Blowers, Hannah Blowers nee Bracy (obit #2)

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated December 13, 1888

Departed this life at her home in Adams Tp., Monroe County, O., Hannah J. Blowers, aged 45 years. The deceased was born in the same County and State in which she died about the year 1843, where she resided with her parents, John and Clarissa Bracy, until she abandoned her home to be united in marriage to C. M. Blowers, who has ever since lived in the above-named vicinity.

In the course of time she won the esteem of a great many friends, who no doubt will miss her as a friend and neighbor. She said before she died that she wanted to stay longer. As the ties of nature are so impressed upon us it would be hard indeed to part from dear children and friends. But she had to yield to that dreaded disease, Consumption, which takes many of our loved ones away. When in  early years, she united with the Church of Christ, at Mt. Zion. But by many hindrances in life was not permitted to attend the duties that her Lord and Master assigned her.

She leaves five children to mourn her departure, four in this County and one in the West; and five who have gone to the grave before her. Remains were taken with tender hands and placed in the Asbury Chapel Cemetery to await the final resurrection.

In peace she rests beneath the ground,

          Soft slumbering in her lowely bed;

          Until the starting trumpet sound,

Shall burst the tomb and wake the dead.

                                                          M.J.W.

Forshey, Thos. Forshey

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated December 13, 1888

It is with regrets that we chronicle the death of Mr. Thos. Forshey, of Franklin Tp., this County. Mr. Forshey was a man of much influence in the community in which he resided, and was held in general esteem by all who knew him. About a year ago he first became aware of the existence of the dread disease, cancer of the bone, which was to finally end his existence. The rapid progress of the disease made the use of the knife necessary, and he went to Cincinnati for medical treatment. He bravely placed his life in the hands of the surgeon, and submitted to an operation, terrible in its pain, and sufficient in results to grant only a short lease of life; it ended in one-half of his face being removed. It was hoped by his friends that this terrible ordeal would spare him for many years, but it was not to be so. He expired on last Wednesday, aged 55 years.

The interment took place on Thursday of last week at Mt. Tabor. Rev. Danford, of Carlisle, conducted the services. He was a prominent member of the I.O.O.F. and G.A.R. and both organizations assisted in performing the last sad rites over the body of their brother and comrade.

For some months she struggled with Christian patience against that dreaded diseased, Consumption, and when life was slowly ebbing away, it found her resigned and fully prepared to meet Him, whom she had so faithfully served. Her death was a severe shock to her large circle of friends and many and sincere were the expressions of sorrow, when the sad news was known, for to one and all she had endeared herself by her admirable qualities. She leaves a husband, six children and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. Her funeral took place on the 12th inst, from St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church by Requiem High Mass.

If we can judge her from her well spent life, she is now a shining member of that white robed choir singing the praises of Him whom she served so well in life. Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated November 22, 1888

When the ark of life is launched upon the waters of Time, the voyager within recognizes that he, in common with thousands of others, is being borne towards a harbor in which he ultimately must anchor. That harbor is Death. Perchance the allotted three score and ten may pass before the destination is reached, and perchance the bark may go down with a very small part of the voyage com... (cannot read the newspaper–do not know how many lines are skipped)...disaster at Valley Falls, W. Va., on Nov. 14th, 1888. For more than three years he was a postal clerk on the B.&O., and serving in that capacity when the dread accident occurred. He united with the M. E. Church in this place about two years ago. Lovely flowers bedecked the coffin, two wreaths and a cross, tributes of affection from the loving hands of his former companions. The large church was crowded to its utmost capacity and many were unable to gain admittance. Rev. Pettay conducted the services, after which, with his brethren of the I.O.O.F. as pall bearers, the vast concourse moved to the Cemetery, where the burial rite of the Order was read, the benediction pronounced, and the remains lowered into their last resting place. Poor Charley! His strange premonition of danger, expressed to a friend in less than an hour before his death, was nearer the truth than he knew. It is expressed in the following lines, which were  favorites of his

          “One sweetly solemn thought

Comes to me o’er and o’er,

I am nearer to home today

Than I ever have been before.”

.

“For it may be, I’m nearer home

          Nearer now than I think.”

Died, August 26th, 1888 at 7 o’clock a.m., near Malaga, Ohio, Ida May, youngest daughter of John R. And Elizabeth Mann, aged 4 years, 4 months and 16 days.

