Armstrong, Freda Ripley Armstrong, nee Mercer

        Mrs. Freda Ripley Armstrong, 65, of Jefferson Street, Newell, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 1989, at home after suffering an apparent heart attack.

        She was born June 26, 1924, in New Martinsville, W.Va., a daughter of the late John W. Mercer and Iva Walker Mercer.

        A retired potter, Mrs. Armstrong had been employed 34 years at the Homer Laughlin China Co.  She also retired from Waterford Park after 15 years as a mutuel [sic] clerk.  She was a member of the Sheriff's Advisory Committee, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6450 Auxiliary in Chester and American Legion Post 114 Auxiliary in Newell.

       Her husband, Marl D. Armstrong, died in January 1969.*

       Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Carol) Dunlevy of Ashland, Ky., and Mrs. Charles (Gloria) Richard of Newell; four sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Cora) Booher and Mrs. Esta Smith of Newell, and Mrs. Grace Lockhart and Elaine Rose of East Liverpool; two brothers, Homer J. Mercer of East Liverpool and Brady G. Mercer of Hallandale, Fla.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

        Services are planned at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home.

Burial is to be in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens.

        Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

*Submitter's Note:  The West Virginia Archives shows Freda’s marriage to Marl Desco Armstrong on 20 Feb 1969.  This is the original form, not a summarized copy,  so there is a conflict with Marl D. Armstrong's purported death in January 1969 as shown in this obituary of Freda's.

 

Baker, Ruth Hogue Baker

   Ruth Ella Hogue Baker, 54 of 33224 Railroad Street, Lewisville died early Wednesday morning January 25, 1989 at the Good Samaritian Hospital, Zanesville.  She was born December 16, 1934 in Monroe County a daughter of Virginia Smith Hogue of Lewisville and the late Roy Hogue.  She was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ.

   In addition to her mother Virginia Smith Hogue, she is survived by her husband, Gary Baker, Lewisville; four daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Debbie Hogue) Gardner, Graysville, Mrs. John (Sharon Headley) Huffman, Jerusalem, Mrs. Steven (Jeanie Thompson) Carpenter, Whipple; Shirley Thompson, Lower Salem; one son,  Russell Headley, Woodsfield; three step-daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Carla Baker) Foraker, Caldwell, Mrs. Mathew (Tawyna Baker) Singleton, Columbus;16 grandchildren; one brother, James Coy Hogue, Lewisville.

   Friends were received at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield where services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday with Harry Summers officiating.  Interment will be in the Friendship Cemetery, Lewisville, Ohio. 

 

Ballard, Lawrence Andrew Ballard

        Services were held Friday afternoon at Crawford-Bowers-Brown Funeral Home chapel for Lawrence Andrew Ballard, 68, of Copperas Cove.  Ballard died Dec. 25 at a Temple hospital.

        The Rev. Gary Hocker officiated at the funeral, and burial followed, at Copperas Cove City Cemetery, with full military honors.

        Ballard was born Aug. 18, 1921 in Sand Springs, Okla.  He was a retired U.S. Army veteran of 26 years.  He belonged to the Nazarene Church, Good Sam Club, Copperas Cove D.A.V., Copperas Cove VFW Post 8577, the Friendship International Travel Club, Lone Star Travel Club, and Hoppin' Sam's Travel Club of Copperas Cove.

        Survivors are his wife, Olive Ballard of Cove; two sons, Dennis L. Ballard of Charleston, S.C., and Paul Edward Tobalt of LaPorte, Ind.; three daughters, Linda Kay Harper of Burbank, Calif., Lynda A. Kittle of Bastrop and Nancy Anne Smolen of Copperas Cove; mother, Sarah Jane Ballard of Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Harrison Streeter Ballard Jr., of Springfield and James Ballard of Bonner, Kan.; five sisters, Mary Weaver and Fannie Buttram of Grove Springs, Mo., Lovie Still of Fairgrove, Mo., and Lois King and Dorothy Brickey, both of Springfield; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

        Crawford-Bowers-Brown Funeral Home in Copperas Cove was in charge of arrangements.     

 

Beasley, Elizabeth Beasley, nee Luter

        WAKEFIELD - Elizabeth Luter Beasley, 75, died Friday, Jan. 27, in the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond.

        She was born in Isle of Wight County.

        She was a member of Wakefield Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 172, Waverly.

        Survivors include her husband, James L. Beasley; one daughter, Mary B. McGrady of Richmond; one son, Lonnie F. Beasley of Charlottesville; one sister, Edith Sadler of Springfield; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

        A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Purviance Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Parker Hooper. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery.

        The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home

        BECKER, Philip R., age 83, of Dayton and Sebring, Fl, died Sun., June 18, 1989 in Florida.  He was born Dec. 27, 1905 in Dayton; graduated from Steele H.S.; attended Denison University and OSU; graduated from Washington & Lee University LLB 1929; admitted to practiced of law 1929 with the firm of James & Coolidge.  Practiced continuously with the firm of Coolidge, Becker, Wall & Wood, Dayton and presently a member of the law firm of Cowden, Pfarrer, Crew & Becker, Dayton.  A member of the Dayton, Ohio State and American Bar Associations; Dayton Lawyers Club; past President of Dayton Barriters [sic--Barristers] Club; Special Counsel Attorney General of Ohio 1939-1949; College Fraternities:  Beta Theta Pi and Phi Delta Phi; member of Christ Episcopal Church; past President of Men's Republican Club; Civic:  past President and Trustee, Dayton Children's Bureau; Trustee Emeritus and past President of Grandview Hospital; Trustee of Dayton Boys' Club; Director of Junior Achievement of Dayton; Chairman of Board of Tax Appeals, City of Dayton; member of Dayton Bicycle Club, Columbus Athletic Club, Moraine Country Club, Brown's Run Country Club, Middletown & Spring Run Fishing Club.

        Survived by his wife, Jane N. Becker; 1 son, Philip Jr. of California; 1 daughter, Molly Bocher [sic--Becker] of California; 2 sisters, Harriet Meeker of Franklin, OH and Mary Ann Cotterman of Yellow Springs, OH; 7 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren. 

        Memorial services Monday, 11 A.M. at Christ Episcopal Church, 20 W. First St., Rev. Hugh Brownlee officiating.  Entombment David's Mausoleum.

        In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dayton Ostomy Chapter, 40 S. Perry St., Dayton, OH 45402.  Arrangements by Routsong Funeral Home, Oakwood.

 

Bello, Joseph Allen Bello, Jr.

        WEIRTON -- Joseph Allen Bello Jr., 38, of 3241 Orchard St. died today in Weirton Medical Center.

        The body has been removed to Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, where arrangements are pending.

 

Berg, Hazel Lillian Berg, nee Arnold

        Services for Hazel Berg, 93, were held Oct. 7, in Palmer-Pickering Chapel with Don Sing officiating.  Carol Meyer was organist; and Tina Dennis, soloist.  Interment was in Lebanon Cemetery.  Serving as escorts were James F. Aichley, Earnest Greek, Kenneth Ealy, Ronnie Blankenship, James and Rucker Arnold.  Services were conducted by Palmer-Pickering Funeral Home.

        Hazel Lillian, daughter of Carlos and Beatrice Kinkade Arnold, was born May 24, 1896 in Dahinda, Illinois and died Oct. 4, 1989 in Lebanon.

        Hazel became a part of the Lebanon community in 1917.  On Jan. 20, 1920 she was married to Emil Berg.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on May 28, 1968 and two brothers, Charles Raymond Arnold and Glen Andrew Arnold.

        Hazel was very active in many community affairs and was always helping people.  She was president of  PTA of Kapp School District and was a cook for the Rotary and Lions Clubs when they met at the old Community Center.  She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Spanish American War Veterans Auxiliary and was a 50-year* member of the WPFA.

        She is survived by two sons, Loyd of Springfield and Clyde of Hattiesberg, Miss.; two daughters, Bonita Randolph, Lebanon and Fern Rodgin, Modesto, Ca.; a sister, Jessie Walters, Lebanon; seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Beymer, Gladys Gertrude Beymer, nee Staib

        Gladys Gertrude Staib Beymer, 75, 67183 Pogue Road, St. Clairsville, died Wednesday in Wheeling Hospital.  She was born July 28, 1913 in Clarington, the daughter of the late Oscar and Fannie Kurtzman.

        She was a Methodist.

        Surviving are her husband, Roy Beymer; two sons, Richard of Woodsfield, Chester of Moundsville, W.Va.; two brothers, Glenn Staib and Paul Staib, both of East Liverpool; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

        Services and burial were held at the convenience of the family on Friday.  Arrangements by the Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Brookside.

 

Bledsoe, Haskel Clyde "Hack" Bledsoe

        Services for Haskel "Hack" Bledsoe were held April 7, in Colonial Chapel with Lee J. Elam officiating.  Music was by Rusty and DeLores Shadel.  Burial was in Lebanon Cemetery.  Serving as escorts were Gene Smith, Roscoe Anderson, Raymond Reid, Kenneth Hendrix, Ophie Barber and Charlie Waterman.  Honorary escorts were Richard Hooper, Wendell Cansler, Donald Coffman and John Travis.

        Haskel Clyde, son of the late Charles Marshall and Bertha Ellen Baysinger Bledsoe, was born Jan. 27, 1910 at Long Lane and died April 5, 1989 in St. John's Regional Health Center.

        In September of 1937 he was married to Gladys Kinkade.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith in February of 1947, and a sister, Hazel.  He professed his faith in 1950 and was baptized by Rev. Leo Kachel at Taylor Avenue Church of God.

        Hack enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He and his wife lived on the farm east of Lebanon on old highway 66 for 45 years, moving to Lebanon a year ago.

        He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two sons, Jim and Jerry; and two daughters, Joyce Donald and Joann Myers, all of Lebanon; a brother, Hershel of Kansas City, Ks.; a sister, Helen Waterman of Lebanon; and four great-grandchildren.*

*Submitter's Note:  Perhaps his "grandchildren" were omitted from this obituary.  When his wife died about 3 years later, her obituary said she left "seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren."

 

Boron, Warren L. Boron

       Warren L. Boron, age 80, of 1926 Sherrick Rd. SE, Canton, died Sunday morning at his home following a two-year illness.  He was a retired asphalt construction worker. 

       Preceded in death by a daughter, Nora Lee Burleson; two sisters; four brothers. 

