        NEWTON   FALLS -- Mrs. Alice Ann Baker, 44, of 222 Medley Ave., died of a heart ailment at 7:10 a.m. Saturday in Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital.

        Mrs. Baker was born Jan. 15, 1933, in East Liverpool, a daughter of John N. and Margaret Runion Williams, coming here 22 years ago from Sebring.  She was a cook for Vin and Barb's Restaurant here.

        Besides her husband, Glenn L., whom she married in 1951, she leaves her parents of Sebring; two daughters, Mrs. Marguerite G.* Sweeney of Newton Falls, and Miss Phyllis Ann at home; two sons, John and Glenn, both at home; four sisters, Mrs. Marilyn Smith and Mrs. Mary Garnes, both of Alliance, Mrs. Linda Euanitcha [sic--Evanitcka] of Deerfield, and Mrs. Alma Morrison of Sebring; two brothers, John A. Williams of Alliance and James Williams of Sebring, and a grandson.

        Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the James Funeral Home where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Baker, Richard L. Baker

        ELYRIA -- Richard L. Baker, 54, former resident of Marietta, died last night in Elyria Memorial Hospital after a three-week illness.

        He was born June 13, 1923 at Cambridge, and had made his home in Elyria since 1972.  He had been employed by the Basic Packaging Co. at Avon Lake.

        Survivors include his wife of four years, Mary L. Baker; four sons, Richard Jr., and Steven R. Baker, both of Elyria, Robert L. Baker, at home, and Richard Farnsworth of Coal Run; a daughter, Mrs. Sam (Shirley) Dennis of Elyria; seven grandchildren; a brother, Earl Baker of Illinois; two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Delorce) Worstell and Mrs. Brady (Betty) Hendershot, both of Lower Salem.

        Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Garland Funeral Home, 851 Park Ave., Amherst.  The Rev. Donald Lammers will officiate with burial to follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Lorain.

        Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m.

 

Betts, Bessie Betts, nee Powell

BARNESVILLE--Mrs. Bessie Betts, 93, of Barnesville, died Friday at 9:45 P.M. at Cambridge Health Care Center following a long illness.

         Born Sept. 20. 1884, in Calais, she was the daughter of the late John and Charlotte Morris Powell. She was a member of First Christian Church in Barnesville. Her husband, William, preceded her in 1955.

         She leaves two sons, Clifford of Columbus and Olie of Cuyahoga Falls; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

         Calling hours are Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at Campbell-Funeral Home. Services will be held Monday at 1:30 at the funeral home with the Rev. William Worcester officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Cemetery, Barnesville.

 

Blume, Helen M. Blume, nee Elliott

        BLUME, Helen M., age 67, of 552 Pandora Dr. Mad River Twp. passed away Tuesday at Miami Valley Hospital.  Survived by husband Warren J., 2 sisters Mildred Smeeks of West Va., Anna Powell of Cuyahoga Falls, O., 1 brother Dr. Phillip Elliott of Zanesville, O. 2 grandchildren.  She was a member of the Women's Of The Moose, Dayton, Chapter No. 9 and the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.

       Funeral services 1 pm Friday from the Ruttencutter Funeral Home at the time of service.  Services in care of Tobias Funeral Home, Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton Xenia Rd.

Briggs, Charles Edward Briggs III

        Charles Edward Briggs III, two-month-old son of Charles Edward and Wanda Jean Hudson Briggs Jr.; Woodsfield Route 4, died early Friday morning, January 21, 1977, at home.  He was born Nov. 13, 1976, at Bellaire.

        Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Katherine Elizabeth of the home; the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edward Briggs Sr., Woodsfield, and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Hudson of Barnesville; great-grandparents, John Briggs of Jacobsburg; Mrs. Jennie Drake, West Lafayette, and Mrs. Margaret Heck of West Liberty, Ky.

        Services were held Monday at the Bauer and Turner Funeral Home in Woodsfield with burial in Powhatan Cemetery, Powhatan Point.

 

Briggs, Wilber E. Briggs

Wilber E. Briggs, 49, of New Concord, Route 1, died Wednesday night, May 25, 1977, of an apparent heart attack at the Clow Pipe Plant, Coshocton, Ohio. Born December 30, 1927 on Woodsfield Route 1, he was a son of the late Isaac and Fay Agin Briggs. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Piatt Briggs; one son, Richard Briggs, of West Lafayette, Ohio; one daughter, Miss Joyce Briggs, of West Lafayette; one brother, Ransom Briggs, of Ashland; one sister, Mrs. John Piatt, of Woodsfield, Route 1, and one grandson. Friends were received at the Bauer and Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, on Friday. Services were held in their Chapel on saturday afternoon at four o'clock with the Rev. Thos. W. Clark officiating. Burial was in the Moffette Cemetery on Woodsfield Cemetery Route 1

 

Brown, Thurman R. Brown

Retired Sheriff Brown dies; service Thursday

        Former County Sheriff Thurman R. Brown, 81, of 320 Dorchester St., died Sunday at the Good Shepherd Home after a long illness.

        He was elected sheriff in January 1956, retired in January 1969.  He had served as city policeman from 1925 until Jan. 1, 1956.

        Mr. Brown was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Retired Police Association and the national Sheriffs' Association.

        The son of E.W. and Margaret Drake Brown, he was born in Monroe County, March 26, 1895.  He lived most of his life in Ashland County.

        On Oct. 28, 1938, he was married to Twila Dennison Brown, who survives.

        Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Capps of Mogadore; three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Thelma Latimer of Mansfield; and three brothers, Wilbur of Ashland, Lawrence of Greenwich and Clinton of Miami, Fla.

        Services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. George Sheets officiating.  Burial will be in Savannah Cemetery.

        Friends may call Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home where the Fraternal Order of Police will hold services at 9.

 

Brown, Virgil Brown

        Virgil Brown, 64, Woodsfield Rt. 3, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Barnesville Hospital.

        He was a retired construction worker.

        Born Dec. 11,1912, in Monroe County, he was the son of Matthew and Alice Leach Brown.

        Survivors include his wife, Mary Dunn Brown; four sons, Richard, Bill, Ted and Larry, all of Woodsfield; five daughters, Mrs. Shirley Parks, Ashland; Mrs. Judy Smith, Mrs. Luella Ricer, Mrs. Kathy Russell and Miss Linda Brown, all of Woodsfield; three sisters, Mae Mallett, Lewisville; Dessie Okey, Woodsfield and Anna Leasure of Sarahsville.  There are 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

        Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Gardner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.  Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

 

Buchanan, Marjorie E. Buchanan, nee Leach

        Services for Mrs. Marjorie E. Buchanan, 52, were held Thursday, March 31st at 1 P.M. at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home.  Interment was made in Friendship Cemetery at Lewisville.

        Mrs. Buchanan died Monday afternoon, March 28th at her home.  She was born December 10, 1924 at Barnesville, and was a member of the First Christian Church there.

        Surviving are her husband, William; two daughters, Mrs. William (Joan) Schwall, Woodsfield, Lori Lynn of the home; one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Whitsell, Barnesville; and two brothers, Everett Leach and Earl Leach, both of Barnesville.

Carpenter, Larry F. Carpenter

       Larry F. Carpenter, 25, of West Lafayette but a native of the Summerfield community, was electrocuted about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 11) when the rig he was operating came in contact with high tension wires.

