BAIRD, aged 4 years, 7 months and 2 days. Little Willie was a child of great promise, having in his short life, although a child, endeared himself to many hearts. How well we would like to have kept him, but Jesus called him to join his angel brother and sister in that sun bright clime where pain and death are never more, death with a cold relentless hand, looped in and thinned our happy hand.

Adieu, sweet child thou art gone from earth

Thy body mouldering lies,

God’s given the pure immortal birth

In heaven beyond the skies

.

Thy beautiful face with love so bright

Lies buried neath the sod,

Immortal beauty dims thy sight,

Thy Spirit’s flown to God.

BOYD, Child of John Boyd – 2nd Obit

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, November 18 1879

A very sad and distressing accident occurred at the residence of Mr. John B. Boyd, near Sharon, last Friday afternoon. Mr. Boyd had left his wife and two small children, two and six years old, at home while he came to this place to transact some business. Mrs. Boyd had occasion to leave the children alone for a few moments, while she attended to some work outside of house. The room in which the children were playing contains an old fashioned wood fireplace, so commonly used in country residences. Mrs. Boyd hearing the youngest child screaming hurried as only a mother can to the rescue, but too late; the poor little thing had crawled too near the fire, catching its clothing, from which it died in a few hours. The family have the sympathy of the entire community. – Coldwell Press

BRACY, Miss Littie Bracy

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, November 25 1879

OBITUARY – DIED of Consumption, Miss Littie Bracy, daughter of G.W. and E.S. Bracy, aged 28 years.

She united with the Christian Church in 1865 and remained a consistent member until her death, which occurred October 27 1879. Her sickness, though of long duration, was borne with Christian fortitude. He payer through all her illness was, that her affliction might not be greater than she could bear patiently, and had she her life to live over again she would spend half her time in prayer. She would say: “ Why am I afflicted so, when the lord loveth whom  he chasteneth?” then would exclaim with the Apostle “For our light afflictions, which as but for a moment, work out for us a far more exceeding and eternal light of glory.” She often spoke of that bright mansion which her heavenly Father had in reservation for her, and would say, “O! won’t it be glorious to go from this bed of affliction?” and when asked if she thought she was going there, she said she “not only thought but knew that Jesus would lead her through the dark valley and the shadow of death, and her sisters welcome her on the other shore.”

Thy friends with songs shall greet thee,

 When thou shalt thither come;

Thy lost ones there shall meet thee,

 In their eternal home.

A short time before her death she composed the following verses:

.

Our lives are rivers gliding free,

To that unfathomed , boundless sea –

The silent graves.

.

Thirther all earthly pomp and boast

Roll, to be swallowed up and lost,

 In one dark wave.

.

Her soul to him who gave it roam,

God led it to its long repose –

Its glorious rest.

.

And though the dear one’s sun has set,

Its light shall linger round as yet,

 Bright, raidiant, blest

Earth ‘tis time hath friends that bless me with

Spirit of Democracy, April 15 1879, Page 2 Column 3

(Belmont Chronicle, 10th inst.)

A lamentable accident occurred on Monday night of last week to the wife of Mr. Thomas Cordell, of York Township. It seems that Mrs. Cordell’s time was occupied in feeding a little pig, about 10 o’clock, and to make the fire more brilliant she threw a small piece of bark on the grate, seating herself on the hearth so as to have the benefit of the light. While sitting there the bark burned in two, and the piece projecting over the grate fell upon her clothing. She immediately extinguished it, as she thought, and took a seat upon a chair-

She dozed into a sleep shortly, and soon after awakened to find her dress enveloped in flames. Excitedly ash ran out of the door and ran around the house several times. In the meantime a young girl 14 years old threw a bucket of water upon the unfortunate lady, but of no avail. By this time all the clothing had been burned from her body, and she again entered the house. At this time her husband and son arrived, who did all in their power to relieve her sufferings. They found that the body was burned to a crisp from the knees to the chin. With all the assistance offered nothing seemed to relieve her, and on Tuesday morning following she expired.

She leaves a husband, a family of children- two of whom are invalids- and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. Her remains were interred on Thursday in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

DYE, Mrs. Mary Dye

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, July 29 1879

Obituary - Mrs. Mary E., wife of Francis M. Dye, residing 1 ½ miles east of Antioch, died July 5 1879.