       Survived by his wife, Lucy; one daughter, Mrs. Julius (Katherine) Mayle of Canton; four sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Becky Boron of Sarasota, FL, Wayne and Sherry Boron of Sistersville, WV, Raymond and Donald Boron, both of the home; 25 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Muli of Canton; one brother, Calvin Boron of New Matamoras. 

       Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave. with Rev. Daniel Wilfong officiating.  Burial in North Lawn Cemetery.  Friends may call Tuesday 1-3 and 7-9 p.m.

Britton, Mary Britton, nee Boyd

        LINTON -- Mary Britton, 93, of Linton, formerly of Switz City, died early Monday morning at Glenburn Home in Linton.

        Born June 26, 1896, in Greene County, she was the daughter of William and Ellie (Hinebrook) Boyd.

        Survivors include one daughter, Judith Boyd of Linton; two nieces; and two nephews.

        She was preceded in death by her husband Jesse Britton, who died in 1986.

        Graveside services will be 1 p.m. today at Switz City Cemetery with Gladys Hayes officiating.

        There will be no visitation.  Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.

 

Brown, Robert Junior Brown

        NILES -- Robert Junior Brown, 53, 616 Nebraska Ave., died at 7:05 a.m. Saturday in Warren General Hospital following a six-month illness.

        He was born March 19, 1935, in Woodsfield, Ohio, the son of Clyde C. and Stella J. Thompson Brown.

        He was a resident here for 16 years, coming from Woodsfield, where he was employed at Woodsfield Ice & Creamery.  He also worked for Nelson's Tree Service in Canfield before retiring several years ago.

        Survivors include his mother in Graysville, Ohio; four brothers, Donald of Graysville, Ronald of Dayton, William of Mineral Ridge and Melvin of Ithica, [sic] N.Y.; and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Bartlett, with whom he lived, Ms. Katherine Brown of Youngstown, Mrs. Ora Wallace of Warren, and Mrs. Alice Serasch of Warren.

       Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, where residents can call today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  Burial will be in Kerr Cemetery.

 

Burkhart, Elizabeth V. Burkhart nee Harper

Elizabeth V. Burkhart, 90, 56888 Temperanceville Highway, Barnesville, died Thursday morning in Barnesville Hospital. She was born October 13, 1898 at Columbus, daughter of the late Jay and Minnie Gates Harper.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; a brother; and three sisters.

Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Homer (Evelyn) Price of Temperanceville.

Friends will be received at the Campbell-Plumly Funeral Home, Barnesville, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Larry Anslow officiating.  Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Quaker City.

 

Burkhart, Joseph Burkhart

Joseph Burkhart, 94, of 56888 Temperanceville Highway, Barnesville, died Sunday in Barnesville Hospital.  He was born July 25, 1894 in Temperanceville, a son of the late Peter and Sara Jeffries Burkhart.
He was a retired coal miner, a Protestant, and a veteran of World War I.  He was also a member of the Barnesville DAV.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clem Burkhart; four sisters, Ida Watson, Victoria DeLong, Anna Cater, and Emma Gallagher Doudna.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Harper Burkhart; a daughter, Mrs. Homer (Evelyn) Price of Temperanceville; several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Campbell-Plumly Funeral Home, Barnesville, Tuesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where services will be hald at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Larry Aslow officiating.  Burial follows in Friends Cemetery, Quaker City, with militry graveside services.

 

Casey, Betty June Casey - nee Leach

SUMMERFIELD---Betty June Casey, 64, of Sarahsville R.D. 1, died at 5:55 P.M. Saturday (Dec. 20, 1986) at Bethesda Hospital, Zanesville, following a short illness.

       She was born June 6, 1922, in Noble County, a daughter of the late Ellis and Maude Carpenter Leach. Mrs. Casey was a housewife and a member of the Bates Hill Church of Christ.

       Preceding her in death were her son, Rex, an infant son, two infant daughters, a brother, sister and grandchild.

       She leaves her husband, Charles, whom she married June 23, 1939; a brother, Clinton Leach of West Lafayette; three sisters, Mrs. John (Nancy) Moore of Coshocton, Mrs. Carl (Edith) Bates of West Lafayette and Phyllis Leach of Mount Ephraim; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

       Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Tuesday at the Neff-Brubach Funeral Home, Summerfield, where services will be at 1 P.M. Wednesday with Evangelists Bernard Mason and Flavil Miller officiating. Burial will be in Mount Ephraim Cemetery.

 

Casey, Charles E. Casey

CALDWELL---Charles E. Casey, 71, of Sarahsville R. D. 1, died Monday (Feb. 27, 1989) at Bethesda Hospital, Zanesville following an lengthy illness.

       He was born Sept. 19, 1917, in Noble County, son of the late Joseph and Clara Casey. He was a retired employee of the former Imperial Clevite plant in Caldwell and a member of the Caldwell Eagles 2952.

       He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty J. Leach Casey, in 1987; two sons, including Rex Casey who died in 1977; twin daughters and one grandson.

       Mr. Casey leaves three sisters, Mrs. Neva Bichard of West Lafayette, Mrs. Betty Marks of Loudonville and Mrs. Mary Ellen Bartholomew of Crestline; four brothers, Robert Casey and Joseph Casey, both of Minnesota, Orville Casey of Sarahsville and Pete Casey of New Concord; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

       Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Wednesday at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, where services will be 1 P.M. Thursday with Bernard Mason officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Ephraim Cemetery.

 

Cates, Burl Cates

        Burl Cates, 75, Cisne, the owner of the former Cates Western Auto in Cisne, died at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 1989 in the Flora Care Center in Flora, Ill.

        He had been in poor health for some time.

                                                       Services Held

        Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday (today) at Cisne Cemetery with Rev. Ed. Endsley officiating.  Hosselton Funeral Home of Cisne was in charge of arrangements.

        Mr. Cates was born March 17, 1913 in Cisne, the son of Louis and Chloe (Carins)* Cates.

        On Nov. 25, 1935 he married Opal Brown in Fairfield.

        He was the retired owner of the Cates Western Auto Store in Cisne.  He was of the Baptist Faith and a member of the Cisne Masonic Lodge.

                                                        The Survivors

        Surviving him are his wife, Opal of Cisne; one daughter, Judy Mix of Farmer City, Ill. and three granddaughters, Jill Mix of Quincy, Ill., Jan of Normal, Ill. and Joy Mix of Peoria, Ill.

        He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Chapple, Ralph Chapple

        Tell City, Ind. -- Ralph Chapple, 68, died at 3:45 a.m. Saturday at Lincoln Hills Nursing Home.

        Surviving are his mother, Rose Chapple of Tell City; three sisters. Agnes Siscel and Betty Mayfield both of Evansville and Louise Gilliland of Tell City.

        Services will be at 2 p.m. EST Monday at Finch Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

        Friends may call from 2 to 8  p.m. today at the funeral home.

Christman, Paul PETE Christman

PAUL  CHRISTMAN,  84

       Paul ‘Pete’ C. Christman, 84, of 205 Roy Street, Woodsfield died at 8:30 a.m. Friday, January 13, 1989 at his home following an extended illness.

       He was born at Woodsfield, Ohio on September 7, 1904 a son of the late Samuel and Maude Montgomery Christman. He was a member of the Richfork Church of Christ near Woodsfield, Ohio, and a retired carpenter.

       He was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Christman, two brothers, Ronald “Dick” Christman and William Christman, and one sister, Adda Masters.

       Surviving are his wife, Mildred ‘Midge” Dearth Christman whom he married on September 7, 1944, and two daughters, Mrs. J.D. (Patricia) Hupp of Canton, Ohio and Mrs. William H. (Doris) Weddle of Woodsfield, Ohio, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

       Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield where services were held Sunday with Virgil Long officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

 

Christman, Rolland L. Christman

        Rolland L. Christman, 59, of Ontario died Aug. 4 at Ontario Community Hospital.

        An insurance adjuster with Ohio Casualty Insurance, he was a native of Upland and a lifelong Ontario resident.

        He was a Korean Conflict Navy veteran.

        He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ontario, and the San Gabriel Valley Insurance Claims Association.

        He is survived by his wife, Noel; a son, Eric Christman of Ontario; a daughter, Ilene Christman of Ontario; and a brother, Gene Christman of Berkeley.

        Friends may call at Draper Mortuary from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

        Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Draper Memorial Chapel.  Interment will be in Bellevue Memorial Park.

        Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Ontario.

        Draper Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

 

City, Benson A. City

        CLINTON -- Benson A. City, 73, of 1103 S. Eighth St. died at 8:10 a.m. Friday in Vermillion County Hospital.  He was a retired coal miner.  He was born Nov. 7, 1916, in Linton to Elmer City and Nellie Byers City.  Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Stewart City; two sisters, Beatrice Tow of California and Emma Jene Disney of Little Point; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Worthington American Legion.  Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Karanovich Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Elmore officiating.  Burial is in Walnut Grove Cemetery.  Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Claybaugh, Helen J. Claybaugh, nee Goldstein

        Helen J. Claybaugh, 76, of the Riverview Retirement Community, East Peoria, died there at 8:15 a.m. Sunday.

        Born Sept. 18, 1912, in Peoria to Charles H. and Gertrude M. Tippett Goldstein, she married Edgar F. Claybaugh on Feb. 6, 1943, in Los Angeles.  He died Sept. 21,1983, in Culver City, California.

        Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Genevieve Shoff of East Peoria; two nieces, Barbara Shoff of Metamora and Jeanne Hoerr of Lodi, Wis.; and two nephews, Robert McEvoy of Mansfield and Charles McEvoy of Peoria.

        Cremation rites will be accorded.  Burial of ashes will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Calif.  Wilton Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

        Nathan J. Clift, 26, of Lower Salem Route 2 died at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 1989, at his parent's home in Sarahsville.

        Mr. Clift was a self-employed truck driver.  He attended Zanesville city schools and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1981.  He was confirmed into the Methodist faith in December of 1974, and married Shari D. Forshey June 14, 1986.

        He was born Dec. 21, 1962, in Marietta Memorial Hospital.  He was the son of Charles B. and Sandra (Neuhart) Clift.

        Surviving are his parents; his wife and two daughters, Charlie Dee Clift and Cassandra Rose Clift of the home; six brothers, Darrin B., Keenan C., Charles T., Dwayne F., and Patrick M. Clift, all of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Anthony R. Clift of Sarahsville; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Forest Clift of Sycamore Valley; and his maternal grandmother, Waive Richardson of Zanesville.

