Barlow, (baby) Barlow

Source:  Spirit of Democracy  Jan. 13, 1898

Stafford --  Mr. and Mrs. James BARLOW of Jerles buried their BABY at Southerland a few days ago.  Much sympathy is felt for the stricken young couple, as twice in the short space of one year the death angel darkened their happy home, each time taking an only idol and leaving them childless.  None but those who have lain their little ones away can imagine the desolation of a home where baby eyes and baby hands are closed and stilled forever.  May “He who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb,” bind up the bleeding heart with the promise of “Where they are you can go.”

Barlow, Harold Barlow

Barlow, Jesse Barlow

Source:  Spirit of Democracy  Jan. 6, 1898

HAROLD, infant son of James and Jennett BARLOW, aged 8 months and 7 days, died December 27, 1897.  Just 10 months from that evening JESSE, and older brother died.  It seems hard for father and mother to part with their only children, yet He that said, “Suffer little children to come unto me,” knows best.  Jesse and Harold have parted from a world of sin, trouble and death, to purity and life everlasting.  Their little feet are among the golden pebbles on the other shore, in care of the tender Shepherd, waiting for father and mother to come.  Then scatter your flowers over their graves in sad remembrance of them, but think they are with the fairest flowers, companions of angels and all the redeemed of earth.  So weep not.                                Allie N.

Belford, Benjamin Belford

Some eleven years ago, believing it his duty to be identified with some branch of the Church, be became a member of the West Union church, in which he lived faithfully to the shades of death. He was liberal in his views, and often worshiped in churches other than his own. After a brief illness he died at his home April 12, 1898, and his body was interred in Mt. Olive cemetery. He left as a heritage to his loved ones the evidence that he was going to Jesus, Even so, come, Lord Jesus.          S.

She was among the number who could happily and truthfully say: “My enemies are few.” She never failed to extend charity to the poor and distressed when in her power to do so. She leaves one son and a host of friends. Our loss is her eternal gain, for we know according to God’s word that she fell asleep in Jesus.

Mr. Washburn had been ailing for some time but his condition was not considered serious until within a few days of his death. Colonel Washburn’s military record is a brave and gallant one. He enlisted in April, 1861, and was made captain of Company B, 25th Ohio-volunteer infantry.

He served as captain of that company in all of the campaigns in which the regiment took part, until August, 1862, when the 116th regiment of Ohio volunteer infantry was organized and he was commissioned its colonel by Governor Tod. He served I all the campaigns in the Shenandoah valley until July 18, 1864. At the battle of Snicher’s Ferry he was terribly and it was thought mortally wounded, being shot in the head, the ball entering the left eye. From this wound he never fully recovered and was never able to again join his regiment, but was assigned as commandant of the post at Wheeling. Brummelle, Charity Brummelle

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated September 8, 1898

(Calais) Charity Brummelle, wife of C. S. Brummelle, died September 1, and was interred in the Calais cemetery on the following day. Such a gift had nature in her bounty bestowed on the subject of this sketch that she was universally loved by all and although her earthly destiny was so soon sunk to the dust and her glorious faculties trodden under earth in the blossom of life, yet the full of inborn riches of love to all living will never, never fade away as long as her acquaintances and friends retain the faculty of remembrance, until “all should be confined within the bounds which nature has assigned.” Her father, David Carpenter, is still living and resides in West Virginia. Her mother, Mary Harrison, died when Charity was but 18 months old. The family consisted of four children, all girls Campsdel, who died young; Celestia Bland and Captola Vandine both of whom reside in West Virginia.

