Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, November 1, 1923

       Stanley, aged 12 years, Jennie, 9, Lottie, 7, and Alex, 5, of Dillonville, Ohio, perished in the flames that encircled their little frame cottage home one night last week. The children were sleeping in a room adjoining their parents and fire was discovered by the father.

       Cause of fire is unknown.

 

Beckwith, Augusta Beckwith

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, November 8, 1923

       Two sisters living in Toledo, who spent half a century in close companionship and who often expressed the wish that might die together, almost had their wish fulfilled.

       Mrs. Augusta Beckwith, aged 76, and Mrs. Anna R. Waldech, 65.

       Mrs. Beckwith died at 10:00 o’clock a.m. Oct. 25th, and her sister passed away 11 hours later.

 

Bott, Fred Bott

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, March 8, 1923

       Fred Bott, a well known and very highly respected citizen of Lewisville, died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville last Saturday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock.

       He leaves a wife, one daughter and two sons, Chas. and Irvin of Zanesville.

       He was a brother of Mr. L. D. Bott of Eastern avenue, Woodsfield, and leaves two other brothers and three sisters, J. H. Bott and Mrs. Chris Lauer of Columbus; Mrs. Mary Kathary of Medina; John Bott of Shawnee and Mrs. John Burg of New Lexington.

       The funeral will take place this (Wednesday) afternoon at 1:30.

       We hope to be able to give a full account of this good citizen later.

 

Boughner, E. C. Boughner

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, May 31. 1923

       E. C. Boughner, a very highly respected citizen of Salem Township, died Sunday evening, May 13th, at his home near Clarington, aged 82 years.

       His death came unexpectedly, as he had been in town all day where he attended church and spent several hours chatting with friends.

       A widow and two sons survive.

       Mr. Boughner spent his life in this county where he was well and favorably known and his passing away saddens many hearts and homes.

       Funeral services and burial the following Wednesday at Cameron, Ohio. The sympathy of a large circle of friends is extended to the sorrowing relatives.

 

Brown, Daisy Brown nee Goodwin

       The Barnesville Enterprise of last week contained the following:

       “The death of Mrs. Daisy Goodwin Brown, at Malaga, brought grief to many relatives and friends both here and throughout Monroe county. A son was born to her last Saturday, September 8, which caused her death. She was 24 years, 4 months and 15 days of age.

       “Mrs. Brown was born at Malaga, Ohio, April 23, 1899, the daughter of Wilson E. and Mary P. Goodwin. She grew to womanhood there, received her early education there and became a member of the Bush Church on July 19, 1914, being baptized by Brother W. S. Gibbons. She lived a Christian life according to, “The Will of God.” She was loved by all who knew her and especially by her school friend.

       “She was united in marriage to Clarence Brown, June 3, 1922. They made their home in Wheeling. Besides her husband and her infant son, she is survived by her parents, two sisters, two brothers and a host of relatives and friends.

       “Funeral services were held at the Bush church at Malaga Tuesday and she was laid to rest in the church-yard there.

       The Somerton correspondent to The Enterprise also contained the following:

       “Many hearts were filled with sorrow when news came of the death of Mrs. Daisy Goodwin Brown.

 

Brown, Thelma Brown

        Funeral services will be held at Trinway Friday afternoon for Thelma Brown, aged 15 months, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Brown, 920* Orchard st.  The baby died at the City hospital Wednesday night after suffering for 10 days with pneumonia.

        The infant was admitted to the hospital 10 days ago owing to the seriousness of its condition.

        The parents survive.

*Submitter's Note:  This last digit was not clear on my copy of this obituary.  It could possibly be an eight or a  nine.

 

Cariens, Rachael Cariens, nee Schell

Mrs. Rachel [sic] Cariens

        Rachael Schell daughter of Henry and Mary Schell was born in Monroe county, Ohio, August 21, 1846.  She was the third child in a family of twelve* children, of whom John, Hiram, Samuel, Jacob, Thomas, George and Mrs. Douglas Vaughn are still living.

