Walter Jones, Jr., son of Walter Jones, Sr. and Alice Bishop

Walter Jones's father made his will in 1696 or sometime there about. He calls Walter his eldest [sic] son. William, a brother of Walter's is still alive and is mentioned also. Among his children who were listed, Ellinor Mason was mentioned. Ellinor had connections to the Haddock family. Abraham Hall was also mentioned in other documents of the Bishop family and of the Haddock family. The abstract of that Talbot Co., will reads: Jones, Walter, Talbot Co., Maryland, (maybe in 1696?) Wife Alice, extx. and sole legatee of estate, real and personal, during life. To eld. son Walter, all real estate at death of aforesaid wife; to pay to his brother Robert Jones when of age, certain money. To daughter Mary and to daughter Ellinor Mason, personally. Test: Sam'l Sheffield, Abraham Hall, Josias White. [Ref: Maryland Calendar of Wills, 7. 317]

From the information given that is to follow, The Church of England, places Walter Jones in Virginia and then in North Carolina. He may have served in Virginia sometime between 1700 and 1720. Then in 1724, the Church of England places his residence in North Carolina. [Ref: The Church of England] Warrant, June 7, 1700 [Mr. Brett Chaplaine 20 pounds. After etc. By Virtue of the Generall Letters Patents Dormant bearing Date the 8th April 1689. These are to pray and require You to draw an Order for paying unto [blank] Brett Clerk or his Assignees the sume of 20 pounds for his passage to Carolina when he is going Chaplaine And lett the Same be satisfyed out of any his Majestys Treasure being and remaining in the Receipt of the Exchequer Applicable to the Uses of the Civill Government For which Thisshall be your Warrant Cockptt Treasury Chambers 7th of June 1700. Samuel Thomas, August 11, 1702. Although the warrant specified North Carolina, Thomas had actually been appointed missionary to South Carolina by the SPG and took up his duties there. John Blair, April 17, 1703, John Adams, Sept 26,1707, John Urmston Sept 1, 1709, Thomas Newman [as Thomas Newman] October 19, 1721, Walter Jones and Richard Hewitt, Dec 17, 1724. These two served in Virginia rather than North Carolina. John Blacknall, June 7, 1725, John Boyd Oct 3, 1732, James Moir Nove 13, 1739, Thomas Burgess Oct 2, 1741. [Ref Records of the Church of England, page 5] Other documents in the same text give information that indicates that Walter Jones was a missionary for the Church of England. [Ref: page 300] Dec 1724, Journal of the SPG, Dec 18. Petitions of Mr. Walter Jones and Mr. Richard Hewitt offering their Service to the employed as Missionaries in North Carolina were read, and their Testimonial were also laid before the Board and read: Ordered that they read Prayers and Preach on the 8th Verse of the 2nd Psalm, upon the first Sunday in January, Mr. Jones at 10 in the forenoon at Mr. Spartemans Church, in the hearing of the Master of the Charterhouse and Mr. Sparteman; and Mr. Hewitt at St. Michael Basishaw in the afternoon in the hearing of Dr. Mayo and Mr. Baker [...]

In 1718 Beaufort Co., NC, Walter Jones took a patent for land in Beaufort County, NC, This seems to be the first recording of him in North Carolina. Other documents from the church have named him a missionary and have suggested that he first lived in Virginia after leaving Maryland and that he then went on to North Carolina. Another abstract located nearby and in Beaufort, has other family connections. Thomas Blount was related to the Bonner and other families that Simon Peter Jones, Walter's son, was intermarried with. The abstract reads: Walter Jones, S'o Side Pamlico, 218 acres, Patent 218. Rob't Taylor, Di Ho, 200 acres - Survey 200. Also located there was Thos. Blount, S'o Side Pamlico, 610 acres} for Orph'a Tyler - Di Ho, 640 acres} Survey for Di Ho, S'o Side Hus (?) 640 } 1890 total acres.

A deed for land in 1719/20, places Walter in the early founding of Bath County, NC. Some of Beaufort was part of Bath at one time. That abstract reads: [Ref: Page 321] 1719/20 - Thomas Worsley, Bath Co., NC, to Walter Jones, Bath Co. - 25 pounds - 200 acres north side Pamptico River Northwest side of Duck Creek, as by deed June 6 _____ from said Worsley to said Walter Jones. Deposition of Thomas Unday (?), Beaufort Precinct, being of full age, swore that "sometime in Jan. 1718, at the plantation that is now James Robbins, one Elizabeth Goodin, with Sarah Montague did go to bed in the same house one night, and that presently after one James Robbins did go into bed between them, with his shirt and breeches only on, then said the same Elizabeth Goodin, Mr. Robbins why do you come to bed with your breeches on? Whereon the said Robbins pulled off his breeches and went into bed between them again, and there did lay that night with them, and in the morning following, the aforesaid Sarah Montague arose and left the said James Robbins and Elizabeth Goodin in bed together, and this deponent further saith that at the same time he gave the said James Robbins and Elizabeth Goodin each a dram of liquor called rum as they lay in bed together ..." In 1755, Dorothy is mentioned in a deed. Walter died in 1728, but he had a son named Walter who was still living. And also Dorothy was still living in 1757. It's not known for sure when she died, but she was only 20 years old in 1720 so she was much younger than he and probably lived into the 1780 or 1790's. This was likely Walter's son who was named Walter made the following deed.

[Ref: Beaufort Co., NC, Deed Book 3, page 333] Date of deed is not known but it was recorded in 1747. Walter Jones of Beaufort Co., planter and Dorothy, his wife ... Whereas Henry Lucas of Beaufort Co., planter by deed dated 29 June 1755, gave to his daughter Elizabeth Lucas sundry goods and chattels viz. Negroes and household furniture and heirs and in cases she died without issue to Dorothy, the wife of Walter Jones to be delivered after the decease of said Henry, Walter and Dorothy here quit claim this property to said Henry. Deed book 3, page 351 was dated 1757 and recorded in Dec. Ct. 1757. [Research Note: Assumed date of this deed would be in that time frame. Abstracted from microfilm in NC. State Archives]
