Clara Margaret Cox Alexander, 70, of 711 Hall St.,
Owensboro, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. She
was born in Owensboro, retired from GE and MPD and was a member of Breckenridge
United Methodist Church. Her daughter, Nancy Carol Ballard, died in 1963.
Survivors include her companion, Charles W.
"Wally" Boling of Owensboro; two sons, John D. Alexander of Owensboro
and George G. Alexander of Hendersonville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and three
sisters, Georgia Dantic, Evelyn Duncan and Doris Bennett, all of Owensboro.
Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home in
Owensboro. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 12:30 to 8
p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family requests
that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to American Cancer
Society, 2229 New Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303. Memorial contribution
envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Loving
father, grandfather and great-grandfather went to be with his Lord Sunday,
August 17, 1997, after a short illness.
Age 85 years. He was born
October 5, 1911 in Woodsfield, Ohio, the son of the late Samuel and Emma
(Starkey) Allen. He came to Michigan in
1945. He was employed as an electrician
at Grey Iron Foundry, retiring in 1975.
Surviving are four children and their spouses, Joanne and Frank Rifenbark,
Bad Axe; Dennis and Laura Allen, Ann Arbor; Betty and Leonard Cliff, . . .* Jackie Allen, all of Saginaw; 10
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Barrickman, Boca
Raton, Forida. A brother Oscar, has
predeceased him.
The
funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the W.L. Case &
Company Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Rd.
Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the chapel from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

died Sunday, May 11, 1997 at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus. He was born Sept. 5, 1933 in Wheeling, a son
of the late Paul Derrell and Alice M. Hickinbotham Archer.
He was a retired business office manager for the former
Picoma Industries and Wheeling Hospital and a member of the First Christian
Church of Martins Ferry.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Hill Archer; a son, P.
Donald Jr. of Washington, Pa.; three daughters, Mrs. Benjamin (Pamela) Orzolek
of Martins Ferry, Mrs. Kenneth (Kimberly) Boltz of Dublin and Mrs. Kirk (Karen)
Roth of Martins Ferry; a brother, Robert L. Archer of Martins Ferry; 10
grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be held at the First Christian Church,
Martins Ferry, Wednesday, at 11:30 a.m., with Minister Rod Kasler
officiating. Burial will be at the
convenience of the family at Belmont County Memorial Park Cemetery, St.

Bernice ''Bea'' M. Arlow, 72, of Lincolnton, N.C., and
formerly of Venice, died Dec. 15, 1997.
She was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Chester, W.Va., and moved to
Lincolnton two years ago from Venice, where she was a registered nurse at
Venice Hospital, now Bon Secours-Venice Hospital, for 20 years. A graduate of
the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing, she was a member of the
Quilting Guild and the Golden Agers of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lincolnton.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas of Lincolnton and Edward
H. of Willowick, Ohio; a brother, Harold Cronin of California; and four
grandchildren.
Services will be in Lincolnton. National Cremation Society,
Sarasota chapter, is in charge.

Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital.
She was born on June 4, 1917, in Wolf Pen, Tyler Co., W.
V., the daughter of the late Charles and Pearl Mercer.
Hilda was a retired employee of the former Marx Toy Factory.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Burl
Mercer; four sisters Lillian Wright, Opal Wetzel, Mary Goodrich, and Juanita
West.
She is survived by a son Mickey Bostic of Sunrise, Fl; a
daughter Margaret Ellis of Moundsville; two brothers, Dale and Charles Mercer
both of Moundsville; two sisters, Gail Roberts of Knob Fork, W. V. and Sada
Wayson of Proctor; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be
held Saturday, at 1 p.m. at Grisell Funeral Home, with Rev. John R. Miller
officiating.

WARREN--Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Roberts-Clark Memorial
Home for Mrs. Cecile A. Bailey, 84, of 199 Fuller Drive N.E., who died of
complications from cancer Friday afternoon in Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
Mrs.
Bailey was born Jan. 9, 1913, in Beaver, Pa., a daughter of Floyd E. and Bertha
D. Wines Goodballet, and moved to Warren in 1962 from Girard.
She
worked for Packard Electric for 22 years and retired in 1964. She was a member of the Animal Welfare
League of Trumbull County.
Besides
her husband, George E. of Howland, whom she married Aug. 25, 1962, she leaves a
son, Gregory S., and a daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Boyd, both of Howland; five
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A sister, Mrs. Irene Williamson, is deceased.
Friends
may call one hour before the service at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Animal
Welfare League of Trumbull County.

Eleanor J.
(Tally) Bailey, 64, Beatrice, died Saturday, Oct 15, 1994, at Beatrice
Community Hospital. She was born Dec.
5, 1929, at Firth. She worked as a cook
at Firth Norris High School for many years before retirement in 1985. She and her husband moved to Beatrice from
Firth in 1988. She bowled in the Senior
Citizens Bowling League in Beatrice and was a member of the Firth Community
Church at Firth.
Survivors:
sisters, Maxine Adair and husband Dan of Sulphur Springs, Texas, and Letha
Boerrigter and husband Richard of Wymore; cousin, Merle I. Hale of Wymore, who
lived with the Tally family from age 7 until adulthood. She was preceded in death by her parents,
Leo Raymond and Vida (Schell) Tally; and her husband, Emmett Bailey on April
12, 1993.

Thelma L. Curry Baker, 85, Port Charlotte, died Dec. 28,
1997.
She was born Aug. 18, 1912, in Danville, Ill., and came to
Port Charlotte four years ago from Clinton, Ind. She was a 50-year member of
the Morris Chapter of the Eastern Star in New Goshen, Ind., where she served
for 20 years as Worthy Matron and organist. She was a member of United
Methodist Church in Clinton and Gulf Cove United Methodist Church in Port
Charlotte.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Shelby of Port
Charlotte; two sons, Jerry and Jim Curry, both of Port Charlotte; two sisters,
Waneta Steenbergen of Oakwood, Ill., and Wilma Thomas of Danville; 10
grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 10, at Gulf Cove United
Methodist Church and inurnment will be later in Clinton. National Cremation
Society, Port Charlotte chapter, is in charge.

Raymond R. Baxter, 71, Indianapolis, father of two Shelby
residents, died Tuesday at Lakeview Manor in Indianapolis.
Mr. Baxter was the owner and operator of Greenfield
Builders & Erectors for 15 years.
He retired in 1983. He was a
U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II.
Survivors include three sons, Alan E. and Richard Baxter,
both of Shelbyville, and Phillip R. Baxter, Indianapolis; a daughter, Linda
(Baxter) Noel, Hawaii; a sister, Naomi Drake; nine grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Conkle

OROVILLE - A funeral for Gerald Leroy Bessey, 87, of
Oroville will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Scheer Memorial Chapel.
Bessey died Saturday, Feb. 22, 1997, at a local care
center.
Born Jan. 10, 1910, in Codell, Kan., he had been an
Oroville resident 33 years.
He was a member of SIRs 83 and Oroville Host Lions.
Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Garnet of Oroville;
stepson, Lloyd White; four brothers, Roscoe of Corcoran, Ronald of Porterville,
Corlis of Walnut Creek and Ray of Tulare; three sisters, Elaine Frodsham of

John Junior Betts, 72, of 2945 Berry Lane, Columbus, Ohio,
died suddenly at his home on March 5, 1997, formerly of Lewisville, Ohio.
He was the son of the late Frank and Rosa Crawford Betts. He
was born at his parents’ home on Lewisville, Ohio, Route 1 on January 11, 1925.
He attended school at Calais, Ohio, and graduated from Lewisville High School,
Lewisville, Ohio. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the V. F. W.
Millcreek Memorial Post 3320, Marysville, Ohio. He was a watchmaker and jeweler
for 45 years and a member of the Watchmaker Association.
He is survived by his wife, Donna G. Betts, of the home;
three sons, Juan and Terry (Sandy) Betts, Ft. Myers, Florida, Keith (Joan)
Rose, of Englewood; and daughter, Jody (Paul) Zeto, of Columbus, Ohio;
grandchildren, Trevor, Christopher, Steven, Santana, Aldena, Dustin and Tony;
three sisters, Mary Eva (LaVern) Christman, of Columbus, Lela (Raymond)
Christman and Louise Morris, of Barnesville, Ohio; three sisters-in-law, Zelda
Betts, of Lewisville, Joy Rose and Penny Loudermilk, of Columbus;
brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill )Patricia) Rose, of Columbus, and several
nieces, nephews,
and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
first wife, Martha Lou Mercer Betts; five brothers, Clarence, George, Woodrow
of the home, Vearl, who died during WWII in Foggia, Italy; one sister of the
home, Sara Betts.
Friends were received March 7 at the Schoedinger Funeral
Home North Chapel, Columbus, with Pastor Vernon Jones officiating. A beautiful
eulogy was written by his daughter Jody Zeto and was read by his son, Keith
Rose.

Brown County resident J. Eugene "Gene" Beuoy died Thursday, April 3,
1997, at his home in Indianapolis. He was 84.
Mr.
Beuoy was born April 25, 1912, in Fowlerton to Ray and Elsie Mann Beuoy.
He and
Louetta Voland were married September 14, 1935, in Brown County. She survives.
Mr.
Beuoy had worked as a service technician at Unisys Incorporated for 34 years.
Other
survivors include a daughter, Marilyn L. Vincent of Farmland; three sons,
Robert E. Beuoy and John A. Beuoy, both of Indianapolis, and Jay Beuoy of
Greenwood; a brother, L. Randolph Beuoy of Naples, Florida; a sister, Irma

He was
preceded in death by a brother; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.

7, at Forest Lawn Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home near Greenwood.

was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Edith M. Bilger, 92, formerly of Scott Street, Savannah,
died Wednesday morning at Good Shepherd Home following a lingering illness.
She was born in Woodsfield, Aug. 2, 1905, the daughter of
George and Tillie Brown Kysor.
She was a resident of Ashland County most of her life.
She was a homemaker, and had been a cook for Savannah
School and Isaly's Dairy in Ashland.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Savannah.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and
Barbara Bilger of Loudonville; Kenneth and Gretchen Bilger of Columbus, Miss.,
and Ron and Janet Bilger of Ashland; six grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1966
and a daughter, Gloria Hupp, in 1980.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Heyl Funeral Home
with the Rev. Kenneth Lindecamp and the Rev. John Bouquet officiating.
Burial will be Savannah Cemetery.