Charity Brummelle was  born in Clay county, Indiana, and was 37 years old, when she died. She had been sick quite a long time and especially the past three months she had faded away very rapidly. Her disease was lung trouble. She has gone away and leaves a family of four young children. Roy, the youngest, is just a little baby boy and it is sad when we think of him. His mamma cannot caress the little fellow now. And then there is little Josie, a fine little girl she is, but how hard it bereaves her to know that her dear mamma had bid her a farewell good-bye. The other two children, Sherman and Otto, are older a are good little boys and will ever ave a fond recollection of their kind mother. Their mother was a christian lady. She united with the Christian church some twenty years ago. She had lived in West Virginia and Noble county, but the greater part of her life she resided in Seneca township and after he marriage she resided in Calais. She was a good woman and careful in training her children and was always at the post of duty in family cares but the recollections of the Calais citizens of her susceptibility from the first will abide to the last with them in affection and she did faithfully whatsoever duties were enjoined upon her in life and retained her reasoning faculties to the last when she valiantly passed the threshold of this existence.

Buchanan, Alexander Buchanan  (obit 2)

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated October 6, 1898

Brother Alexander Buchanan was born February 25, 1822, died September 10, 1898. He was made a Master Mason at Stafford, Ohio, in June 1863, and retained his membership in the lodge at that place until May 11, 1892, when he was admitted a member of Monroe Lodge of Woodsfield, Ohio.

In his religious associations he was a Presbyterian, and was a prominent and liberal member of that church. The whole history of his life, from his boyhood days to the hour of his death, is that of honorable conduct in every detail. He loved above all other things his home and the wife and children and grandchildren by whom he was surrounded and to whom he was a most devoted, indulgent and affectionate husband and father.

As a Mason he was ardent, zealous and enthusiastic; inclement, indeed was the night when he was not present at our meetings, if able to get there. He dearly loved the order, and was respected and loved by each and every brother who had the honor and pleasure of his acquaintance; and each and all feel keenly the great loss which our beloved order, the church of which he was a member, his devoted wife, children and the entire community have sustained his death; and to the bereaved widow and children we tender our profoundest sympathy, yet it is consolation to know that as a man and a Mason his whole life was such that he need not fear death; for him the final summons brought no dismay, no apprehension, “but surrounded by those he loved and with a smile upon his countenance, he entered upon the dark voyage so full of mystery and yet so full of promise and prospect and faith and hope as to banish all sense of dread from the mind of him upon whose kindling vision the receding earth was only bringing more clearly into view, the light that shone from the farther shore, guiding him on the way to his eternal rest in the Celestial Lodge on high.”

          J. P. Spriggs, Wire Hamilton, A. J. Pearson–Committee Monroe Lodge F.&A.M. no. 189.

Ewing, Absolom Ewing

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated August 11, 1898

It is with sadness that we note the death of our friend and neighbor Absolom Ewing, who died July 30. Mr. Ewing was stricken with heart trouble some few weeks ago, but no one thought the end so near. As a friend and neighbor a community would need no better. He was always cheerful and ever ready and willing to lend a helping hand to those in need and give good advice to all. He seemed to have always had his share of disappointments and adversities in this life, but bore them with grace and fortitude, never murmuring nor complaining, but willing and submissive to the will of Him who doeth all things well. He died in full faith believing in Jesus, the One who said: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” He has fought a good fight, he has finished the course, and has kept the faith.

Gatchell, Nathan Gatchell

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated October 27, 1898

(Graysville) Death has again been in our midst and called to his eternal home in heaven one of our oldest and most highly esteemed citizen, Nathan Gatchell. His death occurred at the home of his son and daughter Mr. And Mrs. Winfield J. Gatchell of Graysville, October 11. Such a gift had nature in her bounty bestowed on the subject of this sketch that he was universally loved by all and although his earthly destiny was sunk to the dust, and his glorious faculties trodden under earth, yet the full of inborn riches of love to all living will never, never fade away as long as his acquaintances and friends retain the faculty of remembrance, until “all should be confined within the bounds which nature hath assigned.”