        She moved with her parents to Wayne county, Ill., in 1853 where she met and married Edgar P. Cariens, October 10th,** 1870.  To this union six children were born; three of whom died in infancy.  A. "Rate" and Jesse and Mrs. Louis Cates survive their mother.  The husband died in 1905.  Since that time she has had live with her Edgar Cariens, a grandson, Earl Schell and Cloyd Withrow, all of whom she learned to love almost as her own.  The last five years her daughter Mrs. Louis Cates and family had made their home with her.

        Aunt Rachael, as we all called her, departed this life Dec. 26th, 1923 at the age of 77 years, 4 months and 5 days.  She was sick only about thirty-six hours.  Besides her children she leaves to mourn their loss, six brothers, one sister, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of neighbors and friends.

        Aunt Rachael will be greatly missed in her home community.  She was a kind neighbor and was always glad to help whenever it was possible for her to do so.  Many will remember her for her kind deeds.  And even though she is gone a fond memory of her lingers still.

        Funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon by Eld. W. D. Crippin.  Interment is in the Cariens cemetery.

Christman, Samuel Christman

Samuel Christman, a very highly respected citizen, died of pneumonia at his home on Maple avenue, February 16, 1923, aged 59 years, 8 months and 19 days.  He was born near Woodsfield, Ohio on May 27, 1863, the son of Lewis and Mary Christman. He was united in holy bonds of matrimony September 8, 1887, with Miss Maude Montgomery, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Montgomery. To this union four children were born - - Adda, Ronald, William and Paul, who with the mother survive.

Samuel Christman, who was well known as a model citizen, was baptized by Elder W. W. Otey, formerly of Beallsville, Ohio, and became a member of the Church of Christ in August 1893, and lived a faithful christian life until called to the better world.

Besides the widow and children, four brothers and two sisters are let to mourn his loss as follows: Andrew, Lewis, Henry and William; Mrs. Barbara Diehl of Clinton, Missouri, and Mrs. Anna  Ricer.

The funeral, conducted by his former pastor, Elder D. W. Harkins of Columbus, Ohio took place from the Woodsfield Church of Christ last Monday afternoon and was largely attended by relatives and friends. Interment in Oaklawn cemetery. The widow and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of many friends, and the community at large realizes that one of our very best citizens has passed to the great beyond.

 

Cumpson, Garrett Cumpson

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, August 16, 1923

       Mrs. Nancy Cumpson of Center street received word Tuesday that her son, Garrett Cumpson of Cuyahoga Falls, had died on Monday from sunstroke.

       His body will be brought here to-day (Wednesday) and taken to the home of his mother where funeral services will be held on Thursday. This makes the sixth child that she has had to lay away. Her husband passed to the Great Beyond several years ago.

 

Denney, Michael Denney

        DENNY* -- Michael Denny* of Rose Hill died at Ottumwa Thursday, August 9, 1923, at 8:45 p.m. of nephritis, aged 58** years.  Funeral at St. Mary's Catholic church in Oskaloosa, Sunday, August 12, at 2:00 p.m.  Interment at Wymore cemetery.

        * Census records and his tombstone spell the name DENNEY.

        ** Age 58 does not agree with his tombstone at the Wymore Cemetery which shows the birth year as 1858.

 

Fearing, William Edward Fearing

DIES     OF    INJURIES

        Injuries received in a fall, four weeks ago when he fractured his hip, caused the death of William Edward Fearing, 81, retired attorney, at the home of his son, Frank T. Fearing, 594 Oak st. Wednesday.

        Mr. Fearing was a veteran of the Civil War during which he served as a member of the 113th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  He was a member of the Broad Street M. E. Church and Wells Post G. A. R.

        He also leaves one daughter, Mrs. Fred Weiner [sic–Wiener] of Detroit, three other sons, Rodifer and Cassius Fearing of Columbus and William Fearing of Cleveland, one brother in Sandusky and two sisters.

        Funeral arrangements are in charge of Denton, Donaldson and Hughes.  Burial in Green Lawn.

*Submitter’s Note: His son Steven’s death records have the name spelled as WEINER, but the 1920 census, World War I Draft Registration Cards, the U.S. City Directory and Florida Death Index, 1877-1998 spell it WIENER.