WOODSFIELD--Wayne L. Bishop, 74, of
Woodsfield, died Tuesday (May 6, 1997) at Barnesville Hospital.
He
was born Sept. 15, 1922, in Stafford, son of the late Earl and Elva Stallings
Bishop.
He was retired from the Ohio Department of
Transportation, Monroe County Division. Mr. Bishop was an Air Force veteran and
a Methodist by faith.
He
leaves his wife, Wadna* Moore Bishop, whom he married June 30 1945; three sons
and daughters-in-laws. Tim and Penny Bishop of Mantua, and Gary and Pam Bishop
and Steve and Kathy Bishop, all of Woodsfield; a daughter Connie Bishop of
Zanesville; two sisters, Mary of California and Shirley of Columbus; nine
grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 9 P.M. Friday at Watters Funeral Home,
Woodsfield, where services will be 1 P.M. Saturday with the Rev. Gary

Blythe, Arden Blythe

Arden Blythe, 65, retired superintendent of Delphos city
schools, died of cancer Monday in his home.
He had been ill seven months and was under hospice care,
said his wife, Nancy.
Mr. Blythe retired in 1986 after 17 years as superintendent
at Delphos. He later became a real estate broker, dealing in farm land and
residential properties, Mrs. Blythe said.
His career in education began in 1957 at Delphos, where he
taught vocational agriculture until 1961. He then was principal of Franklin
School for six years, becoming superintendent in 1967.
Born in Grover Hill, O.,
Mr. Blythe received his bachelor of science degree from Ohio State University and
his master's degree in school administration in 1961 from Bowling Green State
University.
He and his wife enjoyed travel, visiting Europe, Russia,
and other countries.
In retirement, the educator, a former coach of boys
basketball in the Delphos elementary schools, liked to follow Delphos High
School football and basketball games, Mrs. Blythe said.
He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Ky., during World
War II. He was a past president of Delta Theta Sigma fraternity, and a member
of the Delphos Rotary Club and Trinity United Methodist Church of Delphos.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 43 years, Nancy Blythe;
sons, Dr. Stephen Blythe and Lt. Col. Gregory Blythe; daughter, Laura Osburn,
and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Harter &
Son Memorial Chapel, Delphos, where the body will be after 2 p.m. today.
The family requests tributes to the Delphos Visiting Nurses
Association, St. Rita's Hospice, or Trinity United Methodist Church.

Ila Evelyn Brown, 93, of Parkersburg, died Dec. 31 at The
Arbors of Marietta. She was born Jan. 17, 1904, in Pleasants County to the late
Robert and Luwilda Dufford McFarland. She was a resident of St. Marys before
moving to Parkersburg in 1964. She is survived by three sons, Larry Brown of
Balston [sic–Ballston] Lake, NY, Dale Brown of Marietta, and Ellis Brown
of Proctorville, OH; one sister, Mary McFarland; one brother, Edward McFarland,
both of St. Marys; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two
great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C.
Brown, and five sisters.
Services were Saturday at the Ruttencutter Funeral Home in
St. Marys. Burial in the IOOF Cemetery in St. Marys.

Salem Community Hospital following a long illness.
He was
born Feb. 22, 1926, in Conrad, Mo., to the late David J. and Alice (McMillen) Brown. He was employed with Brownies Auto Wrecking
in Salem for 40 years until his retirement in 1978.
Mr.
Brown was a veteran of World War II, having served with an Army infantry. He was awarded three bronze stars.
He is
survived by his wife, Charlene Ruth (Goodballet) Brown, whom he married Aug.
30, 1947; three sons, Richard A. of Hawley, Pa., Merlin "Jake" Jr. of
Lisbon and Donald J. of Damascus; a daughter, Nancy Lippiatt of Salem; a
brother, Claude of Beloit; four sisters, Bernie Dinwiddie of Pinos Altos, N.M.,
Irene Curtis of Salem and Lillian Fox and Louise Whaley, both of Alliance; 12
children; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

family services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Stark Memorial Funeral Home
with Jim Willison officiating. Burial

Howard J. Chambers, 72, Shelbyville, died today at Major
Hospital.
Born on Oct. 18, 1924, in Shelby County, he was the son of
Howard and Jessie (Colby) Chambers. On
June 9, 1973, he married Mavern (Courtney) Chambers, and she survives.
Mr. Chambers retired in 1983. He had been a truck driver for Commercial Freight Co. for 27
years.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S.
Navy.
He was a member of Flat Rock Christian Church; Shelbyville
American Legion Post No. 70; Shelbyville Eagles Lodge; Norristown Masonic
Lodge; and Sahara Grotto, Indianapolis.
Survivors include his wife, Shelbyville; two sons, James R.
Chambers, Greenfield, and Ronald Chambers, Illinois; a daughter, Micki
Chambers, Waldron; two stepdaughters, Lou Ann Kremer and Judy Vaughn, both of
Shelbyville; a stepson, Eric McVey, Shelbyville; and 18 grandchildren; and

Patterson Medical Center, Fairborn. He was born September 4, 1928, at

He was a veteran of WW II, Korea and Vietnam. Retired from the
U. S. Army. He was a member of the Noncommissioned Officers Association,
Whitehall VFW Post 8794 and mended Hearts Chapter 95.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Eva Betts Christman, Columbus,
whom he married June 4, 1949; sister, Carolyn Gadd, Woodsfield; brother, Melvin
(Margaret) Christman, Holmesville; nephews, Marty (Robbin) Christman, Mitchell

James Charles Cody, the brother of Helmsburg resident
Marvin Cody, died Wednesday, September 17, 1997, at his home in Bartholomew
County. He was 79.
Mr. Cody was born February 11, 1918, in Marion County to
Pleasent Guinn and Edith Rose Bingham.
He and Elizabeth L. Shaw were married October 30,
1987. She survives.
Mr. Cody had worked in Cummins Engine Company in Columbus
for 38 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a former member of the Columbus Eagles Lodge and St.
John's Masonic Lodge.
Other survivors include five sons, Kerry Cody, Charles
Cody, Mike Cody and James S. Cody, all of Columbus, and Bill Cody of Houston
Texas; two daughters, Betty Whitis of Columbus and Rose Cody of Carson City,
Nevada; a step-son, Teddy V. Hubbard of Wabash; a step-daughter, Cynthia Smith
of Columbus; three other brothers, Bill Cody Sr. and George Cody, both of
Columbus, and Howard Gene Cody of New Mexico; a sister, Margie Withers of

Mr. Day was the last surviving member of
his family, having been preceded in death by three brothers, Kyle C., Bert W.,
and Carl M. Day; and his first and second wives, Ruth Horton Day and Verna
Dotson Day.

sister-in-law, Beulah Shackle Day of Mount Vernon; two nephews, Donald and Glen

TRINWAY -- Barbara A. Flood, 56, of 3170 Third St.,
Trinway, died t 11:40 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, at her home.
Born Sept. 24, 1941, in Zanesville, she was the daughter of
Mary (Warfield) Frank of Trinway and the late Rawlston Frank.
On Dec. 31, 1960, she married Ronald L. Flood. He
survives.
Mrs. Flood was a longtime employee of the Longaberger Co.
and recently worked in the tourism department.
She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Dresden.
Along with her mother and husband, she is survived by son
Kevin Flood and wife Marla of Dresden; three daughters, Angie Flood and Mindi
Flood, both of Trinway, Lori Lake and husband Randy of Frazeyburg; a brother,
Richard Frank and wife, Linda of Zanesville; six grandchildren, Melissa and
Lindsey Lake, Kylie, Jeremy, Joshua and Jacob Flood.
A funeral mass will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 1, 1997, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Dresden with Fr. Frank Mller as
celebrant. Burial will follow in
Memorial Park, Zanesville.

Vensil-Orr Funeral Home in Dresden.

Mr. Flood was a retired

faith. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having received a Purple Heart.
He was also a member of VFW Post 2792, Barnesville, life member of the American
Legion Post 578, Batesville, life member of Disabled American Veterans Post 28,
Cambridge, and the 95th Infantry Division Association Chapter 7, Ottawa.
He was preceded in death by a
brother William.

Starr, whom he married Feb. 14, 1975; a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Beverly) Smith of

Gwen Fox, 57,
Shelbyville, died Tuesday at Major Hospital.
Born Jan. 1, 1940, in Greensburg, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Genevieve (Pope) Moulton. Her father survives. She married
Dan Fox on Jan. 6, 1958, and he
survives.
Mrs. Fox was an auditor for the state of Indiana and a
hearing officer for the State Borad of Tax Commissioners. She was a former substitute teacher with
Shelbyville Central Schools and worked a s a tax consultant with H&R Block
Co. Mrs. Fox was a graduate of Indiana
University and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma honorary society. She was a member of First Baptist Church,
Shelbyville. She was a guardian ad
litem volunteer and board member of the Shelby County Youth Shelter, and a past
president of the Pearson Elementary Parent Teachers Organization. She had been a foster parent to several
children.
In addition to her husband, Shelbyville, and her father,
Naples, Fla., survivors include three sons,
Richard Fox, Troy Fox and
Daniel E. Fox, Jr., Shelbyville;
two daughters, Cynthia Fox, Shelbyville and Danni* Sue Redden,
Rushville; three half-brothers,

MANSFIELD -- Arley Marvin Fraley, 80, of 1979 Hulit Road, died
Tuesday morning, July 15, 1997, at Mansfield Memorial Homes after a brief
illness.
Mr. Fraley was born February 6, 1917, in Greenup County,
Kentucky, living in the Mansfield area most of his life. He retired from Perfection Steel Body,
Galion, Ohio. Mr. Fraley was a member
of the First Assembly of God.
Surving are his wife, Helen (Bauman) Fraley; two sons and
daughters-in-law, Ted and Brenda Fraley and Rick and Sandy Fraley, all of
Mansfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Richard Remy of Mansfield;

