Dear Sister,
It has been quite a while since we have heard from you so I thought I would
write to you.
We are having a very rainy time here, it has rained twelve days in succession.
They had the high school fair Saturday. They had a pretty good crowd
considering the weather. The school displays were good. Martinville got 1st
place, Crow Branch second, and I think New California third.
Florence got first on a fancy towel, and the boys some places on corn, and I took
second on graham and white bread. I showed saffron buns, but didn't get any
thing on them.
Alice went to Madison a week ago today. She thinks she will go to vocational
school. She is working for her board.
Anita is working for Elmer Biddick's. Gladys likes her school alright. She was home for the fair.
Clarence has been sick with the summer flu. He missed two weeks of school and was in
bed ten days. We had Dr. Ketterer. Homer had the shingles in the summer. Dad took them to school this morning and stayed up town all day.
Did you know we had electric lights?
I was up to Willie Fosbinder's two weeks. They have a little girl. They call her Margaret Maxine.
Does Hazel Weir and Venora Pierstorff go to school down there this year?
Gladys is teaching down near Shullsburg. She has six pupils and gets ninety
dollars per month.
Florence, Homer, Dad & I went to Uncle Tom's Cabin show. It was a movie and
several people went with it. One was Chief White Wing in Indian dress.
Harry Griswold is sick.
Loretta Whittenheller teaches Martinville school. She boards at Yelinek's.
Homer Yelinek goes to U.W. at Madison. Harrison Allens boy stays at Yelineks
and goes to high school.
Well, I don't know what you know and what you don't, so will close.
With love,
Gertrude I.
