Albright, Richard Walter Albright

Source:  The Long Beach [Calfornia] Press-Telegram - Sunday, July 2, 2006

Richard Walter Albright As a falling star illuminates within its earthly reach before its light is fully extinguished, so did Richard "Papa Bear" Albright allow us all to shine during his brilliant path here before his passing on June 6, 2006. Anyone who knew Richard would tell you though his passing date of 06/06/06 happens once in a millennium, a lifelight of his quality is ever more remarkable.

Richard Walter Albright was born in Long Beach, CA on October 7, 1938 to Martyn Barr and Ruby Thora Albright. He had a lifelong passion for athletics and still competed in marathons, Marine Corps events and triathlons. Richard was extremely patriotic and a proud Marine, having served his country during the Vietnam War as a Helicopter Air Crew Man. After retiring from the CYA and settling in Los Osos, Richard enjoyed his passions for Mother Nature, working out, gardening and special friendships. Papa Bear "belonged" to everyone he knew because he embraced all equally. He was an o riginal who walked his own path, sharing a kind word with all along the way. As long as you operated out of good intentions, he accepted you into his realm of warmth, compassion, protection and mischievious good humor. Richard was a man of many accomplishments..he was a medal-winning bicyclist, a gifted gardener, and decorated Marine. But what he considered his greatest accomplishment was the number of people he loved and was loved by. He was a proud and devoted son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He especially enjoyed teaching his many nieces and nephews how to camp, fish, play sports and be good citizens. There are few people in Los Osos and Morro Bay who didn't know Papa Bear from his many hikes with his beloved friend Oso. Although he thanked Oso for the "Miles of Smiles", it is we, the many who benefited from the "Miles of Smiles" he provided, who are now wishing many more in return to you, Papa Bear, on your new adventure. We would suggest that you not pull any practical jokes until t he gates of heaven are securely closed behind you!

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Martyn Barr and Ruby Thora Albright and brother, Byron Eugene Albright. He is survived and greatly missed by his son, Bruce of Los Osos; his beloved dog, Oso; granddaughters, Chantelle and Brittney; brother, Martyn (Norma); brother, Gary (Patti); sister, Ethel (Art); sister, Bettye (Verne); sister-in-law, Helen; many nieces and nephews; best friend of over 60 years, Bob Riley; his extended family in Los Osos including adopted daughters, Lisa, Elaine and Leslie; Terry, Brian and many more friends and fellow pranksters. P.S.     Preparation=Victory In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to CAMP ERUTAN (a camp for children in foster care), PO Box 6730, Los Osos, CA 93412.

A Celebration of Richard's life will be held on Tuesday, July 4 at 10 am at the top of Ravenna Drive at Highland in Los Osos. Walk up the hill to the prayer bench (2nd turnoff to the right, approx. 1/4 mile). Please sign the guestbook at Presstelegram.com obituary page. Benedict-Rettey Mortuary (805) 772-7382.

 Buchholzer, Richard B. Buchholzer (obit 1 of 3 – see obits 2 & 3 below)

Source:  The Akron [Ohio] Beacon Journal, Editorial; Thurs., Feb. 09, 2006

Richard B. Buchholzer Akron builder's generous spirit leaves an indelible mark.  Few people have left their mark so indelibly on the Akron landscape as Dick Buchholzer. From Chapel Hill Mall to Rolling Acres, his vision for the future took shape. Still, the impact of his life can be felt far beyond what people can see.

Simply, Richard Barton Buchholzer, who died Monday at age 89, loved Akron. Trips out of town, whether for pleasure or to lure business to Ohio, merely served to stoke his passion for this city.

