After the death, on 18 November 1918, of her first husband, Guy Franklin Phillips, who died during the flu epidemic
after the first World War, Selma Larsen Phillips remarried. She had two boys
from the first marriage, Frank and Richard. Her
second marriage was not a very good one. Her husband drank alot and beat her
and the two boys. Finally, Selma divorced him. It
was probably after the divorce that she gave up both Frank and Richard to be
placed in foster homes. This was a very rough
period in her life and it was impossible for her to support the two boys.
Later Selma married a third time, this time to a Larsen. This man took very
good care of her for the rest of her life.
Both Frank and Richard carried deep emotional scars from the second marriage
and never accepted her third marriage, but she
always let them know how good her husband was to her.
The scars were so deep for the two boys, that Frank never married and later
joined the army. Richard did marry,
however, to Victoria Dagmar Madsen on 10 January 1941 in Mason City, Iowa.---