The deceased was born in Maryland June 23, 1817, and was therefore at the time of his death aged 81 years, 3 months, and 18 days. He came from his Maryland home to Belmont county where he resided at Lordstown for some time; from there he moved to Monroe county in 1841 and has been a resident here ever since. The family consisted of 3 boys and 6 girls. The subject of this sketch being among the oldest. Two of the boys and three sisters have preceded him across te cold chilling waves of death, there to meet their beloved parents who have gone on before. Mr. Gatchell became a member of the M. P. Church at an early age in which church he lived a consistent member until his death. He was a good man and careful in training his children. He was always at the post of duty in family career. The recollections of the Graysville citizens of his susceptibility from the first will abide to the last with them in affection. He did faithfully whatsoever duties were enjoined upon him in life and retained his reasoning faculties to the last when he valiantly passed the threshold of this existence.

On the 26th of February, 1849, while still in Belmont county, he led to the altar Miss Elizabeth Devaul, who shared his joys and sorrows through the days of his youth, on toward the autumn of life, but preceded him to the grave June 7, 1891. Mr. Gatchell had been ailing for some weeks but his friends did not think he was seriously ill, neither was he until a few days before he expired, when they began to fear that his disease was reaching dangerous degree. Just before he died he expressed his willingness to go, as his future prospects were bright. But after it was evident that he must die, his friends seemed reluctant about giving him up; even knowing that he would be better off by far than if her was permitted to remain with us. Of course it is hard to give him up, hard to part with him, knowing that we shall meet him no more on this side of the grave; but it is consoling to know that if we live a righteous life we will meet him at God’s right hand in heaven. I can image I see Grandpa standing just within the pearly gates with his left hand beckoning us on toward that haven of eternal rest, while his right hand is extended toward us as if to clasp hands and welcome us home. The funeral services took place from W. J. Gatchell’s residence at 1 p.m. Wednesday, and was conducted by Rev. John Cooper assisted by Rev. Palmer. He leaves one son and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. To him were born two sons, one son ere this has given him a glorious welcome such as I hope he will be able to give us when we reach the new Jerusalem.

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated November 3, 1898

Miss Mary Virginia Hodge, the subject of this sketch, was born to Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Hodge, December 12, 1865, and died October 17, 1898, and was interred in the beautiful Calais cemetery October 19. The remains were conducted to the M.E. church where Rev. Wycoff of Batesville circuit, conducted the funeral ceremonies in a most elegant address derived from scriptural readings and examples relative to such a good kindly christian person as the deceased was during the past accountable years of her noble life. She was a member of the M.E. church and a christian true to the principles of her bible guide. She was always pleasant and kind to all–either church members or others, and this is true for those who may chance to read this sketch who knew her will say it is true of Mollie as she was formerly called by her acquaintances. The deceased was for a long time afflicted with consumption and an interruption from the consumptive effects of the bronchial and vocal cords. A large concourse of people attended the funeral services and reviewed the remains at the church after which many people repaired with the remains to the cemetery where the deceased has carried out the scripture injuction: “From dust thou art unto dust thou shalt return.” At her death bedside, when she expired she was surrounded by the loving family of the parental household and by mourning friends; yet she passed from this glorious comfort of friends and has gone to emulate her career in the eternal space that we may take for one of our true friends and christian lady examplair as a future guiding star for our faith and make a hopeful response regarding duty well performed when it listens in the darkness of the tomb and hears the still small voice; “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” We can only say in our sadness, farewell.

Hoskins, Mary Ellen Hoskins

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio April 7, 1898

In the life of Heaven there are no sorrowful partings, no severance of pleasant fellowship, n shutting up of sweet and holy chapters of life. In the Father’s house friend has never said to friend “farewell.” How different upon earth! Friend after friend departs. Today we report the sad death of Mrs. Mary Ellen Hoskins, which occurred at her residence Thursday afternoon, March 23, after suffering for many years. No one knew her but to love her. The “open hand” was always extended to relieve the wants of needy; never cast down or troubled so much herself, but that she was ready to shake off the gloom of her own surrounds to make brighter and more cheerful the lives of her friends. Many are the generous and noble deeds that stand out as enduring monuments all along the pathway of Mary Ellen’s life.

