Friedrich Peter Andreas Rasmusen (Fritz) Skau

Saddler FRITZ PETER ANDREAS (alias FREDERIK PEDER ANDREAS) SKAU was born 6th September 1832 in Augustenborg Sogn (Sogn=Parish) isle of Als, Sønderborg Amt (Amt=County), North Slesvig, Danmark, Christened 29/9-32). Skaus parents was the Augustenborg smallowner (husmand)-meaning smal-farmer, RASMUS PETERSEN SKAU (b Augustenborg 1806) & LOUISA FREDERICHE JANSEN (b Augustenborg 1810) (married in Augustenborg Parish Church 17th July 1832).

Central to Frederik SKAU's subsequent emigration from Als was the Danish-German war of 1864 (see Encyclopaedia Britannica). Denmark lost the war to the united forces of Austria and Prussia and the SKAU family came to live under Prussian rule and occupation, eventually the rule of a United Germany under Bismark and Emperor Wilhelm. However it should be added here that this part of Slesvig or as Danes usually say "Sønderjylland" (Southern Jutland) came back to Denmark after a public referendum in 1920. Augustenborg and the isle of Als are today part of the kingdom of Denmark.

Isle of Als with Sønderborg and Augustenborg

SKAU purchased his ticket No 1236F at Viborg city 26th April 1871, giving his occupation as "landmand" meaning farmer or rather farm-labourer. Skau's ticket was a so-called "Free Passage" meaning that he only payed a small fee to the agent including his transport to Hamburg (by train), Queensland Government financed the remaining voyage using the revenue for the sale of Crown-Land. The reason why Skau is signed in as "farm labourer" and not as a Saddler (a highly skilled trade in those days) was that the Queensland agent (agent for "Thayssen Expedition" in Copenhagen, Merchant, Andreas Thomesen in Viborg) had to fulfil a quota from Queensland of a certain amount of "Farm-labourers." As Skau was well aquatinted with all farming work, and as all Danes well educated with six-seven year in Free and Compulsory Primary Schooling, one can't say that Queensland was cheated, in fact they got much more than they asked for. He arrived to Queensland not from North Slesvig but from Vadum Parish in Viborg Amt, near Viborg city in the central north of the Jutland Peninsula. The reason being that he had escaped service in the Prussian Army and by that escaped service on the frontline of the Franco-German war of 1871 by moving north of the border becoming a refugee in Denmark taking where he could get it. Skau departed Hamburg 16th May 1871as passenger 298 on the LAMMERSHAGEN, thre mast sailing ship of Sloman & Co Hamburg, the Captain was JÓRGENSEN and Surgeon Superintendent was Dr CONRADI, and the ship arrived to Rockhampton 7th September 1871.

After landing Skau, like all other Free-Passage immigrants, was given the offer of signing a contract paying back his voyage within a two year period. If he did he would be entitled to select 40 acres of Crown Land which eventually would become his own freehold if he could show a certain amount of improvement within a certain amount of time (2 to 3 years). Wherever he did this, most of them didn't, is not known.

FRITZ SKAU was married in Rockhampton 16th October 1872 to CHRISTINA BENEDICTE SØNDERGAARD at that time giving his (and hers) address as "Archers Cattle Station" which is GRACEMERE STATION near Rockhampton owned by the Norwegian-Scottish Archer family. Skau (and with him legally also his wife, and children at the time) eventually Naturalised in Bowen giving the Oath of allegiance to Queen and Country 3rd August 1876. Note that he gave "Prussia" as his birth place in his naturalisation, this correct in the sense that it was the Prussian occupied zone of Danish North Slesvig/Schleswig, but it is incorrect in the sense that he was born in Denmark, as Als had been part of the Danish kingdom for many centuries and was still under Danish control rule when he was born in 1832.

Albert, Fritz and Maria were the only 3 survivors of his and Christina's 12 Skau children

Most of the information on the family of Fritz and Christina has been handed down through the family.

Friedrich was described as a "government magazine keeper" on his son (Fritz)'s marriage certificate in 1901.

Christina Benedicta Annie Sondergaard

SØNDERGAARD

CHRISTINE BENEDICTE SØNDERGAARD, was born about 1840 in Kolsnap, Nustrup Sogn (Parish), Haderslev Amt (near Skrydstrup & Vojens, North Slesvig) l/r Kolsnap, daughter of farmer (landmand) ALBRECT SØNDERGAARD and wife GERTHA MARIE ULLDAL. Like her later husband, Christine came from the german occupied North Slesvig, they were essentially what we today would term refugees. Note that they may have known one another before migration, meaning that their subsequent meeting in Rockhampton may have been well planned. It was quite common for young immigrants that the men migrated first to blaze the track for his family or as in this case his future wife, only family records can tell if this was the case. Due to the demographical balance in the colonies at the time, unmarried females were issued with a Free Passage completely free of all fees. Christine arrived to Rockhampton (Keppel Bay) Queensland at 29 September 1872 passenger No 237 on board the three masts Sloman & Co owned sailing ship SHAKESPEARE. Christine however had not purchased her ticket in Denmark, she came directly from North Slesvig to Hamburg.