        Services were held Wednesday at the Murphy-McCurdy Funeral Home in Caldwell with the Rev. William Pickenpaugh and the Rev. Stan Kashuba officiating.

        Burial was in Mount Ephraim Cemetery.

"Frank," 91, of South Huron Street, Wheeling, died Sunday in Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.  He was a retired roller of the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Oma Mae Hendershot Coughlan, on Feb. 17, 1978; two sons, Frank Jr. and Kenneth.  Surviving are a son, Harold of Wheeling; two daughters, Leona Wilkinson and Eileen Kunz, both of Wheeling; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.  Friends received 7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Brookside, where services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday.  Interment in Linwood Cemetery, Blaine.

        LINTON -- John A. Cox, 67, of Linton, died Tuesday at Greene County General Hospital.

        Born Aug. 26, 1922, in Greene County, he was the son of Floyd J. and Myrtle (Flake) Cox.  He retired in 1976 from the Milwaukee Railroad as a foreman and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.  He was a member of Frank Courtney American Legion Post No. 22, in which he was a life member.  He also belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars in Linton and Brotherhood of Maintenance Away.

        Survivors include his wife, Irma J. (Cunningham) Cox*; three daughters, Carolyn Floradis* of Linton, Terry Robinson of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Vicki Cox of Sacramento, Calif.; two sons, Floyd J. Cox* and Danny Cox*, both of Linton; three sisters, Thelma Henico, Helen Workman and Wilma Dove, all of Linton, and four grandchildren.

        He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

        Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Linton.  Military graveside rites will be conducted by Frank Courtney American Legion Post No. 22.

        Friends may call 3-9 p.m. today and prior to services Friday at the funeral Home.

Cunningham, was previously married to John’s brother Curtis who died in 1962.  I believe the children with * behind their names are Curtis’ children who were later raised by John and Irma.  Carolyn Floradis, the child mentioned above, died in 2012, and her obituary says:

        William Curry, 91, of Route 2, Sandyville, died Sunday evening, June 4, 1989, in Ravenswood.

        He was born in Jackson County, a son of the late John Henry and Kathryn Carpenter Curry.

        He was retired from Kaiser Aluminum, was a construction worker, and was a member of the Independence United Methodist Church, Sandyville.

        Survivors include one daughter Marjorie Zajdowicz of Richmond, Ohio; son, Paul L. Curry of Sandyville; half sisters, Ruth Street of St Marys, Jean Marshall of Spencer, Betty Knightstep of Dunbar; half brothers, John Henry Curry Jr. of Millwood, Charles Curry of Racine, Ohio; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren.

        He was preceded in death by his second wife, Mary, and his first wife, Ethel.*

        Services were held Tuesday at the Independence United Methodist Church, Straight-Tucker Funeral Home, Ravenswood, was in charge of arrangements.

        Francis "Wayne" DeVault, 47, of 193 Frederick St., Lexington, died Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Doctors Hospital.  His death followed a brief illness.

        Born in Colerain, Ohio, Mr. DeVault was associated with Hawkins Market Inc. as meat manager.  Surviving are his wife, Roxie K. Reischman DeVault; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Barbara Jo) Adams of Mansfield; a son David Wayne DeVault of Lexington; four brothers and two sisters.

        The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover.  Interment will be made in Dover Burial Park.  Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

 

Devore, Rose Edyth Devore, 96, 302 South Sycamore Street Woodsfield, died early January 6, 1989 at the Barnesville Hospital.  She was born Sept. 6, 1892 in Monroe County, a daughter of the late August and Matilda Kessor Frank.  She was a member of the Graysville United Methodist Church.

       She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest G. Devore, 1942, and also four brothers and two sisters.

       She is survived by one son, Delven W. Devore, Woodsfield; three grandsons, Lynn Devore, Reston, VA; David Devore, Solon; Richard Devore, Silver Lake; one great-grandson, Drew Devore, Solon.

       Friends were received at the Bouer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield Saturday where services were held Sunday with Rev. Stephen Sparling officiating.  Interment followed in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

F. Raymond Drake, 76, formerly of Barnesville, died Wednesday (April 12, 1989) at Phoneix. Ariz. He was born in Woodsfield, a son of the late William Garfield Drake and Jenny Bird Drake.  He was a Methodist.

Surviving are his wife, Ethel Drake; two sons, Ray of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Larry of Oxford, AL; three daughters, Doris Merritt, Bonnie Drake and Alice Ballabin, all of Phoenix; five brothers; Bill of Brecksville, WV, George and Charles, both of Barnesville, Thurman and Carl of Bardington, FL; six sisters, Myrtle Hudson of Barnesville, Lillian Huntsman of Columbus, Florence Little of West Lafayette, Edna Parker of Leesburg, FL, Betty Eikleberry of Streetsboro, and Kathryn Eikleberry of Ravenna; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Friends will be received at the Kelly-Kemp Funeral Home, Bethesda, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Monday, where services will be held at 11 am Tuesday with brother James Gallagher officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Bethesda.

        Clifford W. “Duke” Elmendorf, 71, of 200 W. Mount Pleasant Road, died at 3:40 pm Tuesday at Veterans Hospital in Marion, IL.

        He was a World War II Navy veteran and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1114.

        He retired in 1983 after 27 years at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

        Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Mary E; a daughter, Sarah J. Marshall of Fairfield, OH; two sons, David of Hawesville, KY and Chris of Evansville; two sisters, Ruth Noelle of Eldorado IL and Anna May Thiel of Harlingen TX; two brothers, Willard and Kenneth Elmendorf of Evansville; and four grandchildren.

        Services will be at 10:30 am Friday at Alexander Funeral Home North Chapel with burial in Alexander Memorial Park, where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.

        He was born in East Liverpool March 8, 1937, a son of the late Lloyd Francis Galloway and Cecile Maxwell Galloway Brand.

        A lifetime area resident, he retired in 1981 as a truck driver for Sentle Trucking Co. of Toledo.

        A  U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of Teamsters Union Local 428, Steubenville.

        He is survived by his wife, Linda Zacharias Galloway, whom he married May 6, 1961; five sons, Kevan* Galloway of East Liverpool, Donald L. Galloway of Toledo, Larry R. Galloway of Hamilton, and John W. Galloway and Cecil "Butch" Galloway, both at home; a daughter Tonyea L.         KEOSAUQUA -- William W. Garrett, 65, of Keosauqua died Monday, Nov. 6, 1989, at University Hospitals in Iowa City, where he suffered a stroke following heart surgery.  He was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Oskaloosa, the son of Arley W. and Thelma Mitchell Garrett.  On May 21, 1948, he was united in marriage with Miladean Bennett at Montezuma.

        He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1941, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and had lived in Montezuma, Monroe, Corydon, Albia, and in Keosauqua since 1979.  He operated Van Buren Body Shop in Keosauqua.  He was a member of Beer-Barker Post 113 American Legion in Keosauqua, Farm Bureau, and had been active in Little League baseball in Albia.

        He is survived by his wife;  three sons, Thomas of Adel, Kelly of Oskaloosa, and Scott of Davenport; two daughters, Dana Shehan of Fort Madison, and Theresa Major of Goldsboro, N.D.; eight grandchildren; his mother of Oskaloosa; three brothers, Robert of Carlsbad, N.M., Donald of Des Moines and Keith of Oskaloosa; and six sisters, Dorothy Hazlett of Kansas City, Mo., Arlene Salway of Oskaloosa, Betty Plate of Pella, Margie Black of Oskaloosa, Mary Lou Beyer of Searsboro, and Elaine Brown of Oskaloosa.

        The body was donated to the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Service of Des Moines.

        A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with Rev. Bob Patterson officiating.

        Friends may call at the funeral home, 1101 Broad Street in Keosauqua.  Burial will be at a later date in Purdom Cemetery in Keosauqua.

        She died at 3:50 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 1989, at Heritage House nursing home in Findlay.

        She was born Jan. 15, 1906, in Big Blane*, Ky., to Martin and Martha (Frahley) Steele.  She married Denton Dulaney, and he died.  She later married Don C. Clark, and he died.  She then married Richard Ghaster, and he preceded her in death.

        Surviving are two sons, James Walter Clark of Texas and Merritt Clark of Findlay; five daughters, Mrs. Ray (Debra) Dunson of Kenton, Margaret Ray of Kentucky, Mrs. Walter (Donna) Salyers of Arlington, Mrs. Ed (Sally) Ward and Maxine Peterman, both of Findlay; 39 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

        She was a homemaker, and a member of the Church of Christ in Christian Union.

        She was born in Marietta on Nov. 11, 1959, to Junior and Hester McGilton Leasure of Summerfield Rt. 1.  She was a 1978 graduate of Skyvue High School and Swiss Hills Vocational School.  She was presently a student at Washington Technical College of Marietta and was formerly employed at the Gateway IGA at Caldwell.  She was a Methodist by faith.

        In addition to her parents, she is survived by one son Daniel Richard at home; six sisters, Irene Tidd of Newport Rt. 1, Darlene Bettinger of Caldwell Rt. 1, Donna Rossiter of Delaware, Debbie Williams of Devola, Kandi McQuery of Florida, and Mechele Seevers of Newport Rt. 1; and one brother, Shawn of Summerfield Rt. 1.

        SALEM--Services for Wayne "Jim" Goodballet will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Irwin officiating.

         Mr. Goodballet, 47, 211 E. 4th St., died of a heart attack at 2:38 p.m. Friday in the emergency room of Salem Community Hospital.

        He was born Feb. 19, 1942, in Alliance to Donald F. and Gladys Pettit Goodballet, and lived in this area all of his life.

        Employed as  a machinist for Kennametal Inc. in Solon, Mr. Goodballet attended First United Methodist Church and was a member of American Slovak Club.

        He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Amy) Everhart of Virginia Beach, Va. and Miss Heather Goodballet of Salem, and a sister, Mrs. Merlin (Charlene) Brown of Lisbon.  Mr. Goodballet was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Jean Baker, and a brother, George Earl.

        Juanita Stuller Graber, 80, a resident of Blossom Nursing Center, died at 10:12 a.m. Saturday at Alliance Community Hospital.

        Mrs. Graber was born Sept. 17, 1908, in Alliance to Arthur and Elizabeth Stickle Davies, and was retired from the former Spring-Holzwarth Department Store.

        She had previously lived in Alliance for several years, before moving to Clearwater, Fla.