       Carpenter, a son of Elvin and Martha Bates Carpenter, who lived for a number of years in Summerfield, but now of West Lafayette route, was working for Wills Creek Energy Co. near the Coshocton County Home. Officials say he apparently died instantly and his body was found beside the rig by two companions, Thomas T. Ungurean and Jerry B. Jones. The rigs tires were burning and sparks were about the area.

       The sheriff’s department investigated and an Ohio Power crew and the South Tuscarawas fire department were called to the scene before the body was removed.

       Carpenter was born March 29, 1952 in Noble County, the son of Elvin and Martha Bates Carpenter, West Lafayette, route 1 and was a graduate of Ridgewood high school class of 1971.

       In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. William (Debbie) Powell, West Lafayette and Mrs. Kathy Norman of California.; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Carpenter, West Lafayette, and Mrs. Anna Bates, Summerfield.

       Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday from Given funeral home in West Lafayette with the Rev. Bruce Reynolds officiating.

       Interment was made in the Fairfield cemetery at West Lafayette.

 

Carpenter, Virgil L. Carpenter

        CAMBRIDGE, ILL.--Virgil L. Carpenter, 56, of Andover, ILL., husband of Mrs. Helen Stillion Carpenter, a former Cambridge resident, died at 6 A.M. Friday (Oct. 21, 1977) at his home.

         Born Feb 7, 1921 in Calais, he was a son of Mrs. Mary Carpenter and the late William Carpenter. He was a veteran of World War II in the European theater and received a bronze and silver star and a presidential citation for his service at the Battle of the Bulge in Normandy.

         Mr. Carpenter was a member of American Ordinance Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Wilmington, ILL.        

         He was employed by the U.S. government for 35 years and had worked as safety engineer at Rock Island Arsenal since 1973.

         On Aug. 9, 1941 he married Helen Stillion.

         Mr. Carpenter leaves in addition to his wife and mother; one daughter, Mrs. Don (Judith) McGhee of Bolingbrook, ILL.; two sons, Kenneth of Andover and Daniel of Cambridge, ILL.; one grandson; one brother, Charles of St. Simons Island, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Frances) Gauer of Rootstown; and several nieces and nephews.

         He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Lester.

         Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 P.M. Saturday at Stackhouse Schemerman Funeral Home, Cambridge, ILL.

         The body will then be transferred to Shorts Funeral Home in Ravenna where friends may call Monday from 6 to 9 P.M.

         Services will be held at Shorts at 10 A.M. Tuesday. Burial will be Homeland Cemetery, Rootstown.

Man  Loses

Life's  Fight

        Greg Champion, 19, the Bergholz man who was shot in the head late Friday died Sunday night at 9 at St. John Medical Center.

        Jefferson County sheriff's deputies are holding William J. Robinson, 29, also of Bergholz in connection with the shooting which deputies said happened in Mousie's Bar in Wolf Run about 11:40 p.m. Friday.

        Deputies were called to the bar, just outside East Springfield, shortly after the shooting.  Robinson was arrested late Friday.  Deputies said determination of charges cannot be made until the courthouse opens Tuesday.  County offices are closed today in honor of Martin Luther King.

        Champion was taken to the hospital by the East Springfield Ambulance Service.  He remained in critical condition throughout the weekend before he died.

        He was an employe of the Jensie Mine, Division of North American Coal Co. and was a graduate of Carrollton High School.

        Surviving are his widow, the former Pamela Smith, whom he married July 19, 1975; a daughter, Melinda Jo, at home; his parents Charles Robert and Mary DeNoon Champion of RD 1, Bergholz; a sister, Mrs. Raymond (Cheryl) Taylor of Carrollton; two brothers, Robert Jr. of Salineville, and Todd of RD 1, Bergholz; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Roy (Bertha) DeNoon Higgins of Richmond.

        He was born May 21, 1957, in Canton.

        Friends may call at the Everhart Funeral Home from noon-9 p.m. Wednesday; the family will be present from 2-4 and  7-9 p.m.; services there 2 p.m. Wednesday;* the Rev. Larry Iden,  Bergholz Cemetery.

*Submitter's Note:  More likely the service was on Thursday since calling hours lasted until 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Christman, Samuel S. Christman

        Samuel S. Christman, 91, Route 1, Bethesda, died Friday evening at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Eva Brownfield.  He was born March 8, 1886, in Monroe County, son of the late John and Eva Phalzgraph Christman.

        He was a retired farmer and member of Lutheran Middle Church.  His wife, Maggie Goodballet, died in 1963.

        Surviving are  three daughters, Mrs. Eva Brownfield, Bethesda; Mrs. Agnes Lawson, Woodsfield; Mrs. Edna Long, Batesville; four sons, Harold, Grant and Frank, all of Woodsfield Route 3; Vernon, Ashland, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a son, Everett; seven brothers and two sisters.

        Friends received at Kelly-Kemp Funeral Home, Bethesda, Sunday, 12 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. with Evangelist Kenneth Frazier officiating.  Burial in Calais Cemetery.

Cline, Dale Glenn Cline

        Dale Glenn Cline, 49, of 118 Michigan Ave. died at 6 a.m. today in Marietta Memorial Hospital.

        Born Nov. 27, 1928 at Holiday's Cove,W. Va. he was a son of Edward Cline of Wingett Run, and the late Elizabeth Cline.  He retired in 1967 after 20 years of service with the U.S. Air Force.  He had driven for Ford Brothers, Inc. until he became disabled.  He was a member of the Church of God, American Legion Post 64, Parkersburg Coin Club and the American Numismatic Association.

        On July 5, 1963, he married Margaret Gutberlet Worstell, who survives with four sons and three daughters.  William H. Cline of Orlando, Fla., Rodney R. Worstell of Round Lake Beach, Ill., William Worstell, Mrs. Donald (Dianna) Gaskins and Mrs. Roberta Pethtel, all of Marietta, Ricky Cline and Cynthia Cline, both of Smithfield, N.C., and nine grandchildren.  His father and step-mother live in Wingett Run.  Also surviving are a brother and a sister, George Cline of Wingett Run, and Mrs. Dean (Ruth) Berga of Marietta Rt. 7.

        Two brothers preceded him in death.

        Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Church of God on Colegate Drive.  The Rev. J.P. O'Hara will officiate with burial to follow military graveside rites in Valley Cemetery.

        Friends may call at the McClure-Schafer Funeral Home until one hour prior to services, when the body will be taken to the church to be lie in state.

 

Cline, Kerrie Jane Cline nee Dillon

Monroe County Beacon, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, November 24, 1977

       Kerrie Jane Cline, 80, of Graysville died November 15, 1977 at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

       She was born April 14, 1897, in Monroe County, Ohio, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dillon.

       She was a member of the Matamoras Baptist Church.

       On January 4, 1922 she married Roy Cline, who died February 16, 1960.

       She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

       Services were held at H. Lee Hadley Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth McDonald officiating. Burial in Low Gap Cemetery.

