Miss Lilly McPhail's school closes this afternoon. Dr. J.B. Taylor is visiting at the home of his daughter at Knapp, Wisconsin. R. H. Jones and family, of Vayland, visited Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O.D. Thompson. Miss Jessie Kintigh gave her pupils a treat Friday afternoon in the form of ice cream and cake. On account of the rainy weather and muddy roads the dance was postponed until Tuesday night, May 27. Don't forget date. Miss Bertha Sorensen has gone on an extended visit to Lake Andes and other points in the southeastern part of the state. Miss Frances King's school closed last Friday. On Saturday she and Miss Lillie McPhail gave their pupils a picnic in McMurtry's gulch. Friday afternoon the Misses Ice and Van Brunt went out to Flint's place with their pupils to enjoy a picnic, it being the last day of school. Willie Shephard arrived home on Monday's evening passenger from Ree Heights, after working for Prof. G. W. Courts on the farm for about two months. Mrs. C.H. Rock and children departed Wednesday morning for Fairview, Montana, to reside. Their friends wish them a safe and pleasant journey and properity in their new home. Prof. G. W. Courts, who finished a term of school here last Friday, went up to Aberdeen on business that evening. He returned to his home near Ree Heights Sunday forenoon. L. A. Blake reports that M. D. Harris is doing lots of business running a restaurant and C. H. Rock has several contracts ahead putting up buildings, assisted by a force of about half a dozen men. The high school pupils and those who assisted in the class play and the Misses Ice, Van Brunt and Kintigh enjoyed a wienie and marshmallow roast out at VanZee's place last Friday night. Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Fitzgerald and little daughter departed for Rapid City Monday night to attend the Grand Lodge meeting of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. They are delegates from the local lodge. Mrs. M. O. Thompson accompanied them. Hugh Jaynes, of Pierre, who drove to Miller in his car with his family Sunday, bought a car load of cattle from B. F. Magness. Hugh was a former resideent of Miller and for about 17 years has been engaged in the butcher's business at the capital. A gentle rain began falling in this section Sunday afternoon and continued throughout the night well toward early Monday morning and again in the afternoon and night, followed by more rain Tuesday. Estimates run from 3 to 5 inches of rainfall for this region. The ground is certainly soaked up to a greath depth. {continued next column] |

======================== Locals and Personals continued ======================== A daughter was born Wednesday to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stafford, of Burdette township. Lea McCormack, Opal Skinner, Mabel Kramer and Edna Flint are in Miller taking the 8th grade examination. M. C. Blackmer is enjoying a visit from his nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Jordan, of Putnam, Conn. L. A. Blake and family departed for Fairview, Montana, to take up their residence, on Wednesday morning's passenger. Prof. A. H. Heiby arrived from Canistota Saturday forenoon and, we understand, has been engaged as principal for the coming term. Hurrah for St. Lawrence school district! Mabel Kramer and Edna Flint won the gold and silver medals in the spelling contest in Miller Wednesday. Will Wilson paid out about $120 last Saturday for cream received that day. That's a pretty good record for one day, and shows that there are quite a number of farmers who have struck the key-note of financial success. The Misses Bertha and Frances King departed this morning for northern Illinois to visit for a number of days, after which they will go to Washington, D.C. to visit relations. Their parents will meet them in Washington and after a few days visit in that city, all will proceed to Boston and on June 14 will set sail for Europe, to be gone about three months. |