He was born near Lewisville, on Dec. 6, 1940, a son of Ethel Kenney Frank,

former construction worker and coal miner and had attended the Stafford Church
of Christ, Stafford.
In
addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Grethel Snyder Frank, whom
he married Dec. 6, 1958; four brothers, Forrest O. "Frosty" Frank,
Woodsfield; James E. Frank, of Woodsfield; Eugene A. Frank, of Newport; and
Oscar E. Frank, of Lewisville; one sister Rose Ann Agee, of Lilburn, Georgia;

Lewisville, Ohio died June 26, 1997, at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, West
Virginia. He was born in Dallas, Texas, November 28, 1916, a son of the late
Little Berry Vaux Fussell and Alamay Fussell.
He was a retired pope line construction welder; Union 798, a
member of the Stafford Masonic Lodge, Osiris Temple Wheeling, and a member of
the Switzerland of Ohio Country Club.
Surviving are his wife, Artie Robinson Fussell, of
Lewisville; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas Rheba Fussell, of New
Mexico, Daniel and Sue Fussell, of Lewisville, James Fussell, Jr., of
Chillicothe, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Jerry Patterson,

-- Samuel F. Gildersleeve, 72, of Route 307, died Friday at the Cleveland
Clinic.
Mr. Gildersleeve was born May 31, 1925, in Jefferson, the
son of Thomas H. and Maude E. (Lutz) Gildersleeve and had lived in Jefferson
all of his life.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
He married Carrol J. Brigham on March 3, 1951, in
Lewisville.
Mr. Gildersleeve worked at the True Temper Corp. for seven
years; Reliance Electric for 33 years, from which he retired in 1986. He operated Gildersleeve Dairy Farm for two
years before retiring in 1988.
He was a member of Eagleville Bible Church and Austinburg
Grange. He enjoyed hunting, fishing,
playing with his grandchildren and having picnics in the yard.
Survivors include his wife; five children, Franklin G. of
Austinburg Township, Delora "Lori" Rose of Jefferson, Timothy D. of
Austinburg Township, Samuel R. of Jefferson and Cynthia "Cindy"
Vivian of Columbus; a foreign exchange daughter, Ingrid Weber of Dallas, Texas;
11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild; a
brother, Kenneth of Chester Township; four sisters, Verna Nelson of Jefferson,
Georgia Gray of Niles, Martha Taber of Dearborn Heights, Mich., and June Wetzig
of Middletown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers,
John, Fred and Robert; and four sisters, Alice Gnau, Bonnie Gildersleeve, Patti
McDaniel and Isabelle Desimio.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc.,
a Family Care Group affiliate, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev.

He was born Feb. 11, 1911, in Sebring, Ohio, to Charles and
Sarah Prosser* Goodballet and died Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, at Integris Bass
Baptist Health Center.
He graduated from Sebring High School and attended
Cincinnati Bible Seiminary, Western Illinois University, Rockford College,
Northern Illinois University, the University of Missouri, Dallas Christian
College, Southwestern State University and Northwestern State University.
He preached for 61 years at Fredricktown, Ohio, New
Holland, Ohio, Plymouth, Ind., Medaryville, Ind., Oakland, Ill., Wapella, Ill.,
Fisher, Ill., New Bedford, Ill., Polo, Ill., Zafra, Okla., St. Louis, Mo.,
McKinney, Texas, Fort Cobb, Wichita,
Broxton, Camargo, Mooreland, Mangum and Hydro.
He was also a qualified school teacher and taught in many
schools. He was a member of the Odd
Fellows Lodge in Mangum and Woodward.
He is survived by four children, Charles Goodballet of
Glendale, Ariz., Mary O'Hair of Pond Creek, Joseph Goodballet, Richard
Goodballet, both of Woodward, one sister, Pearl Manypenny of Sebring, Ohio;
eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, one
son, one granddaughter and three wives.

Jesse Eldredge Gray, 57, of 412 East Marietta Street,
Woodsfield, died Sept. 5, 1997, at his home.
He was born Sept. 12, 1939 at Woodsfield, a son of Mildred Moose Gray,
who survives, of Woodsfield and the late Jesse A. Gray.
He was a former laborer and was a member of the Woodsfield
United Methodist Church, Woodsfield. He
was also a member of the Army Reserves.
In addition to his mother he is survived by one son, Kevin
Gray, of Woodsfield; one daughter, Teresa Sloan, of St. Clairsville; three
sisters, Mrs. Crawford (Martha Lea) Hines, of Graysville, Virginia Roehm and
Betty Sanders, both of Erie, PA; three grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one
brother Bernard William Gray.

-- Leroy B. Gutberlet, 52, of Waterford Route 1 died at 5 a.m. Wednesday (April
2, 1997) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was
born Oct. 14, 1944, in Archers Fork to Glen and June Haught Gutberlet. He was a graduate of Lawrence High School
and served in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam.
He was
shot while in the service and was in rehabilitation for almost a year learning
to walk again. He had been awarded the
Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, the Expert Rifleman badge and was awarded the
Dress Blues as the honor man of his platoon.
He
enjoyed hunting, golf and automobiles.
He owned L&G Motors in Marietta and later Marietta Motors Used Cars
of Marietta. He had been owner of
Morgan County Chrysler-Plymouth, Dodge, Jeep and Eagle and Leroy Gutberlet
Chevrolet, G.E.O. of McConnelsville for 11 years.
He was
instrumental in the founding of the Muskingum Valley Area Chamber of Commerce
where he was vice president and was a member of the Morgan County Chamber of
Commerce and the Morgan County Rotary Club.
He
served on the board of the Home Town Chevy Dealers Association and was a member
of Chrysler's Elite Club and Star Group.
He was also a member of the Ohio Automobile Dealers Association and
Morgan County Small Business Association.
He was a member of the Marietta Bible Center Church and had been on the
board of the Marietta Bible College and Marietta Christian School.
He was
a member of the American Union Lodge No. 1, Free and Accepted Masons; the Scottish
Rite Society, Valley of Cambridge; the Washington County Scottish Rite Club;
Marietta Shrine Club; American Legion Post 64; Washington County Post 5108,
Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Wild Turkey Federation; and the National Rifle
Association.
In 196?,* he married Carol Klies who
survives with two daughters, Mindy Wolfe and her husband, Brian, of Marietta
and Angie Schmidle and her husband, Joe, of Kingwood, W.Va.; two grandchildren,
Mitchel Wolfe and Cassidy Schmidle; his parents of Marietta; one brother, David
Gutberlet and his wife, Joyce, of Beverly.
Also
surviving are four nephews, Kyle Gutberlet of Beverly, Kevin
Gutberlet of Marietta, Kent Gutberlet of Newport and
Kirk Gutberlet of Dart, all affiliated with the car dealership; one
brother-in-law, Jerry Klies and his wife, Linda, of Malta; his mother-in-law,
Bessie Klies of McConnellsville; one niece, Tina Lucas of Steubenville; four
aunts, Naomi Moore, Edith Gutberlet and Eileen Greathouse, all of Marietta and
Betty Frazey of Junction City, Kan.; and his great-aunt Gertrude Gutberlet of
Marietta.
Services are at 1:30 Saturday at the Marietta Bible Center Church with
the Rev. Myron Guiler officiating.

Harvey, 84, lifetime resident of Brush, died this morning at Eben Ezer Lutheran
Care Center.
Mrs.
Harvey was born Nov. 18, 1912 in Brush to John and Elizabeth Oldemeyer. She
married Stan Harvey on Jan. 2, 1936 in Cheyenne Wells. She was a member of the
Rankin Presbyterian Church.
Survivors
include one son, John Harvey of Woodland Hills, Texas; one daughter, Maxine
Baker of Fort Morgan; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her husband, one brother and her parents.
Memorial
services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Rankin Presbyterian Church, 420
Clayton St. in Brush. Services will conclude at the church. The Herr Mortuary

of Woodbridge, Toledo, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, in Edgewood Nursing Home,
Toledo. Mrs. Heckman was born in
Greensprings, OH on August 5, 1918, to Frank and Myrtle (Sodan) Heckman. Virgil was an Army veteran of WWII and
worked as a truck driver for 37 years for the former A&P Tea Co. and
retired in 1976.
Surviving are his sons, Gerald R., Francis A., and Virgil
A. (Darlene) Heckman Jr.; daughter, Mrs. Sharon L. Whitehill; grandfather of
Amanda Langer, Kerry, Lance (Angi), Robert and Terry Heckman; great-grandfather
of Jamie, Samantha, Lance Michael and Samantha; brother, Francis Heckman.

City, died Thursday (Oct. 2, 1997) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
She
was born July 5, 1916, in Calais, daughter of the late Lewis and Martha Powell
Carpenter. Mrs. Henderson was employed
at the former Spratt's Grocery Store and Broughton's Lunch Counter. She
attended Fairview Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry
R. Crabtree in 1946; her second husband, Robert Henderson in May 1980. They
were married in March 1947. Also deceased are four brothers, Harold, Marvin,
Lester and Floyd Carpenter, a sister, Emma L. Bates.
She leaves a son and daughter-in-law, John and Judy
Crabtree of Lancaster, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Judy) McJessy of Buffalo
and Mrs. Ron (Patty Jo) Veselenak of Cambridge; a brother, Charles
"Mike" Carpenter of Quaker City; three sisters, Hazel Hannahs of

Neil Herlan, 55, of Newport Route 1 died at 5 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 28, 1997) at
his home.
He was
born Oct. 15, 1941, in Newport to Joe and Edith Eddy Herlan. He was a graduate of Newport High School and
a member of Newport Church of Christ.
He had been employed at the El DuPont Company for more than 30 years
until his retirement on June 30, 1997, because of ill health. He had operated Herlan's Body Shop in
Newport. He enjoyed hunting, fishing,
camping and had played and also sponsored teams in the Old Timers League.
He is
survived by his wife, Sandra Bleakley Herlan, whom he married Oct. 5, 1962; one
son, Joe Herlan of Newport; one daughter, Brenda Heiney and her husband, Dan,
of New Matamoras; three grandchildren, Cody and Levi Heiney and Ashley Herlan;
one brother, John Herlan and his wife, Sue, of Newport; one sister, Helen
Farson of Ravenna, Mich.; one niece Debbie Riggs of New Matamoras who was
reared in the Herlan home.
He was
preceded in death by an infant son, Brian Keith Herlan; his parents; two
brothers, Robert and Lowell Ray Herlan; and one sister, Donna Herlan.*
Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at Newport Church of Christ with Robert
Patterson officiating. Burial is in
Newport Cemetery. Friends may call at
McClure-Schafer Funeral Home from 2 p.m. today until Thursday morning and for