        Mrs. Graber was a member of First Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by husbands Beryle Stuller and Adolph Graber.

        Surviving are a son, Arthur Stuller of Beloit; a step-daughter, Jean Irwin of Canton; two stepsons, Donald Graber of Dunedin, Fla., and Robert Graber of Alliance; a sister, Mary Knori  of Alliance; three brothers, John Davies of San Jose, Calif., Richard Davies of East Rochester, and Edward Davies of Limaville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Graber was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Davies.

        Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gednetz Funeral Home in Sebring with the Rev. Alden H. Blake officiating.  Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park.

Graham, Etta B. Graham nee Morris

        WARREN--Etta B. Graham, 87, of 186 Nevada St., N.W., formerly of Rinard Mills, died at 7:43 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, in the Courtland Quality Care Nursing Home after a short illness.

        She was born Dec. 2, 1901, in Matamoras to Albert N. and Susanna Kinney Morris.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Second Christian Church at Warren where she was a member of the Tower Sunday school class.  On June 11, 1921, she was married to Bert P. Graham who died in 1977.

        She is survived by six daughters, Mr. Paul (Dorothy) Hupp and Mrs. Denzil (Betty) Holland, both of St. Marys, W.Va., Mrs. Fred (Marcelene) Olson of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Harlan (Ann) Woodward, Mrs. Thomas (Frances) Bohyer, and Mrs. Robert (Hazel) Moldovan, all of Warren; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one daughter; three sisters; and two half brothers.

        Services were scheduled for 2 p.m. today in the Robert H. Roberts Memorial Home, 180 Garfield Drive N.E., Warren, with the Rev. John Saunders officiating.  Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery at Vienna, Ohio.

        Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Second Christian Church at Warren.

        Services for Foy Velmer Guinn were held Dec. 21 at Colonial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Don Martin and Rev. Don Ballard officiating.  Burial was in Mt.         Foy Velmer Guinn, son of H.C. Guinn and Zelda Buttram Guinn was born July 30, 1908 in Wright County and died Dec. 19, 1989 in his home at Grovespring.

        On Oct. 29, 1930 he was united in marriage with Wilma L. Kinkade and to this union four children were born.

        Volmer professed his faith in Christ and united with the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Grovespring.  He was a farmer and also worked in construction.  He enjoyed fishing in his spare time.

        He is survived by his wife, Wilma, of the home; three sons, Darrell of Pomme de Terre, Harold of Grovespring and Jerry of Bates City; one daughter, Kay Earls of Conway; one sister, Dessie Edgerton of Nixa; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-  . . . .*

        Guy Bryan Gutberlet, 89, of Marietta Rt. 5, Moss Run, died at 12:04 a.m. Monday, June 19, in Heartland of Marietta.

        He was born June 4, 1900, in Lawrence Township to John and Caroline Mosser Gutberlet.  He had lived in Lawrence Township all his life.  He had been employed at Remington Rand and later at Marietta College.  He was a member of Moss Run Community Church, where he had been a Sunday School teacher and a member of the choir for many years.

        He married the former Bertha Blanche Patterson on Jan. 2, 1924.  She preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 1986.

        He is survived by one son, Glenn of Marietta; two daughters, Naomi Moore of Marietta and Mrs. Don (Betty) Frazey of Junction City, Kan.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Ray V. of Marietta.

        He was preceded in death by one daughter, Chloe Eva Gutberlet; one brother, Loss Gutberlet; and two sisters, Daisy Prunty and Lora Oliver.

        Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Moss Run Community Church with the Rev. Robert Byers and the Rev. Edwin McLeod officiating.  Burial will be in Moss Run Cemetery.  Friends may call at McClure-Schafer Funeral Home until noon on Wednesday and at the church for one hour prior to the services.

        Edward True Gutverlet,* 74, of Rt. 5, Marietta, died Saturday afternoon at Heartland of Marietta.

        He was born at Moss Run, Washington County.  He was the son of late Dloss** and Clara Strickler Gutverlet.

        He attended Moss Run Community Church.  He spent all of his life at Lawrence Township except for four years, during which he served with the U. A. Army in World War II.

       He was a graduate of Lawrence High School in 1934.  He was employed at Cardex until his retirement in 1980.  He organized the pony league and little leagues baseball programs at Dart and was a member of the Little Muskingum Grange.  On Jan. 1, 1947, he married Marjorie Tullius.

        He is survived by his wife; one son, Keith Gutverlet of Marietta; two grandchildren, Mitchell and Jill; two brothers, Clyde Gutverlet of Rt. 5 and Larry of Rt. 5; one sister, Margaret Cline of DeVola.

        Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the McClure Schafer Funeral Home with the Rev. Edwin McLeod and the Rev. Lee Tait officiating.  Burial will be in Valley Cemetery with military rites.  Friends may call at the funeral home.

        Mary Kathryn Halloran, 72, Greensburg, died at 11:15 p.m. Thursday at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

        Born on Feb. 20, 1917, in Decatur County, she was the daughter of Ed and Arie (Nation) Laws.

        She worked at the General Electric plant in Shelbyville for 21 years and was a member of Greensburg Methodist Church.

        On July 8, 1936, in Sandusky, Ind., she married Harold H. Halloran, who survives.

        Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Beverly Ann) Wolfe, Delaware; three granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.

        A brother preceded her in death.

        Services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, Greensburg.  Burial will be in South Park Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

        Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers, for Robert M. Hanlon, 63, of 949 Mathews Road, who died of liver disease Thursday morning in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center after a one-year illness.

        Mr. Hanlon was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Youngstown, a son of James and Marietta Laughlin Hanlon.  He retired in 1978 from the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. where he had worked for 33 1/2 years.  He was a foreman at the coke plant.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea.  He was member of the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church and a former member of St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3538, the Fraternal Order of Eagles 2536, the Sons of Italy Lodge 1122, and the St. Anthony Society.

        He leaves five daughters, Mrs. Sharon Keener and Miss Kathy Hanlon, both of Youngstown, Mrs. Pamela Pelar and Mrs. Mary Kay Tusinac, both of Struthers, and Mrs. Sheila Perry of Poland; three sons, Stephen of Austintown, and James and Robert Jr., both at home; four sisters, Mrs. Betty Bates and Mrs. Donna Janis, both of Canfield, Mrs. Harriet Best of Youngstown and Mrs. Dottie Walters of Campbell; five brothers, Charles and Jack, both of Youngstown, James of Chicago, and Raymond and George, both in Florida; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

        Three sisters, Miss Josephine and Miss Marietta Hanlon and Mrs. Rose Roby, and a brother, William are deceased.

        SEVILLE--Robert B. Hanzie, 65, died April 24 at Akron General Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.

        Born in Sterling, Mr. Hanzie resided in Seville for three years, previously residing in Wadsworth for 36 years.  He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II, and plant manager of the Wadsworth Foundry for Scovill Inc., retiring in 1985 with 34 years service.  He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1089 and American Legion Post 170, and enjoyed woodworking.

        Mr. Hanzie is survived by wife, Mildred L.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert H. and Kathy of Guilford Township; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Neil Peterson of Wadsworth; five grandchildren; sisters, Louise Moser of Seville and Mary Ann Myers of Wadsworth.

        The family will receive friends at the Hilliard Cox Mullaney Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth, TODAY, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to services, which will be Wednesday, 1 p.m., at the funeral home, Rev. Gerald L.         MANSFIELD -- William F. Harper, 74, of 348 Vennum Ave. died Monday evening in Mansfield Memorial Home after an extended illness.

        He was born Oct. 24, 1914, in New Martinsville, W. Va., living in Mansfield most of his life.  Mr. Harper was a retired employee of the Tappan Co.

        He was a member of the Mansfield Lodge 35 F&AM, AARP and American Legion McVey Post 16.  He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II.

        Surviving are a stepdaughter, Beverly Snavely of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Betty Uhlich Harper of Mansfield; a number of nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Jane Parr Harper of Mansfield.

        He was preceded in death by one brother, B. Lee Harper, and one sister, Marybelle Silver.*

        There will be no calling hours.  Private graveside services will be held in Mansfield cemetery.

        Arrangements are being handled by Wappner Funeral Directors.

              LOCAL CIVILIAN AIR INSTRUCTOR KILLED IN CRASH

              Marshall N. Hasson, 25, Dies When Plane Crashes In Alabama.

          Marshall N. Hasson, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Hasson, Sr., 417 North Second street, a civilian flying instructor, formerly at Parks Air College, was killed yesterday in the crash of a light army training plane six miles south of Tuscaloosa, Ala., the parents were notified by the public relations office of Van De Groot Field, Ala.

          For the past two and one-half years Hasson was instructor in the Air College at Tuscaloosa and lived thee with his wife and young son, Marshall N. Jr.  His parents here operate the Shiloh Valley Airport, six miles east of Scott Field, which is used by the Civil Air Patrol of this area.  All fields of this type and schools are operated under U. S. Army supervision.

          In the accident a flying cadet, whose name has temporarily been withheld, also lost his life.  The plane was demolished but did not burn.

          Hasson was an instructor under the Army Air Force’s training program at Alabama Institute of Aeronautics, Tuscaloosa, Ala., the past 2 1/2 years and previous to that time was co-operator of the Curtiss Flying Field, East St. Louis.

         Five weeks ago he was in Belleville to visit his parents at which time he told his father that 76 students he had trained were now in the flying service overseas.  He has a brother, George H. Hasson on overseas duty who is the flight engineer on a bomber.

          He was born in Sharon, Pa., and his wife's former home was Akron, Ohio.  Surviving him besides those previously named are the brothers and sisters: Frank L., Chicago; Mrs. Alice Atterbury, and Miss Janet, St. Louis; and Dorothy Dorris and Arthur, with the parents, here.

          The parents will leave for Akron, O., tomorrow where funeral services will be held.

        Lester A. Hodgkiss, age 61, of 2131 Amherst Rd. N.E., passed away Sunday morning at his home following a two year illness. 

        Lester was born in Wheeling, WV, and lived in Massillon since 1961.  He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, and a veteran of the Korean Conflict. 

        He is survived by his wife, Ruth of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Niki and Rock Yager; son and daughter-in-law, Neal H. and Karen Hodgkiss both of Jackson Twp; grandchildren, Kendra and Krista Hodgkiss, and Kyle Yager; mother Mame Hodgkiss of Morristown, OH; sisters, Mrs. Betty Lavitchka of St. Clairsville, Mrs. Fern Coleman, Mrs. Delores White; brother, Ray Hodgkiss all of Wheeling, WV.