Little Ida, by her winning manner, had endeared herself to the hearts of all who knew her. In the bright morning of her life while her heart was pure, her little feet have crossed the shadowy valley, leaving a home full of desolation, and hearts that refuse to be comforted. How they will miss the little darling, yes, they will miss her under the shade trees where she played, they will miss her more by the fireside whence her little feet have strayed; they will see her toys ad her empty chair, and the books that were her pride, and they will speak with a silent speech, of the little girl that died. We shall see her on earth no more, but her memory is forever enshrined in our hearts. May God in his infinite mercy, comfort the heart broken parents, the weeping brother and sisters.

The subject of this sketch is the death of Jesse Everett, little son of Wm. J. Miracle and wife, of Quarry, Ohio, who died on the 30th day of December, 1887, after an illness of a short time.  His remains were interred in the cemetery at Hopewell Church at the 31st.

The gathering all deeply sympathizes with the bereaved friends, as they stood beside the grave of their son and brother, and as the coffin was lowered in the grave little Jesse Everett’s soul was safely housed in Heaven, singing with the angels.

Look up bereaved ones to God who is able to comfort the broken hearted, and to heal all our sorrows. He is the friend that sticketh closer than a brother, and as little Jesse has gone it is only one more dear friend that has passed over the dark river, and is waiting for his father, mother, sister and brother on the other side.

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated March 27, 1888

Died at her home in Bellaire on Sunday the 18th of March 1888, Lucy F. Sherer, wife of Fred [illegible] and daughter of William and Harriet Read, of Woodsfield Ohio, aged 26 years and 6 months. Early in life she united with the M.E. church and maintained a consistent walk with her Savior to the last. Her faith never wavered, but all through her sickness she was cheerful. In the early period of womanhood, in the midst of loving friends, with much to live for, and a prospect of contributing largely to the enjoyment of others the unsparing hand of death was laid upon her and called her away. How mysterious the ways of God! Truly, what He does we know not now. Everything that loving friends and a devoted husband could do was done to break the power of disease, but their efforts were of now avail.

A slow wasting consumption finally did its work. During her illness, while entertaining a hope of recovery she patiently awaited His Will, and the Lord took her, and her end was peace. Her day of life was not half over when she was called where no nights throws a shadow. She departed from her home, her kind husband, her aged mother, her loving sisters and brothers and her dear little son in full assurance of a dwelling place a God in heaven.

Her remains were brought back to her old home in Woodsfield and laid beside those of her father, as she requested. The funeral service conducted by Rev. E. A. Jester of the M.E. church, and the large number of relatives, friends, school mates and neighbors who followed her to her last resting place, bore tribute to the respect and affection in which she was held by all. Taken away from those who fondly loved her, she was left a precious memory of Christian graces to console those in their grief.

Nearly the whole of his three score years and ten were spent in the neighborhood of Fairview and he had many friends in this vicinity. He was one of the fathers among the Masonic fraternity and was made a member of that order nearly forty years ago. A large number of the members of Friendship Lodge of this place accompanied the remains from the Albert House on Sunday morning.

Interment was made in the cemetery at Fairview, the Masonic Lodge at that place taking charge of the services.–Barnesville Enterprise

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated November 22, 1888

Walter S. Steenrod, the oldest son of N. W. And Nancy E. Steenrod, of Salem Tp., died of heart disease and dropsy, Oct. 20th 1888, aged 17 years, 7 months and 12 days, after an illness of several weeks, during which time he bore his affliction with much patience and Christian fortitude. He leaves a father, mother, two sisters, one brother and a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. Walter united with the Christian Church in the 16th year of his age and lived a Christian life. He was a faithful member of the church; his seat was never vacant. He was an affectionate friend, a kind brother, kind and considerate in his daily walk, and was loved by all who knew him. This was indeed a sad stroke to his parents and friends, but remember, bereaved ones, God is merciful as well as just.

His remains were followed by a long procession of relatives, friends, and acquaintances, to the Salem Cemetery. And then his body was laid away in its last resting place to await the general resurrection. How great the consolation that when the loved ones are torn from us that they have only departed to a better home. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community; the prayers of the people and the promises of the gospel in this sad hour. Walter was always smiling and the smile was still on his fact when the Lord in his mercy called him home to live with him forever.

Our home is sad and lonely now

          We view thy vacant chair;

We’ll hear no more thy lovely voice,

Nor see they face so fair.

.

But, dearest Walter, fare the well,

          Our loss to you is gain;

You left this earth esteemed by all,

          Without one blot or stain.

Thornberry, Grandma Thornberry

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated March 20, 1888

Beallsville, Ohio. Grandmother Thornberry lived a consistent Christian until the 12th day of March, 1888, when, with trust and confidence in Jesus, she drifted peacefully over the river where waves break on a brighter shore than this. She was a member of the Church of Christ, for 60 years or more, and died int eh 89th year of her age. Ever since her husband’s death, which occured seven years ago, she always expressed a desire to depart and be with Christ and her aged companion, who had gone before. A few days before she died she said “I am going home.” The lamp of her life has gone out to us, but I doubt now, it shines with a far brighter light in the City of God.

