~ Valedictorian ~
Lorraine Blanchard
"Her power of attainment is born in the strength of her ideals."
In a close race with several outstanding students, Lorraine Blanchard won the distinction of being valedictorian of the class of 1944. After transferring to the Miller High School during her junior year, she maiantained the same high standard she had previously attained at St. Lawrence.
Besides ranking high scholastically, Lorraine has participated in a well-rounded program of extra-curricular activities.  She has taken a keen interest in music, playing in the band, pep band, and tournament band all four years, and singing two years each in girls' trio and girls' glee club, of which latter, she was president her senior year.
She won superior ratings for brass sextet in two National Regional Music Contests, a superior rating for baritone solo in one, and first place for girls' trio in the state contest. Active in dramatics, she portrayed a role in the junior play.  Loraine has been a member of the annual staff the last two years and served as editor of the 1944 Rustler.  As a senior, she was elected vice-president of her class.
Lorraine hopes to attend the University of South Dakota next year.
~ Salutatorian ~
Carl Lorentson
"We like him not only for what he does -- but because he is."
Carl Lorentson well deserves the honor of being 1944 salutatorian, not only because of his excellent scholastic record, but also for his contributions as a citizen of Miller High School.
Carl has participated in many activities, enacting a major role in the junior play, appearing in the homecoming pageant all four years, and serving on the annual staff two years.  As freshman and sophomore he was class president and vice-president respectively.  His junior and senior years he was a member of the Student Council, serving first as vice-president, then as president.
His ability in music has been shown by his frequent appearance as a piano soloist, by his winning a third place in the National Music Contest, and by his participation in mixed chorus and swing band.
He has also been outstanding in athletics, earning three letters each in football, basketball, and track, and holding membership three years in the Athletic Honor Society and the "M" Club, of which he was president his senior yea.
The past two years he has been a member of the National Honor Society and National Thespians.
It is Carl's ambition to attend the University of Wisconsin and become an athletic coach and director of physical education.