 

Coughlan, Elmer J. Coughlan

        COUGHLAN, Elmer, J., 72, of Garden Park Terrace, Warwood, formerly of 2638  1/2 Chapline St., Wheeling, died Sunday in Wheeling Hospital.  He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, and retired secretary of the Wheeling Eagles.  Surviving are his wife, Helen A. McManus Coughlan; a daughter, Mrs. James (Maureen) Thompson of Wheeling; two sons, Elmer F. of Wheeling and Paul W. of Sterling Heights, Mich.; two sisters, Katherine Hatch of Martins Ferry, Regina Marquart of Wheeling; a brother, Frank Coughlan of Wheeling; eight grandchildren.  Friends received at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff St., Wheeling, 7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.  Arrangements are incomplete.

 

Courtney, Fred Courtney

        Fred Courtney, 76, well-known former Shelby County sheriff, recorder and clerk, was found dead at 9:30 a.m. today at his home at 719 W. Locust St., an apparent suicide victim, authorities said.  There were two gunshot wounds to the body.

        Born Sept. 6, 1900 in Shelby County, the son of James and Sarah (Perkins) Courtney, he was married Oct. 6, 1923 in Indianapolis to Doris Pope, who died Aug. 5, 1974.

        Surviving are a son, James Courtney, Indianapolis; a daughter, Mrs. Howard (Mavern) Chambers, Shelbyville; a brother, Hubert Courtney, Fountaintown; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

        Mr. Courtney was Shelby County sheriff from 1943-1947 and prior to that had been a deputy sheriff.  He was president of the Indiana Sheriffs' Association in 1946, and also served in 1946 and 1947 as the chairman of the Shelby County Democratic Central Committee.

        He also served as Shelby County state representative, county clerk and recorder, and formerly was employed as a guard at the Indiana reformatory at Pendleton.  A World War I veteran, Mr. Courtney belonged to the American Legion and Eagles Lodge and the former Red Men's Lodge and Fenn's Christian Church here.

        Services will be announced by the Murphy Mortuary.

        Former Alliance resident, Leroy Arthur Davies, 67, of Santa Clara, Calif., died Tuesday at Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Santa Clara, following a 10-day illness.

        Mr. Davies was born in Alliance Sept 27, 1910 to Arthur W. and Elizabeth Stickle Davies.  He served from1942  to 1945 in the European Theatre of Operations with the U. S. Army Air Corps, and had lived in California since 1946.

        Surviving are his wife, Rose; two daughters, Carol and Mrs. Lars (Mary) Meyer, both of Santa Clara; a son, Robert of Washington; two sisters, Mrs. Adolph (Juanita) Graber of Clearwater, Fla. and Mrs. Carl (Mary) Knori of Alliance; three brothers, John of San Jose, Calif., Richard of Homeworth, and E. James of Limaville; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

        Memorial services will be held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Middle Sandy United Presbyterian Church in Homeworth with the Rev. Cletus Baker officiating.  Burial will be in California.

 

Dethridge, Troy Joe Dethridge

        Funeral services for Troy Joe Dethridge, 4-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Joe Dethridge of Threlkel Ferry Road, were to be at 1 p.m. today at J.C. Kirby Funeral Chapel with burial in Fairview Cemetery.

        The child died Saturday when he apparently slipped from the rear of a backhoe and fell beneath the rear wheels.

        Survivors in addition to his parents include two sisters, Miss Kimberly Lee Dethridge and Miss Melissa Dethridge, both of Bowling Green, and grandparents, George Cardwell and Mr. and Mrs. John B. Dethridge, all of Bowling Green.

        Roy C. Dexheimer Jr., 48, of Chatham, formerly of Springfield, died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

        He was born in Springfield, the son of Roy C. and Ethel Slaughter* Dexheimer Sr. He married Charlotte Pride in 1967. He was employed by Capital City Paper Co. He was owner and operator of Moonlight Gardens Roller Rick for many years. He was a member of Laurel United Methodist Church.

        He is survived by his wife, Charlotte L.; three daughters, Ranee,** Rodna  and Rodleada,*** all of Hillsboro; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Kolila Gephart of Mount Vernon and Mrs. Robin Stains of Sylmar, Calif.; one stepson, Robert Pride of Chatham; three grandchildren; one brother, Robert of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and uncles.

        Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Staab Funeral Home, Rev. Ronald J. Winsor officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

        Samuel Ditterline of Yucca Valley died April 9 at Loma Linda University Medical Center.  He was 37-years old.

        A native of Tolu, Kent., he had lived in California and Yucca Valley for 10 months.

        Mr. Ditterline had been self-employed in janitorial service.

        Survivors include his wife, Judy A. Ditterline of Yucca Valley; three daughters, Vickie, Cathy and Kathy, all of Yucca Valley; three sons, Lee, Max and Sam, Jr., all of Yucca Valley; a stepdaughter, Vennie Hopper; a stepson, Wade Hopper; two brothers, Earl of Highland and Robert of Florida and a sister, Juanita Sisk of Illinois.

        Bishop Gary Foster of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Yucca Valley, will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Friday at the Wiefels and Son Chapel.  Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Joshua Tree.

        WOODSFIELD -- Services for Mrs. Josie M. Dougherty, 71, of Woodsfield, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bauer and Turner Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery.

        Mrs. Dougherty died Tuesday evening (Sept. 8, 1977) at Barnesville Hospital.

        Born Sept. 12, 1905 at Antioch, she was a member of Woodsfield Church of Christ.  Her husband, William, died Dec. 16, 1945.

        Mrs. Dougherty leaves two daughters, Mrs. Norman Hogue of Woodsfield and Mrs. Jack Haught of Minerva; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

        A retired farmer and a veteran of World War I, Mr. Eschbaugh was born Aug. 23, 1895 in Noble County, the son of Charles and Martha Roe Eschbaugh.

       Surviving are his wife, Salley Neuhart Eschbaugh, a son, Robert J. of Quaker City; three daughters, Mrs. William (Eileen) Warner of Grantville, Pa., Mrs. Roger (Marjorie) Long of Quaker City Route 1 and Mrs. Raymond (Shirley) McCort of Quaker City; a brother, Clarence of Salesville; four sisters, Mrs. Hazel Powell of Mt. Ephriam, Mrs. Ida Carpenter of Summerfield, Mrs. Anna Bates of the Summerfield area and Mrs. Isabel Brownfield of the Quaker City area; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Fisher, Clem Fisher

        Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 7, for Clem Fisher, who died in a Cherokee nursing home Jan. 4, at the age of 94 years.  Rev. Edmund Pendleton officiated at the service held at Grapes Funeral Chapel in Cherokee.  Burial was in Riverview cemetery, Kiowa.

        Clem was born in Monroe county, Ohio, March 12, 1882.  He was united in marriage to Lydia Mae Robinette of Burlington on Dec. 23, 1903.  They established a home in the Ingersoll community.  He was employed by the mill at Cherokee before transferring to the mill at Anthony, where he worked for 35 years before retiring as an engineer.

        He retired to Burlington where he farmed.  During his retirement, he attended church services in Kiowa and became well known in the Kiowa community.  In 1964, he moved to Cherokee.  He was a member of the First Christian Church.

        Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Neva) Gustafson, Lawrence, Mrs. Art (Leona) Caldwell, Riverton, Utah, and Mrs. Gene (Margaret) Atteberry, Romeoville, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Clara Jefferies, of Cherokee; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

        A memorial fund has been established for the First Christian Church, Cherokee, or the Alfalfa County Hospital Association.  Contributions may be made to the funeral home.

