says that his Post Office is Vernon, Wilbarger County Texas.

11 Apr 1914 - Declaration of Pension was completed in Tehama
Co. by Wiley at age 70. He was residing in Dairyville. Stated
that he was enrolled at Louisville, KY as Wiley Grissom on 24th
of Dec 1861 as Private in Co "B", 9th Reg. KY Vol. Inf.
Volunteers of US in Civil war and was Honorably Discharged at
Louisville, KY on 15th of Dec 1864. He's described as 6 feet 1
inches, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, occupation is
farmer, born January 17th 1844 at Tompkinsville, Monroe Co., KY.

12 Jan 1924 - Declaration of Pension was completed in Grayson
Co., TX by Wiley Grissom at age 80. Born January 17th, 1844 at
Monroe Co., KY. That he enlisted November 26th 1861 at Lebinon,
KY in Co B 9th KY Infantry Volunteer and was honorably discharged
Dec 15th 1864 at Louisville, KY, having served in the Civil War.
There was no other service. He was not employed in the US
Military or Naval service. He's described as 6 feet 1 inches,
fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and occupation was farmer.
Since leaving the service he resided at until 1889 KY. Since have
resided in TX and CA. Have resided in TX, the greater part of the
time. His occupation has been farmer. He requires personal aid on
account of the following disabilities: One eye taken out in 1897,
and practically lost sight of the other eye, at night cannot see
to get around at all, cannot see to read, am totally disabled on
account of the loss of my sight, have been in this condition for
two or three years, and growing worse very fast it seems to me.

8 Jul 1931 - Application for Reimbursement was completed in Grayson County, Texas by Mrs. G. M. Plumlee, aged 62 years, a resident of Sherman, Grayson, TX, for expenses paid in last sickness and burial of Wiley Grissom, who was a pensioner of US by certificate no. 240359 and died Feb 19, 1931 at Sherman, TX and buried at Sherman, TX. He was pensioned as a soldier. He was married only once and to Lurania Hestand Grissom, who died July 3rd 1921. There are no children under age 16. No sick or death benefits were paid on pensioner's account. There was no insurance in force on life of pensioner at time of death. There is no executor or administrator. The deceased pensioner did leave a 1928 Model Ford Car and 2 cows valued at $50. There is no real estate. Mrs. G. M. Plumlee, a widow, is the daughter of Wiley Grissom. Cause of death was heart trouble. He became sick on Jan 3rd 1931 and was so ill he needed regular and daily attendance. The attending physician was Dr. G. F. Brown of Sherman, TX. Wiley was nursed by Mrs. G. M. Plumlee at 325 West Middleton St., Sherman, TX. A list ofexpenses was given totaling $346.25 for medical and burial costs.

Also appeared J. C. Hestand and Mrs. C. C. Williams who know the claimant and that Wiley left no widow or minor child and that he died Feb. 19th 1931 leaving a 1928 Model Ford car and 2 cows valued at $50. We knew the deceased pensioner for 50 years and one.

On the 8th day of July 1931, Florence Modrall, Notary Public, Grayson Co., TX of Sherman, TX certified that the contents of the above were fully known and explained to the claimant and witnesses before swearing, that she had no interest in the prosecution of this claim and that the reputation for credibility of the witnesses whose signatures appear above is good. Statement of Attending Physicians - Wiley Grissom became sick Jan 3rd 1931 and died Feb 19th 1931. He required constant attendance from Jan 3rd 1931 till his death, during which time he was attended by his physician. Wiley died of Angina Pectoris. Mrs. G. M. Plumlee had acted as nurse.