She was a member of the M. E. Church at Greenbrier, was about 26 years old; was sick about ten hours, during which time her sufferings were great. For a short time before her death she was unconscious, but the last words spoken by her while in a conscious state was a prayer to God. She was a woman known only to be loved, always having been a praying and Bible reading character. She lived and died just as such persons do.

She leaves a husband and one child with many other near and dear friends to mourn her loss.

Her remains were followed to the place of interment by a large concourse of people. May the Lord take care of the husband and child.- J.E.G.

EATON, MISS Elma Eaton

Spirit of Democracy, April 1 1879, Page 2 Column 7

DIED- March 10 1879, at the residence of her father in Jerusalem, Ohio, Miss Elma Eaton, aged 29 years 5 months and 29 days.

She was born in Graysville where she lived until she had grown to womanhood. She has resided in Jeresalem for the past ten or twelve years, and had formed many attachments.

She had been suffering with disease of the lungs for some months, which she vainly tried to over come. Some time before her death she gave evidence of her acceptance of God and a hope of immortality. Though naturally arose to death, she became so well satisfied about it without a fear or shudder. Well might it be said or her:

“O death where is thy sting, O grave where is thy victory?”

She leaves an aged father and mother and many friends to mourn her loss, friends who deeply sympathize with the bereaved relatives in the day of their affliction.

  Thou……...low and silent,

Thy heart is cold and still

  Thine eyes are shut forever

And Death has had his will.              A.W.G.

ELLISON, Hugh Ellison

Spirit of Democracy, March 4, 1879, Page 3 Column 4

Hugh Ellison, residing on Big Run, Washington County, died last week, rather suddenly. After his burial, his wife, who had some fear that people would suspect her of assisting to get the old man out of the world (they having been divorced, but still living under the same roof of a double- house) had him taken up. It was found that his lungs were completely ossified. In the examination, his wife testified that he was a hard drinker; when he could not get whisky he drank camphor, and when that was exhausted he would take turpentine, often drinking as much as a pint of the latter article in a day. The physicians who examined him came to the conclusion that death resulted from the drinking of turpentine.-Noble Co. Republican

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, July 15 1879

(from letters to the editor)-Suicide of Joel R. Evans – Verdict of the Coroner’s Jury-Ozark, July 10, 1879

We attempt to chronicle a sad event. Joel R. Evans, an old resident of Sunsbury, twp., residing near Ozark, hung himself this morning. The circumstances are as follows; He had been seriously complaining for some three weeks during which time he was confined to the house. He had been in the habit of lying on a lounge in the room, where his wife and daughter slept. His wife on awaking this morning missed him, arose and searched the house without finding him, then awoke the daughter and instituting a search, found him hanging in the stable. Esq. T. J. Griffith proceeded to impanel a jury as follow, viz: A. Arnold, B.R. Driggs, Aaron Pugh, Thos. Dickle, Wm Morris and Matthew Moore who, after hearing the testimony in the case, rendered a verdict that he had committed suicide by hanging. It is generally believed that financial embarrassment had so weighted upon his mind as to result in this his untimely end. – John Jeffers

He had arrived from Fredrick, MD, at eleven o’clock, having been discharged a few days since from the Asylum of that city, the doctors and friends believing it was useless to keep him longer in confinement. In the afternoon while standing behind the counter he took from the show-case a Smith & Wesson revolver, thirty-two caliber, and pressing the muzzle against his breast, discharged the weapon.  OBITUARY – DIED of congestion of the stomach, August 3d, 1879, after a suffering of three months, Melissa Maud, a little daughter of O and R.B. Gillespie, aged 1 year, six months and 22 days.

Death stole in our happy little band and took from us one of our most lovely charms on earth. Maud was a lovely little girl, well beloved by her Pa and Ma, and was a favorite child among many relatives and friends. We can never forget the dear little ones kisses she offered until almost the last expiring breath. Those bright blue eyes, which are now closed in death, will long be remembered by many persons, but she has gone home at her Savior’s call, for the Lord hath said suffer those dear little ones to come unto me and forbid them not.

.

Darling Maud how we miss thee,

Miss that little form of thine,

But in heaven we hope to meet thee,

With the angels there to shine.

OBITUARY – DIED September 10, 1879, Henrietta V., wife of D. W. Goddard, in the 31st year of her age, after a painful illness of 11 months.

She leaves a husband and one child and a number of friends to mourn her loss; but their loss is her eternal gain.