 

Goodballet, Andrew Joseph Goodballet

        Services were held Monday in California for A. J. (Joe) Goodballet, 63, of Whittier, Calif., who died Friday* in the Long Beach Veterans' Hospital at Long Beach.

        He was born June 25,** 1914, in East Liverpool, a son of Clyde Goodballet and Gertrude Faderly Goodballet.

        Mr. Goodballet had been a real estate broker in California, where he had moved eight years ago from Memphis, Tenn.

        He was a World War II Navy veteran, a graduate of East Liverpool High School and Ohio State University, was active in the Masonic Lodge and had been a member of the Pennsylvania Ave. United Methodist Church while residing in East Liverpool.

        Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Lawrence (Gertrude) Sixt of East Liverpool; a brother, Robert F. Goodballet of Corbina, Calif., and five nephews and one niece.

        Burial was Monday in Rose Hills Memorial Park at Whittier.

        GIRARD -- Mrs. Floyd E. (Margaret A.) Goodballet, 89, 112 Smithsonian Ave., died of a stroke at 9 p.m. Saturday in Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Youngstown.  She was American Legion Woman of the Year in 1971.    

        Mrs. Goodballet, who had been active in the Democratic Party, was the organizer and past president of the Blue Star Mothers.

        She was born Jan. 23, 1889, in Kittanning, Pa., the daughter of David and Margaret Quinn Reese.  Her husband, Floyd E. Goodballet, died in 1965.

        Mrs. Goodballet was a member of VFW Auxiliary 419 and American Legion Post 235 Auxiliary.

        Survivors include a son, Henry Reese of Girard; a daughter, Mrs. Cecile Bailey of Howland; a sister, Miss Amelia Reese of Girard; a brother, Ralph Reese of Girard.  A sister, Mrs. Mary Osborne, died in 1976.

        Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Rose Church.  Burial will be in Liberty Union Cemetery.

        Friends may call at the Blackstone Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.  VFW Auxiliary will conduct services at 6:30 p.m. and there will be a prayer service at 9 p.m.

        Services for Paul E. Green, 71, 611* Eberhart Drive, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carmony Funeral Home.  He died at 11 a.m. Thursday at Major Hospital, where he had been a patient 1 1/2 weeks.  He had been in failing health several years.

        Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday.  There will be a Masonic memorial service at 8:30 o'clock this evening.  The Rev. Robert Hampton will officiate at the services.  Burial will be in VanPelt Cemetery.  Memorials are requested to be in the form of contributions to the Leukemia Foundation.

        Mr. Green was born March 26, 1906 in Shelby County and was the son of William (Doc) and Belle (Brattain)** Green.  He was married June 10, 1927 to Ruth Darnell, who survives.

        Also surviving are two children, James L. Green and Mrs. Doran (Maryellen) May, both of Bloomington; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  A sister preceded him in death.

        Mr. Green, who had been employed as a purchasing agent for the State of Indiana, retired in June, 1973.  He belonged to the First Baptist Church where he was a former deacon.

        An active Mason, Mr. Green was a member of several Masonic groups and held several offices.  These include Shelby Lodge No. 28 F. & A.M., worshipful master in 1956 and treasurer from 1965-1976; the Shelby Chapter Royal Arch Masons, high priest in 1955 and secretary from 1968-1976; Shelby County Royal and Select Masters, illustrious master in 1954 and recorder from 1968-76.

        Also, Baldwin Commandery No. 2 Knights Templar, eminent commander, 1974; Knights of the York Cross of Honor of Robert A. Woods Priory No. 62; Naamah Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, worthy patron in 1965; and Southport OES.

    Mrs. Hamilton was born December 16, 1899, in Monroe County, Ohio, the daughter of John and Rose Agin Bott, and was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Hamilton, in August 1969.
    Mrs. Hamilton was a member of Moffatt Fletchers Methodist Church.
    She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Erma Jean Ackerman, of Woodsfield, Mrs. Deloras Confer, of Delaware, Ohio; one son, Harley Hamilton, of Route 1, Woodsfield; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

     Mrs. Patience C. Hannahs, (nee Carpenter), 85, Lewisville died at 12:30 a.m. today (Aug. 2, 1977) at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eunice Christman, with whom she resided.

     She was born Aug. 12, 1891 in Monroe County, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Emily Jones Carpenter,and was a member of  Trinity  United Church of Christ.

     In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Hannahs leaves three sons, Harold Hannahs of Barnesville R. D. 1, Wayne of Barnesville R. D. 2, Lloyd of Quaker City R. D. 2; 15 grandchildren, 28 great­ grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Pauline Carpenter, Lewisville, R.D. 1, Mrs. Mae Hannahs, Summerfield, Mrs. Mary Ann Coultas. Zanesville, and Mrs. Agnes Wehr, Batesville. Her husband, Glenn, died in 1971.

        TELL  CITY, Ind. – Mrs. Thelma Ruth Harding, 54, died Tuesday afternoon at Rosspoint, Ky., from injuries received in a car-truck accident.

        Surviving are her husband, the Rev. Henry Harding; two sons, Michael and David, both at home; her mother, Mrs. Anna Belle Henline of Forest City, N.C.; a sister, Miss Vera Henline of Forest City; and a brother, Earl Henline of Spartanburg, S.C.

        Services for Mrs. Harding and an uncle, John D. Jarboe, who died Tuesday will be at 11 am Friday at the Tell City Church of Christ.  Mrs. Harding’s burial will follow in Lilly Dale Church of Christ Cemetery near Tell City.

        Alexander W. Haupt, 76, 247 East Main St., St. Clairsville, died Wednesday afternoon at Ohio Valley General Hospital, Wheeling.  Born in Bucharest, Rumania, June 29, 1901, he was a son of the late John and Josephine Just Haupt.

        He was a member of Morning Dawn Lodge 7 F & AM of Gallipolis, Ohio, Scottish Rite of Columbus, Osiris Temple of the Shrine of Wheeling and a retired employe [sic] of Pittsburgh-Plate Glass.

        Preceded in death by his wife, Florence Virginia Calvert Haupt, in March of 1976, he is survived by a brother, John of Youngstown; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Madon of Mayfield Village, Ohio and Mrs. Hermine Goell of Fairview Park, Ohio.

       Otto G. Highman, 87, of Woodsfield, Route 3, died early Monday morning, October 10, 1977, at Barnesville Hospital following an extended illness.

       Born May 2, 1890, near Graysville, he was a son of the late Abner and Phoebe Drake Highman.

       Mr. Highman was a member of the Connor Ridge United Methodist Church, and was a retired farmer.

       Surviving are his wife, Mary Jones Highman; three sons, Lawrence Highman of Graysville; Virgil Highman of Zanesville, and Ronald Highman, of the home; three daughters, Mrs. William (Neva) Kleman, of Hanoverton, Ohio; Mrs. Robert (Carolyn) Love, Sr., of Woodsfield, Route 1, and Mrs. Glenn (Bonnie) Bertschy, of Creston; twenty grandchildren; thirty-two-great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Georgia Williams, of Woodsfield, Route 3, and three brothers, David Highman, of Woodsfield, Route 1; Jay Highman, of Lewisville, Route 2, and Alonzo Highman, of Ashland.