        Funeral services for William Edward Fearing, 81, retired attorney, who died Wednesday at the home of his son, Frank T. Fearing of 594 Oak st., will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Denton, Donaldson & Hughes Mortuary, 318 E. Town st.  Burial in Green Lawn Cemetery.

    Amelia Magdalina Friday died November 18, 1923, aged 72 years; daughter of Jacob and Margaretha Ketterer Egger. She was born March 19, 1851.  Surviving are her children: Jacob, Mrs. Mary Friday Dixon, Mrs. Barbara Friday Steed, Albert, Solomon and Samuel Friday. Also surviving are her brothers, George, William and Herman Egger, sisters, Lucetta, Barbara and Matilda Friday.

 

Hall, Sylvester Hall

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, August 16, 1923

       Sylvester Hall, aged 37 years, died at his home on Marietta street, Sunday evening, August 13.

       Deceased leaves a wife, two brothers, one sister and his parents.

       The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. this (Wednesday) afternoon conducted by Rev. George L. Davis of the M. E. church. The body will be laid in Oaklawn cemetery, in charge of W. P. Galbraith.

       Deceased was well known to many in Woodsfield, Barnesville, and Wheeling and his untimely death is deeply regretted. His parents and family have the sympathy of the entire community.

 

Harper, Nelson T. Harper

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, September 20, 1923

       Nelson T. Harper, one of Monroe county’s most highly respected citizens, died at his home near Malaga, Friday night, September 14th, aged 83 years, after an illness of several years incident to old age.

       The funeral took place last Sunday afternoon and was very largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near. The services were conducted by Evangelist J. A. Hines and W. W. Thornberry.

       Mr. Harper is survived by the following children: D. B. and Belle Harper of the home; James O. and Ernest J. Harper of Malaga; Clarence of Barnesville and Mrs. D. C. Hardesty of St. Clairsville; also 32 grand children and 32 great grand children, all of whom have the sincere sympathy of many friends. Interment in Bush cemetery.

 

Hartshorn, Alga E. Hartshorn

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, July 5, 1923

       Miss Alga E. Hartshorn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hartshorn of Hartshorn Ridge, who recently fell from a cherry tree, broke a leg and received other injuries, died from the effects of same on June 25th, age about 35 years.

       She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hartshorn who have the sincere sympathy of many friends.

       Interment at Hartshorn Ridge.

 

Hayes, Mrs. L. M. Hayes

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, May 17, 1923

       The remains of Mrs. L. M. Hayes, who died at her home in Barberton, Ohio, Friday, May 11th, were brought to the home of her brother-in-law, R. W. Applegate last Monday evening and laid to rest in the Applegate lot in Oaklawn cemetery Tuesday afternoon following services conducted by Rev. S. P. Loyd.

       Deceased was the mother of Mrs. George A. Wiswell, well remembered here as Miss Sylvia A. Cannon. She was about 48 years old and not long ago had a stroke of paralysis that resulted in her death.

Herlan, Sarah C. Herlan, nee McCoy

LONG     ILLNESS     PROVES      FATAL

        Mrs. Sarah C. Herlan, 73 widow of the late Jacob G. Herlan, life-long resident of Washington county, died at her home on Eight Mile on Sunday.  She had been ill for some time of stomach trouble, complicated by leakage of the heart, and for the past few weeks her condition ahd been serious.

        Mrs. Herlan was born in the community in which she died, on March 7, 1850, and when a young woman was united in marriage with Mr. Herlan.  Nine childen were born to them:  Frank Herlan, who died in infancy, and the following eight daughters, all of whom survive:  Mrs. Mary Day, Marietta; Mrs. Sherman Dye and Mrs. Chris Morningstar, Moss Run; Mrs. Robert Hughes, Eureka, W. Va.; Mrs. Joseph Henderhan, Marietta, and Mrs. Frank Barth, Mrs. Jacob Close and Mrs. Cleveland Ritchey, all of Eight Mile.

        Funeral services, in charge of Doudna & McClure, will be held at the Beech Grove Presbyterian Church on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with burial in the churchyard at that place.