He was born into business, the son of J.J. and Kathleen Buchholzer, grocery store owners in Newton Falls. The family later bought and resuscitated the Hower Department Store in East Akron, where Mr. Buchholzer learned the retail business from the inside out. He foresaw the need for quality nursing home care, rebuilding the closed department store into Middlebury Manor Nursing Home. He promoted inner-city development with the then-innovative Schoolhouse Antiques in historic Grace School. He had a gift for real estate, and he and his father began to acquire land in burgeoning postwar Akron. Mr. Buchholzer had a knack for knowing where people would be moving, where they would be traveling, where they would be spending their money. Chapel Hill is testament to that vision.

But Mr. Buchholzer didn't measure his accomplishments in acreage or profit and loss. His greatest love was for the people of this city, his quiet generosity touching hundreds of lives.

He devoted more than 35 years to the Beacon Journal Charity Fund, which his father helped to create and which helps needy children with eyeglasses and dental work. He gave himself to many local causes, among them the Boy Scouts, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens and what has evolved into the Greater Akron Chamber. Characteristically, his pockets were always full of tokens for the carousel at Chapel Hill because he wanted kids to have fun.

Mr. Buchholzer never sought the spotlight, but built so his beloved city would prosper. It has.

Buchholzer, Richard Barton Buchholzer  (obit 3 of 3)

Source: Akron [Ohio] Beacon Journal; February 8th & 9th, 2006

Richard B. (Dick) Buchholzer, a man of vision, an entrepreneur, a businessman and community leader, whose career over a period of 60 years had a significant impact on Akron and the surrounding area, passed away on Feb. 6, 2006, at the age of 89.

He was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Alliance, Ohio, the son of Julius Johannes (JJ) Buchholzer and Kathleen Shaw Buchholzer. The family moved to Akron in 1923. Dick graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School, attended Mt. Union College, and studied law at the University of Akron. He served in the Ohio National Guard for three years.

At an early age, Dick started working for his father (JJ), who owned Hower Department Store in East Akron. Over the years he and his father forged a dynamic team of retailing, business, and real estate development. In the late 1940s they began acquiring land for development in strategic parts of the Akron area. After the loss of his father, Dick, with his partners, Forest City Enterprises, developed and opened Chapel Hill Mall in 1964, which Dick managed. The mall became known as ``The Friendliest Mall of All." Rolling Acres Mall was opened in 1975. Other commercial and residential properties were also developed.

With the closing of Hower Department Store, Dick had the foresight to turn the building into Middlebury Manor Nursing Home. He became a licensed nursing home administrator and managed the facility in its first years. Ever seeking new challenges, Dick bought the former Grace Elementary School, which he converted into an antique mall--School House Antiques.

In his later years, he became very interested in the storage business and planned, built, and managed two successful self- storage facilities.

Ever the advocate of Akron and the State of Ohio, Dick was a "Rhodes Raider" and an Ohio Commodore, joining with the governor and other Ohio businessmen on a number of foreign missions, traveling to Asia and Europe promoting Akron and the State of Ohio, which resulted in several companies locating in the Akron area.

Over the years Dick contributed greatly to the Akron area, receiving many accolades and awards for his community leadership.

He was supportive and active in a number of local organizations such as the Akron Regional Development Board, the Beacon Journal Charity Fund, Akron Community Foundation, Stan Hywet Hall, Leadership Akron, Blue Coats, Great Trail Council Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, and United Way, to name a few. He was a Layman Advisor to the National Unity Churches. Dick was a member of Fairlawn and Portage country clubs.

Dick was known to always carry a camera and take candid pictures of dignataries and friends who later loved receiving personalized photographs of these moments in time. He was also known to be an avid golfer.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Frances, and stepdaughter, Elizabeth Sturtevant. He leaves his beloved sister, Eleanor Buchholzer Erickson; his brother, Bruce; and sister-in-law, Edna Buchholzer. Also surviving him are nieces, Karen Buchholzer Stevens and Julie Buchholzer, and nephew, Mark W. Erickson. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard (Rick) B. Buchholzer, and brother, Wendell.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1361 W. Market St., with Rev. Sandra Selby officiating. Friends may call at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Richard B. Buchholzer Memorial Fund, care of the Beacon Journal Charity Fund, 333 S. Main St. Suite 319, Akron, Ohio 44308. This special memorial fund will assist needy children with orthodontic treatment. Buchholzer, Richard Barton Buchholzer (obit 2 or 3)