Hill, Elmer C. Hill

        Elmer C. Hill, 88, Marietta Rt. 1, died at 9:15 p.m. yesterday at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

        He was born Oct. 16, 1888, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Lucian and Nellie Hill.  He spent most of his life in Marietta, where he had been employed at Marietta Paint & Color Co. until his retirement.  He had also been employed at Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., Akron.

        Mr. Hill was a member of the Second Congregational Church and was a 50-year member of American Union Lodge No. 1, F & AM, and Scottish Rite Society, Valley of Cambridge.

        On Oct. 18, 1915, he married Mabel Day, who died Nov. 27, 1967.  Three brothers preceded him in death.

        Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in McClure-Schafer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harold Shutts officiating and burial in Valley Cemetery.  Masonic services will be at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the funeral home.

        Mrs. Grace G. Hines, 78, of 1708 Troy Road, died at the Brethren Care Nursing Home early Tuesday afternoon following a lingering illness.

        Born in Lewisville, Monroe County, Dec. 22, 1898, she was the daughter of Joseph O. and Mary Billman DeVoe.  She had resided in Ashland County since 1934, moving from Muskingum County.

        Mrs. Hines was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Hazel Bowers Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Womens Society.

        On Oct. 12, 1976, Mr. and Mrs. Hines celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

        Mrs. Hines was married Oct. 12, 1926 to Homer J. Hines, who survives.

        Also surviving are one son, John O. Hines of Ashland; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Matthews of Columbus and Mrs. Alice Ables of Jeromesville; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

        Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Denbow-Primm Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry Hull and the Rev. Thomas Snyder officiating.  Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

        John David Jarboe, 77, Tell City, died at 2:06 pm Tuesday, Nov 22 at Perry County Memorial Hospital.

        A native of Perry County, Mr. Jarboe was born May 16, 1900, the son of the late Sylvester and Katie (Morris) Jarboe.

        Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Franchville of Tell City; a son Curtis of Tell City; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Clara Jarboe of Leopold, Mrs. Majorie Blair of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Irene Bell, Mrs. Esther Gulliaume and Mrs. Mary Ward all of Tell City; two brothers, Tom of Bristow and Alfred of Leopold; a sister, Mrs. Janey Harding of Holland, KY; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; 25 step-grandchildren and 25 step-great-grandchildren.

        Services will be held at 11 am Friday, Nov. 25 at the Church of Christ with burial in St Augustine Cemetery in Leopold.

Jones, Charles Oliver Jones

        Charles Oliver Jones, 69, who spent the majority of his childhood and his later life in Winthrop, died on May 11.  Funeral services were held on May 14, 11 a.m., at the Church of Christ United with the Rev. Russell Rasmussen officiating.  Burial was in the Fremont Township Cemetery.

        Jones was born in Winchester, Ky. on July 10, 1907, the son of William and Eliza (Fischer) Jones.  He married Lena Voland on Oct. 28,1929 at the Methodist Parsonage in Independence.

        Jones was employed by the Illinois Central Railroad for a number of years, by the Winthrop Telephone Exchange for 13 years and the Mental Health Institute for 15 years.  He retired in May of 1974 from the Mental Health Institute.

        Survivors include his wife, Lena; three daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Pierce, Mrs. Don (Helen) Reck and Mrs. Edwin (Evelyn) Cook, all of Winthrop; one son, Richard, Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Harold (Laura) Scott, and Mrs. Margaret Stimson, both of Manchester.

        He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

        Fawcett Funeral Home of Winthrop was in charge of arrangements.

Suspect     suicide     in     death     of     Winthrop     man

        INDEPENDENCE -- Charles Jones, 70, of Winthrop died Wednesday morning, apparently of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

        He was taken to People's Memorial Hospital in Independence and transferred to University Hospitals where he died later in the day.

        The incident was investigated by the Buchanan County sheriff's office and according to sheriff John Bergman, the investigation is continuing.

        MINGO  JUNCTION -- Mrs. Anita L. (Vandette) Keller, 52, of RD 2, Rayland, formerly of Mingo Junction, died Wednesday at 8:20 a.m. in the Ohio Valley Hospital in Steubenville.

        She was a member of St. Lucy's Catholic Church in Yorkville.  She was a former employee of the Ohio Valley Hospital and the Forester Rest Home in Wintersville.

        Survivors include her husband, John W. Keller; a daughter, Lisa Ann Keller, at home; two brothers, Joseph Vandette of Smithfield and Domonic Vandette of Steubenville; and a sister, Mrs Domonic (Mary) Fogliette of Weirton.

        She was born Jan. 1, 1925, in Mingo Junction, a daughter of the late Frank and Nataline* Patrizi Vandette.

        Friends will be received at the Hoff Funeral Home 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today and Friday; services Saturday with final arrangements pending.

       Randal Dale Kilburn, 17, of Lewisville, Route 1, died Wednesday evening, August 10, 1977, in Barnesville Hospital.

       A son of Dale and Dorothy Koehler Kilburn, of Lewisville, Route 1, he was born on August 20, 1959, in Belmont County.

       Randal was a student in the Switzerland of Ohio Vocational School and a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville.

       Surviving besides his parents, are one brother, Kevin and one sister, Kathy, of the home, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Kilburn, of Lewisville, Route 1.

       Services were held Saturday afternoon at two o’clock in the Bauer and Turner Chapel with Rev. Fred Nippert officiating. Burial was in Middle Church Cemetery, near Lewisville.

        George F. King, former Rushville resident died Tuesday morning in Bartholomew County Hospital, Columbus, Indiana.

        Born March 5, 1914, he was the son of Earl and Inez Lambert King.  Mr. King was a veteran serving in the Navy and participated in seven invasions.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Columbus, the VFW and the Masons.

        Survivors include the widow, Darlene; a daughter, Mrs. Dave (Janet) Theaphilus [sic–THEOPHILUS], Lakeview, Florida; two brothers, Thomas King, Nashville, Indiana; and Howard King, Darlington Road, Florida; a sister, Mrs. Stewart (Sarah) Wilson, Rushville; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; four nephews and two nieces.

        Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at Norman's Funeral Home, Hope, Indiana.

        King was born March 5, 1914, in Rush County to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas King.  He was a retired insurance salesman.

        PAULDING -- Orville O. Kinkade, 85,  109 W. Harrison St., died Aug. 2* in the Dallas Lamb Foundation Home, Payne, where he had been a patient three months.

        He was born Nov. 17, 1891, in Paulding County to Charles and Laura (Tucker) Kinkade, was a former Paulding County Sheriff's Department deputy; a retired farmer; a member of First Christian Church and Widow's Son Lodge, F & AM.  He was an Army veteran of World War I.

        Surviving are his wife, Bernice (Jackson) Kinkade; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Harold Miller, Cleveland; two stepsons, Paul Jackson, Findlay and Theron Jackson, Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Milo Blackmore, Van Wert, and Mrs. Ilo Mohr, Grover Hill.

        Preceding him in death were his first wife, Nora in 1970, a sister, Mrs. George Bemis and a stepbrother, Carl Strock.