 

Jarboe, Katie Jarboe, nee Morris

        Mrs. Katie Jarboe, wife of Vester Jarboe died Wednesday morning, August 22, after an illness of several years.  She leaves her husband; three sons and one daughter and her aged mother, Mrs. Jane Mource.* The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Blue Rim church.

* Submitter’s Notes:  Her mother was Jane MORRIS not Mource, actually Rachel "Jane."

Koehler, Charles Koehler

       Another of Monroe county’s most highly respected citizens in the person of Charles Koehler who passed away at his home on Rich Fork on

Sunday morning, as a result from a stroke of paralysis some three years ago.

       He was a brother of W____Koehler, Mrs. William Neuhart and Mrs. James L. Adams of Woodsfield

       He leaves three sons and a number of other relatives.

The funeral took place Tuesday morning. Interment at ____ Ridge.

 

Lallathin, Mrs. Chris Lallathin

       Mrs. Chris Lallathin, one of Antioch’s most highly respected citizens, died June 30th, of heart trouble.

       She leaves, besides a devoted husband and many other relatives and friends, the following children: Amos and Herman of Woodsfield, John of Chicago and Miles and Elizabeth of the home.

       We have no further particulars on going to press Tuesday evening, but will give further particulars later.

        Again the white-winged messenger of death from the Celestial City, who so often and uninvited has made its way into our midst and taken away a loved one, visited our community and claimed for its victim, Marjorene, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Leisure.*  Marjorene was one year and six days old, and had been ill only a short time from a severe cold.  Her death was sudden and unexpected by the parents, yet in the midst of life we are in death.  The funeral was held at Mt. Tabor by Rev. Gray.

*Submitter’s Note: This name is seen spelled as both LEISURE and LEASURE.  It is LEASURE in Bert’s obituary and on his headstone.

 

Lude, Jacob Lude

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, February 1, 1923

       Jacob Lude, a very highly respected citizen, died suddenly at his home on Route 3 Clarington, Ohio, January 25, 1923.

       He was stricken with paralysis on August 2, 1922, and had been almost helpless since that time. While his death was not entirely expected it came as a shock to the entire community.

       He was born July 19, 1862, being at the time of his death 60 years 6 months and 6 days old.

       He united with the Evangelical Luthern church in his sixteenth year, and was a consistent member until his death.

       He was married to Emma Wichterman, October 9, 1888.

He is survived by his widow and the following children: Adda M., Albert L., and Edwin Lude, Mrs. Earl Burkhalter, Mrs. Andrew Foshey, and Mrs. Wesley Dierkes. Also four granddaughters, two brothers, Michael of Sardis and C. W. of Ravenna, and one sister, Mrs. Agnes Coulter of Pittsburgh, and a host of other relatives and friends. His eldest brother, Chris, preceded him in death January 1, 1923.

The funeral was held Sunday forenoon. Interment in the St. James cemetery. Rev. A. E. Kitterer of Powhatan conducted the services.

       The funeral of the infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Rodger Masters was held from the residence Sunday at 4:00 o’clock by Rev. J. J. Srodes with interment at Oaklawn cemetery.

 

McCammon, Robert Homer McCammon

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, March 8, 1923

       Robert Homer McCammon, son of Mrs. Cora McCammon, whose home is near Buchanan, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 28th. He was 26 years of age and is survived by two sisters and three brothers.

       The funeral services were conducted at the Buchanan church by pastor, John Jay Srodes.

       Interment in Buchanan cemetery.

       Mrs. McCammon and family have the sincere sympathy of many friends.

 

Morris, George S. Morris

George S. Morris aged 73, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Thrasher, 1903 Alexander Avenue, Wednesday afternoon.  He is survived by his wife, four sons, John and James Morris, Owensboro; Sylvester and Henry Morris, Tell City, Ind., and three daughters, Mrs. Walter Rowley, Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Margaret Cox and Mrs. Charles Thrasher, Owensboro.  The funeral will be conducted from the residence at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon with interment in Elmwood cemetery.

