Mom Grissom

THIS IS YOUR LIFE, MOM GRISSOM

August 5, 1978 - Margaret E. Curtis Grissom was 95 years old

(by Mary Magdalene Elliott, Red Bluff)

Margaret Evaline Grissom was born August 5th, 1883,
She lived in North Carolina as happy as could be.
Her maiden name was CURTIS until she met her mate.
Then she was Mrs. Ulysses B. Grissom which sounded just great.

She had a good sized family, I believe they numbered nine.
There are six of these still living at this very time.
Cora Goodwin and Margie and Lucy makes three,
Then there's Benny and Marvin and then there is Lee.

There was no such thing as pollution in her early days,
Life was much simpler but harder in so many ways.
Hitch the team to the wagon was all they had to do,
They didn't have to buy high priced gas like me and you.

Grissom's owned a mule named "TOPSY" who'd take the kids to school.
But don't pass by no smelly pig pen with that ole mule.
She was flightly and high-spirited and would take off in a run.

Hard work was no stranger to this lady I'm talking about.
Her laundry must have been tremendous with out a doubt.
It was scrubbed hard on a wash board for this family of nine,
It was a real hard job and took a lot of time.

Her kids had shiny faces and their clothes were always clean,
An apron soiled by garden vegetables was the only dirt you seen.
She took pride in a clean house and her yard was just the same,
You can look at her yard today, and it puts the rest to shame.

Mom Grissom is a beautiful person, the lovliest I've ever met.
She mows her lawn with a hand mover, sometimes even yet.
She sets the record at age ninety-five-----------
A brother, Tom Curtis is still alive.

She's never had a drivers license but she's driven a car,
She jumped a curb up on Main St. before going very far.
Benny was so embarrassed at what Mom had done,
But isn't that just like all kids and especially a son?

There was a time in her life when her faith was real strong.
She was about to try something that she'd find out was wrong.
She had heard the story of Peter and how he walked upon the sea.
So she said to herself, "If Peter can do it, then why not me?"

So she went out to the horse tank and there took a swim.
Perhaps her faith was strong enough but the water was too thin.
The Lord saw fit to honor her for He didn't let her drown.
Since that time, she's learned to test her faith with her feet on dry ground.

Well, Hallelujah! Neighbor, it's birthday time once more!
And we're all looking forward to the joy it has in store.
We have the vittles ready and in our hearts - there's praise.
We hope that it'll remind you of the "good ole days".

There'll be feasting and singing and music too,
And the saints will shout the victory just the way they always do.
There'll be a Pot-Luck dinner down at Ide Adobe Park
We'll have a grand fellowship till its nearly dark.

So HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mom Grissom, from all of us to you.
You may never walk on water but there's something else you'll do.
Someday, you'll walk on streets paved with purest gold.
It is written in the Bible so we know that this is so.

We've looked forward to your birthday, and at last it's rolled around.
We're looking forward to lifes journey for we're all Heaven bound.
So keep right on believing and trusting in our Lord.
Jesus Christ is waiting to give you your reward.