She joined the M.E. Church at the age of 14 years, and since then has been a consistent member. May her husband and child follow her in the paths of duty, so that when death may come they will be ready to go and meet her with many loved ones gone before.

The shining ones at Heaven’s gate

The coming of a spirit wait;

That spirit freed from earth and woe

Unfolds her new-born wings, and lot

Doth brighter, fairer, lovelier grow as she doth rise

And as she nears the heavenly gate

The shining ones that there await,

Behold her coming through the skies,

And cry with angel melody:

“She comes! She comes! At last she’s free!”

Then O! The holy octant,

The peace of those happy spirits fair,

The joy of that sweet meeting here.

.

A mourning ones on earth bends o’er

A new made grave; his grief is sore,

For he hath heard the parting word

Of one who was his nearest friend.

Find Father, some sweet comfort send,

Thou only knowest how to cheer

The anguish of that parting here

.

Farewell, Dear friends, farewell;

A few short years at most,

If faithful to your Master’s will,

We’ll join the heavenly host. – L.M.

HENTHORN, Richard Henthorn

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, August 26 1879

We were informed last week of the particulars of a fearful tragedy enacted in Wirt County, West. Va., between James Shook Jr., and Richard Henthorn , former resident of Jackson Township, this county.

Shook and another man were engaged in getting out railroad ties, when Henthorn approached them, with a stone in his had, swearing that he intended to kill Shook. Shook stood on the defensive until Henthorn came close to him when he struck with his axe, cutting a terrible gash in Henthorn’s forehead; a second blow almost severed an arm, a third took effect on his other arm, a fourth cut through several ribs in his right side and a fifth performed the same duty in his left side. After stretching Richard on the field of combat, Shook left to hunt an officer to have him arrested, but while absent Henthorn was taken to a house and a physician sent for, who pronounced his injuries fatal.

The origin of the difficulty was the arrest, conviction and sentence of Henthorn to the penitentiary from this county in 1873, for shooting at James Shook, Sr. with intent to kill.

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, December 2 1879

A GUERNEY COUNTY HORROR – How a little daughter of William Hosick was cremated alive – Cambridge- On November 24, A horrible accident befell a little daughter, aged between four and five years, of William Hosick, a farmer residing in Jackson Township, this county, that caused her death. She, with another younger child, was left in the house while the mother went to the barn to milk a cow. While performing this labor, Mrs. Hosick heard the child screaming, but supposed it arose from the fact that she could not open the door to follow her and paid little attention to it.

After finishing  she returned to the house and upon opening the door discovered the child standing in a middle doorway with little had uplifted, but devoid of clothing, and the body so badly burned that the [?] lines could be seen and the arms cracked open. The eyes were totally obliterated. Yet with standing all this, the poor sufferer lived, being conscious for several hours before the angel of death called he spirit. The interior of the house evidenced her frantic efforts to escape the fate in store, pieces of her garments being found scattered throughout several rooms, but unable to open the doors, she was compelled to succumb to the devouring element. It is not known how her clothes caught, but two large fires were burning in open fire places, and, it is supposed, in passing, one her calico apron (all the rest of he clothes being heavy flannel, first ignited, and being so young she was unable to subdue the flames, and soon became enveloped by them.

Church. He was also a leader in the Sabbath School where he had been a very attentive member from his youth up.

He was a devoted Christian, and adhered strictly to the principles of his religion. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and leaves a large circle of warm friends and relative to mourn his loss. For some time past consumption had been preying on his system, until the morning of his death, when he replied that he felt content and willing to go, and meet his reward.

Then came the appointed angel from afar and summoned him away from this cold and sinful world of ours, and as we hope to that better land which is promised to all those who seek to enter therein, which is free from pain, sorrow and death.

He departed from our midst in the morning of his life, like a blooming flower that is plucked from its parent stem beneath the shining sun.

Seeing that these frail bodys  [sic] of ours at any period of life may be called unto death, let us ever strive to be ready to meet our friend who has, just gone before us. And trusting that our loss is his eternal gain, we console ourselves with the hope of meeting him beyond the dark river of death, for we have the promise of Him who once said, “Come unto me all ye that are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.”

.

“When friends and kindred droop and die,

And when helpers are withdrawn,

While sorrow, with a weeping eye,

Count up our comforts gone.