Dear Mary Ellen, for a few days goodbye:

For in a short time we will fade and die,

But in that fair and happy land,

Take no more the parting hand:

True, thou wast dear to us,

And it was hard for us to part,

But we would not call thee back again

To this world of sin and pain,

But leave thee in that land of rest

Where we forever shall be blest.

                   A Friend.

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated February 10, 1898

Round Bottom: Departed this life Saturday evening, February 5, Miss Emma Kraft, from typhoid fever, after a short illness. This time death has claimed one our beloved maidens, the oldest daughter of Henry and Louisa Kraft, at the early age of nineteen years. She was a bright young lady, beloved and highly respected by all who knew her. But she has gone to that bright shore beyond, where sickness and sorrow never come. Why is it that one so kind, so bright, the light of a home, must be called way at bloom of youth? But to the family of which she belonged, her loss is greatest, as they miss her companionship and no doubt realize as never before that

A precious one from us is gone

A voice we loved is stilled:

A place is vacant in our home,

          Which never can be filled.

.

Although his life consisted of only a few short years, he will be greatly missed in his home and in our human weakness we are apt to wonder why one so young, only in the beginning of life, should be called away. McVay, Jessie McVay

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated October 20, 1898

Jessie McVay, wife of Prof. Charles McVay, departed this life at her mother’s home in Stafford October 4, 1898. The deceased was 26 years and 8 months old. The writer became acquainted with her near two years ago. She was then an invalid and at times a great sufferer. My first acquaintance with her impressed me with her christian character. Though young in christian experience, her faith and zeal for God and his cause was clearly marked. Amid her spasms of severe pain and suffering there were no words of complaint or murmuring against Providence. But with the patience of a christian of riper years, she bore it all with a sainted calmness, giving evidence of her strong trust in her Savior who had said that all things should work together for good to them that love God. I had the pleasure of visiting her often in her afflictions, frequently reading to her the promises of God and joining with her in prayer. These services were a source of great comfort to her. Her responses during prayer gave evidence that she was living in touch with her Savior and that her spiritual horizon was clear. As her end was nearing, her faith and hope of a blessed future seemed to be more intense and stable. She knew she would soon pass away, yet it gave her no anxious thought for she felt that she was ready, willing and waiting her Master’s call, come home. Yet if it was the Lord’s will, she wished to live for the sake of her kind husband who, during all her prolonged sickness, was when possible, her constant attendant, never tiring or becoming impatient amid his prolonged watching and care for his afflicted companion. Her mother, brother and sisters were equally kind and attentive to poor Jessie, all doing what they could to make her comfortable. Yet amid the kindness of husband and friends, death came and claimed her for its victim. She bad them all farewell; said she was going home to Jesus and asked them to meet her in Heaven. Then fell asleep to Jesus. How blest the righteous, when they die. Her funeral was preached by Rev. Martin, the present pastor of Stafford charge. After which her body was laid beneath the sod to await the general resurrection when God shall bid it rise to enter upon her eternal reward in Heaven.

Pyles Jacob J. Pyles  (Obit 2)

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated January 19, 1899

Who does not tremble at the threshold of death? Who doth not weep for departed friends? Who, even though their loss be sweetened with the sweet promise of “The life Elysium”? In the darkness of the night in the solitary hours of loneliness, by the aid of contemplation, we see our friends who were but are no more. Their good deeds life a river that runs through a beautiful valley brightening and gladdening the landscape and scattering happiness in its train flit through our memories leaving a sweet sunbeam of gladness to sweeten the meditations though tinged with a ray of genuine sorrow. The subject of this chronicle, Jacob J. Pyles, son of Elmer Pyles, deceased, was born May 10, 1888, and died December 21, 1898, being at the time of his death 10 years, 7 months and 11 days of age.

