6. MATTHEW2 HALL (WILLIAM1) was born February 05, 1798 in Rutherford Co., NC, and died 1869 in near
Newburg, OR. He married MALINDA HALL 1824 in St. Louis, MO, daughter of JOHN HALL and ELIZABETH. She was born Abt. 1805 in NC, and died Abt. 1883 in Yamhill Co., OR.
Notes for MATTHEW HALL:
They moved to Oregon in 1847. Matthew and Malinda had 3 sons and 4 daughters.
Matthew learned the blacksmith trade as a youth in North Carolina. As a young man he settled in Macoupin
Co. IL where he worked at this trade for a number of years before crossing the plains in 1847. The family arrived in Oregon on 13 Oct. 1847, spending the first winter at Molalla, Clackamas County. In the spring he engaged in ranching near Astoria, but soon went to Portland and worked at his trade there until 1849. The people of that town offered him house and lot and a place to put his ship, but he chose to settle on a farm near present Newburg in Yamhill County instead.
There he left his family and ventured to the California mines for a year, then returned and settled his donation
land claim (Oregon City # 3473) on the farm mentioned above on 6 Sept 1850, where he resided until his death. He was known far and near as "Squire" Hall due to hus just and impartial rulings as Justice of the Peace for between twelve and fourteen years.
On 18 Jan 1869, a coroner inquest was held in Yamhill Co on the death that day of Matthew Hall. The coroner's
report indicates there was an altercation between Matthew and his son, Presley. As a result, Presely shot his father. Exactly what happend is not completely clear in the report. Malinda stated that Matthew had told Presley to make a fire and that when Presley went to do so Matthew ordered him to leave the house, which Presley said he would do. Instead, he evidently grabbed a gun which was to the right of the fireplace and shot Matthew. Thomas Eubank, who was there when it happened, but apparently outside, heard Presley say that Matthew was "terables" (sic terriblest) man he ever saw, and the old man told him to get out of the house. Presley responding that he would as soon as he got his boots on. Then Eubank heard an oath from Presley and heard a gunshot, and a moment a second, at which time he ran to the nearby home of Matthew's son, Lafayette, to get help. Lafayette Hall in testimony said that when he arrived, while Presley did not say he had killed his father, he did ask Lafayette to forgive him, saying "father was abusing mother." One possible interpretation that might be made is that Malinda tried to intercede between the impatient Matthew and their son and that Matthew struck out at her, the action proving to be the "last straw" for Presley. An arrest warrant was issued the same day as the inquest, but Presley could not be found according to the return of 22 January.
Lafayette Hall was appointed administrator of Matthew's estate on 1 Feb 1869. Presley's name is listed among
the heirs, his residence given as Chehalem Valley. Possibly the authorities decided the homicide was either accidental or justified or if he was ever charged set a light sentence as Presley was listed in Lafayette's household in 1880 census.
Notes for MALINDA HALL:
Malinda remarried the year after Matthew's death. William Jones was also a pioneer of 1847. The Yamhill County
Circuit Court Journal notes a divorce suit brought by William Jones against his wife "Melinda" was dismissed 14 Nov 1871. She is also residing in the household of Lafayette Hall in the 1880 census. She died in 1883 and her estate records are under the name "Malinda Jones."

one murdering Davis, married a Mr. Harris or Harrison and died long since having children whose whearabouts are unknown."
from "Leaves from A Woman's Private Journal" unknown author, daughter of Oliver W. Hall
Narcissa had a son with John Davis named Harrison. She married Austin Webb in 1841, so John must have died
1840-41 as he is shown in the 1840 Van Buren IA census. Narcissa and John also had daughters, but names are unknown. I believe Narcisssa died before 1850, probably in IA.

she would have been related to Thomas B. Fowler that married Terrill's sister, Matilda. |

IL. He married SARAH HOLLAND Abt. 1782 in North Carolina. She was born Abt. 1766, and died Bet. 1842 - 1845 in Prob Madison Co., IL.
Notes for WILLIAM HALL:
"David Hall, my great great grandfather, came from England and settled in North Carolina and married Miss Susan
Miller, an intelligent, educated, beautiful brunette, but a woman of most ungovernable temper. On account of that temper, he left her with their three sons and is supposed to have settled in Virginia, remarried and reared another family. Tradition says he was a soldier in the revolutionary war, and that he kissed one of his sons, while that son, who was also a soldier, slept behind a fallen tree. And that son was William Hall my great grand father, who inherited his mother's temper and drank to excess in his youth but lived to be very old."
from "Leaves From A Woman's Private Journal" unknown author, daughter of Oliver W. Hall.
William Hall was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In 1832, he was granted a pension of $65 per
year. His grave had a marker placed by the Collinsville DAR giving heed to his Revolutionary War service.
Unfortunately, the plaque is no longer there.

