Anthony Weary was christened to Jeremy Weary at Crediton, Devonshire, England, March 11, 1672/73.

Albemarle Precinct: September ye 4th Anno 1701. Anthony Wherry Recorded His Marke being a crop and A sleet In ye Left Eare and An under Square on ye Rite Eare.

In 1702 Anthony Wherry paid taxes in Perquimans County, NC. He was listed with William Johnson and reported 8 Negroes and with 8 tithables.

Anthony Wherry's name appeared in the Perquimans records in 1704. An appraisement - assignment of a land patent acknowledged from Archibald Holmes to Anthony Wherry and ordered to be recorded in 1704.

In 1706, October ye 30th, John Foster entered 300 acres of land in Perquimans Precinct adjoining to the lands of Thomas Houghton on the east and the lands of Colleton Sturgeon on the west and soe running to Anthony Wheryes [sic] South line to Yeapin Creek.

Caleb Callaway - County not given 10 Jun 1706 and probated on 13 Jun 1706, names son and executor: Joshua (plantation on Yawpim). Daughter: Rachel, wife of John Wiatt. Granddaughter: Elizabeth Wiatt, daughter of John Wiatt (one Negro). Wife: Elizabeth. Witnesses: Thomas Long, John Barrow, Anthony Wherry. Clerk of the Court: Thos. Snoden.

Albemarle, Perquimans Precinct: 545 B: No. 155: Lords Proprietors to John Norcom, 450 acres on the South West of Yeopim Creek beginning at the mouth of a small Gutt which parts the said land from Anthony Wherrys and binding on the said Gutt and Anthony Wherry's line s 24 d west 320 pole to a pine the said Anthony Wherry's corner tree then s 79 d wt 20 pole to a red oak sapling then SW 38 pole then binding on said creek to the first station ... Being due for the importation of one person for every 40 acres as appears upon record under this patent .... Francis Foster, Charles Eden, T. Knight, William Reed, N. Chevin, C. Gales. According to a list of tithables taken by James Coles, Albemarle, June the :30: in the yeare of our Lord 1702, Anthony Wherry paid on 8 tyhables. He was listed with Gab Johnson.

In Albemarle, Perquimans Precinct, Anthony was listed in 1712, in a list of tythables that was taken by Richard Skinner Constable for one part of Perquimans Precinct on December the 9th, 1712. He had one tythable. He lived between John Jordan and John Norcom. Anthony Wherry was also listed for the years of 1714, 1715, and 1716.