Though his life was brief, the short summers which passed were of the pleasantest. He was a bright and intelligent little boy, much loved by all who knew him. Many times during his sickness, fully cognizant that the end was near spoke fervently about his “going home” and seemed impatient for the time to come. He fully realized though perhaps he did not know the words of Colton. “Death is the Liberator of him whom freedom can not release, the physician of him whom medicine can not cure, and the comforter of him whom time cannot console.” Death had no terrors for him. It was as the sweet sunshine of the pleasing home. {section of newspaper cut off}....His remains were laid to rest in the New Castle cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev.           Again has the angel of death visited our community and taken for its prey Miss Carrie Schneider, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John Schneider of Hannibal. At the early age of 21 years and 4 months this precious one was taken from us. Why must one so kind, so bright, the light of a home, be called away at the bloom of youth? Miss Schneider was one of our most respected and beloved young ladies. To the father and mother and to the family to which she belonged her loss is the greatest.

Miss Schneider’s illness was very short. She had been staying at Wheeling, where she was suddenly taken ill by that dreadful disease, typhoid fever, and being unable to reach home she was removed to the city hospital where she died February 9, after an illness of little over one week.

Her remains were brought to New Martinsville, W.Va., and from there taken to the Salem cemetery where she was laid in her last and peaceful resting place, Rev. J. J. Bodmer conducting the services. She leaves a father and mother, two sisters and one brother and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her death. The parents and the entire family have the sincere sympathy of the whole community.

She was a favorite of {part of newspaper cut off}.....sweet perfume of childhood life, wherever she went. But just after Christmas, when the celebration of the anniversary of the birth of the Holy Child Jesus was fresh in the minds, when parents seem to show more plainly their love for their children, the Master came and plucked a bright flower to garland a wreath of honor and glory for heaven. Dear Cressa went away December 30, there to gambol with the lambs whom the Master has taken to Himself. She has gone to meet Him who said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me etc.” She leaves father, mother, two brothers and one sister to mourn for her who in her youthful beauty went up to Glory to beckon them the way. Resolution of Respect -- Whereas, the Divine Ruler of the Universe has, by the hand of death, removed from our midst our beloved brother, A.H. SINCLAIR; and whereby we are once more called to a realization of the fact that the silver cord is loosed, and the golden bowl is broken; that beckoning hands from Heaven’s wreath-bound shore have once again rudely sundered fellowship’s fraternal ties; and whereas, while realizing that it is beyond love’s power to reach beyond the grave and call back those.

Therefore be it resolved, that we commend those whose hearts are thus distressed and saddened to the consolations of the great Comforter, whose loving hand can make smooth the rough places of life; and who can console the most deeply saddened heart; and resolved that we extend to the bereaved family and friends of the deceased; the sympathy of our order, one more member of which has thus gone before us in obedience to the call of the Great Chancellor Commander above.

The committee recommends that these resolutions be published in The Spirit of Democracy and in the Monroe Gazette, that they be spread upon the minutes of the lodge, and that a copy of the same be forwarded to the bereaved wife and to the mother of the deceased brother.

Stephens, James Stephens  (obit 2)

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated December 15, 1898

The “Grim Reaper” has agin invaded our community and called from our midst one of our aged and most respected citizens. James Stephens was born March 10, 827, in Greene County, Pa. And died December 9, 1898, aged 71 years, 8 months and 29 days. He was married to Barbara Whitlatch March 13, 1851. To this union were born two children–Sarah Jane, who died at the age of four years, and Josephus C., who survives his father. About the year 1852 Mr. And Mrs. Stephens moved to Wood county, W.Va., where in 1865 Mrs. Stephens died. Mr. Stephens was married two years later to Lucy A. Reynolds at St. Marys, Pleasants county, W.Va., and the same year moved to New Castle, this county, at which place they have since resided. This union was blessed with five children, one son and four daughters, all of whom are living. Mr. Stephens united with the Presbyterian church at New Castle January 8, 1888, and has ever since led a consistent and conscientious life.

