Lydia Longley Haddock

1880 Federal Census, Page # 121- Haddock, Lidia, Whitfield County, GA, white, age 50, head of household, born in Tennessee, farmer and widowed, page #: 121. Cannot read/write.; Haddock, John T. Whitfield, Georgia, age: 18, farmer, single; and Haddock, Margaret A., age 13, female born in Georgia; Georgia A., age 11, born in Georgia.

David and Lydia Longley were married abt 1853. Lydia was the daughter of John C. Longley and Hannah Ray. She was born 13 May 1829. There has been some confusion over the name Longley-Langley. I received an extended document from the Longley family, telling me that Lydia was a Longley. They told me that John C. Longley was the son of William C. Longley. One of the sons of William C. Longley was Andrew Jonathan Longley. Andrew Jonathan's son Reuben changed the "o" in his last name to an "a" and the descendants from Reuben became Langleys.

From Haddock Heritage, Second Edition, pub 2003

David Haddock was born March 15, 1806 in Pitt County, North Carolina David Crenshaw Haddock was a wagon maker. His wife was Elizabeth Ault who was born 1806 and who died abt 1848. David Haddock lived in Monroe County, Alabama in 1840 and in Walker County, Georgia in 1850. He was located in Hamilton County, TN in 1860 and Whitfield County, Georgia, in 1870. [Ref: Judy Haddock Swan, descendant] David Crenshaw Haddock married three times and had 17 children.

Census listings: 1830 Monroe Co., TN; 1840 Madison Co., AL; 1850 Walker Co., GA; 1860 Hamilton Co., TN; and 1870 Whitfield Co., GA. [Ref: From the files of Judy Haddock Swan]

In 1840, Madison Co., AL, Federal Population Schedules, US Census, David Haddock had 1 male 30 to 40, 1 male under 5, 1 male 5 to 10. He had 1 female under 5, 2 females 5 to 10, 1 female 20 to 30. His occupation was listed as being in agriculture.

David Crenshaw Haddock arrived with his family in Georgia in the 1840's, residing first in Catoosa Co. then on to Whitfield Co, residing in Hamilton Co., TN, and Alabama for periods in between his Georgia stays. David was married to Elizabeth Ault about 1828, in TN, with whom he had nine children. It is believed that Elizabeth died in childbirth, as her death date is the same as the birth date of her daughter, Elizabeth. David married a second time to Selena Bayliss and produced a son named Horace, born abt 1851. His wife died soon after childbirth and the maternal grandparents raised the little boy that was named Horace. He is located in the Federal Population Schedules, US Census records by the name of Horace Bayliss. David's next marriage was to Lydia Longley/Langley. They had seven children, the first four were born in Hamilton Co., TN, and the last three born in Whitfield Co., GA. [Ref: From the files of Judy Haddock Swan]

On the 1860, Federal Census of Hamilton Co., Tennessee, David's two daughters from his previous marriage, Martha and Elizabeth were living in the house along with he and his new wife and their children. 1860 Federal Population Schedules, US Census, Hamilton County, TN, House 368, family 370. David Haddock, age 53, a wagon maker, born in NC. His wife was Lydia age 30 born in TN. Children were Martha, age 16, born in GA; David, age 14, born in GA; Elizabeth, age 12, born in GA; Nancy, age 6, born Tennessee; Sarah, age 3, born in TN; Lydia, age 3, born in TN; and Thomas, age 2 mos born in TN.

[Ref: Legends of the Haddock Family, by Hugh Haddock] He was quite small when his parents moved from the Carolina to Kentucky and was in his teens when his parents continued on into Tennessee. It is said he walked with a limp due to falling from a tree and getting a thorn in his heel when he was just a boy. He had red hair and in manhood weighed well over 200 pounds. he was a skilled carpenter and blacksmith and taught the trades to his sons. He was a Methodist. Even though David was in his late fifties at the time of the Civil War, he must have been drafted into the Confederate Army, Company 1, First (Galt's) Regiment, Infantry, as a private. He was listed on the muster roll Dec. 1, 1863 to Jan. 3, 1864. Evidently he was physically unable to serve as we found no further record of him. His first wife was Elizabeth Ault. They were married sometime between 1825-1830 in Tennessee. Eight children were born of this marriage. Elizabeth was born about 1809 or 1810, perhaps in Tennessee. She died June 26, 1848, probably in childbirth, since that is the date of birth of her youngest child.

Some of David's descendants say he married a second time and that his wife died when her son, Bud, was three weeks old and the maternal grandparents reared him. We have not found enough proof to be sure this marriage existed. A marriage to Lydia Longley followed. Lydia was born May, 13, 1829, in Tennessee. Seven children were born of this union. David died Oct. 8, 1875, in Whitfield County, GA. He and his wives are buried in the family cemetery near Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia. The graves are unmarked. James Luther Haddock indicates that David probably could not serve due to a injury to his heel. Hi apparently walked with a limp. He believes the injury came from stepping on a thorn or something.

David's occupation was listed as a mechanic on the 1850 Federal Population Schedules, US Census of Whitfield Co. He died 8 Oct 1875 and is buried in an unmarked grave in the family cemetery in Dalton, GA. [Ref: From the files of Judy Haddock Swan]

Whitfield County, Georgia Records Will Book A. Page 182 is listed the will of David Haddock who died Oct 8, 1875. And then another will concern the estate was located. It reads: [Ref: Deed Book E, Page 41] Haddock, Lydia to Georgia Alice Lowery dated Nov 15, 1892, recorded January 23, 1904, Whitfield County, Georgia. And also this deed has kinship to the others given above.

[Ref: Deed Book E, Page 42] From Alice Lowery of James County, TN. (Hamilton now) to Lucinda Head of Whitfield County, Georgia dated August 21, 1903. For $25.00 and certain acts and services and things to be performed by the said G. A. Lowry: to wit: to furnish wholesome food and sufficient and comfortable clothing to nurse and take care of the said Lydia when she is sick during her natural life: 50 acres of LL # 145, 10th District, 3d Section.

The Haddock family had reported that Georgia Alice was born in 1869, but you can see here that her birth was in 1868. Also the family had her death as 1901 and that too is incorrectly stated. Research by Kenneth Haddock uncovers new information that Georgia Alice Haddock married second Frank Pitts. She was buried at Boynton Cemetery, Boynton Georgia in Catoosa County. Georgia Alice Haddock remarried after John Spurgeon Lowry died. He apparently died in 1901.