Hines, 92, of 32969 Hartshorn Ridge Road, Lewisville, died April 2, 1997, at
the Barnsville Hospital. He was born in
Monroe County May 21, 1904, a son of the late
(Nathaniel) Lee Hines and Carrie Morrison Hines.
He was a
retired farmer and oil field worker.
Surviving
are his wife, Gertrude Hartshorn Hines, of Lewisville; two sons and

Hissom, 99, of Springfield, Mo., and formerly of St. Marys, died April 8 in
Springfield. She was born in Noblestown, Pa., to the late Alexander and
Margaret Lambing Russell. She was a 1915 graduate of St. Marys High School and
possibly the oldest living alumnus. She was a member of American Post 79 Ladies
Auxiliary, St. Marys Chapter 31 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Grace
Episcopal Church in St. Marys. She is survived by one son, James O. Hissom of
Cincinnati; three granddaughters, Judy Billings and Janice Hendrix, both of Springfield,
and Jill Kendle of Fort worth, Texas; one sister, Audrey McCarrier of Wichita,
Kan.; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Olin S. Hissom, in 1968; five brothers; and five sisters. Services were
Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev William Reed Wood, Jr.
officiating. Burial was in St. Marys IOOF Cemetery. Memorial contributions may

Vocational School. She graduated from

Cresent-Sprague. At the time of her
death, she was employed by the Marietta State Nursery. She enjoyed bowling and playing pool.
She is survived by her parents, of Lowell; one son, Joseph
William Holiday of Whipple; two brothers, Leslie E. Holiday and his wife,
Carman Y., of Whipple, and Gregory Holiday and his wife Kelly S., of Marietta;
one sister, Robin Jones, and her husband Steven, of Massillon; her close
friends, Brian Powell of Whipple and Jackie Powell of Devola; and a number of
aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Cecil and
Emma Holiday and Joseph and Marie Rutter; one brother, Roger Holiday Jr., and a
brother and sister who were twins.

his home.
He retired in 1989 from Maxon Marine Industries, where he
was a night watchman for 34 years.
He was a seven year Army veteran and a member of Veterans

He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Mary Morris; two

"Bud" Hurley
Francis Bud Hurley,
72, Topeka, died Monday, April 1, 1997, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Hurley worked in the automotive business his entire
life. He taught auto body repair at Kaw
Area Vocational Technical School for 22 years.
He served in the 8th Armored Division in the Army during World War II.
He was born May 15, 1924, in Topeka, the son of Jesse
Samuel and LaVina Newell Hurley. He
attended Topeka schools and was graduated from Topeka High School.
Mr. Hurley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church,
the MOPAR Club, Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion and Philip Billard
Post No. 1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was also scoutmaster for Troop No. 44 for 12 years.
He was married to Blanche Sardou on Nov. 16, 1946, in
Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Daryl Hurley, Topeka, and
Kent Hurley, Joplin, Mo.; a daughter Marcia Carttar, Tucson, Ariz.; two
sisters, Kathleen Campbell, Norman, Okla. and Gloria Steinbeck, Topeka and six
grandchildren.

Food Market and was a volunteer with the Red Cross, having received the Golden
Key from the United Way. Preceded in

NOEL -- A. W. "Bill" Kerry, 89, Noel route 1,
died at 2:05 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997, at a Gravette, Ark., nursing home
after an illness.
Mr. Kerry was born Sept. 18, 1908, at Brookway, Pa. He had lived in the Noel area since
1945. He was a member of Noel United
Methodist Church. He retired from
Norris Grain Co., Noel, after 20 years.
He married Carroll Elaine Dixon Maddox on Sept. 13, 1941,
at Kansas City, Kan. She died Jan. 6,
1987.
Survivors include two sons, Linn Maddox, Eugene, Ore.,and
Kim Kerry, Worthington, Minn.; two daughters, Anne Lawrence, Raytown, and Jean
Phipps, Gravette, Ark.; a sister, Mabel Rugh, DuBois, Pa.; nine grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
Services were at 11 a.m. Monday at Noel United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Bob Howard officiating.
Burial was in Noel Cemetery.
Grandchildren served as pallbearers.
Visitation was from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ozark Funeral
Home, Noel, where the family received friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

Center, Woodsfield, died Monday, June 30, 1997, in Monroe County Care Center.
He was a retired construction worker, a member of the Woodsfield Church of
Christ and a veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by wife, Velma Baker
Kirkbride; an infant son; his parents, Alonzo and Clara McElroy Kirkbride; two
brothers; two sisters..
Surviving are a daughter, Patty Kirkbride of
Woodsfield; a brother, Wayne Kirkbride of Woodsfield; two sisters, Martha Yoss
of Monroe County Care Center and Vera Kanzigg of Ashland.
Friends were received Tuesday at Bauer-Turner Funeral
Home, Woodsfield, where services will be held today at 1 p.m. Interment in the
Jerusalem Cemetery, Jerusalem, Ohio.

Kirkbride, L. Grace, 84, 607 Cross Street, Summerfield,
died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997 at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta. She was
born Dec. 9, 1912 in Noble County, daughter of the late James and Minnie Curry
Warner. She had been a patient at Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell since
June 1997. She was a homemaker and a member of The Summerfield Church of
Christ, Summerfield. She was also a member of the Noble County Senior Citizens
in Caldwell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by her husband, Monzona Kirkbride on November 4, 1991; two brothers, Frank
Warner and Grant Warner and one step great-grand-daughter, Deanna Smithberger.
Surviving are three daughters, Ethel Weisend of
Newark, Lela Hill and her husband, Bernard and Donna Mallett and her husband,
Larry, all of Summerfield; one son, Donald Kirkbride and his wife Linda of
Whipple; three sisters, Dorothy Carpenter of Summerfield, Effie Warner,
Caldwell and Betty Moore, Barnesville; one brother, George Warner of
Summerfield; 16 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren,
several step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and one step
great-great-grandson.
Friends were received at Brubach-Watters Funeral Home,
Summerfield, on Friday where funeral services were held Saturday with
Evangelist Michael J. Davis officiating. Burial was in Eastern Cemetery,
Summerfield.

Kirkbride, Vernon M., 95, formerly of Quaker City,
died at Bell Nursing Home, Kimbolton on October 8, 1997. He was born in Lyon
County, Kansas on February 11, 1902, son of the late Ezra and Cora Pittman
Kirkbride. He was a farmer by occupation and member of Seneca Valley Church of
Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by his wife, Edna Morris Kirkbride; one brother, Isaac Kirkbride; a sister,
Bessie Kirkbride Mayberry; and an infant sister Rosic Kirkbride. Surviving are
a son; Roy Vernon Kirkbride of Quaker City; a brother, Ernest Kirkbride of Bell
Nursing Home, Kimbolton, several nieces and nephews.
Friends were received Thursday at Thorn-Eberle Funeral
Home, Quaker City, where services were Friday with Evangelist Herman Giesey
officiating. Burial was in Somerton Southern Cemetery.

Massillon Community Hospital.
Born May 20, 1941, in Martins Ferry, he was a son of the
late John and Betty (Wilson) Kondrach. He
was a Martins Ferry High graduate and served in the Army Air Force. He was employed at Manpower.
Surviving are his wife, Lynn (Eberhart) Kondrach of
Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Kim Burnette of California; a son, John Andrew
Kondrach of Massillon; a stepdaughter, Kerry Pittman of Virginia Beach; six
sisters, Sally Bunker of Norfolk, Va, Marilyn Grelles of Elizabeth City, N.C.,
Debbie Curnes of Martins Ferry, Belinda Muhar of Wyoming, Barbie Briggs and
Susie Canaday; three brothers, Mickey Kondrach, Gilbert Kondrach of Virginia
Beach and Dicky Speidel of Wyoming; and five grandchildren.
The funeral is at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Paquelet Funeral Home
in Massillon with Rev. W. Jay Dolvin officiating. Burial is in Massillon Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

SANDUSKY -- Paul R. Kurtzman, 84, Sandusky, formerly of
Columbus, died Saturday, July 26, 1997, in Providence Hospital.
He was born Feb. 17, 1913, in Columbus, where he lived for
34 years. He lived in Sandusky for 25
years. He was the retired owner of
Kurtzman Motors, Worthington.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille, whom he married Nov.
26, 1938; two sons, Steven, North Carolina, and Phillip, Sheffield Lake.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren and Elroy
Kurtzman; two sisters, Grace Townsend and Elsie Stratton; and two
granddaughters in infancy.

Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was
a homemaker, former employee of Carl Hertel Sporting Goods and Picklers
Greenhouse, both in Columbus, and an office employee at Hamilton-Cosco from
1956 through 1960. Also, she was a 1927
graduate of Nashville High School and attended Indiana Business College in
Indianapolis. She was a member of First
Lutheran Church and a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star.
Funeral
will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Myers Funeral Service, Reed and Jewell
Chapel on 25th Street,with the Rev. D. James Kuchera officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and
from 1 p.m. until time of service Tuesday.
Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Boesche in 1938. He died in 1956. She married Dennis G. Lain Feb 27, 1960, at
First Lutheran Church in Columbus. He
survives.

surviving are a sister, Doris Crouch of Columbus; a step-son, Wilbur Boesche of
Columbus; and two nephews.
She was
preceded in death by a brother, Jim Voland, and a sister, Grace Wright.