On Friday morning Mr. Stephens arose in apparently in a s good health as usual. During the forenoon he was engaged with his son in hauling about his farm. A short time before noon they were joined by Lewis Saffel of New Castle and quite work about 11 o’clock, preparatory to dinner. Messrs. Robert Stephens and Lewis Saffel proceeded to the barn to put away the team leaving Mr. Stephens at a sheep house which he intended bedding for the sheep before returning home. The team was put away, the dinner bell rang, but he did not come. It rang again but he did not hear it. Death had laid his fey hand upon his brow and he was no more. Gone from this world’s cares, its broils, its sufferings, its disappointments. Gone into that mysterious realm from which no traveler returns. Gone–but not forever. The star of hope rising o’er the grave of every righteous man like a beacon light upon the rocky seashore to guide the weary mariner points to a grander life beyond life’s stormy sea.

          “Beyond the sunset’s radiant glow

          There’s a brighter world I know.”

True the spark of life had fled- but whither? Who shall tell its journey beyond the tomb? We knew him as a kind father, as a faithful friend, as a model citizen, and while the cup of sorrow is full to overflowing while we chronicle his sad end, as we picture the empty chair, as we see him “on memory’s wall” and as we remember his many kind offices, we recall with pleasure the beautiful words of Addison:

“The soul, secure in her existence, smiles

At the drawn dagger, and defies its point:

The stars shall fall away, the sun himself

Grow dim with age; and nature sink in years:

But thou shalt flourish in immortal youth,

Unhurt amidst the war of elements,

The wreck of matter and the clash of worlds.”

The funeral services were under the charge of the Masonic order of which he was a member for thirty years. They were ably assisted by Rev. D. B. Cope of the Antioch circuit. Interment in the Presbyterian cemetery at New Castle Sunday.

Stephens, James Stephens  (obit 3)

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated December 29, 1898

Resolutions of the Death of Brother James Stephens

On December 2, 1898, the Angel of Death again appeared and called from among us our beloved brother, James Stephens. Although Brother Stephens will no more be present at our meetings to assist and cheer us in our labors in the lodge, we fully believe from his uprightness and christian character, and his zealous attachment to the tenets of Free Masonry, that he was well equipped to give the important “word” to the Tiler of eternity, and that he has gone thence to serve and obey the Grand Master of the Universe, who is our better Master. Brother James Stephens was born March 10, 1827, and died December 9, 1898, aged 71 years, 8 months and 20 days. He was made a Master Mason in Monroe Lodge no. 189, F & A M April 13, 1879, and remained a member thereof until death. He was made a Royal Arch Mason in Woodsfield Chapter No. 85, R.A.M. December 25, 1882, of which he continued a member until it surrendered its charter in 1891.

By the death of Brother Stephens the Masonic fraternity has lost an upright and zealous member, the community a good citizen and kind neighbor, and his widow and children an affectionate husband and a kind and indulgent parent.

To the family of the deceased we extend our most cordial sympathy in this their sore affliction; but we bow in humble submission to the will of “Him who death all things well.”

Resolved, that a copy of these resolutions be furnished the family of the deceased, and to each of the Woodsfield papers; and that the same be spread upon the records of the lodge.

Taylor, Forest Taylor (obit 2)

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated January 27, 1898

Lanigs. The people fo this community were shocked on Wednesday to learn of the sad death of Forrest Taylor of Altitude. Mr. Taylor had been sick for some time but it was not suspected that the end was so near. Forrest was a good boy; his congenial nature, his amiable disposition and his love for the sunny side of everything, made him at once a pleasing companion and called around him many friends. Mr. Taylor contracted the measles about a year ago, from which he never fully recovered. The immediate cause of his death however was typhoid fever. He was hopeful to the last and clung to life with a fortitude that was characteristic of the man. The lines of Mrs. Barbauld seem appropriate in this connection, only noting the difference, his life was brief.