       Services were Friday in First Christian Church, Rev. David Everton officiating, and burial was in Live Oak Cemetery.  Crowell-Den Herder Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lower     Salem     girl     killed     in      Lebanon

        Two-year-old Anna M.Kuhn of Lower Salem was struck by a car and killed Saturday evening in Lebanon, according to reports received here.

        She was the daughter of Earl (Hank) and Bonnie Kuhn.  She died enroute to Bethesda Hospital.

        The Monroe County Sheriff's Dept. said the investigation into the accident is continuing.

        Anna Marie Kuhn was born April 11, 1976 and is survived by her parents, brothers Roger and Ricky and a sister, Rebecca.  All the children live at home.

        The grandparents are Iola Kuhn of Rinard Mills and Dean and Hazel Stark of Oklawaha, Fla.

        Great grandparents are Dale Holland of Rinard Mills and Virgil Stark of Lower Salem.

        Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the McClure-Schafer Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Kendall officiating.  Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home.

SUMMERFIELD---Services for Ellis D. (Pete) Leach, 83, will be at 1 P.M. Friday at Brubach Funeral Home. Evang. J. Bernard Mason will officiate and burial will be in Eastern Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by Summerfield American Legion.

       A retired farmer, Mr. Leach died at 10:45 A.M. Tuesday (Jan. 18, 1977) at his home following a long illness.

       He was born Dec. 19, 1893, in Noble County, the son of the late Samuel and Angelic Carpenter Leach, and was a member of Bates Hill Church of Christ and Summerfield American Legion Post. He was a World War 1 veteran.

       Mr. Leach leaves four daughters, Mrs. Charles (Betty) Casey, MT. Ephriam, Miss Phyllis Leach of the home, Mrs. Carl (Edith) Bates, West Lafayette, Mrs. John (Nancy) Moore, Coshocton; one son Clinton of West Lafayette; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Kate Flood and Mrs. Jennie Flood, both of Zanesville, Mrs. Harriett Carpenter, Uhrichsville; and two brothers, Acel (Ace) Leach and Arch Leach, both of Quaker City. His wife, Maude died in April 1973.

        David A. Lyons, 51, a Martins Ferry policeman for 23 years, died Saturday at 12:30 a.m. at Martins Ferry Hospital.

        A resident of 912 Virginia St., Martins Ferry, he was born in Bridgeport, Nov. 17, 1925, a son of the late Sherman and Edith Schultz Lyons Sr.

        He was a member of St. Johns' Lutheran Church of Martins Ferry, had served with the U. S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific in World War II, was a member of Martins Ferry VFW and the Fraternal Order of Police.

        Surviving are his widow, Regina Ritchie Lyons; one son, Charles A. Lyons of Martins Ferry; a brother, Sherman Lyons Jr. of Morristown; four sisters, Johanna Marie Banks of Miami, Fla., Mrs. Louis (Charlotte) Stein of Aliquippi, Pa., Alice May Baker of Martins Ferry and Mrs. Jesse (Phyllis) Pritt of Valley Grove, W. Frank G. Moose, 84, died Wednesday at his home.  He was born in Woodsfield, Ohio and had been a resident of Hot Springs for the past 30 years.  He was a retired railroad engineer, a veteran of Worl War I, a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W. and the Eagles Barracks No. 317 and was a Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Edna M. Moose of Hot Springs; a step-son, R.G. Rowley of Memphis, Tenn.; two nephews and one niece.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Little Rock National Cemetery under the direction of Caruth Funeral Home.  Rev. Neal Rayborn officiating.

        Cremation is planned for Robert L. Perkins, 81, of 4776 Tambor Court, a retired San Diego market owner who died Thursday in a hospital.  There will be no services.  Inurnment will be in El Camino Memorial Park under the direction of Cypress View Mortuary.

        A native of Indiana and a county resident for 55 years, Mr. Perkins owned Perkins Market at 28th Street and Ocean View Boulevard for 34 years before retiring in 1962.  He was a cofounder of Alfred M. Lewis Grocers Co. and a charter member of the San Diego Police Reserves.

        A life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 244 and a past president of the Southeast YMCA, he also was a member of the San Diego Retail Grocers Association and the Southeast Exchange Club.

        Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Helen F. Vermeulen of Chula Vista and Mrs. Darlene M. McCombs of San Diego; a son, Harold L. of Lemon Grove; two brothers, including Everett of San Diego; nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

        Mrs. Ruby Joy Perry, 52, Kirksville, passed away Sunday, October 23, 1977, at 7 a.m. in Ellis Fischel Hospital, Columbia, where she had been since October 3, 1977.

        She was born Dec. 21, 1924 in Knox County, the daughter of Leon Lester and Grace Christina Campbell Rogers.  Her mother died Feb. 10, 1977.  On Dec.10, 1944, she was married to Howard Marshall Perry at Shelbina and he died June 1, 1970.

        Surviving are two daughters;  Cleva Joyce, Mrs. Larry Clark of Edina, and Marsha Ellen Perry of the home, a son, Lester Carl Perry of Atchison, Kansas, her father, Leon Lester Rogers of Edina, a grandson, Jacob Carl Perry, two sisters; Arlene, Mrs. Guy Larson of Hillsdale, Ill., Rami Lou, Mrs. Carl Douglas of near Novelty, and several nieces and nephews.

        She had lived west of Novelty until moving to Kirksville seven years ago.  She had been employed at Grim-Smith Hospital as a nurses aid until her health failed about 3 years ago.

        She was a member of the Novelty Christian Church.

        Funeral services were Tuesday, October 25, 1977 at Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel, Edina, with Bob Schofield of Lancaster, Mo. officiating.  Burial was in Locust Hill Cemetery, west of Novelty, Mo.

        Wilbur C. Pope, 73, 2623 Joseph Cox Court, died Monday at Bartholomew County Hospital shortly after being admitted.  He had been ill since November.

        Pope was a retired farmer and truck driver and a former member of the Old Winchester Methodist Church in Shelby County.  He was also a charter member of the Western Riders Club in Shelbyville and a member of the Senior Center in Columbus.  He moved to Columbus from Shelbyville in 1974.

        Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Murphy Funeral Home in Shelbyville.  Burial will be at Lewis Creek Baptist Cemetery.

        Persons may call at the funeral home from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

        Pope was born Sept. 27, 1903, in Shelby County to the late James L. and Blanche Young Pope.  He married the former Bertha Urich who died in 1973.  He then married Miriam E. Waltz July 19, 1974, in Madison, and she survives.

        Other survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Streeval of Columbus; two brothers, Gordon Pope of Shelbyville and John L. Pope of Acton; two sisters, Dora Schuck of Shelbyville and Dorothy Myer of Action, and three grandchildren.


        One sister preceded him in death.

        He was born August 23, 1901 in Stark County, the son of Thomas and Maude May Claybaugh Pyle.

        He was married September 25, 1940 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Grace Barton, who died June 5, 1970.

        He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge, Shrine and Scottish Rite of Peoria.

        He is survived by three brothers and two sisters, John of Leghanon [sic--Lebanon], Ore., Ted of Toulon and Dean of Galesburg, Mrs. Philip (Ruth) Anderson, Toulon and Mrs. Delbert (Joseph) Aldredge of Madison, Wisconsin.

        He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother and two sisters.