Source:  Spirit of Democracy Tuesday, July 31, 1888, page 3

Departed this life July 17th, 1888, at her daughter’s, Mrs. Stephen Atkinson, at Cameron, Ohio, Mrs. Phoebe Ward, after a short illness. She leaves three sons and three daughters, who reside in Cameron and vicinity. Sister Ward was born in Wayne Tp., Monroe County, Ohio, April 13th, 1811, and at her death was 77 years, 3 months and 4 days old. She was a daughter of Joseph Martin. Over fifty years ago Sister Ward with her husband united with the Disciple Church of Christ, and lived a consistent member of the same until her death. She has crossed over to meet her husband who had crossed over a few years ago, where parting will be no more. As long as she was able to go she was always in her place at the House of God. Just before she died she called her children around her bed and said to them: Meet me in the Paradise of God dear children. Will you obey mother’s last command, and meet that loving mother where parting will be no more? Death is always an affecting theme. Yet in the light of the blessed gospel its gloomy sadness is dispelled. We weep to know we shall clasp hands with her no more in this life, yet we rejoice in the blessed hope that she now awaits us on the heavenly shore. Funeral services were conducted by the writer of this article from Revelations, 7th and last clause of the 17th verse: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. The many friends of the departed one have the love and best wishes of all her children for their kindness to them in their mother’s last sickness. May God’s blessings rest upon all of her sorrowing children and friends.

Wiley, John Sr. Wiley

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated March 27, 1888

Sudden Death. John Wiley, Sr., a citizen of Jerusalem, and brother of Wm. J. Wiley of that place, was suddenly taken ill on last Wednesday afternoon and by 4 o’clock of that evening was dead. His death was due to an overdose of morphine, administered by himself. It seems that he had been in the habit of using the deadly opiate, but was thought by his friends to be cured, as he had abandoned its use for some months. On Tuesday he came to Woodsfield, returning home the same evening. On Wednesday, it was noticed by the family and others, that he had been in a half stupified condition and that his mind was by no means in its normal condition.

His state was observed by various persons, and he was advised to return home. This he did, and expired in a few moments after his arrival there. All doubts as to the cause of his demise, were removed by the finding of a small vial of morphine with about half of the contents used.

Mr. Wiley was about 60 years of age, was a man of more than usual intelligence and ability as a conversationalist. How, or where he obtained the morphine is a mystery, as all druggists and physicians within ten miles of Jerusalem, had been notified of his habit, and warned not to sell to him.

Death of Rev. G. M. Wilson.
Our Hannibal correspondent sends us the following account of the death and funeral of the Rev. G. M. Wilson, pastor of the M. E. church at that place:
The people of this community were shocked on last Thursday evening to learn of the sad death of Rev. G. M. Wilson aged 57 years, pastor for nearly five years of the English Methodist Episcopal church at this place and also of the Hannibal circuit. Rev. Wilson was born near Stafford, Monroe County, Ohio and has been engaged in the ministry for nineteen years, being a member of the East Ohio conference.
He had been holding a very successful protracted meeting at Sardis for three weeks past, but had not been in the best health for some time and on last Monday, feeling badly, he accompanied his wife home intending to return Tuesday to his meeting.
On Monday night, he became very ill, but his condition was not considered serious until early Tuesday morning when he became unconscious, suffering from inflammation of the middle ear which affected his brain. His physician, Dr. T W. McKelvey of this place, was summoned and later Dr. Schmied of New Martinsville and Dr. Brainard of Cleveland, but he was beyond medical aid and died Thursday evening at half past five o'clock without regaining consciousness. He leaves a wife, four sons and four daughters, who were all at home when his death occurred except one son and one daughter. The loss to the family, the church, and humanity in general is a sad one as he was beloved by all and the relatives have the sympathy of many friends.
His funeral, which was the largest that ever occurred at this place, there being fully a thousand people present attending it, took place Sunday morning at the English Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by Presiding Elder Dr. D. C. Osbourne, assisted by Rev. Clark of Powhatan, Rev. C. I. Petty of Matamoras, Rev. R. W. Martin, members of the East Ohio conference and Rev. W. M. Kinsley of the West Virginia conference and Rev. Rogatsky, pastor of the German Methodist Episcopal church of this place.
Rev. Wilson was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge of Chandlersville, Ohio, and the members of that order from New Martinsville, New Matamoras, Clarington and Powhatan were present and assisted in the ceremonies of that organization.
Interment in the Harter cemetery.