Morris, Helen Morris nee Jones

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, September 6, 1923

       Relatives at Woodsfield received a message stating that Mrs. Helen Morris, widow of the late Major W. T. Morris, died at her home in Columbus, Tuesday morning, September 4th, from ailments incident to old age as she was about 88 years old.

       She leaves besides other relatives, one brother and two sisters in Woodsfield—Delbert and Miss Frances and Bert Jones.

       As Major and Mrs. Morris resided here during the earlier part of their lives they have many Woodsfield friends to sympathize with members of the family who survive. We hope to be able to give further particulars later.

       The funeral will take place to-day (Thursday).

          Morris, Martha, widow of Thomas Morris died Wednesday, survived by son, Norval and daughter Mrs. W. D. Brown.  Buried Olive.

       Obadiah Nalley, aged 70 years, died very suddenly last Saturday night at his home near Woodsfield. He had been in his usual and had been in Woodsfield during the day. Returning home in the evening about 5:00 o’clock he was taken with a severe pain in his side, which passed to his head, causing death in a very short time.

       He leaves a wife and several children.

       The funeral was held from the Christian church Tuesday at 1:30 P.M. Interment in Oak Lawn cemetery with Bauer & Willison in charge.

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, May 31, 1923

       Mountain Lake Park, Md., May 29—Tragedy stalked in the paths here today and a result Mr. Mary O’Connor, aged 94, and her three grown daughters, who arrived this morning for a summer vacation, are dead.

       The four met death when burning leaves ignited accumulated gas in the cottage when the explosion occupied by Mrs. O’Connor. The three daughters were some distance from the cottage when the explosion occurred. When they reached the building, it was a mass of flames. Disregarding their own safety the daughters rushed into the cottage in an attempt to rescue their mother. They never came out.

       The dead beside Mrs. O’Conner, who lived in Clarksburg, W. Va. are: Miss Kate 0’Connor, Clarksburg, Mrs. Jet Grannon, Fairmont, W. Va, Mrs. Mary E. Rooney, Clarksburg.

       When rescuers removed the four bodies from the debris late today $2000 in gold was found hidden in a chimney. It was turned over to the authorities.

       Several other cottages near the one occupied by the victims also were destroyed.

DEATH   OF   MISS   OLDHAM

TOPEKAN   DIES   FOLLOWING   OPERATION   FOR   REMOVAL   OF   TONSILS

        Miss Ada Grace Oldham, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Oldham, 1032 Lime street, died this morning at the home of her parents following an operation Monday in which her tonsils were removed.  Miss Oldham was employed by the Topeka Tent & Awning company.

        She is survived by two brothers, Steven and Cecil Oldham, and one sister, Florence Oldham.

        Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

 

Payne, Eliza Payne nee Kindall

       Mrs. Eliza Payne, whose home was about three miles north of Graysville, died Thursday, November 1st, aged 21 years and 7 months. She leaves to mourn her loss, a devoted husband, two darling children, one aged three years, the other 18 months her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Kindall of Jackson Ridge.

       The funeral, with services in charge of Elder C. L. Mellott and J. G. Poulton of Graysville serving as funeral director, was held last Friday. Interment in the Plainview cemetery.

       The bereaved husband, parents and children have the sympathy of many friends.

 

Poulton, Mrs. M. B. Poulton

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, March 8, 1923

Mrs. M. B. Poulton, wife of Michael B. Poulton of Kent, Ohio, well and favorably known at this place, died in the home in that city Friday, February 23d aged 69 years. She had been suffering for some time with paralysis which resulted in her death.

       Her remains were brought to Woodsfield Sunday evening.

       The funeral was held at St. Sylvester’s Catholic church Monday morning at 9:00 o’clock with Rev. Father Seeber in charge. Interment in the Catholic cemetery.

       The husband and family have the sympathy of many friends.

 

Pratt, Anna Pratt, nee Cronin

EAGLEVILLE      WOMAN      DIES

        Mrs. Anna Pratt died at her home in Eagleville, Thursday about 3 p.m., at the age of 69.  Death came as the result of a stroke of paralysis suffered about a year ago.

        Funeral services will be held at the late home Sunday at 2 p.m. with burial at Eagleville.

