Elias, Theodore P. Elias

Source:  The Toledo [Ohio] Blade - Friday, March 13, 1998

Theodore P. Elias, 74, a decorated World War II airman, professional pool player, and a local aluminum siding contractor, died Wednesday, in his home.

Since January, he had been seriously ill with lung and brain cancer, his wife, Patsy, said.

From 1955 until his illness, he operated Fostoria Aluminum Siding Co., doing the selling and installations.

Born in Fairfield, Me., Mr. Elias at age 8 learned to play pool in an establishment operated by his father, the late William Elias. Completely self-taught, he soon became expert at the game and was especially good at straight pool, his wife said.

The game temporarily was put on hold while he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. A radio operator and a machine gunner, he was shot down over Yugoslavia and was reported missing in action for nine days as he and crewmen, with the help of the underground, safely reached allied lines, his wife said.

Medals he received included the Purple Heart, the air medal with three oak clusters, and an European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign service award with five Bronze Stars.

Upon leaving service, Mr. Elias made his new home, initially in Mansfield, O., and then in Fostoria.

Devoted to pool and billiards his entire life, he entered amateur and professional competitions and was recognized as one of the outstanding national players.

''He was known as a money player,'' Mrs. Elias said. ''We had a table in our home, and top-rated players from all over the country came to compete individually.

''My husband played against many well-known experts, and frequently won.''

His first major professional win was in 1968 at the Stardust Open Professional Billiard Tournament in Nevada, his wife recalled. In addition to Ohio tournaments, he traveled to many states to compete.

''He was a gentleman of the game, highly respected by all and an inspiration to players,'' his wife said.

He won top honors in many other competitions, both amateur and professional. Wins in recent years before he gave up the game to devote more time to his business, included a third place in the 1994 World 8 Ball Team Tournament and first in the 1996 OCMA Valley League State Tournament.

He was member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Patsy, and brothers, Edward and Richard Elias.

The body will be in the Mann-Hare Mortuary, Fostoria, after 1 p.m. today. Services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow in St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria.

Phyllis McCurdy  dies  at  69;  loved  job  at  nursing  home

By Kelly Treadway, Argus Leader Staff

FLANDREAU -- Phyllis McCurdy didn't retire from her job at the Riverview Manor Nursing Home in Flandreau until she was 68.

She was doing work that she loved, said her son, Ron Christensen of Sioux Falls.  Mrs. McCurdy cared for the elderly in the nursing home for the past 20 years as a nurse's aide, cook and friend.

Phyllis McCurdy, 69, died Sunday, March 8, 1998, in McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Mrs. McCurdy was a nurse's aide for the first 15 years she worked in the nursing home and cooked all the meals served in the home for five years.  Mr. Christensen said his mother also was active in the community life of the nursing home.  She lived in an apartment in the home after her home burned down in 1991.

"She enjoyed entertaining the residents, often singing to them at programs and while she was cooking.  They really appreciated that.  She also attended church with them," Mr. Christensen said.

Mr. Christensen said his mother was a spunky person who liked to joke and have fun.  She also was a person who spoke her mind.

"She would flat out tell people the way it was.  You always knew where you stood with her.  She felt it was important to speak what was on her mind, and not put it off," he said.  "She knew that problems only grow bigger when you don't talk about them."

When there was a spare moment, Mrs. McCurdy was cross-stitching or embroidering, said Mr. Christensen.  His mother made gifts for the nursing home residents, family and friends.  She liked to make quilts, pillow cases and couch throw covers.  Mrs. McCurdy also enjoyed crossword puzzles and old Western movies, especially John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies, her son said.

Mrs. McCurdy treasured her dog, Itty-bit, said her son.  The dog has lived with her son since she moved to the apartment in the nursing home.

"She loved animals and always had a dog at home.  When Itty-bit lived with her, she'd cook right off the stove for her.  Whatever she made for herself, the dog got a plate too," said Mr. Christensen.

"Itty-bit looked like a walking pillow when she moved to our home.  When Mom came to visit, the dog went nuts.  Mom would give her food under the table, and she slept with Mom at night, right on her pillow."

Phyllis Lamp was born March 5, 1929, in Austin, Minn.  She attended school in Flandreau.  She married Stanley Christensen in 1947.

She married Ronald McCurdy March 26, 1972, in Brookings.  He died Jan. 30, 1990.

She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and WELCA.

In addition to her son, survivors include her children:  Karen Johnson of Pioneer, Ohio; Jean "Jaye"  Walker of Norfolk, Neb.; and Michael and Martha Ziegenhagen of New Britain, Conn.; 13 grandchilden; several great-grandchildren; two brothers:  Gary Lamp of Eustace, Texas, and Loren Lamp; and one sister, Nila Cleveland.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery in Flandreau.

Visitation will be at 2 p.m. today in the funeral chapel.

**Submitter's Note:  His daughter, Lynda Turner, made this correction:  "The newspaper made a mistake in saying he moved to Oldtown after his retirement. He had moved from Vay, Idaho, in 1949 to work at the sawmill and didn't leave there until around 1996 when he went to a senior citizens housing complex and later to the nursing home."