        Born May 3, 1941, in Erie, he was a son of William and Irene (Rood) Hoplight and lived in the Madison area for the past six years.

        Mr. Hoplight was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and was a letter carrier in the Thompson Township area.  He retired from service in the U.S. Navy after 20 years.

        BROWNSVILLE, Ky. -- Estel "Windy" Jaggers, 72, of Wingfield died at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday at the Medical Center in Bowling Green after a brief illness.

        The Indiana native was a retired farmer, a World War II Army veteran, a member of Ollie United Baptist Church, Veteran of Foreign War Post 6937 and Disabled American Veterans.

        He was a son of the late Solomon and Laurie Jaggers.

        Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Otter Gap Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery.  Visitation is in progress at Gravil Funeral Home.

        Shad Leasure Jarvis 3 1/2 months, of Batesville, died September 30, 1989 at Barnesville Hospital.  He was born June 13, 1989 in Cambridge, son of Larry Jarvis, Wheeling. W.Va. and Diane Leasure of Batesville.

        Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one brother, Michael Leasure of the home; maternal grandparents, Marilyn and Carl Leasure, Batesville; paternal grandparents, William and Sandy Jarvis, Wheeling, W.Va.; great-grandparents, Charles and Evelyn Hendershot, Wheeling, and Sadie Jarvis of Utah; two uncles; three aunts; and one cousin.

        Funeral services were held on Tuesday from the Thorn-Eberle Funeral Home, Quaker City, with Rv. Johnny Jackson officiating.  Burial was made in Batesville Cemetery.

 

Johnson, Bessie H. Johnson   

Bessie H. Johnson, 84, of 336 E. South St., Barnesville, died Sunday, January 15, 1989, in Barnesville Hospital. She was born October 7, 1904 in Belmont County and was a daughter of the late James Allen and Melissa Jane Davis Huntsman:

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Homer Otto Stephens; her second husband, George Johnson; three brothers and four sisters.

Surviving are two sons: Arden Stephens of Uhrichsville and Homer Stephens of Martins Ferry; four daughters: Mrs. Geneva Barrett, Mrs. Mona Carpenter, Mrs. Alberta Robb, all of Barnesville and Stella Mae Johnson of the home; one brother, Earl Huntsman of Toronto; three sisters: Mrs. Goldie Swallie of Barnesville, Mrs. Pearl Burkhart of Belmont and Mrs. Bertha Morris of Ashland; 15 grandchildren, 30 greatgrandchildren and seven greatgreat-grandchildren.

Friends were received Tuesday at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home. Services are being held there Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Don Perks officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Cemetery.

 

Johnson, Effie G. Johnson, nee Ellis

        HUDSON -- Effie G. (Ellis) Johnson, 81, died Tuesday in Akron General Hospital.

        She was born in Eagleville Jan. 26, 1908, a daughter of Charles and Fanny (Pratt) Ellis.  She lived in Ashtabula 35 years, in Pompano Beach, Fla., 11 years, and for the past nine years, in Hudson.  She retired after 25 years of service from Farmer's National Bank, Ashtabula, where she was employed as a teller.

        Mrs. Johnson enjoyed poetry and wrote many poems; played the organ at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Pompano Beach; was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Hudson; and of Order of the Eastern Star, Ashtabula Chapter.

        Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Carl; a son, Carl Herbert Johnson of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Patricia Lucille Wiley of Hudson; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

        She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Ellis.

        Service is 2 p.m. Friday in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.  Interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Twinsburg.

        The family will receive friends 1 p.m. Friday until the time of service in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

        Memorials may be made to the building fund of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

Jones, Ruth Elvena Jones nee Lallathin

Ruth Elvena Jones, daughter of William and Florence Huffman Lallathin, born November 2, 1906, departed this life July 23, 1989. 

On February 16, 1928 she was married to Homer Jones. To this union were born three daughters and two sons. Hazel Barker of Sardis; Gladys Lytton of Bridgeport; James W. and Carl E.,died in infancy; Dorothy Bayes, Benwood Road, Sardis; ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Church of Christ, West Union, for many years and attended regularly as health permitted.

Services were held at the Rush Funeral Home, Sardis, with Alvin and Donald Thompson officiatiing on July 26. Interment in West Union Cemetery.

        She was born at Grantsville, a daughter of Lona Mae Lattea Starcher of Grantsville, and the late Harlan Starcher.

        In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, William B. Kelley; one son, Vernon Kelley of Mineral Wells; a daughter, Vera M. Hopkins of Parkersburg; three brothers, Daryl Starcher of Palestine, W.Va., Junior Starcher of Stumptown, W.Va., and Leo Starcher of Rockport; five sisters, Ruby Powell of Barberton, Ohio, Reda Warnick of Norton, Ohio, Lena Franks of Akron, Ohio, Emogene Poling of Grantsville and Janet Taylor of Normantown, W.Va.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

        Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Clyde Beard officiating.  Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery North.

        NEWCOMERSTOWN -- C. Scott Kinkade, 41, of 3173 Carson Highway, Adrian, Mich., formerly of Newcomerstown, died Sunday evening, Aug. 13, 1989, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Adrian.

        Born Feb. 19, 1948, in Cambridge, he was a son of William F. Kinkade of Cumberland and Charlene (Beiger)* Kindade [sic--Kinkade] Moore of Newcomerstown.

        A 1966 graduate of Newcomerstown he was employed with Bohn Aluminum in Adrian.  He also was a member of Ghost Riders Motorcycle Club.

        Kinkade was a former member of Kimbolton Methodist Church.

        Surviving in addition to his parents are a son, David Kinkade of Paulding; three daughters, Mrs. Kelly Edwards of Van Wert, Mrs. Fawn Watson of Georgia and Taletha Kinkade of Marrietta [sic--Marietta]; three stepbrothers, Larry Porter of Kimbolton, James Porter of Rockwell, Texas, and Craig Moore of Newcomersatown [sic--Newcomerstown]; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Linda) Arnold of Grove City; stepsister, Dixie Moore of Newcomerstown; three half brothers, Terry Kinkade of Burkburnette, Texas, Tony Kinkade of Byesville and Tim Kinkade of Derwent; a half sister, Mrs. Tammy Rudd of Byesville; stepmother, Vivian Kinkade of Cumberland and stepfather, Herbert Moore of Newcomerstown; and one grandson.

Kinkade, Violet Annie Roach Kinkade, nee Hunt

        Funeral for Violet Annie Kinkade, 87, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Lawton Ritter-Dalton Funeral Home Chapel with Leon Jones officiating.

        Mrs. Kinkade died Thursday in a local nursing home.

        Burial will be in Cache Cemetery.

        She was born Sept. 8, 1902, in Comanche County, Texas,and lived in Texas until moving to Cache when she was 15.  She was a resident of the Cache area until moving to Lawton six years ago.  She married William R. Roach, Oct. 26, 1918, in Cache; he died March 17, 1956.  She later married Orville A. Kinkade, Sept. 1, 1958 in Lawton.  She was a member of the Church of Christ in Cache.

        Survivors include her husband, of the home; a son, Charles Roach, Chelsea; two daughters:  Peggy Gibson, Chelsea; and Marie Huddleston, of Tulsa; a stepson, David Kinkade, Lawton; two stepdaughters:  Geneva Lynch and Juanita Weger, both of Lawton; 14 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.

        James Earl "Jim" Kruger, 55, of 225 Sherman, Lebanon, died early today (Wednesday) in the  Rolla Hospital.  The body has been cremated.  A memorial service will be announced at a later date.  Arrangements are under the direction of Palmer-Pickering Funeral Home.

        Jim was employed by Carthage Special Road District.  He has served in the U.S. Army.  On April 24, 1980 he was married to Sally Rose Ann Leslie in Los Angeles, Ca.  They had resided in Lebanon the past two years.

       She was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Monroe County, daughter of the late Barney and Grace Spence Leach. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Barnesville and VFW Post 2792 Auxiliary.

       She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Wehr in 1983 and one brother.

       Mrs. Wehr leaves one son, Larry Wehr of Barnesville; one daughter, Mrs. Harry (Janet) Van Horn of Barnesville; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Carpenter of Barnesville and Mrs. Cledith Carpenter of Summerfield; one brother, Jack Leach of Barnesville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

       Shirley A. Leach, 53, of 52327 Brownfield Hollow Road, Quaker City, died at 3:15 A.M. Tuesday, April 4, 1989, in University Hospital, Columbus, following a short illness.

       She was born Nov. 11, 1935, near Summerfield, daughter of the late John and Katie Wehr Wise.

       Surviving are her husband, Rex Leach of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Gary (Penny) Reed of Caldwell Route 4, Mrs. Ricky (Betty Ann) Howiler of Temperanceville and Mrs. Bill (Patty) Masciarelli of Summerfield; two sons, Jeff and Mike Leach both of the home; four brothers, Sylvan Wise and Robert Wise both of Summerfield, Royden Wise of Caldwell and Gerald Wise of Woodsfield; two sisters, Lavina Woodby of Tennessee and Sara Lou Snyder of Summerfield; and seven grandchildren.

       Mrs. Leach was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Paul and Junior Wise; and one grandson Donnie Howiler.

        He was born March 5, 1936, near Stafford, son of the late Fred and Senior Thompson Leasure.  He was a dozer operator for B&N Coal Co., Dexter City.  He was a Methodist by faith.

        Mr. Leasure leaves his wife, Patricia Brown Leasure, whom he married Oct. 29, 1962; two daughters, Lisa Leasure and Barbara Leasure, both of the home; one son, Merle Leasure of Columbus; two brothers, Jack Leasure and Bob Leasure, both of Stafford; and one grandson.

         Mose Lively, 81, of 52522 Baptist Ridge Road, Duffy, died Friday morning, November 24, 1989, in the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield.  He was born June 17, 1908, at Duffy, to Friend and Minnie Kerns Lively.  He was a retired employee of Viking Glass Co. in New Martinsville, W. Va., a veteran of World War II, a member of American Flint Glass Workers Union Local 510, and a member of V. F. W. Post 9930, Duffy.

         He was preceded in death by three brothers, David and George Lively, and one sister, Amelia Abrigg.

         He is survived by one sister, Mary Nething of Hannibal, and several nieces and nephews.