       The funeral of the late Jacob Reinherr took place Wednesday afternoon of last week and was well attended. The remains awaiting the arrival of his daughter, Mrs. Alfred Okey of Monmouth, Illinois, were not laid to rest in Oaklawn cemetery until Thursday morning at 10:00 o’clock when his pastor, Rev. Joseph Reinicke, the Masonic and I. O. O. F. Lodges again took part in the final ceremonies before laying a devoted brother to rest.

       Mr. Reinherr was born at Kussel in Bavaria, Germany, on July 29th, 1842, and was therefore 81 years old on last July 29th. He came to America with his parents when but seven years of age and settled with them at New Matamoras, Ohio, where he received his religious training in the Evangelical church and his common school education. Later in life he learned the baker’s trade and worked at Marietta, Pittsburgh, Wheeling, Parkersburg, Cambridge, Columbus and other cities before locating here. Just before entering business in Woodsfield he was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Weihe of Pittsburgh on March 30, 1869, who with four children, survive him, one son, Carl, having preceded his father in death. The surviving children are as follows: Mrs. Alfred Okey of Monmouth, Ills.; William H. Reinherr of Pittsburgh, Pa., Miss Anna of the home, and Mrs. W. F. Copeland of Athens, Ohio.

       Mr. Reinherr was a great secret society man as well as a faithful church member. He was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason, May 7, 1868, was a past master, had done much in degree work, represented his district at Grand Lodge and could repeat all the obligations in the Blue Lodge before his death. He was also a past grand in the Odd Fellows Lodge and had served many years on the degree staff, and was one of its best workers. He was also a Grand Lodge representative on several occasions and was identified with the Odd Fellows Encampment and the Rebekahs, where he was equally attentive to the duties incumbent upon him.

       Among relatives from a distance at the funeral were Mrs. Alfred Okey of Monmouth, Ills.; Will H. Reinherr of Pittsburg; Elizabeth Reinherr of Wheeling; Mrs. Elizabeth Ring of Rings Mill, Ohio; Mrs. J. S. Travis and son Roy and Miss Ida Buegel of Brownsville, Ohio.

       The floral offerings were many and beautiful, indicating the high esteem in which he was held.

       Jacob Reinherr, probably Monroe county’s oldest Master Mason and Oddfellow, died at his home on Sycamore street last Monday morning after a long illness, the result of old age.

       The funeral took place this (Wednesday) afternoon from the home, with his pastor, Rev. Joseph Reinicke in charge, and was well attended.

       He was laid to rest with ceremonies of the Masonic Lodge, the Independent order of Odd Fellows also paying respect in a similar manner to a brother who had ever proven faithful to these lodges as well as to his church, family and friends.

       Bauer & Willison served as funeral directors.

       Mr, Reinherr and her family have the sincere sympathy of many friends.

 

Richardson, Mary Ellen (Ella) Richardson

Sentinel, Monroe County, Ohio dated May 3, 1923

       Mrs. Ella Richardson passed away last Saturday morning from results of a fall about two weeks ago. Funeral from the home on Tuesday morning, her pastor, Rev. C.F. Walters in charge, with interment in the Sardis cemetery. She leaves five children: Mrs. S. C. Griffith, of Worthington; Edgar and Eugene, of Wheeling and Hastings W.Va. respectively; Mrs. W. F. Maloney, of Chicago; and Miss Amy of the home. She was a member of the M.E. church, and lived a beautiful Chistian life. Her many relatives and friends will cherish a loving memory of one so loyal and devoted. In addition to her immediate family, the out of town relatives at her funeral were her tow sisters, Misses Lou and Adah Wylie, of Wheeling; Mrs. Mary Griffith, of Ferguson, Ky.; and several grandchildren from Hastings, WVa.

 

Ripley, Thomas Ripley

       Thomas Ripley, one of Woodsfield’s most highly respected retired citizens, died at his home on High street, Saturday morning, May 12th, at 11:15, following a brief illness from ailments incident to old age.