.

          Life! We’ve been long together

          Through pleasant and through cloudy weather;

‘Tis hard to part when friends are dear,

          Perhaps ’twill cost a sigh, a tear;

Then steal away, give little warning,

          Choose thine own time,

Say not Good Night, - but in some brighter clime

          Bid me Good Morning.

.

Wednesday morning his spirit winged its heavenly flight to that undiscovered country, from whose borne no traveler returns. Interment at Pleasant Ridge cemetery Thursday forenoon.

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio May 5, 1898

Another soldier has gone to the great beyond to his eternal reward. The angel of death visited our community and laid his pallid hand upon one whom we loved and cherished, a father and friend. Thomas Twaddle, who has been in poor health for several years, departed this life April 19. He had been in feeble health the greater part of the winter and still grew weaker; but death came very unexpectedly.  He peacefully fell asleep to await the resurrection of the just.

He was born in Jefferson county, August 10, 1830. December 9, 1850, he was united in marriage to Miss Luvina Truex. To this union six daughters were born. IN 1875 his beloved companion and mother was taken from him embrace leaving him with the care of six motherless daughters, all of whom survive their father except Mrs. Violet Fisher who died a few years ago.

He rendered gallant service during the late rebellion. After serving one year in the 77th regiment, Ohio volunteer infantry, he was discharged on account of disability. He then reenlisted in the 116th Ohio. From this he was transferred to the 62d Ohio, then to the 67th Ohio, where he served till the close of the war, making in all three years. He was a man of manly principle, always adhering to what was right, and ever ready to help those in need of assistance. It was a pleasure to him to do so. He always remembered: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” In the death of Mr. Twaddle we have lost a most worthy neighbor; the daughters a kind and loving father, and sisters a noble and only brother, the mother an honorable son.

Wilson, G. M. Wilson

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated February 3, 1898

Our Hannibal correspondent sends us the following account of the death and funeral of the Rev. G. M. Wilson, pastor of the M. E. Church at that place:

The people of this community were shocked on last Thursday evening to learn of the sad death of Rev. G. M. Wilson aged 57 years, pastor for nearly five years of the English Methodist Episcopal church at this place and also of the Hannibal circuit. Rev. Wilson was born near Stafford, Monroe county, Ohio, and has been engaged in the ministry for nineteen years, being a member of the East Ohio conference.

He had been building a very successful protracted meeting at Sardis for three weeks past, but had not been in the best of health for some time and on last Monday, feeling, badly, he accompanied his wife home intending to return Tuesday to his meeting.

On Monday night he became very ill, but his condition was not considered serious until early Tuesday morning when he became unconscious, suffering from inflammation of the middle ear which affected his brain. His physician, Dr. T. W. McKelvey of this place, was summoned and later Dr. Schmied of New Martinsville and Dr. Brainard of Cleveland, but he was beyond medical aid and died on Thursday evening at half past five o’clock without regaining consciousness. He leaves a wife, four sons and four daughters, who were all at home when his death occurred except one son and one daughter. The loss to the family, the church, and humanity in general is a sad one as he was beloved by all and the relatives have the sympathy of many friends.

His funeral, which was the largest that ever occurred at this place, there being fully a thousand people present attending it, took place Sunday morning at the English Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by presiding elder Dr. D. C. Osbourne, assisted by Rev. Clark of Powhatan, Rev. E. S. Bowers of Clarington, Rev. C. I. Petty of Matamoras, Rev. R. W. Martin, members of the East Ohio Conference and Rev. W. M. Kinsley of the West Virginia conference and Rev. Rogatsky, pastor of the German Methodist Episcopal church of this place.