Our Helper and our friend

And guide us in this dangerous road,

Till all our trials end” – Levi Ressegger

MCCONNELL, Josiah B. McConnell

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, June 10 1879

OBITUARY - Josiah B. McConnell was born near Graysville, Monroe County, Ohio, August 7, 1853, and died near Ravenswood, Jackson County, W Va., May 30, 1879.  He was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and leaves in his death a brilliant evidence that he is now enjoying the heir-ship of eternal glory.

Josiah was known to be always strictly moral and temperate in all his habits. Having pious parents he ever revered their God; and in the winter of 1876, he was happily converted to Christ, there after being an active, earnest worker for the Master.

He died in glorious triumph, full of faith and rejoicing in the love of Christ, and in his power to save.

He expressed in his last words the desire that those he left behind might live so as to meet him in heaven – may God help us so to do.

Hard it seems to part with this dear friend, though it is but for a time, for we know we have but to follow in his footsteps, that when the Angel, Death call, to pass through the portals into the celestial city, and again clasp glad hands with him around whose name cling so many dearly cherished memories.

.

Gone to dwell with Christ forever,

“Just beyond the rolling river,

In the happy land so fair,”

Rests he, ever now from care.

MCFARLAND, David Albert

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, May 27 1879

OBITUARY- DIED – May 1, 1879; of brain fever.

David Albert, son of G.W. and Elizabeth McFarland, aged 8 months and 10 days.

These parents have been bereft of one of their dear little one and whose time here upon earth was fleeting. In him many fondly hopes were centered; but death has withered all. Silently, amid many tears and suppressed sorrow, but with humble submission to the will of God, have these fond parents tenderly folded away this precious treasure in the quiet grave, believing that the grave will yield it up again: that they shall see their loved one and meet never more. Yet they mourn and feel sad when they think how beautiful it was when lying in its little cradle, or how innocent and lamb like when caressing it in their arms. But the Lord had need of these dear tokens of the earth, and he has taken this flower to transplant it above in the fields of light. Many as are the shadows that flit across the horizon of earthly happiness, there does shine a star, there does speak a still small voice to the mourner’s heart to light the gloom and parents comfort.

.

Thou art gone to the grave- but we will not deplore thee;

Tho’ sorrow and darkness encompass the tomb,

The Savior has passed through portals before thee,

And the lamp of his love is thy guide thro’ the gloom,

.

Thou art gone to the grave- we no longer behold thee,

Nor tread the rough path of the world by thy side,

But the wide arms of mercy are spread to enfold thee,

And sinners may hope since the sinless has died.

.

Thou art gone to the grave- but ‘twere wrong to deplore thee

When God was thy ransom, thy guardian, thy guild,

He gave thee and take thee, and soon will restore thee,

Where death hath no sting, since the Savior has died.

Henry Sawyers.

MORGAN, E.G. Morgan -2nd Obit

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, November 4 1879

The death of any such a man as Mr. E.G. Morgan, of Bellaire, is a great loss to any community. He was a wide-awake, energetic and public spirit citizen, and at a crisis in the history of the Bellaire and Southwestern narrow gauge railroad came to its rescue and gave it a most important and successful impetus. We feel that his death is to some extent a loss to the public interests of this whole region of country. – Wheeling Intelligencer, 30th.

MORGAN, E.G. Morgan

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, November 4 1879

Sudden Death of E.G. Morgan, of Bellaire – Social and business circles were startled yesterday by the announcement that E. G. Morgan, one of our most prominent, and certainly the most enterprising citizen of Bellaire, was dead. A driver and another workman belonging to his coal works, had occasion to consult him, and on entering his office on Noble Street, about 9 o’clock A. M., found him sitting in the office chair, dead. Dr. Kurz was called, and an examination revealed the fact that Mr. Morgan had died of heart disease.

The news of his sudden demise spread like wild fire, and it was the general subject of discussion throughout the city. Every one deplores the[?] of a citizen who contributed so much to the material advancement of our city.      Mr. Morgan was born at St. Clairsville, and at his death was in his 57th year. He for a time was in the drug business at St. Clairsville; then he entered the dry goods trade, and read law under Judge Cowan, but never pracussed at the bar. He came to Bellaire, and with several other gentlemen, went into the whole-sale grocery business. He at once identified himself with the interests of our city, and was an active leader in the movement for our public school buildings. Afterwards he was prominently identified with the water and gas works, the street railway line and other public as well as individual enterprises. He was also President for a year of the Southwestern Railway, and a large stockholder in the Goblet Works. A singular, though complimentary, fact is that he never associated himself with any enterprise but that he reached the top, having in almost every instance succeeded  to the Presidency of the associations to which he lent his name and influence. He was a remarkable man, and stands foremost in the heart of the people who regard the material progress of our town. About a year ago his wife died suddenly from the same disease.