-- Patricia E. Lamp, 56, of Newport died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday (May 25, 1997) at
her home following a bout with cancer.
She was
born Sept. 8, 1940, in Schley, Washington County to Clarence and Carrie V.
Herlan Binegar. She graduated from
Newport High School in 1958. She was
baptized Oct. 26, 1958 at Newport Church of Christ with Evangelist Robert
Patterson officiating. She was a
charter member of the Newport Emergency Squad and was active from 1976 to
1986. She had been employed for several
years at the Split Rail Restaurant in St. Marys, W.Va., and at Oopsa Daisy
Florist in Newport.
She is
survived by her mother of Pine Ridge; her husband James E. Lamp; four sons,
James Stephen Lamp and his wife, Barb, David Aaron Lamp and his wife, Tonda,
Michael Anthony Lamp and his friend, Cristy Lockhart, and Clayton Troy Lamp and
his wife, Crystal, all of Newport, one daughter, Sharon Michelle Henegar and
her husband, Craig, of Belmont, W. Va.; six grandchildren, Jessica, James and
Julia Henegar, all of Belmont and Brennan, Justin and Dustin Lamp all of
Newport; three brothers, Merle Binegar of Antioch, Orvil Binegar of Eureka

She was
preceded in death by her father; two brothers, Kenneth Binegar and Furl

85 of Springfield, beloved
mother and grandmother, went to be with the Lord at 6:18 p.m. Saturday,
December 20, 1997 in Mercy Medical Center. She left this life with all the love
of the family surrounding her. She was born in Mechancisburg, Ohio October 20,
1912, daughter of Henry and Nora (Leavitte) Sceva. She was employed as a
pediatric licensed practical nurse for Mercy Medical Center for 23 yeas,
retiring in 1979. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she presided
over child care for the Adult Religion Classes.
Her survivors include two daughters, Jeannie Price of
Metarie [sic—Metairie], Louisianna [sic—Louisiana] and Judith
Raines of Springfield; 16 grandchildren; numerous great and
great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Hayden of Mutual, Ohio; and a dear
friend, Marie Stewart of Urbana, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. in 1981;
a daughter, Joanne McAfee in 1996; two granddaughters, Cynthia Dunn and Diane
Sanborn; and a brother Paul Sceva in 1957.

Mr. Cecil A. Lewis Jr., 44, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at
his home.
He was born Nov. 4, 1953 in Salina, Kan., the son of Cecil
A. Sr. and Sarah J. Talbott Lewis. He
was a 1971 graduate of Arlington High School.
After graduating he attended Baylor University in Waco, Tarrant County
Community College and UTA in Arlington.
On Sept. 25, 1978 he was married to Carolyn S. Hall, of White
Settlement. After their marriage they
lived in Arlington, later moving to Fort Worth. In 1980 he entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Great
Lakes, Ill. He retired on Aug. 19,
1997, at Bangor, Wash. as an E-6. He
had served during Desert Storm and was an Electrical Technician Crypto Tech AW
and PC Repairman.
He is survived by his wife, of Ennis; two daughters, Amber
Lewis and Laura Lewis, both of Ennis, his parents, Cecil and Sarah Lewis Sr.,
of Ennis; a brother, Michael Lewis, of Dallas; a sister, Violet Lynch, of
Ennis; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the
Keever Chapel with Rev. Gary Webster officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from
6:30 - 8:30 today.

Mr. Bradley Scott Lucas, 35, passed away
in his residence on Thursday, December 25, 1997. Brad was born on April 14, 1962 in LaPorte, Indiana. He was the son of Dr. Bert and Nanci Lucas
of Toledo, OH.
Besides his parents, Brad leaves his
sister, Traci Lucas-Lopez of Wake Forest, NC and 3 nephews and a niece from
Wake Forest. Brad also leaves his
maternal grandmother, Frances Hindman of Santa Rosa, CA; maternal grandfather,
William Hindman, Sr. of Los Angeles, CA; and a paternal grandmother, Norma
Lucas-Payne of Chicago Heights, IL.
Brad was a graduate of St. Johns High
School having attended schools in Maumee and Toledo as well as a year in
France. From the age of 8 Brad played
hockey as a defenseman for the Great [sic--Greater] Toledo Amateur Hockey Association
(GTAHA) on teams which won local and national championships. His hockey career ended at St. John's High
School where he also played on a Championship team.
In his senior year at BGSU Brad became
a quadriplegic and for the last 13 years has been a resident of Michael Maas
Independent Living Center, 3250 Schneider Road, Toledo.
Brad asked that people celebrate his
life which is what is planned in a Memorial Service for Monday, December 29 at
11 a.m. at Providence Lutheran Church, Albon Road and Airport Highway.
Those planning an expression of

environment, (causes Brad cared about), or to a charity of the donor's choice.

She was born Aug. 13, 1927, in Marietta to the late Herbert
and Anna Leasure Smithberger.
She was a 1945 graduate of Marietta High School and was a
retired telephone operator and supervisor for Ohio Bell Telephone Co. in
Marietta and Columbus from1949 to 1970.
She was a member of Stafford United Methodist Church in
Stafford, Ohio Bell Telephone Pioneers CWA Local 4310, Franklin Homemakers Club, AARP, and National Council of
Senior Citizens in Washington, D.C.
She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Snider of
Waterford and Shirley Morey of Williamstown; two brothers, Bernard Smithberger
of Marietta and Ronald Smithberger of Newport; and several nieces, nephews,
great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert M.
"Jake" Mallett, on Dec. 24, 1994; and one brother, Robert
Smithberger.

the Daughters of the America Revolution.
She is
survived by two daughters, Ann Burkey and June Vulcan, both of North Benton; a
son, Charles J. Manypenny of Alliance; 15 grandchildren; 28 great
grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Manypenny was preceded in death by her husband, Harold T. Manypenny, on Dec. 6, 1990; a daughter, Mary Gooding in
1987; a sister, Violet Talbot; and three brothers, Donald, Jim and George.

the late Richard Marshall and Elvina Mercer Wilson.
Ms. Marsh was a retired employee of the former Gee
Electric, Wheeling, W. Va.
She was preceded in death by a son Robert R. Marsh; 10
brothers and sisters.
She leaves two sons, Raymond H. Marsh of Louisville, Ky.,
and Clarence H. Marsh of Moundsville; several grandchildren, including Cindy
Marsh Parkinson of Caldwell; several great-grandchildren.

Mrs.
Mathis was born November 9, 1934, in Robinson, Illinois to Ernest E. and Mary
Beth Hughes Pulley.
She and
Harold Mathis were married in 1975. He
survives.
Mrs.
Mathis had worked as a secretary in a law firm.
During
the late 1960s, she had been secretary at Sprunica Elementary School in Hamblen
Township.
Later,
Mrs. Mathis worked at the school corporation's headquarters as a secretary.
She was
a member of North Salem United Methodist Church.
Other
survivors include a son, Mark Wayne Settles of Columbus; two daughters, Sheri
Jo Settles and Marie Ellen Smith, both of Indianapolis; two sisters, Jane
Elliott of Robinson, Illinois and Linda Thill of Clifton, Virginia; a grandson,
Eric Michael Smith of Indianapolis, and an aunt, Crystal Warner of Kalamazoo,
Michigan.

Margaret Elaine McKinley, age 70 of Newbury Park, died
Tuesday at a Woodland Hills Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Mckinley was born July 7, 1927 in Topeka, Kansas, and
had been a Ventura County resident for the past 35 years. Her family was the
focus of her life. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter Jeanne Barfield of Chino,
Calif.; sons Ken McKinley of Grandville, Ohio, Wayne McKinley and Lloyd
McKinley of Newbury Park, and Gary McKinley of Camarillo; sisters Barbara
Picolet and Ann Tibbs of Tecumseh, Kansas; grandchildren Nigel, Michael,
Angela, Harmony, Jennifer, Sean, David, and Dylan.
She was preceded in death by her husband E. A. McKinley and
daughters Janet and Sharon.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9,
1997 at The Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, Camarillo.

Floyd William McMichael, 73, Shelbyville, died Monday at
Major Hospital.
Born Nov. 15, 1923, in Rush County, he was the son of Ora
N. and Frances I. (Noble) McMichael. On
Sept. 29, 1945, he married Mary (McGrew) McMichael, and she survives.
Mr. McMichael lived in Shelby and Rush counties for most of
his life.
He worked for 28 years as an ice cream salesman for
Borden's Ice Cream Co., retiring in 1976.
He served as the superintendent of Shelby Manor from1982 to 1987.
A 1941 graduate of Manilla High School, Mr. McMichael
served as a paratrooper during World War II with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne
Division.
He was a member of West Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Larry McMichael, Fort Wayne; a
daughter, Becky Misner, Tempe, Ariz.; two brothers, Howard McMichael, Shelbyville,
and Lowell McMichael, Rushville; a sister, Bernice Kemple, Rushville; and four
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at
Carmony-Ewing Broadway Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at West Street
United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Steve and Linda Brackney

MEADE Jean, age 65, longtime resident of Yukon, died
Wednesday, October 8, 1997, at Mercy Hospital. She was born to Ed and Josephine
Estep July 7, 1932 in Geary, Oklahoma. She married Bill Meade October 19, 1948
in Kingfisher. The couple were just shy of 49 years of marriage. They moved to
the Yukon area December 13, 1950 and established themselves as farmers for over
47 years. Jean was on the County Election Board for many years.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Ed
& Josephine, one sister Barbara and one brother Delbert. A loving wife,
mother, and grandmother, she is survived by her husband Bill of 48 years; one
son Mark Meade of OKC; two daughters Mary Ann Bomhoff and husband Tom of Yukon,
Barbara Gonzalez and husband Rudy of Dallas, Texas; one brother Elbert Estep
and wife Betty of Plains, Texas; one sister Elsie Foster and husband Charlie of
Yukon; a close family friend Duane Nance of OKC; grandchildren Denise Ryburn
and husband Jim, Lisa Simpson and husband Craig, Melissa Bomhoff and Jeff
Henry, Teresa Bomhoff and Eric Shrader and his son David, Jason Tiemann,

Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at home following a lengthy illness.
He was born here July
25, 1922, a son of the late Gladys Wooley and John F. Morris Sr.
A lifelong resident here, he was employed 41 years as a
crane operator at the former Crucible Steel Co. He was a corporal with he 23rd Infantry of the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II.
He was the recipient of a Purple Heart and was a Prisoner of War eight
months in Germany before his liberation by the Russian Army. He also was awarded the Victory Medal, the
Good Conduct Medal, the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and
the Combat Infantry Badge.
He was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church and was
a life member of American Legion Post 374, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 66,
where he was a member of the championship drill team; Disabled American
Veterans John Covert Chapter 47, where he was past commander, treasurer and
administrator of insurance; and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge
258. He also served as a Cub
Scoutmaster.
His first wife, Patricia Morris, whom he married June 18,
1947, died Jan. 28, 1978. He also was
preceded in death by a stepson, John A. Ward; and a brother, Robert Morris.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Johnson Morris, whom
he married Feb. 9, 1981; a son, James John Morris of Robinson, Ill.; two
stepdaughters, Mrs. Larry (Vicky) Diddle of East Liverpool and Sherry Gross of
Lantana, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Edward (Betty) Reight and Donna Todd of East Liverpool
and Mrs. Herbert (Ruth) Hood of Wellsville; a brother, Glenn Morris of East
Liverpool; three grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren and a
stepgreat-grandchild.
The Rev. John MulQueen will be celebrant of a Mass of
Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord military honors
graveside at Columbiana County Memorial Park.

