Salinas woman fatally stabbed
A Salinas woman died yesterday after being stabbed in her
home, and her estranged husband was arrested for the murder.
Salinas Police said a seven-year-old* girl called at 12:42
a.m. yesterday and reported that a man was stabbing her mother, Janet Krebbs,
in their home at 465 Montgomery St.
When officers arrived at the home they found Dwight Krebbs,
46, coming out of an upstairs bedroom, allegedly with blood on his hands and
arms. Janet Krebbs, 39, was in the
bedroom wounded. She was rushed to
Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, where she died at 5:05 a.m.
Police said Dwight Krebbs was estranged from his wife and
was not living in the home, and that he alledgedly gained entry by breaking in.
The girl and her 10-year-old* brother were taken into
protective custody by Monterey County Child Protective Services.
Dwight Krebbs was arrested and booked into Monterey County
Jail.
*Submitter's Notes: Later articles gave the girl as the older
child, age 10, and the boy as age 5.

Salinas slaying stuns neighbors
Girl reports fatal stabbing of
her mother
By Ricky de la Torre
Residents of the Rico-Rossi neighborhood on Sunday tried to
sort out the deadly violence that came to their block under cover of darkness.
Janet Krebbs, 39,
was stabbed to death by her estranged husband, police said.
The couple's two children were home at the time. The older child, a girl, was the one who
called 911 to say that her mother was being attacked by a man with a knife.
Police arrested the husband, Dwight Krebbs, 46, at the
home.
He was being held Sunday night without bail at Monterey
County Jail.
The slaying is the city's third this year.
"It's the sort of thing that can happen in any neighborhood
at any time, unfortunately," said Julie Boothe, 44, who lives across the
street.
Another neighbor, Denice Plymale, 37, said it was a
tragedy.
"It's just hard to believe. It's so sad. You feel so
terrible. You're so close. There's nothing you can do," Plymale
said.
Several neighbors said it was reassuring that there isn't a
killer on the loose. "It's
reassuring to hear that it's domestic violence, not random murder," one
neighbor said. "That would be
scary if someone was waiting in the home."
Several neighbors said they didn't have much contact with
the Krebbs family. The Krebbses didn't
often come out of the two-story shingle-roof home, which they moved into about
six months ago.
It wasn't known when the husband moved out of the house.
The children -- a girl, 10, and a boy, 5 -- didn't play
with other kids in the neighborhood, residents said.
Neighbors said they didn't hear any kind of commotion or
screaming at the time of the killing.
Police got the 911 call from the daughter at 12:42 a.m.
Sunday.
Police investigators gave this account:
The girl let officers into the home at 465 Montgomery
St. She told officers that her mother
and father were upstairs.
At the top of the stairs, police saw the husband coming out
of a bedroom.
He had blood on his hands and arms.
Without being told, the man put his hands behind his back.
The woman had been repeatedly stabbed in the chest with a
steak knife, but was able to talk with police.
She was taken to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, and died
about three hours later.
The boy had been asleep downstairs and slept through the
ordeal.
The children were placed under the care of the county's
child protective agency.

Repairing young
psyches
Children of
emotional scars, local
experts say
By Roys Camp
Society's youngest members often are unwitting observers of
the most unspeakable crimes as Salinas psychologist Mauro Amador can attest.
In his 20 years of specializing in child psychology, Amador
has seen patients as young as 3 who suffer with the burden of bearing witness
to in-home violence -- or are themselves the victims.
"It seems to be increasing, in frequency and in
severity," Amador said Tuesday.
"It tends to happen in cycles, often with the economy. People become impatient, and it's easy to
resort to aggression."
Ventura County resident, E. A. McKinley knows all about
domestic "aggression." He
said he learned about it in December, when his daughter, 39-year-old Janet Krebbs,
and her family visited for the holidays.
"It happened before," McKinley said in a
telephone interview. McKinley said that
during the visit, his 5-year-old grandson, Sean, "came up to me and said,
'Grandpa, Dad hit Mom.'"
Before dawn Sunday, Krebbs was fatally stabbed in her
Salinas home as her 10-year-old daughter, Harmony, watched. Police suspect her estranged husband,
46-year-old Dwight Krebbs.
The daughter called for police, who arrested Dwight Krebbs
as he emerged from an upstairs bedroom in the couple's Montgomery Street
home. Krebbs is being held at Monterey
County Jail, charged with murder and burglary.
The children now are with their grandfather and are expected to find a
permanent home with another McKinley daughter, as specified in Janet Krebbs'
will.
In another case . . . .
*Submitter’s Note: Above
are two other articles. Another article headlined “Murdered wife feared for safety” told of
the steps Janet had done to protect herself including changing all the locks and
getting a restraining order. It also
said that she worked at the Naval Postgraduate School and that her husband was
“a retired Army sergeant who quit his job as a security guard in December.”