We scarcely know how to take leave of so worthy citizen. He certainly held his hand on the pulse of our people, and when their interest were paramount he never hesitated to throw his money and experience in the scale that weighed more than a lavish return. He was a man that all respected. He was a just man. Can we say more?

His remains will be interred in Rosewood Cemetery tomorrow. He leaves three children, one of whom is Mrs. Jacob Berger, of Wheeling Island. – Register, 29th

MOSER, Albert Moser

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, January 20 1880

DIED – Of Typhoid fever, at his home in Ohio Township, Dec 29 1879, Albert Moser, son of Christian Moser, aged 20 year and 14 days. He was taken to his final resting place on the last day of the old year. Notwithstanding the very rainy and muddy weather there were quite a large concourse of friends and relative present. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Schimmel and was such as to touch the hardest hearts. His twxt was from the 103d Psalm: “As for man, his days are as grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.- For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone, and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children.”

The deceased was a member of the German Lutheran Church at Mt. Zion, and will be much missed in the Chruch services as well as in the circle of many young friends. He was the leader of a choir of singers here and also performed upon the organ at Church.

He leaves a father and loving brothers and sisters to mourn his premature death.- O.

PASCAL, Mr. Pascal

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, July 1 1879

The Wheeling Resister publisher an account of the drowning of a young man named Pascal, in the Ohio River, near Bellaire, together with this marvelous statement: “Pascal’s mother lives at Bellaire, and on the afternoon of his death she was lying asleep. About the time he was struggling in the water, she sprang up, seemingly half awake, and declared that her son was dead. All persuasions to lie down again were vain, and she threw a shawl over her head and started up the street directly for the scene of the accident, arriving while the by-standers were hesitating about the best manner of informing her of her bereavement. The story reads like a marvelous fable, but it was told to us by reliable persons, who were present when she arrived at the river bank.” Verily, there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in our philosophy, or science, or even our theology.

Fare thee well, thou lovely one,

 Lovely still but dear no more;

Once his soul of truth is gone,

 Love’s sweet life is o’er.

.

Thy words, whate’er their flattering spell,

 Could scarce have thus deceived;

But eyes that acted truth so well

We’re sure to be believed.

.

Come, chase that starting tear away

Ere mine to meet it springs,

To night, at least be gay,

Whatever tomorrow brings.

.

To gild our dark’ning life of Heaven,

But one bright hour allow;

Oh! Think that one bright hour is given

In all it’s splendor now.

.

Let’s live it out, then sink in night,

Like waves that from the shore

One minute a veil, are touched with light,

Then lost forever more - F.L. W.

SMITH, Minnie Smith

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, June 24 1879

Died – Of diphtheria June 17th 1879, the oldest daughter of Lewis and Mary Smith, aged 3 years, 7 months and 7 days.  She was a lovely little girl filling her home with much joy and happiness, but there is a void never to be filled, one that reaches beyond the parental roof, a vacant chair; one that is missed around the family hearth stone. Alas, she has answered to the call of her savior, “suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of Heaven.

.

Dearest Minnie, how we miss thee,

Miss thy little prattling tongue,

Miss thee whom the morning cometh,

And the evening shade is gone.

.

Dearest Minnie, thou wast lovely,

Gentle as the summer breeze,

Pleasant as the air of evening,

When it floats among the trees

.

Peaceful be thy silent slumber,

Peaceful in the grave so low,

Thou no more wilt join our number,

Thou no more our songs shalt know

.

Dearest Minnie, thou liest low and silent,

Thy heart is cold and still,

Thine eyes are shut forever,

And death has had his will. – J.W. Diehl

TREMBLY, David Trembly

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, October 7 1879

(From the Cincinnati Enquirer)- The Monroe County Murder

Belmont, September 29 – Two men named King and Conley have been arrested for the murder of David Trembly, as reported in your paper, Wednesday. They were having a preliminary hearing at Beallsville on Saturday night, but owing to a mob of four to five hundred wishing to take them out of the hands of the law the officials were forced to postpone the hearing and place the accused under a strong guard, and further demonstrations of the mob it was decided to move the accused to Woodsfield to the County jail. They were moved in the night. It is rumored that they are followed by some sixty or seventy of the mob.

