      ----------

                                                      (From Monday's Daily.)

Morton Allen, aged 47 years, residing with his sister, Mrs. Anna Bean, in South Miller Street, this city, was struck by a passenger train on the New York Central lines this morning about eight-thirty o'clock and instantly killed.  The accident occurred at Clifty tower, near Prescott.

Allen was walking east on the railroad track when struck by the train, which is the "accommodation" which leaves here at eight-fifteen o'clock for Cincinnati.  The engineer of the train is said to have seen Allen on the track and to have blown the whistle as warning.

A number of the men working on the section witnessed the accident.  They say that Allen never looked about and seemingly had not known that the train was near.  They stated that the engineer did attempt to warn Allen by blowing the whistle.

The body was thrown in under the wheels of the engine and ground in two.  It was taken out horribly mangled, and placed aboard the train.  The body was left at Waldron, the agent there notifying County Coroner G. L. Inlow and Sheriff Henry S. Terry.

Because of the badly mangled condition of the body it was some time before the identity was discovered.  For a time it was thought that the man was a tramp who had been walking along the track.  When the coroner arrived and searched the man's clothing, articles were found which established his identity.

Mr. Allen had left his home here early this morning to go to Waldron to attend the funeral service of the late Jacob Jones.  Mrs. Bean, his sister, said today that the man had a habit of walking to Waldron several times a week and that he usually walked on the railroad tracks.

He was partially deaf, which accounted for his not hearing the warning sounded by the engineer of the train which struck him.

Mr. Allen had a mania for attending funerals and during his life had attended quite a number.

His body was identified this morning by Sheriff Terry, Claude Fix and Dr. Randolph, Waldron.

He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Anna Bean, with whom he lived; Mrs. William Green, of Shelby township, and Mrs. Henry Vawters, of Waldron; two half-brothers, Geroge Bittner [sic--Britton], of Oklahoma City, and Charles Allen of Boone County, Ind.; two half-sisters, Mrs. Node [sic--Mrs. Moses (Alice)] Banta, of Osgood, and Mrs. Harry** [sic--Mrs. David (Harriett)] Pope, of Washington township.

The body was brought to the Stewart & Fix undertaking parlors today and prepared for burial.  It will be taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. William Green, in Shelby township, Tuesday.  Funeral announcement will be made later.

[Submitter's Note:  This obituary was from a typed copy of the original, and this typed copy is available in the Shelby County Indiana genealogical library in Shelbyville.  At the bottom of the above article was the funeral notice from another edition, but it did not give the citation.  It also gave the ** note below.]

The funeral service of the late Morton Allen, who was struck and killed by a train Monday morning will be held Wednesday morning at ten-thirty o'clock at the Lewis Creek Baptist church.  Burial will be made in the Lewis Creek cemetery in charge of Stewart & Fix.

**Mrs. Harry Pope is Mrs. David Pope (Harriette)

Schell, Lottie M. Schell, nee Long

Source:  The Wayne County [Illinois] Press; Thursday, 28 Oct 1915

Lottie M., daughter of Albert and Melia Long was born June 2, 1884 near Cisne, Illinois.  Was united in holy matrimony to Miles E. Schell, December 19th, 1906.  Born to this union three daughters and one son.  She professed a hope in Christ in 1913 and lived a Christian life until death.  Departed this life October 9th, 1915, age 32 years, 3 months and 12 days.  She leaves to mourn, husband, three daughters and one son, two sisters and three brothers and a host of relatives and friends.

Thomas, Minerva M. Thomas nee Hilgenburgh     died July 2, 1915

Minerva M. Thomas was born at Powhatan, Ohio, September 4, 1842, and died at her home in Texas, (Duffy) Ohio, July 2, 1915, after a lingering illness of four months, caused by a complication of diseases. All that loving hands could do to alleviate her suffering and restore her to health was done by the family and friends; her age was 75 years, 9 months and 28 days.  She was married to Samuel Thomas (deceased) August 1862, and to this union were born five sons and two daughters. One son died in infancy and two others after they had grown to manhood.

There are left to mourn two sons, two daughters, eighteen grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, together with a number of relatives and friends who remember the many acts of Christian kindness shown by her. She will be sadly missed in the community and in the home.

She became a member of the Church of Christ when young and remained "steadfast in the Faith" until the end. During all the trials and afflictions of life she was content, having implicit faith in Him who said, " I will never leave thee nor forsake thee." And when overtaken by misfortune, she, by that helping hand, would ascend above them and move forward, and by her "good works" caused her light to shine.

As a wife and mother she was always kind; as a friend faithful, and above all as a Christian, faithful and true—and so ends the earthly life of one beloved by all.

We know we can not call her back but we can go to where she is, for we believe she has fallen asleep in Jesus. The funeral services were held by T. R. Doak, from her home and the little chapel where she worshipped, on July 4th; after which she was laid to rest in the nearby (probably Duffy) cemetery to await the resurrection of the just.