       Mr. Ripley was born at Alma, W. Va., on August 13th, 1843, and was therefore 79 years, 8 months and 9 days old at the time of his death. He joined the United Brethern church when 20 years old and had lived consistenly the Christian life until his death.

       He was first married to Miss Phoebe Jane Meredith on October 12th, 1871. To this union three children were born, who are still living and attended his funeral.

       Mrs. James (Thad) Hawkins of Jackson Ridge, J. C. Ripley of Detroit Michigan and C. R. Ripley of Middlebourne, W. Va. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Nancy Jones of Hagerstown, Pa., who was present at the funeral, which was in charge of Ernest Dougherty of the Woodsfield Undertaking company.

       Thomas Ripley’s second marriage was to Miss Nancy Hart on May 7th, 1899. She survives him as a widow who has been a faithful and painstaking wife during the past 24 years.

       Funeral services were held Monday evening at the home by Elder C. L. Mellott and were attended by many neighbors and friends in addition to relatives above mentioned.

       The remains were taken Tuesday in the Woodsfield Undertaking company’s hearse to Alma, W. Va., where final services were held before interment in the family lot.

       Among relatives in attendance from a distance were John Hart, of Cambridge, a brother of the bereaved widow, and his wife.

       The relatives who survive have the sincere sympathy of many friends.

 

Shrody, John Shrody

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, November 8, 1923

       John Shrody died of hardening of the liver at his home near Buchanan Station last Sunday morning at 7:00 o’clock, after a long illness, aged 67 years.

       He leaves a devoted wife, one son, Dora, and one daughter, May.

       The funeral, with Rev. J. J. Srodes as minister and Bauer & Willison as funeral directors took place Tuesday at 1:00 o’clock p.m. Interment in the Buchanan cemetery.

       Mr. Shrody had many friends wherever known, who are in sympathy with the bereaved family.

       Friend to mankind, rest in peace.

 

Smith, William Smith

       While the patriotic people were mourning the loss of a great president, Mr. William Smith, Senior, was called in death—causing his many friends in Woodsfield additional grief of a near nature.

       William Smith was born in Center township, near Buchanan church on August 11, 1848, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B. H. Williams, at 4:30 o’clock in the afternoon. Had he lived until August 11th, the anniversary of his birth he would have been seventy-five years of age.

       In 1868 he was married to Miss Mary Borner and with the exception of a few months of their early married life spent in Pittsburgh, they always resided in Woodsfield, where their friends included the entire citizenship.

       Of the family born to them, six children are still living: They are Mrs. H. E. Wilcox of Central City, Iowa; Harry C. Smith of Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. E. G. Reisinger of South Heights, Pa.; W. B. Smith, Eugene Smith and Mrs. B. H. Williams, all of Woodsfield.

       Mr. Smith was the last survivor of a large family, all of whom were very highly respected.

       His wife passed to her reward July 6, 1904.

       From early youth, Mr. Smith was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and his conscientious rectitude is a valued heritage left to his family and friends.

       The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon and Saturday with services conducted at his late home by Rev. George L. Davis. Interment in the family lot in Oaklawn cemetery.

       Neighbor and friend of priceless worth, farewell.

 

Steed, Celestia Steed

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, November 1, 1923

       Mrs. Celestia J. Steed, widow of Benjamin Steed, who passed to his eternal reward Oct. 6th died at her home in this place Tuesday morning, Oct. 30th, aged 73 years last May.

       The funeral will be held next Friday afternoon at 2:00 from the home and will be in charge of Rev. Reinicke as minister and Bauer & Willison as undertakers.

 

Strickling, Alex S. Strickling

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, March 8, 1923

       Alex S. Strickling, a very highly respected citizen died at his home west of Lewisville last Monday morning after a long illness from Bright’s disease.

       He leaves a wife and seven sons.

       The funeral will take place this (Wednesday) afternoon at 2:00 p.m. from the Woodsfield Church of Christ after which his remains will be laid to rest in Oaklawn cemetery.

       The bereaved family have the sympathy of many friends. We hope to be able to give a full account of the death of this exemplary citizen in the near future.

 

Suter, Samuel M.