Thomas Harvey, Perquimans County - 10 Apr 1729, probated 10 Nov 1729. His will mentions sons: Thomas ("Plantation whereon I now live"), John (plantation called the Quarter), Benjamin (plantation called Foulks (or Foleks) Point), Miles (land on Chowan River in Rockahock Neck bought of Samuel Woodard). Brother: Miles Gale of Boston. Brother-in-law: Col. Robert West. Nieces: Martha, Sarey and Mary West (daughters of Robt.). Sisters: Elizabeth Clayten and Penelope Little, wife of William Little. Other legatees: James Sitterson, William Tetterton; John son of John Cole of Nansemond, Virginia; Joshua Wherry son of Anthony Wherry; Elizabeth Wherry daughter of Anthony; Edward Moseley and Thomas Pollock. Wife and Executrix: Elizabeth. Executors: Miles Gale, William Little, Edward Moseley and Thos. Pollock, John Lovick. John Odeon was one of the executors of the Salter will. Edward Salter, Bath County, NC, 06 Jan 1734, and probated on 05 Feb 1734. Edward willed to his son: Edward. Daughters: Sarah, Mary and Susannah. Sons-in-law: Miles Harvey and John Harvey. Wife: Elizabeth. Following lands devised: 306 acres on south side of Pamlico River called Mount Colvert; land purchased of John Swann; lands on Bear Creek, Pamlico River and the Beaver Dam of Grays Creek, "whereon John Arrington now dwells." About 25 Negroes, one periauger, one brigantine named The Happy Luke, one pair silver spurs, Richard Bloom's History of the Bible and other books "of Divinity, Law and History," large China Punch bowl bequeathed. Brigantine ordered laden with tar and sent to Boston, there to be sold and proceeds invested in young negroes; provision is made for insurance of said vessel with Jacob Windall & Co., in the sum of 1,200 pounds. Daughter, Sarah, is left in care of Mrs. Sarah Porter of Cape Fear. Provision is made for education of son "to make him a complint merchant." Richard Odeon was born before 1708 because in his father's will he was mention. In Bath Town, Page 97: Apr. 5, 1708, the will of Richard Oden, proved at Court at Bath Town, on Jan. 4, 1708/9, mentions his son Richard. It reads to son - William Oden - "my land in Virginia whereon I formerly lived" 4 sons - land where now live: on - Richard Oden - "at the head of my lands on the main creek" Son - John Oden - "at the beginning small branch above my plantation which runs into the main branch that parts Simon Alderson and I Son - Atta (Otto?) - "between son Richard and where I now live" Son - Charles - "plantation now live on" Wife - Elenor Son Will excepted from any share of personal estate. New Bern District Court: Civil Action papers: DSCR.206.325.1: Folder: 1768: Information: 1) Petition of Robert Nichols by his attorney Patrick Gordon against Benjamin Pickamill by his attorney Richard Caswell: Nichols states that Pickamill, merchant, owes him 38 pounds for the freight of 24 Hogsheads and 28 Tirces or half hogsheads of molasses and 6 pounds for the passage of Pickamill from Hispanola to New Bern on Board a vessel of which Nichols was the master. Pickamill denied the claim. 2) Jury of Edward Frank, Francis Fonville, George Phenny Lovick, Simon Bexley, Cason Brinson, Emanuel Simmons, William Rupell, John Hatch, Richard Odeon, Benjamin Pearce, Nathan Archdale, James Hamilton was called to hear the case, but neither the plaintiff or his attorney appeared. Cozen Hannah Smaw - Gold ring, Silver Girdle buckill, silver teaspoons, tongs and skimmer. Brother Antony Whery, Negroes Gin, Dinah, Betty, Sarah and Tom. Sister Mary Mills, 20 pounds. Sister Sarah Flaniken, pray book use of my Negro fellow four years. Sally daughter or Col. Research Note: Thomas Respress was born abt 1755 in Bertie County, NC, and was the son of Henry and Sarah (Topping) Respress. He married Prudence Reddit abt 1790. John Smaw was the son of Henry and Mary (Respress) Smaw and they lived in Northampton or Accomack Co., VA.

There were Smaw families in Beaufort there is a will of 1782, listed in Beaufort County, NC, where Mary Smaw named John, Henry, Lucretia and William. And in 1795 there is another will where Henry Smaw named wife Mary.

The Harmon Family

Robert Harmon came into the Albemarle area of North Carolina as a Quaker because on 4, 6, 1694 in Perquimans MM of Perquimans Quaker Minutes listed in Hinshaw, Robert Harmon was given as having misconduct listed on his record. Ref: Supplement, Volume 1, Page 4, of Ency of Quaker Genealogy, by William Wade Hinshaw.

Ref: Perquimans County Deeds] Jane Charles had a grant for land in Perquimans for 200 acres on the Southwest side of Western Branch of Yampim [sic] Creek at a branch that divides said land from Robert Harmon, April 1, 1694.

Robert Harmon was mentioned in Henderson Walker's will: In the name of God Amen. I, Henderson Walker, being well in body and of perfect mind and memory, Considering the uncertainty of this life Doe make and ordeyne this my Last Will & testam't. European settlement near the Pamlico River in the 1690s led to the creation of Bath. It was North Carolina's first town in 1705. The town's location was ideal with easy access to the river and the Atlantic Ocean 50 miles away at Ocracoke Inlet.

In 1723 the first Beaufort County courthouse was built in the town. In 1734 the construction on St. Thomas Church, oldest existing church in the state began. About that time a ferry service was established across the Pamlico River, and a post road linked Bath to New Bern and Edenton.

By 1708 Bath, NC, consisted of twelve houses and something like 50 people. Tobacco was important, the trade in the naval stores was good, and furs were also traded. Bath became the first port of entry into North Carolina. In 1707 a grist mill was build and the colony's first shipyard were established in town.

Early Bath, NC, was disturbed by political rivalries, epidemics, Indian wars, and piracy. In 1711 Cary's Rebellion began. It was an armed struggle over religion and politics in the colony. And in 1711 an epidemic of yellow fever and a severe drought occurred.