        Calling hours were held on Tuesday night at the Kidd Funeral Home.

        Services were 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Wayne Brackett officiating.  Burial was in the Toulon Cemetery.

        Mrs. Mercy Faith Riggs, 75, 2124 Belmont St., Bellaire, died early today at Wheeling Hospital.  Born at New Martinsville, W. Va., July 25,1901,* she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Ida Mae DeNoon.

        She was a member of the South Bellaire United Methodist Church.

        Preceded in death by her husband, Halgie, Feb. 5, 1975, she is survived by a son, Wilbert Moore of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one daughter, Mrs. Wilma Frye of Bellaire; one brother, Howard DeNoon of Moundsville; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.

        Friends will be received at the Walter C. Bauknecht and Son Funeral Home, Bellaire, after 7 p.m. tonight.  Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. William Moran officiating.  Burial in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.

        EDWARD L., age 52, of 4522 Eddie Ave. SW, Canton, died Saturday evening in Aultman Hospital after a two-month illness.  He lived in Canton for the past 30 years, coming from Marietta.  He was employed at the Berger Division of Republic Steel.  A member of Canton Baptist Temple where he was a bus driver and a member of the Adult Bible Class.  Survived by his widow, Waneta; two daughters, Becky and Judy Rumbold; one son, Ben Rumbold, all of the home, and two sisters, Mrs. Clyde (Verneda) Cronin of Marietta and Mrs. James (Betty) McCoy of Canton.  Two brothers preceded him in death.  Services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in the Canton Baptist Temple with Rev. Harold Henniger officiating.  Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.  Friends may call Tuesday 2:30-4:30 and 7-9 p.m. in the Kreighbaum Funeral Home and one hour before the services Wednesday at the church.

        FLORA  E., age 94, of 7040 Maplehurst SE, East Sparta died Thursday evening in Aultman Hospital after a short illness.  Born in Magnolia, she had been a life resident of Stark County.  She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and at the time of her death, she was the oldest member of Pike Grange.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Blaine Russell who died Sept. 6, 1966 and two sons, Floyd and G. Harold Russell.  Survivors include one son, Paul Russell of the home; two grandsons, Larry and Richard Russell both of Canton; three great-grandchildren.  Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Evelyn Weaver officiating.  Burial will be in East Sparta Cemetery.  Friends may call Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  There will be Pike Grange services at 6:45 p.m.

Sanders, 23, 1501 Grant Avenue, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, died yesterday in Methodist Hospital.  A one-year employe of Lawrence Painting Company, Mr. Sanders was a member of Painters Union Local 47.  Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Grinsteiner Funeral Home, with burial in Washington Park East Cemetery.  Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Linda Sanders; a son, David W. Sanders Jr.; his mother, Mrs. Janet Cook, and his father, William E. Sanders, all of Indianapolis.

        She was a member of the First Baptist Church and of the Hymera Order of Eastern Star.

        She is survived by the husband, Homer; four daughters, Mrs. Zada Barnett and Mrs. Georgia Hutchinson, both of rte one Shelburn, Rosemary Keller, Hymera and Mrs. Betty Enochs, LaPort [sic--LaPorte]; a son Gerald, Farmersburg; a brother Norman Miller, Linton; three sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Kirkman and Mrs. Alma Myers, both of Linton and Mrs. Georgia Wise, Englewood, Calif.; 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

        Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the McHugh Hymera Chapel with Rev. Allen Roberts and Rev. Lincoln Stafford officiating and burial in Olive Branch Cemetery.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

HOMER C., age 89, of 1891 Walnut St. SE, East Sparta, passed away Wednesday  morning [SUBMITTER'S NOTE: 18 Nov 1978] in Aultman Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Monroe County and had been a resident of East Sparta for 74 years. He retired in 1958 from Spartek, Inc. and then was Supt. of the East Sparta Water Works for 18 years. He was a former Pike Twp. Trustee and also served on the East Sparta Board of Education. Preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Schaub, on Nov. 5, 1972. Survived by one daughter, Mrs. Howard (Viola) Inboden of East Sparta, and one grandson. Services will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 p.m.  in the Gordon Funeral Home in East Sparta with Rev. William Moody officiating.  Interment in Fort Laurens Cemetery in Bolivar.

        Surviving with his parents are two brothers, Charles Jr. and Scott, both of the home, grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Schultheisz, Marietta, and Edward Moore, Zanesville, and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Maude Trehearne [sic–Treherne], Marietta.

        Services will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow in McClure-Schafer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ralph Yarnell officiating and burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

 

Schwartz, Nancy Ridgway Schwartz

Mrs. Nancy Ridgway Schwartz, 89, 244 W. Columbia St. died at Aultman Hospital in Canton at 8:30 a.m. today following a one-week illness.  A member of Christ United Methodist Church, Mrs. Schwartz was born in Rinards Mills July 17, 1887 to Andrew W. and Nancy Ridgway and had lived in this area for 42 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles H. 

Surviving are two daughters, Miss Nina Schwartz and Mrs. Beulah Meyer, both of Alliance; a son, Forrest of Poland; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  She was also preceded by a son, Meryl in 1932.  Services will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Cassaday and Turkle Funeral Home with Dr. John Norton Williams of First Christian Church officiating.  Burial will be in Fairmount Memorial Park.  There are no calling hours.

Shaw, W. Ted Shaw

        W. Ted Shaw Sr., 76, of 951 DeSota Rd., Boca Raton, Fla., a former shoe company executive, died at 1:12 p.m. Sunday at Boca Raton Community Hospital.

        He was born Jan. 10,* 1901 at Sego, Ohio.  He had been a Florida resident since 1969 and previously had lived in Scarsdale, N.Y., where he had been a wholesale shoe salesman.  From 1950 to 1969 he was an executive with the Brauer Bros. Shoe Co. in St. Louis.  He retired in 1969 and moved to Florida, where he owned and operated the Roadrunner Tire Co. in Boca Raton.

        He was the son of the late Alonzo and Mary Stoneburner Shaw.

        His wife, Wanda L. Foster, died in 1965.

        Surviving are one son, W. Ted Shaw Jr. of Greenwich, Conn.; one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Marsha) Codling of Glenmont, N. Y.; three granddaughters; five brothers, Paul L. Shaw of 428 Eppley Ave., Cecil Shaw of Somerset, Leo Shaw of Doylestown, Albert Shaw of Avondale and Elmer Shaw of Fultonham; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Lou Brown of Somerset, Mrs. Thoburn (Myrtie) Krofft of Mt. Perry, Mrs. Francis (Gertrude) Love of Thornville, Mrs. Marguerite Hammer of Juanita Dr., South Zanesville.

        The body will be brought to Bryan Funeral Home where friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.  Further arrangements are incomplete.

Simpson, Ralph C. Simpson

Cisne  Man  Found  Dead

        Ralph C. Simpson, 80, a resident of Cisne many years, was found dead at 12:15 p.m. Thursday at his home in Cisne.

        Mr. Simpson, who lived alone, was found by his brother-in-law, Merle Malone.  Coroner Bob Johnson conducted an inquiry into his death and it is believed he suffered a heart attack.

Rites  Conducted

        Services were conducted at 1:30 Sunday afternoon at the Hosselton Funeral Home in Cisne, with Bro. John Bainum officiating.  Burial was in the Cisne Cemetery.