7 to 9 Thursday, where an Elks service will be held at 7 and a DAV service will
be held at 7:30 p.m.

Jacquelin B. (Sherman) Naze, age 60, wife of Ralph Naze, of 4318 S. 15th
St., died Monday, Nov. 3, 1997.
She was
born Dec. 10, 1936, in Sigourney, Iowa to the late James and Margaret
Hollingsworth Newman. She attended
Kinross Elementary and High School in Kinross, Iowa. She later graduated from Lakeland College in 1974.
Jacquelin retired from the Dept. of Health and Social Services on July
1, 1997, after having been employed there since July 1, 1974, working directly
with children and families for the first 8 years. She was a Social Work Supervisor for 17 years and took great
pride in her work, always advocating for families.
In
addition to her work, Jacquelin served her community in many ways. She was an Administrator of the Fresh Start
halfway house for 2 years and board member of the St. Jude's Child Care Center
as well as a member of the Sheboygan Early Childhood Council. Jacquelin was instrumental in Sheboygan
County receiving a NACO achievement award for the Development of parenting labs
in the Sheboygan Area School District in 1991.
Also in 1991, Jacquelin was a member of the Health & Human Services
Child & Family work group and also worked closely with the Children Service
Society in implementing the Intensive In Home & Parent Aide programs. She was a member of the WI. Social Services
Association and served as Sheboygan County liaison. She was a member of WI Family Based Services Association and in
1993, served as chairperson of the adhoc committee on job descriptions. For many years Jacquelin was liaison for the
Salvation Army Christmas Service Committee, Big Brothers & Big Sisters and
the TAPP Program.
She is
survived by her husband Ralph, whom she married June 27, 1988. She is also survived by her seven children,
Gary (Sandra) Van Auken, Sheboygan, Peggy (Reid) Hanzalik, Crestwood, Ky., and
David (Deborah) Van Auten, Kingsford, Mich., by marriage to Stanley Van
Auken. Also, by Sherri (Terry)
Rusch-Regenwether, Sheboygan, Traci Hermann, Sheboygan, Kelly (Dr. Richard)
Olson, DeForest, Wis., and Richard J. Sherman, Sheboygan, by marriage to
Richard E. Sherman, and 17 grandchildren.
In

Jacquelin was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pine Hills Country
Club, Riverdale Ladies "9 Hole" Club, and the Christian Women's
League.

POCATELLO -- Arvilla Helen Neuhardt, 82, passed away at her
home Sept. 2, 1997.
She was born October 13, 1914, at March Center as the sixth
of thirteen children of Rebecca Wheelwright Howe and Fredrick James Howe. She
attended the local schools and graduated.
She married Adelbert Van Leuven June 1, 1934. They resided in [Downey?]* and then
moved to Pocatello. They later
divorced. She then married Wilmer
Neuhardt in 1957. They were married
until his death in 1985.
Arvilla enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards,
cooking and taking care of her family.
She worked as a receiving clerk for Montgomery Wards in Pocatello upon
retiring in 1974. She was an active
member of the Women of the Moose Lodge for many years. She served as a Past Senior [Regent?]*
and was involved with many of the activities and dinners held at the
lodge. She enjoyed going to Jackpot
Nevada by bus with friends [ _ ?__ ]* Sage and Jean Mann.
Arvilla has many friends with whom she enjoyed playing
cards with. She enjoyed the
companionship of [S?_ ]*Aldous,
a lifelong friend from school. They
would drive to Lava and soak in the hot pools or go out somewhere for dinner.
Prior to her illness, she was very active and was usually
gone on a short trip somewhere or just enjoying life.
Arvilla was preceded in death by her husband Bill; one
daughter, Elaine; one son, Eddy; eight brothers and one sister. She is survived by five sons: Gary Van Leuven, Salt Lake City; Karl
(Waynette) Van Leuven, Salt Lake City; Dirk (Helen) Van Leuven, Pocatello; Fred
(Laurel) Van Leuven, Pocatello; Mike (Colleen) Van Leuven, Pocatello. She is also survived by one daughter, Joan
Van Leuven of Missoula; one stepson, [Roc?]* Neuhardt, Portland; and one
stepdaughter, Charlene (Robert) Frisk, Pocatello. Arvilla is also survived by a brother Lloyd (Gerie) Howe. Boise; two sisters: Wyoma (Donald) Grandjean, Twin Falls;
Rebecca (Dale) Barrett, Banning, California; one sister-in-law, Margaret Howe,
Yuma, Arizona; 22 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Home in Pocatello, Friday Sept. 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and prior to the
funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday Sept. 6, 1997. Burial will be at the Arimo City Cemetery, Arimo, Idaho.

Jean (Massey) Neuhardt, 62, of Sioux city died of lung
cancer Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at her residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lief Erickson Park
Free Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donald Sturges officiating. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge
of the arrangements.
Mrs. Neuhardt was born May 28, 1934. She graduated from high school in Baltimore,
Md., and received her B.S. degree from East Carolina University in 1983.
She moved to Sioux City in 1987 from North Carolina. She was employed as a business instructor at
Western Tech Community College from 1990 to 1992. She was currently employed in the accounting department with the
city of Sioux City.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Jon and Melissa of
Sioux City; a daughter, Linda Mountain of California; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Mrs. Palmer was born Aug. 6, 1920,

She retired from Mercer County
Living Center, Coolspring Township; and the State Regional Correction Facility
at Mercer.
She was a member and deacon of
Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer, and belonged to its Day Timers
organization.
Mrs. Palmer was a member of Brandy
Springers, Mercer; and the Organ Club, a music club of Valley Organ, hermitage.
She was a winner of several awards
for her oil paintings and was renouned for her organ and piano playing
throughout the valley.

born May 31, 1907, in Woodsfield to William C. and Minnie Buchanan Polen. She was a homemaker and a member of St.
Paul's United Church of Christ in Woodsfield.
In her earlier years, she attended the Buchanan Presbyterian Church and
Starr School, both near Lewisville. She
was a member of Monroe County Senior Citizens and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
5303 Ladies Auxiliary, both in Woodsfield.
She is
survived by three sons, William A. Paulus of Woodsfield, Chester E. Paulus of
Zanesville and David V. Paulus of Roseville; seven grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
She was

Paulus, 85, of Massillon, died Jan. 18, 1997 in Massillon Community Hospital
after a five month illness.
He was
born March 1, 1911 in Woodsfield, the son of the late John A. and Catherine
(Latta) Paulus and had lived in Massillon since 1942.
He
graduated from Ohio University, Athens, and was a teacher in Monroe County
schools. He also taught in Stark Co.
schools before joining Nationwide Insurance Co., retiring from there in 1976.
He was
a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and served on board of trustees,
finance and parsonage committees. He
also taught the Loyal Builders Sunday School class for 25 years and was a
member of Clinton Lodge 47 F and AM.
He is
survived by his wife Anna Lucille Hall Paulus, of 59 years; a daughter, Mrs.
John (Ann Louise) Stormer, of Langhorne, Pa.; four sons, Emerson, James and
Keith Paulus, of Massillon and John F. Paulus, of Venice, Fla.; a sister, Mrs.
Clarence (Edna) Neisz, of Massillon; seven grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and two
sisters.
The
funeral was at Paquelet Funeral Home on Jan. 21. Burial was in Brookfield Cemetery.

Sondra J. Pickens, 55, of Hancock County Road 216, an employee
of the Van Buren school system, died of cancer Tuesday in her home.
She had been ill for the last six weeks, her daughter, Gina
Pickens, said.
A homemaker, Mrs. Pickens took care of her husband, John O.
Pickens, disabled nearly 10 years with a heart condition, and, until she too
became ill, worked a number of years part-time in the Van Buren school system
cafeteria.
''She was a very caring person, and did everything for
everyone,'' her daughter said.
A lifelong Findlay resident, she attended Findlay High
School.
She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church;
Rawson Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and the Eagles Lodge auxiliary.
Mrs. Pickens enjoyed playing the piano, her daughter said.
Surviving are her husband, John O. Pickens; son, John A.
Pickens; daughter, Gina Pickens; mother, Jennie Abell; brother, Dennis Abell;
sister, Shirley Staples, and one grandson.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the Coldren-Crates
Funeral Home, Findlay.