Mar. 25, 1717 - John Porter and Thomas Harding, Bath Co., Commissioners of Town of Bath, to Edward Travis [Mills relative] 10 shillings, front of a lot of land in Bath Town, #12, bounded to North on Lot #13 now in possession of Joseph Morgan, to South on Lot #11 now in possession of Nicholas Roach, to West on Bay Street said front lying between Bay Street and the Creek to low water mark and runs parallel to said lot. Wit: C. Gale. Acknowledged Mar. 25, 1717.

John Williamson arrived with his brother George to Virginia from England. Family was originally named Williamson, and John was bonded to the Freeman family when he arrived in America. When freed from bondage in 1680s, John adopted Freeman as his surname.

John Freeman was in Lower Norfolk Co., VA (now the City of Chesapeake) as early as Oct 1673. He and his wife both died between May 15 and 18, 1711 in Norfolk Co., VA. He lived near the Western Branch of Elizabeth River, adj. the Great Dismal Swamp, near the boundary with Nansemond Co., VA.

Norfolk Co., VA, Book 9, pages 179-181, listed are two deeds, which are lease and release from William Freeman son of John Freeman and Hannah to his brothers John and Thomas. "2 & 3 October 1711 William ffreman of the County of Norfolk of the one part and John ffreman for and in consideration of the brotherly love and affection that he bears unto the said John ffreman ... about 50 acres now in tenure and occupation of the said John ffreman bounded on the Land of Thomas Willoughby and Thomas Wooden and is part of a patent of four hundred acres granted unto my father John Freeman deed dated the 6th day of June 1676. William Freeman purchased land in Chowan Precinct of Albemarle County, NC. It was a tract of 250 acres of land on the South side of Katherine Creek Swamp. On July 1, 1716 and he bought it from Thomas Garrett, Sr., and his wife Bethiah.

William and his wife Mary also sold 100 acres of land on the South side of Katherine Creek on July 11, 1718 to Michael Ward. William was a wealthy and prominent planter of the Albemarle and Chowan County areas. He owned large amounts of land and several slaves. At the time of his death he owned five plantations.

In 1718 in Chowan Co., NC, listed in Deed Book 1, page 607 was a deed for Thomas Garrett. Sr., of Chowan Prect. and Bethia his wife to William Freeman of the same Prect. 10 July 1718, 80 £ sterling 250 acres on the south side of Katherine Creek swamp joining Walter Draughan near ye fork of a branch known as Cypress branch, Michael Brinkley and the said creek swamp all houses, Orchards etc. part of a patent for 500 acres dated 15 May 1697 Wit: Thomas Garrett, Jr.; Michael Ward; John Goodwin Rec. 11 Nov 1718

Mills Family

It took 1242 pages to tell the Mills story and it can be read in Mills Heritage, which is my most recent book. It was finished in Oct of 2004. Since I have three different Mills families, it seemed only fitting that I be the one to unscrambled the family lines. The Mills family I wrote about is described in the boxes below and is not related to the Quaker Mills families of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and NC.

He was christened to his parents and married in Cratfield, Suffolk, England.	William & Tabitha (Wight) Mills. He was born in Cratfield, Suffolk, England and christened to his father. He left a will naming his sons.	John & Mary (O'Luinie?) Mills. John left a will in Prince George's Co., MD. In his will, he named some of his grandchildren who were living in NC.	Robert Mills. He may have married someone named Nesbit. He was born in Calvert Co., MD and probably died in NC. His brother named his sons as nephews in his will.

Nasby & Mary (Wherry) Mills of Craven Co., and Pitt Co., NC. He was named in his uncle's will. She was named in some of the Wherry family wills. They are buried in NC.	Anthony Mills of Craven Co., NC. He may have married a Clark.	Charles & Penelope "Penny" (Mills) Haddock, Sr. They are buried in Bourbon Co., KS in unmarked graves at Mt Oram.	Charles & Sarah (Collins) Haddock, Jr. He was murdered by Bushwhackers in AR. They are buried at New Site Cemetery in Barry Co., MO.	Noah & Harriett (Crumley) Haddock - They died in Barry Co., MO, buried at Chitwood Cemetery. He was a Confederate in the Civil War.

Samuel Sanders & Gertrude (Addington) Haddock - They are buried at King's Prairie in Barry Co., MO. Her mother is buried in the same cemetery.