        Mr. Simpson was born June 27, 1897, in Wayne County, the son of Samuel and Sidney (Spriggs) Simpson.

        He was married to Blanche Powless Aug. 21, 1918, in Cisne.  She preceded him in death Apr. 10, 1972.

        Mr. Simpson was a general laborer.

The Survivors

        Surviving are one son, Lales, of Fairfield; one daughter, Mrs. David (Catherine) Truax, of Ravenna, O.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mike (Marie) German of Michigan and Mrs. Merle (Julia) Malone, of Cisne.

        Preceding him in death were one daughter, Dorothy Glenn; one brother, Wayne; one sister, Blanche, and his parents.

 

Stalder, Charles William “Chuck” Stalder

        Charles William Stalder, oldest child of Oscar and Lulu Bowers Stalder was born January 21, 1905. He passed away April 12, 1977 at Rosary Hospital in Corning, at the age of 72 years, 2 months and 22 days.

        Charles was born in Adams County and spent most of his life in this area. On January 29, 1931, he was married to Esthelene Beezley and they lived most of their married life at their present home in Brooks.

        In his younger days he was employed as a carpenter and then as a section hand for the Burlington RR for approximately 25 years.

        After retiring from the railroad he kept himself busy with part-time employment, working with his friends and neighbors, and gardening. He took great pride in his garden and thoroughly enjoys sharing the fruits of the harvest with his family and friends.

        Chuck, as he was known by his friends, was always around to lend a helping hand. An important part of his life was participating in community events. He was ever present with a willing hand at all functions at the Brooks Community Hall.

        He is survived by his devoted wife, Esthelene; four sisters, Ruby Greenfield of Villisca, Esther Anderson of Tarkio, Missouri, Ruth Lampe of Winterset and Marie Pullen of Lakewood, Colo.; two brothers, Dale of Nodaway and Harold of Downington,* Pa., other family members and friends.

        He will be keenly missed by all who knew him and especially by his many "little friends" upon who he bestowed much attention.

        Funeral services were held at the Larkin-Roland Funeral Home in corning April 15 at 1L30 p.m., with Rev. James W. Kind and Rev. Ray Thompson officiating. Interment was in Methodist Grove Cemetery, Corning.

        Music was furnished by Erma Fuller, organist and Marie West, vocalist. Pallbearers were Max Downard, Lloyd Leonard, Jack Morrison, Dean Firkins, Don Mercer and Gary Leusink. Honorary bearers were Henry Heaton, Gail Ogburn, James Crawford, Don Perrin, Darrel Ogburn and Bill Milgrove. Flour bearers were Doris Heaton, Daisy Brown, Mary Morrison and Marge Downard.

Saginaw, Michigan

        Passed away early Thursday, morning July 21, 1977, at Saginaw General Hospital after a lingering illness.  Age 64 years.  He was born May 16, 1913, in Middleport, Ohio.  He was a member of the Swan Valley United Methodist Church, the Solar Lodge No. 592 of Saginaw, also the Evangeline Chapter of the Eastern Star in Middleport, Ohio.  He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He was employed by the Grey Iron Foundry for 27 years, retiring in June of 1976.  He married Katie Turner Dec. 26, 1942 in Toledo, Ohio.  She survives him.  He also leaves several nieces and nephews.

        Funeral service will take place 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Case Chapel, 409 Adams St.  Rev. Terry Allen will officiate with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.  The Solar Lodge No. 592 will conduct a commital service.  Friends may call at the chapel from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday.

 

Truex, Eddie Ray Truex

        Eddie Ray Truex, 19 of 9480* San Bernardino Road, Cucamonga, died Sept. 12 at Glendale, Ariz.  In the building and construction business, he was a native of Pomona and a West End resident all of his life.  He graduated from Alta Loma High School and served in the United States Marine Corps.  He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Karen Metz and his stepfather, Eddy Metz, of Cucamonga; two sisters, Shirley Truex and Rebecca Purrington, both of Cucamonga; one brother Roy Purrington, Cucamonga; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Lowther of Montclair and Mrs. Melvin Johnson of Cherry Valley and Maynard Truex of Oregon.  Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Park Cemetery, Claremont.  Draper Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

DECATUR:  Celia Woodurn Tustin, 90, of 1517 Pulaski St., Lincoln, died at 5:25 a.m. Friday at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Decatur, with the Rev. Laren Spear officiating.  Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

She was born in Webster County WVA on July 27, 1886, a daughter of Jacob and Ella Richardson Morris.  She married Clem Tustin in 1941.  He died in 1959.

Surviving are one son, Charles Woodburn, Lincoln; one brother, Vern Morris of Tallmadge, OH; one sister, Mrs. Iva Webster, Akron, OH; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.  One son preceded her in death.

She was a member of Church of the Nazarene, Lincoln.

She was employed for 17 years as a nurse’s aid at Lincoln Developmental Center.

        Rhoda B. Voland, 94, Columbus, died August 28 at the Columbus Convalescent Center.

        She was born in Brown County on August 18, 1883, the daughter of John H. and Mary L. (McDaniel) Stinson.

        She was married to Edward L. Voland, who died in 1948.

        Mrs. Voland was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

        She is survived by a son, James A. Voland, Franklin; three daughters, Mrs. Dennis G. Lain and Doris Crouch of Columbus, and Mrs. Ralph Wright of Bethesda, Maryland; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

        A son and a sister preceded her in death.

        Funeral services for Mrs. Voland were conducted August 30 at the Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus, the Rev. L. Ray Lynn officiating.

        Burial was at Garland Brock Cemetery in Columbus.

        Theophilus "Ossie" Willgus, 86, Tell City, died at 7:51 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Perry County Memorial Hospital.

        A native of Perry County, Mr. Willgus was born June 24, 1891, the son of the late William and Amanda (Early) Willgus.  He was a retired mechanic.

        Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Olive Kleeman of Tell City and Mrs. Audrey Hess and Mrs. Lillian Conner, both of Spring Grove, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

        Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23 at Finch Funeral Home, Bro. Ray Naugle officiated, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Wolfarth, Stanley J. Wolfarth

        Stanley J. Wolfarth, 27, Findlay, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in his home.

        Hancock County Coroner Dr. Byron F. Voorhees ruled the death a suicide due to a gunshot wound to the head.

        He was born May 16, 1950, in Fostoria, to John and Dorothy L. (Minard) Wolfarth.  His father and step-mother, Mrs. Janice (Ludlow) Wolfarth survive in Fostoria.  He married Peggy A. Price, March 20, 1970, and she survives at home.

        Also surviving are a son, Jason A., and a daughter, Tracy R., at home; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Hazel Minnard [sic--Minard], Findlay, and four sisters, Jan, Pam, Lynn, and Mrs. Marcie Williams, all of Fostoria.

        Mr. Wolfarth was employed at Atlas Crankshaft and was a Navy veteran of the Viet Nam War.  He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the Fostoria Archery Club.

        Funeral services are 3 p.m. Saturday in Kirkpatrick-Hawkins Funeral Home, Findlay, the Rev. James E. Nuhfer officiating.  Burial will be at Memory Gardens, Arcadia.

        Visitation at the funeral home is 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday.