Katherine Louise McCollum Pitts, 84, of St. Marys, daughter
of the late Dr. J. Riley and Mabel McComas McCollum, died March 16 at The
Arbors of Marietta following a brief illness.
She was born Lilly Mae Prunty on Feb. 11, 1913, at New
Milton, Doddridge County to the late James Taylor and Ivy Myrtle Lattea Prunty.
She was a member of both Grace Episcopal and First Baptist
churches of St. Marys. She had taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church and
had been an English teacher at St. Marys High School. She was a graduate of
SMHS, attended Fairfax Hall in Waynesboro, Va., graduated from West Virginia
University and did post-graduate work at Salem
College.
She is survived by one daughter, Janis Dianne Williamson of
Williamstown; two sons, David R. Pitts of Baton Rouge, La., and Dan S. Pitts of
St. Marys; seven grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; and four
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, Chester O. Pitts, in 1968; one granddaughter, Joyce Williamson
McBride, and one brother, James Prunty.
Services were Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church with the
Revs. Hayward Perkey and Elliott Stabler officiating. Burial was in St. Marys

YAKIMA -- Laura Ellen Elizabeth Potter, 80, went to be with
her Lord and Savior on Friday, April 25, 1997.
Laura was born on March 10, 1916, in Drumright, Oklahoma,
to Luther Clearence [sic--Clarence] and Mary Myrtle (Shackleford)
Cook. She was raised and educated in
Oklahoma. She met Bernie Mahan in
Oklahoma and married him there on June 12, 1944; they had two sons, Luther and
Robert, both now deceased. She moved to
California during WW II where she worked for the shipyards. After the war Laura moved to Yakima where
she suffered polio, which would limit her movement the rest of her life. She met John Potter and they were married on
October 23, 1964; John preceded her in death in 1970.
Laura enjoyed sewing, cooking, was very strong in the Solid
Rock Pentecostal Church and in Jesus Christ.
She is
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sons, Robert Joe Mahan,
Luther David Mahan, and Joseph Haywood Cook.
She is survived by a brother, Claudy Cook of Selah; and five
grandchildren, Susan, Carolyn, Uve, Larena, and Joseph Ray.
Graveside services will be held at Tahoma Cemetery on Monday, April 28,
at 2:30 P.M.; those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery.

He was born April 24, 1915, in Steubenville, Ohio, and came
to Bradenton nine years ago from there. He was an Army veteran of World War II,
and a former bailiff for Steubenville's Municipal Court system. He was a
Methodist and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, the American Legion and
the Elks.
Survivors include a friend, Evelyn Sullivan of Bradenton; a
sister, Ruth Woods of Wintersville, Ohio; a niece; and a nephew.

since 1921, and was a 75 year member of the First Christian Church of Kent.

died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville. He
was born in Daviess County and was a member of Peoples Baptist Church. He
retired from Alcoa Aluminum and served in the Army Reserves.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Padgett Quiggins; three
sons, John W. Quiggins and David A. Quiggins, both of Owensboro, and John
Michael Quiggins of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Cindy Q. McComas of Owensboro;
four grandchildren; and a brother, Ernest M. Quiggins of Orlando.

Oskaloosa Elementary School, moved to Howard County and finished her schooling
at the Oakdale Township School near LeRoy.
She was united in marriage to Richard Jones in 1930, and
later married Clarence Ring in 1947 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in
Riceville.
Edith belonged to the St. Peter's Lutheran Ladies Aid. She
enjoyed sewing and was also an avid card player.
Survivors include her
husband; her children: Beverly Valencic of Waukegan, IL; Richard Jones of Lodi,
WI; Thomas Jones of Guam, U.S.A.; William Ring of Manly, IA; and Linda Kinneman
of Riceville; a son-in-law, Edward Pichelman; 17 grandchildren; 16

Dr. David Willard Rodgin, 68, of Modesto died Wednesday at
English Oaks Convalescent Hospital. Mr. Rodgin was a native of Washington, D.C.
He had lived in Modesto since 1968. He was a psychiatrist and medical doctor.
He served in the Air Force from 1954 to 1977; he was discharged as a colonel.
He was a flight surgeon and a commanding officer working at Castle Air Force
Base and Moron Air Force Base in Spain. He also worked at the state prison at
Vacaville and the Stanislaus County Department of Mental Health.
He is survived by his wife, Fern R. Rodgin of Modesto;
children, Lisa Rodgin Colson of Sunnyvale and Daniel Rodgin of Las Vegas; and a
stepson, Terry Berg of Modesto.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. July 5 at
Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel. Entombment will be at Acacia Memorial Mausoleum.

Donetta Shepard, 60, of Waco, Texas, formerly of
Lewisville, died Feb.18, 1997 at a local hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1936 in Marietta, the daughter of Irene
Young and the late Ward Young. She
married Samuel Shepard, Aug. 15, 1960. She taught chemistry and physics at
Reicher Catholic School for the last eight years. She also coached the academic
challenge team and was chairperson of the science department at Reicher.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived
by three daughters, Connie Gause, Melissa Pratt, and Samantha Shepard; one son,
Tom Shepard; sisters Iris Hartshorn, Carol Dougherty and Virginia Caivano;

Sunrise Church will hold memorial services at 7 p.m. Tuesday for Wilbert
Sheppard, 74, of Rialto who died Wednesday when he fell from a 24-foot ladder
in the church that he built, Youth Pastor Richard Gow said. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office
has determined Sheppard died from injuries that he sustained from the fall.
Three children found Sheppard’s body on the floor of the church, which is also
used as a gymnasium. Sheppard, a member
since 1960 of Sunrise Church, 2759 N. Ayala Drive, worked as an independent
contractor building many churches in the Inland Valley. After he finished
building Sunrise, Sheppard continued performing maintenance work at the
church. Sheppard also taught an adult
Bible study class, attended a regular Tuesday morning men’s meeting called
Promise Keepers, and played trumpet for five years in the Riverside Community Band,
Gow said. The Riverside Community Band
will perform at the memorial service and a video tribute honoring Sheppard’s
life will be shown.
Sheppard
is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a son, Pat; a daughter, Kitty Williams; a
daughter-in-law, Debra; a son-in-law, Gary Williams; a brother, Keith Sheppard;
five sisters, Nancy George, Betty Tiller, Ruth Avis, Marion Meads and Patricia
Reger; and four grandchildren. For

Dorothy A. Shinabery, 70, 213 Glenwood Ave., died today at
her residence.
She was born March 7, 1927, in Delta, the daughter of
George and Vera (Feeney) Culler. In
1946, she married Richard Shinabery, who died in 1981. She worked at Twins Rivers Nursing Home and
Glenwood Nursing Home as a nurses' aid.
She was a member of VFW Auxiliary 3360, Cornerstone Church of God and
its Ladies Missionary. She was a former
member of the Child Conservation League.
Surviving are three sons, Ronald, Terry and Lawrence, all
of Defiance; a brother, Gerald Culler, Defiance; four sisters, Mrs. Don
(Pauline) Crumly of Continental, Mrs. Jack (Zora) Adams of Defiance, Mrs. Vern
(Shirley) McDougle, Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Jerry (Marilyn) Smith, New Bavaria;
and eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Cornerstone Church of
God, with Rev. Jeffrey Eckman officiating.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 p.m. Thursday at
Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home.

Walter "Walt" E. Siefert, 71, Shelby County, died
Tuesday in an accident in a home-build airplane.
Born on Nov. 2, 1925, in Shelby County, he was the son of
Walter E. Sr. and Mattie (Imlay) Siefert.
On July 2, 1948, he married Patricia (Cherry) Siefert, and she survives.
Mr. Siefert was the owner of Siefert Construction Co. in
Shelby County for 40 years. He was a
U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Lewis Creek Baptist Church, Shelbyville
American Legion Post 70 and the Shelbyville Eagles Lodge.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters,
Linda Hackworth, Greensburg, Penny Cunckel,* Shelby County, and Theresa Aulby,
Waldron; a son, Wade Siefert, Shelbyville; two sisters, Joetta Lyons, Lumpo,
Calif., and Niola Small, Tipton; 10 grandchildren; and 13
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by one son.
Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Glenn
E. George Funeral Home in Shelbyville with the Rev. Cliff Bunch
officiating. Burial will be in Lewis
Creek Baptist Cemetery, Shelby County.
Calling was from 9 a.m. to time of the service today.

Dorothy Lee "Dot" Simpson, 71, of Tell City died Thursday, July 3,
1997, at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. She was born in
Tell City, was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and was secretary and
treasurer of Catholic Knights of America Branch No. 557. She was active in area
bowling leagues and was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves baseball
teams. She enjoyed playing bridge, crafting and quilting.
Survivors include her husband, Franklin T. Simpson; a son,
Thomas Simpson of Dayton, Ohio; three daughters, Karen Daum of Maple Grove,
Minn., Connie Grabert of Evansville and Lisa Fowler of Nashville, Tenn.; eight
grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Baysinger of Tell City.
Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Catholic
Church in Tell City. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Tell City.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Huber

Joseph D. Siscel, 87, of Evansville, died Friday afternoon
at Welborn Baptist Hospital.
He retired in 1973 after 40 years at Indiana Bell Telephone
Co.
He was a member of St. Matthews United Church of Christ,
the Retired Telephone Pioneers and the Bell Conservation Club.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Agnes; a daughter, Mary
Rose McBride of Evansville; three sons, James of Bicknell, Ind., and Larry and
Tom, both of Evansville; two sisters, Della Detzer of Troy, Ind., and Helen
VonBurgh of Rosedale, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A son, Richard Lee Siscel, died in 1969.*

Rhoda Ethel Smith died of natural causes on Saturday, April
19, 1997, in Boise.
Ethel was born Dec. 12, 1918, at Filer, Idaho, to William
S. and Martha O. Musick Kinkade. Growing up, Ethel lived in Washington for a
short time then the family moved to Dodge City, Kan., until she returned to
Idaho in 1947. As an adult Ethel also lived in California and Kansas, returning
permanently to Idaho in 1973.
In 1942 Ethel married LaVerne Melvin Huntinghouse; they
were later divorced. Ethel was a good mother, sister and friend. She was
admired by her family and had a special rapport with her nieces, nephews and their
friends. A single mother, Ethel worked as a waitress, riveter and ward clerk.
After retiring Ethel enjoyed working as a foster grandparent for 15 years, and
she received many awards for her services. Ill health forced her to stop
working as a foster grandparent in 1993.
Ethel is survived by her children Roger and Charles
Huntinghouse of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jeanette Mitchell of Jerome; her
brother, Robert Kinkade and sisters, Marlo Brokate and Laurel Jean Nightengale
of Boise; her grandsons, Dennis Mitchell of Jerome, John and Kenneth
Huntinghouse of Salt Lake City; and granddaughters, Jeannie Clemmer of Beale
Air Force Base, Calif., Susan Huntinghouse of Lancaster, Calif. and Rachel
Huntinghouse of Caldwell; great-grandchildren, Mason Clemmer, Heather and
Elizabeth Mitchell; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ethel requested cremation. Family memorial services will be
held in Jerome.