Rev. Wilson was a member of th I.O.O.F. lodge of Chandlersville, Ohio, and the members of that order from New Martinsville, New Matamoras, Clarington and Powhatan were present and assisted in the ceremonies of that organization. Interment in the Harter cemetery.

She united with the Christian church five years ago and has ever since lived a true and earnest christian. How sad it is to part with such a girl as Inis. Being in the bloom of youth, an honest, truthful girl. If she could have lived she would have been in the past—one who was loved and respected by all she met with. While we realize our loss we should feel that we have a great consolation that if we all live as we know she has lived that we will meet her on that shore, where farewell tears and parting words will be no more.

A sadness was cast over the whole community Wednesday night of last week to hear of the death of little CARRIE WILLILENA WITTENBROOK, youngest child and the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Wittenbrook of Woodsfield.  She was young to die and was the sunshine and pride of the family in which her stay was short, only a journey of 2 years, 10 months and 21 days.  She was a br___, happy child, and loved by all who knew her but we hope to meet in heaven where no farewell tears are shed.

Farewell, Carrie, you have left us,

          And your loss we deeply feel;

But ‘twas God that has bereft us,

He can all our sorrows heal.

                   A Friend.

Workman, Urana Workman

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated January 27, 1898

          Death of Mrs. Urana Workman.

It is indeed with a sad heart that I pen a few lines concerning the death of our friend and neighbor, Mrs. Urana Workman. She was born September 12, 1851, and departed this life January 6, 1898. Deceased was a daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Jacob Windland. Her father died when she was very small. Her mother married again and is now Mrs. Cornelius Knowlton of near Graysville. She leaves one brother, one sister, and two half sisters; all of whom reside near Graysville.

At the age of 17 she was united in marriage to Emmanuel Christy. To them was born one daughter, Maggie, who stood by her mothers’ beside during her sickness. On October 4, 1870 her husband was called to leave this world and she was married again to Archibald Workman. To this union was born eight children, seven boys and one girl; four boys and one girl are still living.

Then on October 14, 1888, this father was called to leave them and since that time she has been the same as father and mother to her family. She was sick for about four months. She bore her sickness with christian patience. Everything was done that could be done to prolong her life but it seemed that her time on earth was at an end. She was a member of the M. E. Church

at Fletcher chapel, commonly known as Otts. Her life was a good example for us to follow.

She was a perfect woman in every respect; none knew her but to love her. Thus a loving mother, a kind neighbor and true christian has left us. But she has gone to that home above where trouble, pain and sorrow will not grieve her more. She will be sadly missed by us all, but no place so much as home where her children need a mother’s guidance. But the one that doeth every thing for the best will guide and protect them. It is hard to part with those we love; it is hard to say goodby; but our loss is her gain. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Alfred Walls of Woodsfield, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Moffett cemetery.

          A Friend.

Yoss, Elizabeth Bertha Yoss

Source:  Spirit of Democracy  Jan. 6, 1898

ELIZABETH BERTHA YOSS, wife of Levi Yoss, born May 1845, died December 28, 1897.

In her youth she became a member of the Lutheran church, and lived in conformity to the laws of that body until September 21, 1891, when she was immersed by D.W. Harkins and became a member of the Church of Christ worshiping at West Union, Ohio, in which faith she continued until death released her from all care.

During her illness she never murmered [sic] or complained but bore her affliction as a christian soldier. Thus a kind neighbor, a loving mother, a devoted wife, and a beloved sister has left us, yet --.

“How sweet it will be in that beautiful land, To meet one another again!”

In her twenty-second year she was united in marriage with Mr. Yoss, and as a result of this union they were blest with ten children -eight boys and two girls,-- all of whom with her husband survive her.  The family circle is broken, one vacant seat is found.

“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.”

J.J. Bodmer preached the funeral discourse, after which her remains were interred in the Salem cemetery.                         H.J.W.