That correspondent started out to tell a whole lot of lies and succeeded admirably. The prisoners waived an examination and were ordered to jail. There was no mob, the prisoners were brought here in broad daylight, the writer of this in company with the Prosecutor coming with them and they were not followed by 60 or 70 persons, or by any other number. The people of Monroe County are law-abiding, there are no lynching mobs within her borders but if there were they would be justified in using their ropes on such fools as the author of the above whenever an opportunity was presented.

TREMBLY, David Trembly- 2nd Obit

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, October 28, 1879

Peter King, Jr., confined in jail charged with the murder of DAVID TREMBLY, of Sunsbury Township, on Tuesday, the 23d day of September, made a confession the night of Wednesday, the 23d, in which he stated the following particulars:

He stated that he had determined a month before the day on which TREMBLE was murdered that he would kill him. That a short time before he met TREMBLY on the hill that leads to Sunfish creek near Harry Howells’ , determined to shoot him there, and after thinking a few moments concluded that he would not do it then.

On Monday, the 22d of September, be again obtained consent of his mind to shoot TREMBLY, but decided a second time to defer that matter because TREMBLY happened to be on the road near his grandfathers.

His statements relating to his actions on September 23d, are that he sat on the bank to the right of the road, between the forks of the road near SEALS’ and the coal bank where the deed was done, until he saw TREMBLY driving down the road. He then went down the bank to the road and walked in the same direction TREMBLY was traveling. He says he spoke to TREMBLY when he passed him, but that TREMBLY made no reply. He followed behind the wagon until it reached the coal bank, when he drew his revolver and fired at a distance of about twenty-five feet, the ball taking effect in TREMBLY’S head; as heretofore published in Tue Spirit.

He further says that when the revolver cracked TREMBLY fell over and the horses stopped. He then climbed into the wagon, took the sack containing the silver, between $25 and $26 from the box fastened to the side of the wagon bed, and his pocket book and papers from his inside pocket.

After rifling the body KING climbed the bank and fence at the lower side of the coal bank and went up the hill through the bushes and across an open field, corn field and piece of woods to a line fence, at the top of the hill toward Sunfish creek from his grandfathers, where he hid the pocket book and papers under two pieces of an old stump.

After obtaining this information Ex-Sheriff Little and Deputy Sheriff Read, on Thursday morning last, went over to the place indicated by KING, and after securing their team, walked straight to the stump, overturned the pieces, and there lying upon the ground were the pocket book and papers of David Trembly, the murdered man, which are now in the possession of the Prosecuting Attorney.

When asked by Ex-Sheriff Little if be was not troubled in his mind about the murder, KING replied, “No, I don’t care a damn about it.”

King insists that he had no assistance in his work of murder and robbery, and that no one, except himself, knows anything about it. That he is a hardened villain, although only 22 years of age, there can be no doubt, but there is other evidence on the subject, not yet made public, that will lead to the punishment of all concerned.

What promised at the onset to prove a troublesome matter is gradually being unraveled, and ere long the whole story will be known, together with all its devilish plotting, for “Murder will out”

BREAKING THROUGH ICE And Perishes in the Water.

On Thursday evening, a boy about 10 years of age, names Grant Hickney who lived with his widowed mother in a dilapidated home near Senecaville went out as was his turn to look at his muskrat traps along Seneca Creek. The famile [sic] were ill off in the goods of this world and the brave little fellow devoted himself by every means in his power to help his mother along. His trapping brought in means to buy her many a little comfort which came blessed with the labors of a willing, though weak child. On this occasion his usual round through the bluster of the day had been made and he was returning home. And in crossing the creek whilst near the center of it, the ice gave away and he was plunged to the bottom. He struggled with the strength of a man and the desperation given by his danger, but the treacherous ice all about him gave away as he grasped it. His cries brought Mansel Millibone down upon one side of the creek and John Riggs upon the other. A rail was got out to the boy, but by this time he was unable from cold and exhaustion to sustain him self upon it. Each effort grew weaker until at last he sank, dead. This was about 5 o’clock in the evening. His body was not recovered until nearly 8 o’clock that night. He was a little hero. His struggle with fate in life, and fate in death, shows the pluck of brave manhood so unusual in one of his years.