Source:  The Akron [Ohio] Beacon Journal, Business Section;Wed., Feb. 08, 2006 Developer Buchholzer dead at 90. Mall pioneer changed landscape of Akron By Mary Ethridge, Beacon Journal business writer

Richard Barton Buchholzer, whose  pioneering retail developments permanently shaped the Akron landscape and economy, died Monday night. He was 90.

Born on Feb. 19, 1915,** in Alliance to a retailing family, Mr. Buchholzer was a primary developer and 50 percent owner of Chapel Hill Mall in Akron.

He was also a force behind the construction of Rolling Acres Mall in southwest Akron near the Barberton border. He owned a 25 percent interest in that mall for years, eventually selling his share to partner Forest City Enterprises of

Cleveland.

Mr. Buchholzer and Forest City had at least three other commercial ventures together, including the Chapel Hill Apartments and Middlebury Manor nursing home near downtown Akron. One of his more recent business projects involved the construction and operation of storage units.

``Dick invested in Akron and had confidence in the city's future at a time when few people did,'' said Akron Mayor Donald L. Plusquellic. ``The best tribute to him is the number of families who were able to be supported through his investments in the city.''

Mr. Buchholzer's first job was weighing produce at his father's grocery store in Newton Falls in Trumbull County. He was so young that his parents wrapped a butcher's apron around him and stood him on a box because he couldn't reach the scale, he recalled a few years ago.

When Mr. Buchholzer's family moved to Akron's North Hill, he worked at one of his father's meat markets as a delivery boy.

In 1932, his father, J.J. Buchholzer, bought the Hower Co. department store in East Akron out of receivership, and young Dick went to work as a salesman.

He began college at Mount Union in Alliance, but soon transferred to the University of Akron so he could spend more time in the family business. Mr. Buchholzer never lost his passion for retail. He went to his office at Chapel Hill Mall nearly every day until he and Forest City sold the mall and nearby stores in 2004 for $78.1 million. He was 89 at the time.

``What a ball of fire he was. What a visionary,'' said Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Robart, who was a friend of Mr. Buchholzer's. ``He was one of the dearest people I've ever known.''

Mr. Buchholzer contributed to the campaigns of Mayor Robart and several other area Republican candidates. Mr. Buchholzer's second wife, Francis Seiberling Buchholzer, has been a longtime figure in the Summit County GOP. He was divorced from his first wife, Merian, in 1975. They had one child, Richard B. Buchholzer Jr., who died in 1999.

When Mr. Buchholzerwas a young man, he used to take a .22-caliber rifle and head up to the 187 acres of undeveloped land his father owned on an Akron hill at the intersection of Howe and Brittain roads.

Once, he came upon the remains of what had been an Indian council circle.

Years later, when he was building one of the country's first enclosed shopping malls on that land, he remembered the ring. It occurred to him that the tribal circle was probably the closest thing those native Americans had to a chapel. He named his development Chapel Hill.

Shopping malls

The 75-store Chapel Hill, which opened in 1967, was to be the first enclosed shopping mall in the region, but delays gave Edward DeBartolo's Summit Mall in Fairlawn that title.

The mall, burdened by construction debt, went through some difficult times during the 1970s when massive layoffs in the tire industry shook Akron to its core. But the business rebounded nicely in the late 1980s, and in recent years has had nearly 100 percent occupancy rate, the best in the region.

Mr. Buchholzer was also instrumental in the building of Rolling Acres. In a partnership with Forest City, Mr. Buchholzer conceived a two-story showplace on another of Akron's grassy hills. He eventually sold his Rolling Acres share to Forest City but kept his eye on the mall, which has since changed hands three times.