Sentinel, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated September 6, 1923

       S. M. Suter, formerly of this place, passed away at the home of his son Roy, near Sistersville., August 28. He was a life-long member of the M.E. church and was always loyal to its doctrines. Services were held in the M.E. church at this place on the following Thursday by Rev. Bernard Gibbs, of Sistersville, with interment in the local cemetery, beside his wife and infant child. He leaves four sons and many other relatives and friends.

 

Truter, Louise Truter

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, March 8, 1923

       Mrs. Louise Truter of Pittsburgh, a sister of Mrs. Jacob Reinherr of Woodsfield, died March 1st, of pneumonia, aged 79 years.

       She was visited by her niece Miss Anna Reinherr but a very few days before her death. Mrs. Truter was a lady of many fine qualities and will be remembered by the people of Woodsfield and Brownsville as a frequent summer guest at the Reinherr home in this place.

       The funeral was held Sunday at the home of her son, Dr. C. W. Truter in Pittsburgh.

Wagner, E. T. Wagner

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, December 13, 1923

       Capt. E. T. Wagner, killed at Houston, Texas, Sunday, when the wing of a training aeroplane in which he was traveling collapsed, was an intimate friend of Herbert R. Mooney. Mr. Mooney was in training camp.

 

Walton, Richard K. Walton

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, March 8, 1923

       Ex-Probate Judge Richard K. Walton, father of Ex-Mayor W. V. Walton of Columbus, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emma V. Ekstrand, at 3704 West 82nd street, Chicago, on February 9th, 1923, aged 87 years.

       Mr. Walton was a native of Monroe county, served two terms as probate judge of Monroe county and has many friends here among the older citizens; who will sincerely regret to learn of his death.

       Mr. Walton was laid to rest by the side of his wife, Julia A. Walton, who preceded him in death two years ago, and they are buried in the beautiful Oakwood cemetery in Chicago.

 

Watson, Helen Watson, nee Hoops

        WATSON -- Mrs. Helen, nee Hoops, age 33 years, beloved wife of C. H. Watson, passed away April 18.  Funeral April 21, 10 a.m.  Friends may call Thursday and Friday evenings at 740 W. 31st.  Funeral and burial private.

 

Whitacre, Julia Ann Whitacre, nee Winland  -- Julia A Whitacre was born Jan. 7, 1841; died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Asher Gray, near Sycamore Valley, Ohio April 22, 1923.  She was the last of a family of fifteen children.  About the year 1957 she married to Sydnor Whitacre, who died Jan. 2 1887.  [Note the difference in the death date of Sydnor.]  Eleven children were born to this union, five boys and six girls.  Two sons and one daughter preceded her in death.  Many years ago she was baptized into the church of Christ at Rich Fork, by Bro. N.W. Cramblett, and ever after lived an earnest Christian life.  She leaves to mourn her departure, three sons, five daughters, thirty-eight grandchildren and fifth-one great-grandchildren, beside a host of friends and neighbors.

       The writer conducted the funeral services at the church of Christ in Graysville, Ohio,  April 24.  Representatives of eight different congregations were in the audience, besides neighbors and friends, who filled the house to overflowing.

       How sweet to die,

       With Jesus nigh.

       The rock of our salvation.

 

Workman, D. G. Workman

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, April 5, 1923

       D. G. Workman, whose home is between Beallsville and Jerusalem, died Sunday morning. He had been suffering for two weeks from bladder trouble, was not thought to be dangerously ill.

       The funeral took place at the Presbyterian church at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday and was conducted by Rev. William Parsons of Woodsfield.

       Mr. Workman was about 54 years old, an officer in the Beallsville Presbyterian church, Superintendent of the Sunday school and prominent in the welfare work of his community.

    George Young, a highly respected citizen of Woodsfield, died at the home of J. H. Christy Sunday morning, March 25th, at 7:11, aged 77 years, 11 months and 15 days, following an illness from pleurisy.
    The funeral, in charge of Reverend S. P. Loyd of the M. E. Church, took place Monday, with interment in Oaklawn cemetery.
    Mr. Young, whose wife preceded him to the great beyond, was a man of many good qualities, and had many friends who were made sad by his death.