CRAZED FARMER RUNS AMUCK, THEN TURNS WEAPON ON SELF ---------- White Owl Homesteader Shoots Relative Three Times, Then Suicides. White Owl, SD May 17--Supposed to be temporarily insane from financial troubles, Siegel Thompson, residing on Sulphur creek, about 15 miles northeast of here, shot his brother-in-law, Victor Bishop, and then turned the weapon on himself. Thompson died in a few minutes, but Bishop is recovering from his wounds. Bishop was working in a field, in company with two children and a step-son, when Thompson rode up and made the attack without warning. He fired six shots, three of them taking effect, one in the right shoulder, one in the right arm and the third shot entering the left hip. Thompson then started to reload his gun, with the intention of continuing the fusillade, but while he was doing this, Bishop made his escape over the creek bank. After getting his gun reloaded, Thompson made an extended search for his intended victim, but the latter was hiding in the bushes and escaped observation. After giving up the effort to find Bishop, Thompson rode back to his own home, tied his horse in one stall of the barn, entered the other stall and fired two shots into his own body. The first shot struck a rib and glanced, but the second bullet penetrated his heart. Thompson leaves a wife and five children. The remains will be taken to his former home at Whitewood, SD for burial. ============= |
======================== KILLED BY SHOCK OF ELECTRIC LIGHT BULB ---------------------- Mitchell, SD May 17. - Taking hold of an electric light bulb with her wet hand
caused Miss Margaret Schabot to recieve an electric shock which caused her
instant death. Miss Schabot, who was a cook in the Oliver Hotel at Wessington
Springs, went into the kitchen to prepare supper for some traveling men who,
hearing a fall, hurried into the kitchen to find the woman dead. A physician
stated that owing to her fleshiness and having a weak heart, the shock of
electricity was sufficient to cause her death. ======================== |
TRIPP COUNTY TOUGH IS FATALLY WOUNDED IN A SALOON FIGHT ---------- R.E. Bartlett, of Wewela Fires Three Bullets Into Body of Wess Good. -------------- Wewela, SD, May 19. - In a shooting affray which occurred in the little inland
town of Wewela, Tripp county, Wess Good, a notorious character, received three
bullet wounds, one of which may prove fatal. R. E. Bartlett, a local
saloon man, did the shooting. Local sympathy is entirely with Bartlett in the incident, and it is claimed that he will have no trouble in making a showing of self defense. Good and a brother made an attack on Bartlett, who gave them repeated warnings before opening fire. Bartlett is an expert gunman and states that he merely tried to stop his opponent by wounding him, but one of the shots went slightly astray and probably struck a vital part. The town and community is all wrought up over the shooting, which is the first fatal brawl that has occurred in the history of this town. Wewela is one of the government townsites established at the time of the Tripp county opening and is 20 miles from the nearest railroad point. Bartlett, who did the shooting, homesteaded a quarter section near here and later embarked in the saloon business. =============== KILLING AT BRUCE Aberdeen, SD May 19 - Jack Harris, aged 40 years, was shot and killed last
Thursday at Bruce, Brookings county, by Earl Doop, 18 years of age. ================ |

MILLTOWN - Wesley Hayes, aged 17, was accidentally shot in the left arm, and before
medical aid could be given him the shock and loss of blood caused his death.
The young man had gone for a load of hay and took a shotgun with him.
Taking the gun from the hayrack it was accidentally discharged, the load striking
him in the left arm near the shoulder. ST. LAWRENCE - Traveling six miles more each day than required by his rules in order to accommodate a family on his route, is the record of Col. R. T. Sedam, rural free mail carrier north from St. Lawrence. He has done this in all kinds of weather for some years. HURON - The body of a man who deliberately stepped in front of a moving train in the yards of the Chicago & Northwestern railway has been identified as that of John Carston, of Wessington, SD. A coroner's jury returned a verdict of suicide. LEAD - Matt Mattson, one of the old time miners of this city, died at his home here, aged 51, from a lingering attack of miners' consumption. He had resided here for 23 years and was employed by the Homestake during that period. He leaves a wife and 12 children. MILLER - Attorney J. H. Cole, as resident agent here, has just paid to the state $416.64 as inheritance tax from the estate of the late Dr. H. H. Viersen, of Pella, IA who owned land here. ============ BODIES FOUND IN CELLAR PHASE OF INCEST CASE PIERRE, SD May 17 - A coroner's jury was called to investigate the finding of the
bodies of two male infants buried in the cellar of the house occupied by R. C.
EEvans, who yesterday entered a plea of guilty to criminal relations with his
17-year-old stepdaughter, after an investigation in which the girl and her mother
were the chief witnesses. EVANS GETS 16 YEARS. PIERRE, SD May 17. - R. C. Evans, who entered a plea of guilty to criminal
relations with his stepdaughter, Mildred, was today sentenced to a term of 16 years
in the penitentiary. ============== |