He had pale blue eyes, stiff, iron gray hair, was indolent but was called an honest man; was unkind to his family but liked me. He sleeps in death, unhonored, unwept and unsung."
from "Leaves from A Woman's Private Journal" unknown author, daughter of Oliver W. Hall
On the front of James Hall's probate file it was written:
"This James Hall was the first white inhabitant of Macoupin County. Settled May 1824 in then part of Green &
Madison County IL. Cabin built in Polk Township 6 miles SW of Carlinville about 200 yards SE of Macoupin Station."

Notes for NANCY MINERVA HALL:
In memoirs written by Stella S. Berry, it mentions that James Hall had a daughter that married Lee Brown of Shaw's
Point, and that her mother was James' 3rd wife, Elizabeth Davis. Since James and Elizabeth did not marry until 1838, and because of the fact that Nancy M. Hall is listed in the 1850 Macoupin Co. census in the same household as Thomas Whitworth and his wife Sarah (Booton), I believe that Polly Booton was Nancy's mother. |

Notes for CHARLES H. MCMAHAN:
The Triple Murder. A crime cam to light on Sunday, August 20, 1882, that was characterized by the press and
cititzeens as the most atrocious ever perpetrated in Logan County.
It occurred on a farm two miles south of Chestnut, the victims were Charles McMahan, Robert Matheny and John
Carlock, the last two being hired men of McMahan. The McMahan house stood alone in the field one-half mile from any road ... there were no fences and no garden, the building standing in a clump of weeds. The house itself was a one-story building 18x30 feet. It was never painted and was black with the storms of 30 winters. The interior of this gloomy place was equally forbidding.
The last time the three men were seen alive was on Friday evening when the neighbors noticed them at work
stacking oats ... later a neibhbor, David Long, becam quite perturbed at McMahan's horse being left in the corral unattended and it seemed to be trying to warn someone.
David Long went to the house and noticed quilts were hung at the windows and that some things were out of place.
Frank Lyon and Alfred Ayres afterward joined in the search which lasted, perhaps, two hours when led by a sickening odor from a clump of tall weeds near some corn-pens, they cam upon the body of one of the three slain men. Eventually all were found and lying on their backs with their throats cut from ear to ear. All were blindfolded and gagged with their hands tied behind their backs and their feet hobbled. Their hands had cluthed the weeds beneath them so thightly in their death agony that the weeds had to be cut before they could be removed.
Govenor Cullom offered $200 each for the arrest of the murderer. The Board of Supervisors offered $1000 reward; in
addition the relatives of McMahan offered $1000; residents of Latham and vicinity $500; and Mt. Pulaski $500 ... these (and other) rewards attracted a number of dtectives and many arrests were made during the succeeding months. No evidence sufficient to convict anyone was found. January 1, 1884, the matter was placed by the authorites directly into the hands of the Pinkerton Agency and they arrested J. H. Hall. The jury found Hall guilty and send him to the penitentary for life.
Hall professed his innocence up until he died and the guards of the prison believed that an innocent man suffered
for the crime that someone else committed.
Tobstone. Just inside the main ghate of Laenna Cemetery, one mile west of Chestnut, stand monument(s) erected to
the memory of Charles McMahan, Robert Matheny and Jon Carlock, which in addition to the names, bears this inscription: "McMahan murdered for his money August 18, 1882 by person or persons unknown." McMahan age 46 years and 2 months; Rober Matheny 20 years, 8 months, 10 days; John Carlock 17 years: Chestnut, 100 Years, 1872-1972, Betty Drake Koening Montgomery, Chestnut, Illinois, edited.

His mustering out papers indicates that he was married when he left the Army. He died December 3, 1903 and is buried in the Emerick Cemetery located in the Brushy Mound Township, Macoupin County, Illinois. This is from a biography of his son, Derastus: "at the age of twenty- one he enlisted for three months' service in the Union army. At the expiration of that period he re-enlisted in Company A, Eighty-first Illinois Regiment and served all during the Civil War. He had the misfortune to be wounded twice, being shot in the leg at one time and at another in the lungs. After the war he went to Missouri and worked in the lead mines for ten years. In 1879 he came to Macoupin County, settling on J. P. Cline's farm, which he cultivated for sixteen years, then he removed to another place, where he continued to follow agricultural pursuits until 1902 when he retired. From that time until his death on the 3d of December 1904, he made his home in Carlinville. He was sixty-five years of age at the time of his demise."