Christine's migration may have been part of a larger family migration as there is at least two other Søndergaard girls migrating to Queensland, one of them almost certainly a close relative.
In March 1872 the Sloman ship HERSCHEL, who departed Hamburg at 2nd December 1871 had a passenger No 334, INGEBORG SØNDERGAARD 27 years old (b.about 1844) and migrating from Heits (Hejels Sogn?) Vejle Amt? Jylland (Danmark) her occupation was recorded as "dienstmädchen" servant girl in German, and she was on Free Passage arriving in Maryborough (Hervey Bay) 7th March 1872. Whether she was a relative I shall not say, Søndergaard (meaning Southern Farm - Sonder= Southern, gaard=farm) is not an uncommon name in Denmark. However the next arrival came with the Sloman ship EUGENIEdeparting Hamburg 16th June 1873 as passenger No 156 JOHANNE SØNDERGAARD, she was 28 years old (b.ca.1845) and like Christine she migrated from Kolsnap, Nustrup Sogn (near Skrydstrup& Vojens, North Slesvig) Haderslev Amt, and she was signed in as "ledig," meaning "unmarried" in German and on a Free Passage. She arrived at Rockhampton (Keppel Bay) 30th October 1873. Johanne was a relative, there can be little doubt about that, as Kolsnap was and still is - a very small village. She was most likely a sister to Christine.

Additional notes :

Catharine Falconer

lived in Smailholm; occupation, cook

Helen Falconer Swan

At the time of the 1891 Census, she was living with her parents and was described as a dressmaker.(I could not locate her on the 1901 census nor could I find a marriage for her.)

John Swan

At the time of the 1891 Census, he was living with his parents and described as an apprentice wool spinner. (I could not find him on the 1901 census.)

Peter Swan

He was described as an agricultural labourer on John Swan's marriage certificate (1861). Sailed from Glasgow on 21 Dec 1862 on "Sir William Eyre" arriving in Bluff on 23 April 1863. They brought Helen, Mary and Janet with them. Alice and her husband and their two children came with them. John, a coachman, remained in Scotland as he had married only a couple of years earlier.
They settled near Makarewa, just north of Invercargill, on land bought for them by their son, Adam, and their son-in-law Walter Eskdale.
On his son, Peters', death certificate he was described as an "estate worker".

Abram (or Abraham) Falconer

occupation - ag lab and road contractor

Agnes Helen Gibson Blackie or Blakie

1861 census for Whitsome shows Agnes' birth (about 1816) parish as Sprounton - She died some time between the '61 census and Abraham's death in 1880 (in Jedburgh).

Thomas Footitt

Occupation - drayman; described as a fencer on his death certificate. He was living at 3 Birds Mews at the time of his marriage when he was described as a porter.

Came to Australia with his wife, Margaret Elizabeth, and three children - Lucy Jane, Annie Elizabeth, and Arthur Thomas on the "Derbyshire" which arrived in Brisbane from London on 11.07.1874. The "Derbyshire" was a ship of the London line, 1165 tons. It left London on April 1 and arrived in Moreton Bay on July 8.

He was living in West End in 1882, according to the Electoral roll for that year; likewise for the 1884/5 roll. In the 1890 roll, he was living at part. por 215, Sth Brisbane. In 1896/7 he was living in Horan St, West End but was in Vulture St in 1897/9 and then in Tillot St in 1900.

Margaret (Martha) Elizabeth(known as Elizabeth) Horan

She was living at 3 Birds Mews at the time of her marriage. (Thomas Footitt was living there too.)

Her date of birth is open to speculation. Her marriage certificate said she was "of full age" in 1860; her death certificate said she married aged 18 in 1860 but her parents' death certificates both give her birth year as about 1848/9. She appears to have been disowned by her parents (or at least by her father) as she was listed on his death certificate but then removed. She was also not mentioned in his will documents BUT she and Thomas Footitt were living at the Horan house in Horan St West End in 1896/7.

Family folklore said that Thomas Horan wanted his daughter to be a nun, perhaps that is why he disowned her?