         Services were held Sunday at the Rush Funeral Home in Sardis with minister Jerry Yost  presiding. Burial followed in Harter Cemetery, Hannibal.

        ELYRIA -- Evelyn M. Martin, 71, a former resident of Washington County, died Saturday afternoon, March 25, in Elyria United Methodist Home after a 14-month illness.

        She was born July 2, 1917, at Schley.  Her home had been at Elyria for the past 23 years.  She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church at Elyria.

        She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Adrian (Jean) Shriver of North Ridgeville; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; her mother, Marie Mendenhall Kirkbride of Elyria; and two sisters, Mrs. Elva Ramsier of Grafton and Mrs. Vera Czuprun of North Ridgeville.

        She married Lyle D. Martin on Nov. 7, 1936.  He preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1971.  She also was preceded in death by one son, Richard Martin, in 1967.

        Services will be at 1 p.m Thursday in McClure-Schafer Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Spieth officiating.  Burial will be in Valley Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home from Wednesday morning until the hour of the services.

 

Matheny, Sarah Marie Matheny

Sarah Marie Matheny, 90, formerly of 1319 Cottage St., died at Griffeth Nursing Home Monday evening following a long illness.  She was born Dec. 31,1898, in Monroe County, the daughter of James and Mary Drake Smith.  Mrs. Matheny had been a resident of Ashland County most of her life.  She was a homemaker. She worked in the food service department at Ashland College several years ago. She was a member of Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1966.

Surviving are one son, Eugene Lucas of Chicago Heights, III.; one daughter, Marjorie Bone of Ashland; one stepson, Ralph Matheny of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Gertrude Bouchard of Columbus and Louella Smith of Wayne, Mich.; several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Anne Lallathin of Woodsfield.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Heyl Funeral Home with Travis Irwin officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.  Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home Thursday.  The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the activities program at Griffeth Nursing Home.

     Clarence G. Matz, 100, formerly of 614 Western Drive, Wooster, died January 24, 1989 at Horn Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for the last four years.
     Services were held January 27 at Custer Funeral Home, Wooster with Reverend Armin C. Bizer and Reverend Richard Wierwille officiating followed by burial at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
     Matz was born in 1888 to Phillip and Elizabeth (Ripper) Matz in Monroe County. He moved to Wooster in 1924 from Lewisville.  He worked for various oil fields, a sheet metal shop, Rubbermaid, and later for the City of Wooster at the Sewage Treatment Plant.  He was an Army veteran of World War I, a 70-year member of the Woodsfield Masonic Lodge, and WWI Legion in Wooster, active in I.O.O.F., and a member of Trinity United Church of Christ.
     He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Kaye) Hess and Mrs. Carl (Betty Lee) Byler, both of Wooster; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
     His wife, Elsa Harmon Matz, died in 1984. Two brothers and four sisters also died previously.

Matz, Willie T. Matz

     Willie T. Matz, 79, of 1011 Orange Road, Ashland, died June 19 in the Samaritan Hospital in Ashland following a short illness. A native of Monroe County, he was born June 08, 1910, the son of Charles and Mary Ann Neibch Matz. A resident of Ashland for the past 32 years, he was a former employee of the Eagle Rubber Company retiring in 1972. Mr. Matz was a member of the Steele Avenue Church of Christ in Ashland.

     On Nov. 08, 1933 he was married to Nellie L. Morris who pre-deceased him on Aug. 13, 1987.

     Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Normalee) Wilson and Mrs. Troy (Bertha) Cranmore, both of Ashland; two sons, Walter of Ashland and Clyde of Polk; 17 grandchildren; one brother, Harry Matz of Dalton.

     Services were held June 21 at 2p.m. From the Steele Avenue Church of Christ with Travis Irwin, minister, officiating. Burial was in the Ashland County Memorial Park.

        John W. 'Jack' McMenamee, 55, passed away suddenly July 5 at Akron City Hospital.

        He was born in Jacksonville, Ohio, and lived in the Akron area since 1941. Mr. McMenamee was a reactor operator for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 35 years, a member of the Army Navy Garrison 273, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

        He was preceded in death by parents, Leon and Audrey; brothers, Timmy and Kelly, and is survived by his wife, Wilma S.; son, Timmie N. of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Gregg Gertz, Rachelle and Jerry Humphries, all of Akron; brothers, Keith of Ravenna, Robby of Lakemore, and George of Cleveland; sister, Betty Haser of Portage Lakes.

        Clarence F. Mercer, 86, of Reynoldsburg, died at 6:55 p.m. Friday, April 7, in the Louis A. Johnson Medical Center after an extended illness.

        He was born in Middlebourne Aug. 23, 1902, a son of the late Emil H. and Mary Wells Mercer.

        His wife, Myrtle, preceded him in death.

        Surviving are one sister, Gladys Lancaster, Paden City, one cousin, Mont* E. Harris, Reynoldsville, with whom he made his home for the past 23 years and several nieces and nephews.

        He was also preceded in death by one brother, Clyde and a half brother, Jim.

        Mr. Mercer was a veteran, having served in the United States Army from Aug. 21, 1942 to March 17, 1945, when he was discharged from the convalescent hospital in Fort Story, Va.  He was Protestant.

        Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the Margaret McGlumphy Mortuary, 260 East Main St.  A graveside service will be held in the West Virginia National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev.         Former chief of staff of the Morgan County Memorial Hospital, Dr. Robert J. Miller Sr., 80, 5245 State Road 37 South, died Wednesday, March 8, 1989, at Bloomington Hospital natural causes.

        The son of Roscoe and Leona Kohlmeier Miller, he was born Oct. 23, 1908, in Somerville.  On Sept. 5, 1936, he married Burnice Snyder, and she survives.

        Mr. Miller graduated from Indiana University in 1933, Indiana University Medical School at Indianapolis in 1937, and in 1938 served his internship at Detroit, Mich.  In 1940 he opened his office for practice in Evansville and continued there until 1961.  He served six months at the Fort Peck, Mont., Indian Reservation under the Kennedy Administration.

        In 1961, Dr. Miller came to Martinsville and opened his office in Paragon, retiring on July 4, 1976.  During World War II, Dr. Miller served in the U.S. Air Force with the Flying Tigers in China.  For three years the captain was head of the field hospital there.

        Dr. Miller attended the Eastview Christian Church, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Moose Lodge, Theta Chi and Phi Beta Pi fraternities, Indiana University Alumni Association and Indiana Medical Association.

        The 2:30 p.m. Saturday funeral will be at Cure & Hensley-Costin Funeral Chapel.  The Rev. Gary Cornwell will officiate.  Burial will follow at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.

        Friends may call 3 to 9 p.m. today.

        The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct graveside rites.

 

Miller, Floyd F. Miller

        CHINOOK -- Floyd F. Miller, 72, a retired Montana Power Co. employee, died Tuesday of natural causes at a Havre rest home.

        His funeral is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Edwards Funeral Home with burial in Kuper Memorial Cemetery in Chinook.

        Born at Hampton,* N.D., he attended schools in Savoy and graduated from high school in Harlem.

        In 1941, he married Dorlene Friede at Great Falls.

        He was a World War II Army veteran.  He worked for 32 years in the gas fields south of Chinook and retired from MPC in 1982.

        Survivors include his wife; children, Larry of Harlem, Lorraine Schwenke of Landusky, Judy Brady of Wyoming, Marilyn Huft of Plentywood; a sister, Nora Anderson of North Dakota; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

        Matamoras -- Ada Marie Morris, 86, of Matamoras, died early Saturday morning at Selby General Hospital.

        She was born March 8, 1903 in Matamoras to Charles Perry and Matilda Regina Schoen Sine.  She was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church at Sardis.

        She is survived by five sons, Louis and Wilfred, both of Matamoras, Paul and Charles of Marietta, and James of Newport; eight daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Ruth) Kehl, and Mrs. Larry (Janice) Carver, of Reno; Mrs. Dean (Barbara) Berry of Marietta, Mrs. Howard (Mildred) Steinhoff of Rinard Mills, Ohio, Mrs. Mack (Shirley) Haessly of Newport, Mrs. Frank (Vivian) Farnsworth of Lowell, Mrs. Louis (Mary Ann) Thornton of Sebring, and Mrs. Victor (Dorothy) Ogas of Matamoras; two sisters, Mary Edwards and Cora Graham, both of Matamoras; and 50 grandchildren and 72 great-grandchildren.

        She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Newton Morris in 1974.

        Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hadley Funeral Home, Matamoras, where rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today.

        Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30a.m. Tuesday at St. John Bosco Catholic Church with the Rev. John Mucha officiating.  Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

        Memorials may be made to the Newport and Lowell fire departments.

Morris, Helena Morris, nee Wagner

        Helena Morris, 85, of Marietta Rt. 9, Oak Grove, died Saturday morning, Aug. 12 in Selby General Hospital.  She had been a resident of Marietta Convalescent Center for the past eight months.

        She was born Sept. 6, 1903, in Stanleyville to Smith J. and Laura E. Kidd Wagner.  She had spent almost her entire life in the Oak Grove neighborhood.  She was a member of First Baptist Church and the 4-Square Sunday School Class and had been a teacher in the Sunday school.  She was past president of the Oak Grove Missionary Society and Muskingum Garden Club.

        She is survived by her husband, Oval Morris, whom she married Oct. 18, 1924; one son, Pat of Williamstown; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

        Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in McClure-Schafer Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Shuler and the Rev. Clifford Nuss officiating.  Burial will be in Valley Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home.

        James Morris, 73, Canton, formerly of Monroe County, died Friday* morning in Aultman Hospital, Canton. He was born October 28, 1915 in Monroe County, the son of the late Willard and Mary Taylor Morris.

        He was a retired security guard of Pinkerton Security System, Canton, a member of Canton Baptist Temple, American Legion Post 768 and A U. S. Army veteran of World War II.

        He was preceded in death by two brothers, Oscar and Otto Morris.

        Surviving are his wife, Marie Persons Morris; a son, Herbert of Canton; four brothers, Spencer of Canton, David of Newark, Elijah and Floyd, both of Somerton; three sisters, Shirley Kurtz of Barnesville, Hazel Brooks and Maggie Kurtz, both of Newark; several nieces and nephews.

        Friends will be received at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville, noon to 9 p.m. today, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday with Evangelist James Gallagher officiating. Burial will be in Boston Cemetery.

        Graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 768.