Mr. Buchholzer liked to relax by playing golf at Portage Country Club, where he was a member. He worked on his game with a passion, said Rod Johnston, longtime golf pro at Portage. ``He loved his golf. Even when his swing was deteriorating as he got older, he'd be out working on it,'' Johnston said. Mr. Buchholzer attended the club's annual golf trip to Palm Springs, Calif., several years. One year, Mr. Buchholzer had a heart attack there. During the following year's trip, Mr. Buchholzer rented out a restaurant to entertain and thank all of the medical professionals who contributed to his recovery. ``That's just the way he was,'' Johnston said. ``Always thinking about others.'' Family friend and attorney Robert Malone agreed. ``He never talked about himself,'' he said. ``He was a great gentleman.''

Mr. Buchholzer was active in Akron community affairs. He was a longtime president of the Beacon Journal Charity Fund and helped form the Akron Progress Board, now the Akron Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Buchholzer's survivors include his wife, Francis, brother Bruce and sister Eleanor. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Burns, Berniece Burns, nee Lang

Beloved Bremerton Principal Berniece Burns Dies at 94

Berniece Lang Burns, a lifelong teacher and Principal who began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Fairfield, Idaho and retired from Bremerton's Crown Hill Elementary forty years later, died of complications associated with old age at Young at Heart Adult Home.

Mrs. Burns was born in Canova, South Dakota in 1911, subsequently moving with her parents, Andrew and Margaret Lang, to Twin Falls, Idaho where they settled to homestead. Graduating from Twin Falls High School in 1929, she then attended Albion Normal School where she earned a teaching certificate. In 1931 she began her teaching career accepting a position in Fairfield, Idaho situated in the wheat and cattle ranching region on the Camas Prairie. She taught all subjects in a one-room schoolhouse, grades one through eight, while living with a local family. Later she met and married her husband Theodore (Mike) Burns (who preceded her in death in 1992 just short of their 60th wedding anniversary).

With the outbreak of World War II in 1942 the Burns family left Idaho for Bremerton taking up temporary residence in the housing area of East Park until they purchased their first home on 6th St. That same year Mrs. Burns, still with her provisional teaching certificate, started teaching the third grade at Olympic View Elementary. At war's end and aware a permanent certificate would be required to continue teaching, Mrs. Burns enrolled at Western Washington College of Education in Bellingham receiving her bachelor's degree in 1953 followed by a master's degree from the University of Washington in 1966. After seven years at Olympic View, Mrs. Burns then served as Assistant Principal at Sheridan Elementary, Principal at Central Elementary, Marion Elementary, and principal at the original Crown Hill, which was later, destroyed by fire. She retired in 1971 following a bout with cancer.

After retiring, the Burns's purchased a second home in California and spent every winter enjoying the sunshine. They also enjoyed traveling; making a number of extensive tours to the Far East, Europe, and the Middle East that included one harrowing event. When preparing to depart Egypt for home Mrs. Burns's husband fell ill forcing them to change flights. Their intended TWA flight, sitting on the tarmac at the Cairo airport, was suddenly attacked by a group of terrorists that forced the pilot to take off with all passengers aboard. The hijacking terminated at the Athens airport with the murder of an innocent American serviceman and the capture and death of the hijackers. The Burns' arrived home safely.

Both she and her husband were lifelong active members of Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Throughout her life she was known as a generous and kindhearted woman who loved children deeply, most particularly her young students whom she remembered by retaining and showing off her collection of student class photos.

She is survived by her daughter Peggy Ann McDermott and husband, Frank of Ocean Pines, MD, and her son Dr. Theodore Burns Jr. and wife, Betsy of Bremerton; her siblings Marie Ybarguen, Frances Worth, John Lang of California, Agnes Zeman of Oregon, Florence Amies of Ellensburg and Stella Powlus of Idaho; as well as 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren survive her. Services at 11:00 will held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton. Burial will be with her husband at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at 12721 30th Avenue NE, Suite 101, Seattle, WA 98125-4312.
