The Apron

The principle use of
Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it
served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven; it was wonderful for
drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty
ears.
From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and
sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came those old aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids; and
when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling-wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been
shelled it carried out the hulls. In the fall it was used to bring in apples
that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture
that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out on the porch and waved her apron, and
the men knew it was time to come in from the fields for dinner.
It will be a long time before anyone invents something that will replace that
old-time apron that served so many purposes.

MO. He married when he was age 21 and Annie was 18 when she married. His father
was born in KY and his mother was born in OH. Annie was born in MO and was age
38 and listed as his wife. Her father was listed as born unknown and her mother
was born in MO. Children were Rhoma, age 19, son, born in MO; Cora, daughter,
age 17, born in MO; Bertha was age 16, daughter, born in MO; Loren, son, age 14,
born in MO; Mamie, daughter, age 13, born in MO; Virgie, son, age 12, born in
MO; Dorothy, age 9, born in MO; Louella, age 7, born in MO; and Frank, son, age

and family # 97 was listed Jefferson Thompson, farmer, listed as age 41, and he
was born in AR. His parents were born in Illinois. Minnie was age 36. She
married at age 20 and Jefferson was age 25 when he first married. Gerald, son,
age 14, born in MO; and Nadine, daughter, age 11, born in MO. Kinsmen Richard
and Alice Elam lived next door. Richard was age 64 and Alice was age 62. Alice
married when she was 21 and Richard H. Elam was age 22 when he first married.
They were also farmers. Richard was born in MO and both of his parents were
listed as born in IL. Alice listed that she was born in MO and that both of her
parents were born in MO. The Elam family lived in household # 96 and were listed
as family # 96. Theon Boyer, a Servant lived with the Elam family. He was age 22
and born in KS.
Robert and Nancy Ellen (Haddock) Waters - Nancy who went by Ellen Haddock Walters is buried in the New Site Cemetery along with her baby who was named Mabel.