Nalley, Theodore H. Nalley

        Theodore H. Nalley, 66, of 7729 Rettig Rd., Galion, died at 4:10 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 1989 in the Galion Community Hospital Emergency Room after a long illness.

        Born Aug. 6, 1923 in Martins Ferry, he was the son of Harry Nalley, deceased, and Freda (Bloominhaur) Nalley Glasser, who survives in Wheeling, W. Va.  He was married March 25, 1978 to Ruth A. Weaver, who survives.

        Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Cheryl) Poole, Painesville, a son, Sgt. Raymond E. Young Jr., United States Marine Corps, Irvine, Calif., three grandchildren and a sister, Elsie Roof, New Carlisle.  He was preceded in death by two sons.

        Mr. Nalley had worked as a conductor and was a 38-year employee of Conrail.  A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of VFW Post 2920, Crestline, American Legion Scarborough Post 243, Galion, and Polk Township AMVETS Post 1979.  He was also a member of Galion Moose Lodge 303, U.T.U. Railroad Union and the American Association of Retired Persons.

        Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Richardson-Davis Funeral Home, Galion.  Rev. Monty Trammel will officiate.  Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. in Union Cemetery, Steubenville.

        Friends may call at the funeral home today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.  American Legion services will be conducted at the funeral home at 7 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

        Charles Harvey Nipper, 65, of Greer, South Carolina, died Tuesday, June 20.

        Born in Okmulgee on Feb. 20, 1924, he was the son of Opal McNeil Nipper of Okmulgee and the late John Bert Nipper.  He formerly lived in Rocky Mount, N.C., Barger, Texas and Bartlesville.

        Mr. Nipper was director of Employee Relations for Phillips Fibers Corporation before his retirement.

        He was a member and an elder of Grier Memorial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

        He is survived by his wife, Violet Wallace Nipper of the home; one daughter, Linda Underwood of Greenville, S.C.; a son, Charles (Mike) Nipper of Houston, Texas; a brother, Lewis Eugene Nipper of Okmulgee; and five grandchildren.

        Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 23, at Grier Memorial A.R.P. church by Rev. James T. Corbett.  Burial will be in Graceland East Cemetery.

        The family will receive friends Thursday, from 7 until 8:30 p.m., at the Macket Mortuary in Greenville, S.C.

        Roger R. Palmer Sr., 44, of 15 East 44th St., Shadyside, died Thursday in Tacoma, near Barnesville.  He was born Sept. 30, 1945 in Jacobsburg, a son of the late Everett "Banjo" and Lula McHenry Palmer.

        He was the owner of Roger's Plumbing, Shadyside, and a Protestant.

        Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Coss Palmer; a son, Roger Jr. at home; a daughter, Christina at home; four brothers, John and Richard, both of Powhatan Point, Ronald of Shadyside and Everett of Bellaire; three sisters, Alice Mae Higgins of Amlin, Frances Sall of Ohio and Betty May of Powhatan Point.

Piatt, Pearl W. Piatt nee Hissom

       Woodsfield – Pearl W. Piatt, 83, of Main Street, Lewisville, Died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 1989 at the Barnesville Hospital following an extended illness.  She was a member of Woodsfield First Free Methodist Church.  Born March 15, 1906 in Middlebourne, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late David and Margaret (Leach) Hissom. 

       Her husband, Allorenza Piatt, preceded her in death in 1965.

       Mrs. Piatt is survived by three sons, Arthur Piatt of Ashland, Ohio, and Archie Piatt and Paul Piatt, both of Lewisville; two half-sisters, Dorothy Crosby of New Concord and Mary Nalley of Graysville; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

       In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, one granddaughter, one step-daughter, one step-son and one half-sister.

       Friends may call 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Watters Funeral Home in Woodsfield.  Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Pastor Dave Glass officiating.  Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Route 1, Graysville.  [Submitter’s note:  In Pearl's obit, Dorothy Crossley (not Crosby) and Mary Nalley are step-daughters and not half sisters.         Charles V. Polen, 78, of 16168 SR 145, Lewisville, died early Sunday evening, Oct. 15 at the Barnesville Hospital.  He was born Feb. 14, 1911 at Woodsfield, a son of the late William C. and Minnie Buchanan Polen.

        He was a retired plumbing and electrical contractor; a member of Lewisville Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge No. 189 of Woodsfield; a 32nd Degree Mason; a member of the Scottish Rite of Cambridge, the Aladdin Temple of Columbus, the Monroe County Shrine Club, Monroe County Park Board, and the Regional Planning Commission.

        He was preceded in death by one brother, Clelland R. Polen in 1986.

        He is survived by his wife, Lela DeVoe Polen of Lewisville; one sister, Mrs. Geneva Paulus of Woodsfield; several nieces and nephews.

        Friends were received at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield where services were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 17 with Rev. Lester Flauhaus officiating.  Interment was in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.  Mason Lodge service was at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the funeral home.

 

Pope, Dorothy Mae Pope, nee Cobb

       A graveside service for Dorothy Mae Pope, 62, of Ukiah will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ukiah cemetery.  The Rev. Jerry Miranda will officiate.  Visitation is at Eversole Mortuary today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Pope died Sunday, July 16 at home.

        She was born Sept. 19, 1926 in Arkansas and lived in Ukiah 39 years.  She retired as a psychiatric technician from the Mendocino State Hospital and belonged to the California State Employees' Association.

        She is survived by her husband, Ralph Pope of Ukiah; children Carol Faye Scott and Patricia Ann Smith, both of Ukiah, and Vernon Edwin Smith Jr. of Oroville; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a sister, Jessie Faye Branch of Mt. Olive, N.C., and numerous nieces and nephews.

        Memorial contributions to the Challenge Garden Project, 266 E. Smith St., are preferred by the family.

        Shirley E. Pope, 48, 846 S. Tompkins St., died Saturday at Indiana University Medical Center after a two-year illness.

        Mrs. Pope had been a clerk at K-mart, retiring in 1987.

        A daughter of Arthur and Gail (Dillinger) Trout, she was born June 19, 1941, in Pennsylvania.  She was married Oct. 15, 1966,* to Ted Pope, who survives.

        Also surviving are her mother and stepfather, Richard and Gail Wainscott, Manilla; daughters, Mrs. Sumpter (Robin) Holdren, Shelbyville, and Sheila Pope, Sterling Heights, Mich.; sons, Teddy Pope, Jacksonville, N.C., John Thomas "J.T." Pope, Shelbyville, and Rex Pope, Okinawa, Japan; a sister, Mrs. Mike (Nancy) Smith, Shelbyville; and brothers, Richard Trout, Lexington Park, Md., James Trout, Rushville, and Glenn Trout, Greensburg, Penn.

        Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Murphy Mortuary with the Rev. William Horner officiating.  Burial will be in Lewis Creek Baptist Cemetery.

        Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

        Fay Allen, son of Everett R. and Grace Edith Kinkaid* Porter, was born March 1, 1934 in Lebanon and died March 31, 1989 at his home.  On May 9, 1958 he was married to Georgia Ruble.  He was preceded in death by his son, Everett.

        In addition to his wife, Georgia, he is survived by three sons, Allen and David of Berwick Maine, and Paul of Lebanon; a daughter, Barbara Carson of Berwick; his parents, seven brothers, Roy, David, Bob, Kenny, Jim, Bill and Sherman, and two sisters, Wilma Bowling and Freda Berry, and his parents, all of Lebanon; also seven grandchildren.

        Fay grew up in the Lebanon area and served for nine years in the United States Army.  He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

Porter, Lois Wilma Porter, nee Edwards

Howe, vocalist, and Gretchen Brown, accompanist, performed "Amazing Grace" and "The Last Mile of the Way."  Burial was in Bear Thicket Cemetery.  Serving as escorts were Roy Brown, Richard Porter, James Scott, Jimmy Porter, Ron Rogers and Roger Smith.

        Lois Wilma Porter, daughter of Willie and Thelma Rogers Edwards, was born September 25, 1934 in Camden County, Missouri.  She departed this life July 11, 1989 in Breech Medical Center, Lebanon, at the age of 54 years, 9 months and 16 days.

        In 1955 she was united in marriage to John Porter.  She was preceded in death by her father and two half-brothers.

        Lois is survived by her husband, John, of the home; her mother, Thelma George, Lebanon; two sons, John Porter, Kansas City Missouri and James Porter, Conway, Missouri; two daughters, Betty Scott and Pauline Smith, both of Lebanon; one step-son, Danny Porter, Lebanon; two step-daughters, Connie Jones, Lebanon and Jeanie Barker, Stoutland, Missouri; one sister, Geraldine Brown, Lebanon; a number of grandchildren; also a host of other relatives and friends.

        She made her home in the Lebanon area all of her life.  She accepted Christ as a youth and attended the Pentecostal and Baptist Churches.

        Lois enjoyed sewing, crocheting and taking care of her family.

        She will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother and a caring friend.

 

Powell, Audrey B. Powell, nee Harper

        CUYAHOGA  FALLS -- Audrey B. Powell, 66, died August 13.

        She was born in Meigs County, Ohio, and had lived in Cuyahoga Falls over 30 years. She was a retired teacher with the Cuyahoga Falls Public Schools, a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, a lifetime P.T.A. member and a Martha Jennings Scholar.

        She is survived by her husband, Ralph E.; son, David R. Powell of California; daughter, Cynthia A. Davis of Palo Alto, Calif.; one grandson; and sister, Margaret Spenser of Pomeroy, Ohio.

        Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, from St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 2121 Sixth St., Cuyahoga Falls, Pastor John H. Herrlinger officiating. Interment 2 p.m. Wednesday, Columbiana County Memorial Park, East Liverpool, Ohio. Carroll and Tony Rodgers Standiford.  She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, New Martinsville where she was a trustee; a member of OES 73, Sistersville.  She was preceded in death by a son, William Rodgers Powell in 1952; a daughter Elizabeth Ann Powell, on 1955.

        Surviving are her husband, William A. "Tony" Jr.; three sons, John Carroll of Paden City, Jan Courtney of New Martinsville and David Whitney of New Martinsville; a brother, William E. Standiford of New Martinsville; four grandchildren.

        Born Sept. 8, 1939, in Austinburg Township (Eagleville), she was a daughter of Frederick O. and Esther J. (Lintela) White.  A former Ashtabula resident, she moved to Melbourne, Fla. in 1981.

        She married Thomas D. Richcreek Aug. 12, 1961, in Austinburg Township.

