Carters Mark Anniversary At Open House

ST. LAWRENCE - Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Carter of St. Lawrence celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary July 14, at open house at their home. Approximately 75 guests called during the afternoon and the honored couple received many gifts.

Mrs. Walter Karge poured and Mrs. Francis Marshall registered the guests. The cake was baked by Mrs. Fred Fanning and decorated by Mrs. Bill Chalcraft. Mrs. Freel Testerman and Mrs. Thelma Choate had charge of serving.

Mrs. Fae Thompson sang a solo and several numbers were sung by the grandchildren.

Eigt of the couple's ten children were present. They were Mrs. Walter Karge (Leone), Wells, Minnesota; Mrs. Louie Lanz (Viola), Chamberlain; Roger Carter, Greensboro, North Carolina; Mrs. Al Young (Dixie) Seattle, Washington; Mrs. Francis Marshall (Dorothy, Mrs. Fred Fanning (Evelyn), Jimmy Carter, Jr., and Dale Carter, all of St. Lawrence.

Those not present were Mrs. E.L. Harris (Lois), Jonesville, North Carolina, and Mrs. Clyde Rediger (Rachel), Spokane, Washington.

Fourteen of the 24 grandchildren attended. Also attending were Mr. Carter's brother and family, Mr. &Mrs. Tom Carter and Edith of Fort Collins, Colorado.

Carter, James and Maude Novella (Key)

Maude Novella Key, daughter of Phoebe and Millard Key of Surry County, North Carolina and James Austin Carter, son of Bessie and James H. Carter of Wilkes County, North Carolina, were married at State Road, North Carolina on July 15, 1917.

At the time of their marriage, James was a member of the 1st Regiment of Virginia, serving his country in WW I. On July 30, 1917, he was honorably discharged at Danville, Virginia. Maude and James continued to live and work around Elkin, North Carolina and Danville, Virginia until it was decided that James would accept an offer to work for James' uncle in South Dakota.

Working for a time in Yale and Huron, James and Maude began working for Earl Swab of St. Lawrence. In May of 1920, during their two years of employment with Mr. Swab, the Carters had their first child.

Throughout the following years, the Carters lived in various locations in St. Lawrence, where all of their eleven children were born. Infant daughter, Virginia, died in 1933. All the other children attended and graduated from St. Lawrence school. They included Leone, Dorothy, Viola, Lois, Evelyn, Jim, Rachel, Roger, Dixie, and Dale.

Having worked for Pete Danielson for a time as a mechanic James decided to strike out on his own to become self-employed. Learning that Highway 14 was to go throught St. Lawrence, James bought the service station on the corner of Main Street and Highway 14, where he had worked for a time for Mr. Blanchard. They owned the service station for 30 years. At one point, they added a cafe to the existing station and managed it with the help of their school-aged children. The cafe was a booming success, yet after either years it beame too much to handle and it was closed. In addition to the continuation of the service station, James later added the Case machinery and Pontiac car sales. He owned and drove the school bus for St. Lawrence School for many years as well.

At the time of his death in May of 1965, James was a member of the Veterans of WW I, Blue Grass Barracks No. 3029 of Miller.

At age 92, (1989) Maude contnues to be actively involved in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Community Church and the Kitchen Klatter Club of St. Lawrence. She continues to enjoy making a variety of knitted and crocheted articles, gardening and baking. She is also kept busy regularly visiting her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who located throughout the United States.

Maude Carter lives at her home in St. Lawrence.

MILLER - Maude Novella Carter, 105, of Miller died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Lawrence Community Church, with Pastors Richard Ransom and Ron Burkhalter officiating. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Maude Key was born Nov. 28, 1896, in Surry County, North Carolina, to Millard Chafin and Phebe Ann (Chipman) Key. Her mother died in 1905 and her father married Sarah Elizabeth
Walters, who raised her.

On July 15, 1917, she married James Austin Aaron Carter in North Carolina. They traveled to South Dakota by train in 1918 and settled in Hand County in 1920, working farm jobs,
owning a Case farm machinery and Pontiac car dealership and an automobile service station. For 30 years, they worked at these jobs, adding a restaurant to the service station
for the last 10 of those years.

She continued to live in her St. Lawrence home until the last year of her life, when she became a resident of Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller.

She was a longtime member of St. Lawrence Community Church and belonged to the St. Lawrence American Legion Auxiliary for many years.

Survivors include six daughters, Leone Liebers of Winter, Wis., Dorothy (Francis) Marshall of St. Lawrence, Lois (E.L.) Harris of Jonesville, N.C., Evelyn (Fred) Fanning of St.
Lawrence, Rachel (Clyde) Rediger of Mesa, Ariz., and Dixie (Al) Young of Edmonds, Wash.; three sons, James of Rapid City, Roger (Aloa) of Greensboro, N.C., and Dale (Suzanne) of Montrose, Colo.; and a total of 250 descendents.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her stepmother; two daughters, Viola Lanz Webber and Virginia Carter; three sisters, Eva Shorter, Carrie Caudle and Ettie
Jane Key; two brothers, Carl and Thomas Key; a stepsister, Bertie Windsor; and four stepbrothers, Autie, Marvin, Clyde and Millard Walters.
