My Aunt Jan                                                                    By her niece Betty Kitchen

May 3, 2006

.

Although today we gather to “officially” say goodbye to Jan Latta, my Aunt Jan, I am sure that all of us here will agree that she will always be with us.  She was such a vital part of our growing up.  Although biologically she may have had no children, she certainly mothered my cousins David, Don and me, and the generations to follow.  We were always welcome at her house.  Bring our friends?  She’d say, “Sure, will be glad to see them.” So we did.  And she was truly glad to have us all there.

.

Although she never married, she has always been the uniting force in this family.  It was Aunt Jan who cared for her aging grandparents.  It was Aunt Jan who cared for her own mother.  And it was Aunt Jan who spoiled David, Don and me.  We (the whole Latta family) were at their house almost every weekend that her father was home from Chicago. I think this was about twice a month during my childhood. She cooked a wonderful meal, and there was much laughter.  I know she especially spoiled me.  I was a picky eater.  Dad used to make me gag down a big spoonful of Black Strap Molasses to supposedly make me eat.  It was used with cattle, but I’m not sure it was meant for human consumption.  I liked Aunt Jan’s approach better.  She knew that I loved chicken and noodles so she ALWAYS made me chicken and noodles.  The rest of the family having beef stroganoff?  Yep, but I got chicken and noodles anyway.

.

At family gatherings most of the adults would go in the other room and talk.  For kids, this is of course, very, very boring.  So Aunt Jan and Grandma would spoil us.  They’d play cards with us kids or some other games at the big dining room table.  We all enjoyed it so.  I got to stay for a whole week during the summers.  We had Monopoly games that lasted the whole time.  She would let me change the rules a little.  I didn’t have to get all the properties of a certain color to buy houses.  We did some gardening, tried to catch the “Grinnies” which most people know as chipmunks and explored the wonderful closets upstairs.  They were wonderful weeks.

.

Here are some stories that she shared with me that I think you will enjoy too.

.

Her father’s parents and many aunts and uncles still lived in Monroe County when she was a kid. The train ride then from Canton to Monroe County was 5 or 6 hours Usually her dad only took the three older boys, but she remembered one time when the whole family went down. When they got there, it had been raining cats and dogs.  It was so muddy.  Her dad carried either her or Vernon and Uncle Tom carried the other, and her mother (Effie) carried her skirts.  Aunt Jan was about 10 the last time she went to visit her Grandma Latta (Mary Jane) in Monroe County.  Grandma told her she had the most beautiful hands she had ever seen. Aunt Jan figured her Grandmother had seen a lot of hands in her day; and since Jan had just done her nails, she kept on doing them the rest of her life.   Mary Jane died in 1927.    And when I was little, Aunt Jan continued the tradition and did my nails too.

.

As a child Aunt Jan also always had to wear a bonnet outside and was not allowed to go barefoot.  (That bonnet must have paid off because she always had very smooth skin.  No wrinkles even when she was older.) The bonnets always had strings to tie under her chin so she could run with the boys without it blowing off.  Here is one–hope you can see her running across the grass with it perched on her head.

.

When Aunt Jan was little she loved playing with paper dolls.  Her mother would get fashion magazines but the pages did not show clothes in color so she saved the tissue paper and colored linings from envelopes to make doll clothes with color.  She never did like drab things--bright and bold for Aunt Jan.  Red was her favorite.  She played a lot with her little cousin Marie.  In later life Marie told Jan that she enjoyed reading so well because of all the many, many times Jan read to her when she was little.

.

I noticed on Aunt Jan’s old report cards that she missed a lot of school (36 days some years), and of course asked why.  She said she had very bad earaches as a kid.  They would drain, and she could not walk in the cold to school.

.

Both Aunt Jan and my dad Vernon spent a lot of time, especially in the summers, at their Grandmother and Grandfather Schaub's down the road from here in East Sparta.  (Dad would have been here today but is working through his own health issues.)   Aunt Jan always had to dress up for the train ride there to see her Grandparents.  She left play clothes at the Schaubs since she was there so often.  Once Aunt Jan lost her hair ribbon at Grandma Schaub's, and Grandma almost didn't let her go home, but she had school the next day.  It just wasn't proper to go on the train without your hair ribbons.  (Grandma had found the errant ribbon by the next time Jan arrived.)  Most weekends some of the Latta kids and Schaub cousins were there.  She told me about playing monopoly with Aunt Maggie, Junior and everyone during the depression.

.