        Mrs. Richcreek was executive secretary for Southeast Bank, Melbourne, and was a member of Harris Memorial Presbyterian Church, Ashtabula.

        Survivors include her husband; son, Christopher of Orlando, Fla.; her mother of Austinburg Township (Eagleville); and sister Shirley Clemson of Jefferson.

        She was preceded in death by son Thomas A., April 16, 1971; and her father.

        Service is 1 p.m. Friday at Fleming Funeral Home Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Rev. Richard George of Harris Memorial Presbyterian Church officiating.  Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.

        He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Etta Herlan Richey; one stepdaughter, Thelma Richey; one brother, Kenneth Schultheiss; and one sister, Sylvia Schultheiss.

        He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Frank (Thelma) Martin, Mrs. Harold (Lola) Byer of Marietta and Mrs. Clayton (Bernice) Lemon of Rock Hill, S.C.; and two brothers, Bernard of Reno and William of Williamstown.

        Henry S. Schwartz, 74, of 319 Matthew St. died at 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, in Marietta Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

        He was born May 1, 1915, at Stanleyville in Fearing Township, to Samuel P. and Emma Williams Schwartz.  He graduated from Marietta High School in 1933 and later served in the U.S.Army as a paratroooper during World War II in Australia, New Guinea and Panama.

        His home has been in Marietta since 1945.  He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, a member of American Legion Post 64; Washington County Post 5108 Veterans of Foreign Wars; Pioneer City Chapter 52, Disabled American Veterans; Hamar Lodge 390 F & AM; American Union Chapter No. 1 RAM; Marietta Council No. 78 R&SM; and Marietta Commandary no. 50 Knights Templar.

       On May 6, 1944, he married Bernice Oliver, who survives with two daughters, the Rev. Nancy Schwartz of Belpre and Shirley Schwartz Klosek of Jacksonville, Fla.; one granddaughter, Cathy Klosek; one brother, John Schwartz of Marietta; three sisters, Mary Lou Burnworth and Glenda Johnson of Marietta and Alice Schwartz of Columbus; two half-brothers, James Schwartz of Cortland and Charles Schwartz of Cardington; two half-sisters, Audrey Keller of Marietta and Goldie Yates of Belpre; and a number of nephews and nieces.

        He was preceded in death by his brother Frank Schwartz Sept. 6, 1989; a sister, Ruth Pritchard and two half-sisters, Edna Best and Grace Durose.

        Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Christ United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karl Kumpf and the Rev. Dale Beittel officiating.  Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

        Richard R. "Porkey" Smith, 67, of Washington Street, Newell, died at 7:53 a.m. today, March 14, 1989, at City Hospital following a lengthy illness.

        He was born in East Liverpool Sept. 29, 1921, a son of the late Charles Smith and Marian Smith Rose.

        A 42-year employee of the Homer Laughlin China Co. before retiring, Mr. Smith has resided in Newell since 1984.  He was graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1941, and had served with the U.S. Army during World War II.  He was an honorary member of the Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics and Allied Workers International Union, a member of East Liverpool Masonic Lodge 681, and a 32nd degree member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Steubenville.

        Survivors include his wife, Esta Mercer Smith, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Mark (Robin) Haynes of Fredericksburg, Va.; three sons, John T.  Smith of Smithville, Ohio, Terry L. Smith, at home, and Jeffrey S. Smith of East Liverpool; two sisters, Mrs. James (Vera) Reed of Orrville, Ohio, and Mrs. Donna Briggs of Hanoverton; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

        RANDOLPH -- Arzy G. Stackpole, 76, of 2223 Ranfield Road, died Wednesday at Altercare Nursing Home in Ravenna after a long illness.

        Born Aug. 5, 1912 in Pine Grove, W. Va., he was the son of Amos and Stella Stackpole.

        Mr. Stackpole worked for the Lawson Milk Company as a maintenance person before retiring in 1974 after 28 years of service.  He also was a deputy with the Portage County Sheriff's Department until 1982.

        Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Staley); sons Clifford and Robert both of Randolph; daughter, Shirley Smithberger of Rootstown; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Donald of New York, and Paul and Richard both of Columbus; and sisters, Gladis Ingold of Houston, Dare Reister of Alliance and Betty Boggs of Bakersfield, Calif.

        Services are set Tuesday for Paul W. Staib Sr., 77, formerly of Bloomfield Road, East Liverpool, who died at 5:45 p.m. Friday, June 16, 1989, at Hutton Nursing Center II of Salem  following a lengthy illness.

        He was born Jan. 3, 1912, at Clairington,* Ohio, a son of the late Oscar J. and Fannie Staib.

        A resident here most of his lifetime, Mr. Staib was a molder 28 years at the former Crucible Steel Co. before retiring in 1968.  He was a member of the Northside Church.

        His wife, Margaret Trembly Staib, whom he married Oct.12, 1932, died Aug. 16, 1982.

        Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. James (Phyllis) Swanson of Riverside, Calif.; two sons, Eugene Staib of Cuyahoga Falls and Paul W. Staib Jr. of Salem; a brother, Glenn L. Staib of East Liverpool; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

        He worked for Cummins Engine Co. for 37 years, retiring Jan. 8, 1982.  Tiemeyer was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Cushman Club of America and Vintage Club, and was a phonograph collector.

        Born Jan. 8, 1927, in Bartholomew County, Tiemeyer was the son of Martin F. and Ada Volland Tiemeyer.  He married Dorothy Wimmer on July 12, 1953, at Milroy.  She survives.

        Also surviving are daughters, Donna M. Tiemeyer of Columbus and Staff Sgt. Anita S. Tiemeyer of San Antonio, Texas; sisters, Betty Unger and Martina Tiemeyer of Columbus; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

        TALLMADGE--Raymond Wesley Tuel, 79, died Feb. 19, 1989 in Lakeland, Fla.

        Mr. Tuel retired in 1972 as a millwright after 13 years service at the Terex plant, a division of General Motors.  Prior to that, he worked for Kent Machine in Cuyahoga Falls.  He was born in New Matamoras, and lived for 50 years in the Tallmadge area.  He was a member of the Chapel in University Park and Calvary Baptist Church in Lakeland, Fla.

        He was preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Tuel; three sisters; and two brothers; and is survived by wife, Melba; sons and daughters-in-law, John and LaVerne Tuel of Brimfield, Richard and Faye Tuel of Missouri; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Bunting Waggle; one daughter, Mrs. Harry (Susan) Pfeffer, Quaker City; two grandsons, Timothy and Matthew.

Calling hours are being held today, August 23, from 2-4:00 and 7-9:00 p.m. at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home. Funeral services are slated Thursday at 1 o’clock with Evangelist James Gallagher officiating. Burial will be made in Crestview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh, One Children’s Place, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222.

 

Walton, Merle Wilson Walton

        Merle Wilson Walton, 70, of Lost Bridge, died Thursday, March 9, at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville.

        Born July 2, 1918, at Delmont, Pa., to Joseph Walton and Ken- ____________________,* he moved here from Collinsville, Okla., in 1982.  He was a member of the Community Lost Bridge Chapel.  A retired Navy lieutenant commander, serving in the American, Asiatic-Pacific and China and Philippines areas during WWII.  He received the Good Conduct, National Defense, and Presidential Unit Citation medals.  He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, and VFW Post 3077.

        Survivors are his wife, June Walton; two sons, Rick Walton of Anahiem, Calif., and Merle W. Walton Jr., of Havasu City, Ariz.; four daughters, Diane Goodman of Fernley, Nev., and Pricilla Walton, Jennifer Rochte and Heidi Walton, all of California, and a brother, Clifford Walton of Delmont, Pa.

        Funeral is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rollins Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Clifford Thaden officiating.  Burial is to be in Veterans Cemetery at Fayetteville, with full military honors.  Visitation is set for 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

        Edna C. Ward, age 56, Sunshine Apartments, Woodsfield, died late Sunday night Aug. 27, 1989 at her home.  She was born May 22, 1933 at Woodsfield, a daughter of the late Pearl and Lorena Christman Sims.

        She was preceded in death by 1 infant son, Kevin Lance Ward.

        She was a member of the First Baptist Church Woodsfield.

        She is survived by 3 daughters, Sheila Ferguson and Terri Pierce both of Woodsfield, Sheryl Cliff [sic-CLIFT] of Barnesville; 1 son, Francis Ward, Woodsfield; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Gerald Sims, Woodsfield; 3 sisters, Mary Jean Price of McConnelsville, Vera Scott of Pittsburgh, PA, Ruth Kennedy of Arizona.

        Friends were received at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home Woodsfield where services were held Thursday with Rev. Marvin Robbins officiating.  Interment will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery Woodsfield.

 

Young, Charles A. Young

        HOLMESVILLE -- Charles A.Young, 87, of Ohio 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the home of his son in Wooster, following a brief illness.

        Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Johnston-Schlabach Funeral Home in Shreve with the Rev. Jeff Starkey officiating.  Burial will be at Nashville Cemetery.

        Friends may call Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

        Memorial contributions may be made to the Wayne County Heart Fund, P.O. Box 267, Wooster 44691.

        He was born in Monroe County in 1902 to Henry and Anne Weber Young and married Mary E. Fishburn Feb. 16, 1932.  She died Dec. 12, 1984.

        He was a retired farmer and a 50-year member of the Clinton Grange.

        Surviving are three children, Gerald W. of Wooster, Barbara A. Price of Loudonville and Betty J. Phillips of Wooster; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one brother, Ernest of Loudonville.

        Two brothers, Raymond and George, a grandson and two great-grandchildren died previously.

 

Zwick, James Joseph Zwick

James J. Zwick, age 56, formerly of Sherman Church Ave. SW, and more recently of 152-43rd St. SW, Canton, was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday at Guernsey Memorial Hospital in Cambridge after having an apparent heart attack.  He was born in Lewisville, OH and had lived in Canton since 1951. Employed by the Timken Company with 38 years of service, member of Golden Lodge and St. Mary's Catholic Church.  An Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survived by his wife, Rita; one daughter, Krista A. Zwick of the home; five sons, David of Canton, Donald, Michael and Robert, all of the home, and Ronald of East Sparta; one grandson, Michael of Canton; three sisters, Kathleen Mays of Canton, Many Ring of Woodsfield and Mrs. Roger (Donna) Stanley of North Carolina; one brother, Francis of Harrisburg, OH.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Gerald Sommer, M.S.C.as Celebrant. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave.