Starkey, 74, of White Oak Circle, Crossville, who passed away May 24, 1997,
were held May 27 at Liberty Baptist Church, with burial in Green Acres Memory
Gardens.
He was born Aug. 4, 1922, in Woodsfield, Ohio, the son of Russel and Elizabeth
Millbough Starkey. Mr. Starkey was a truck driver for Grimeyers Gateway
Transit, and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred
Starkey of Crossville; daughter, Janet L. Olson of Crossville; seven
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters Margaret Dalyrmple, Carol
Alloway and Wilma Jean Cline, all of Woodsfield, Ohio, and Alverna Campbell of
Acworth, Ga.; and brothers Charles Brown of Olathe, Kan., Kenneth Brown of
Creston, Ohio, and Cecil Brown of Woodsfield, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his
father, Russel Starkey; mother, Elizabeth Brown; stepfather, Clyde Brown;
sister, Bernice Brown; and brothers Chester and Roy Brown.

Kyle F. Stephen, age 83, of Canton, passed away Sunday
morning, April 6, 1997 in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Noble County, OH, Jan. 7, 1914 to the
parents of the late John and Mattie Stephen, he lived most of his life in the
Canton area and was a retired employee of Schneider's Lumber, retiring after
ten years of service. Mr. Stephen was a
member of Canton Baptist Temple.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother; two

Born March 30, 1925, in Sebring, he was the son of the late

He is survived by his wife, Betty A. Runion Stoffer, whom
he married Dec. 16, 1945.
Mr. Stoffer retired from General Motors Co. in 1987, after
working at the company's Lordstown Assembly plant.

Esther A. Tubaugh, 93, of 223 Oaklawn Ave., Woodsfield,
died May 13, 1997 in Barnesville Hospital.
She was born Feb. 15, 1904, in Monroe County, a daughter of the late
Henry and Lavinia Marty Tubaugh.
She grew up in Monroe County and attended local schools,
graduated from Ohio University, Athens, with a B.S. Degree, from Western
Reserve University, Cleveland, with a Master's Degree, and did graduate work at
The Ohio State University. She taught
English in the East Junior High School, then Harding Senior High School in
Warren. After retirement she returned
to Woodsfield where she made her home.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are a sister, Estelle Boston, Woodsfield Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center; one niece, Mrs. Charles (Patricia) Leach, Toledo;
four nephews, Norman Walters, Littleton, Colorado, John Kerr, of Newport, Harry
Tubaugh, of Washington NC, Dr. Charles R. Boston of San Diego, California.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Gussie, Bessie,
Blanche Tubaugh, Gertrude Walters, Ruth Kerr; three brothers, Russel, Wilbur
and Harry Tubaugh.
Friends were received May 15 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home,
Woodsfield, where services were held May 16, with Alvin Thompson
officiating. Interment followed in the
West Union Cemetery, near Sardis.
Ullman, Walter Gerald Ullman
Walter Gerald Ullman, 89,
formerly of Harriettsville and a resident of Heartland of Marietta since
1984, died Monday morning Dec 22, 1997 at Heartland.
He was born Dec 8, 1908, in
Harriettsville to Jacob and Louise Wallenfelz Ullman. He had owned and
operated a family farm for many years. He was a member of Zion Evangelical
Church near Harriettsville.
He is survivrd by one brother,
Vaughn J. Ullman and his wife, Freda, of Johnstown; and several nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; one brother, Roy R. Ullman; and one sister, Luna Ullman.
Services are at 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home in Caldwell. Burial is in Salem
Township Cemetery in Lower Salem. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. today at
the funeral home.

car racing.
Survivors include his wife, Paula

Velotta, both at home; his mother Elsie Louise Velotta of Owensboro; five

Mr.
Voland, 82, died Sunday afternoon, June 22, 1997, at Peoples Memorial Hospital,
Independence, after an apparent heart attack.
He was
born Feb. 3, 1915, in Chenoa, Ill., the son of George and Emma (Tull)
Voland. He moved with his family to the
Independence area and attended Jesup schools.
In the early 1940s, he married Jenny Stripes and the couple divorced in
the early 1960s. On Oct. 3, 1975, he
married Evelyn M. Davis in Newton. The
couple made their home in Independence.
Mr. Voland was employed as a truck driver with Iowa Road Builders for
more than 20 years, retiring in 1982.
Survivors
include his wife, Evelyn; one stepdaughter, Jewel A. (Chuck) Gullett of Newton;
four step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; and two stepsons, Harold E. and Rollin Davis.

PEORIA -- GeorgAnne Voland-Buck, 42, of Radford, Va.,
formerly of Peoria, died at 3:45 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 1997, at Roanoke Memorial
Hospital in Roanoke, Va.
Born Feb. 24, 1955, in Peoria to George W. and JoAnne M.
Leary Voland, she married John D. Buck. He survives.
Also surviving are her father of Peoria; her stepfather and
mother, Jack and JoAnne Leary of Peoria; three stepsons, David Buck of Radford,
Christopher Allerton of Charlottesville, Va., and Navy Lt. D. Todd Allerton of
Jacksonville, Fla.; two stepgranddaughters; and one brother, Mark Voland of
Fairview.
She was a full-time graduate student in the master of fine
arts program in arts administration and management at Virginia Tech. She
received her bachelor of arts degree theater from Radford University in
Radford.
She was a member of the Advisory Board of the Radford
University theater department and the board of directors of the Radford
University Arts Society.
After she graduated from Radford, she lived in Paris for 10
years, where she was the head of foreign languages and the director of the
Institut Europeen des Affaires.
Memorial services
will be at 3 p.m. today at Grace Episcopal Church in Radford. The family will
receive friends after services in the Parish Hall of the church. Cremation has
been accorded. Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford is in
charge of arrangements.

during World War II.

Department, with 47 years of service, and a member of the Trinity United Church
of Christ.

53, of Springfield passed
away at 7:45 p.m., Tuesday, November 4, 1997 in his residence. He was born May
12, 1944 in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Robert L. and Geneva A. (Anderson)
Whipp. Mr. Whipp was employed by Robbins & Myers, Incorporated and R. M.
Materials Handling, Incorporated for 31 and one half years. He served in the
United States Navy for four years being stationed at the United States Naval
Air Facilities in Naples, Italy and was involved with the Vernon Murphy
Baseball Association for 12 years.
His survivors include his wife, Sandra K. (Talbert) Whipp;
five children, Byron S. Whipp of Gahana, Ohio, Sheri K. Tingley, Tammy J.
Lewis, Lori L. Whipp and Lisa A. Jones, all of Springfield; ten grandchildren,

Born May 4, 1929 in Marietta, he
was the son of Emery and Golda Jackson Wise.

Wise was a 1947 graduate of Marietta High School, a retired member of International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers Local 972 and was a active member of Little Hocking Church of
Christ. He was an avid fisherman,
camper and traveler.
He is
survived by the wife of 46 years, Mary
Ida Castle; two sons, Leslie Wise of
Graysville and Jon Wise of Groveport; a
daughter Debra Surbey of Coolville; a
brother, Robert Wise of Ramayor,
Texas, and three sisters, Laretha
Butler of Marietta, Nancy Treadway of
Reno, and Linda McPherson and six grandsons.

self-employed building contractor, served in the Army during the Korean
Conflict, was an active trustee and head usher of the First Presbyterian Church
of Barnsville.

Virginia Elmore Zogg.
She was a
retired school teacher and administrator in the Los Angeles County School
system, Los Angeles, Calif.; a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ,
Woodsfield, Woodsfield Garden Club, Monroe County Historical Society and the
Ohio Historical Society, a graduate of University of West Virginia, and post
graduate of the University of Michigan.
Surviving
are a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Jean Zogg, of Bremerton,
Washington; a cousin and close friend, Betty Paulus, of Woodsfield and also
several other cousins; three nieces; one nephew; seven great-nieces and
nephews; one great-great-nephew.

He was born in Steubenville, Oct. 31, 1920, a son of the
late Roy C. and Stella M. Davis Woods.
He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy M. Barrett

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Powers Woods, whom he
married Sept. 8, 1972; a son, Dennis of Stow; two daughters, Janet of Seattle,
and Sheryl of Edmond, Okla; three sisters, Dolores Buchanan of North Port,
Fla., Mrs. Albert (Carol) Rotella of Columbus and Nancy W. Priest of Westfield,

died March 9 1997, in Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 12, 1914 in Monroe County, a daughter of the
late William and Minnie Yoe Geldmacher.
She was a
member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville, a Sunday School teacher,
youth fellowship advisor and a 4-H leader for many years. She was also a member of the Women's Guild
of Trinity United Church of Christ, The Barnhart Grange and the Wil-Sun
Ruritan.
Surviving
are a son, Michael Young, of Miltonsburg; three daughters, Iris Hartshorn, of
Lewisville, Carol Dougherty, of Freeport, Virginia Caivano, of El Cajon,
Calif.; two sisters, Wilma Christman, of Jerusalem and Melba Stouse, of Union,
MO.; several beloved grandchildren; several great grandchildren.

Mary I. Sykes Young, 86, of Louisville, passed away
July 1, 1997. She was born Sept. 6,
1910, in Canton, to the late Ernest and Sarah Nicholson Sykes.
She retired from
the U.S. Optical in Canton, was a member of the Grace Brethren Church in North
Canton, a volunteer at Aultman Hospital, past president of the Canton Council
PTA and a member of the Canton Garden Club.
Surviving
are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jane and Dale Rice-Winkler, of
Louisville, Beverly Young, of Boardman, and Carol and Gerald Grindstaff, of

in 1981; one son, Leslie Young; Two brothers, Ernest Sykes, Jr., and Richard
Sykes; a sister, Sarah Elizabeth Sykes.
Friends were
received July 2 and one hour before services on July 3 at the Stier-Israel
Funeral Home, Louisville, with Pastor Terrance Taylor of the Grace Brethren
Church officiating. Interment was in
West Lawn Cemetery.