There were no electric lines from East Sparta until about l928, and Aunt Jan remembered  how she used to like cleaning the oil lamps.  Grandma Schaub had a cow named Janey, so her mother Effie really did not like Janedith to be called "Janey."   Although Aunt Jan has never been as crazy about cats as Krystal, Valerie, or me, she did like Grandma Schaub's orange cat, Emily.  She also remembered the horse named Jimbo that bit her brother Don who was teasing him.  She was there when the armistice of World War I was announced on the radio.  She remembered how Elton and the older boys were celebrating by beating on the old wash tubs and creating a real noise.  Everyone was so happy that Uncle Wes was coming home.

.

Jan used to play dominoes and euchre with Grandpa Schaub while Grandma Schaub crocheted.  When they were older, she remembers driving out to their farm at 11:30 p.m. or midnight, after she had dropped off her Dad to catch the train  to Chicago, to stay with them.  She learned to drive at a very young age and chauffered her family a lot.

.

She went to Trump Road School then to an all girls high school - Mount Marie which later became Central Catholic High School.  Of course she had to wear uniforms in those days, and much of her class work was centered around the arts, Latin, Spanish, the classics.  She loved the opera.  I brought one of her oils so you can all see how talented she was.

.

When Aunt Jan was a sophomore her friend Angeline had a Cadillac and provided much of Jan's transportation and good times. Alas, the Cadillac graduated, and Jan's best friend became Hilda Schneider.  It was a friendship that continued throughout her life.  When she was at Altercare, she often told me how thankful she was that they could talk often on the phone and still see one another now and then.

.

She was also thankful that she was so close to David and Maxine when she came to Altercare and she enjoyed their Sunday visits.  It was a blessing when Krystal got a job there and could stop in on her working days.  Knowing that Vicky was always there for her too was a great comfort.  She got back so much of the love that she had given away all those years.

.

Yes, it always has been Aunt Jan who has brought this family together.  We have all learned so much from her about giving, about loving, about coping.  She will always be such a role model for us.  She went through so many difficult times.  She did not complain.  She did what had to be done, then went on.  I do think she was ready to go on now too.

.

Our five-year-old granddaughter Madison has been saying the prayer at the evening meal.  For the past year, it has always been the same.  “Thank you God for this food.  Help Aunt Janie to feel better.”  I think that Madi’s prayer has come through.  I’m sure that now she is feeling better.  Her body of late was such a burden to her free spirit.  I have hopes that she is rejoicing in reuniting with the family she loved so well, and we will see her again someday.  And I know she’ll be glad to see us, like always.  She’ll probably open with what so many of us have heard before, “Well, what do you know that I don’t know?”     By her niece Betty Kitchen

Moore, Jana L. Moore, nee Frye

Suspect   jailed   after   Linton   woman   killed

Source:  www.tribstar.com/...linton.../article; August, 2006

A Linton woman was killed Friday afternoon when she pulled into her driveway to discover her house being robbed, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Janice “Jana” Moore, 47, arrived at her rural Greene County home to find Shawn M. Siener leaving her house, the affidavit said. Siener allegedly shot her twice, the first time in the head, the Greene County court document read.

Siener had gone to the house seeking “vengence” against Moore’s sons, Jeremiah, Jordan and Levi — whom he had gotten in a fight with Wednesday, the affidavit signed by Indiana State Police Detective Kevin Getz said. Siener told Indiana State Police Detective Paul Suding that he had gone to the Moore’s home armed with a .357 handgun, a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun and a .22 caliber rifle with the intent of killing the “Moore boys,” the court document read.

Siener arrived at the home around 3 p.m. Friday, shot the lock off the garage door and loaded a vacuum cleaner and power washer in his blue Chevy truck, the affidavit said.

He allegedly enter [sic--entered] the house through an unlocked door and took some Xbox games, DVDs and two swords.

Jordan Moore called police at about 3:53 p.m. to report his mother and brother, Jeremiah missing when he went home and found the house had been ransacked, the affidavit said. A couple minutes later, he called back to report he found his mother dead in her red Dodge Stratus.

Jordan and Levi Moore told the police they thought Siener was responsible, the affidavit said.

Later that evening, three people told police Siener had told them what he did, the affidavit said.

Linton Police officer Chad Crynes found Siener driving his blue Chevy truck and brought him in for questioning. Siener waived his Miranda rights and gave a detailed confession to the killing of Jana Moore and the burglary, the affidavit said. Siener allegedly told police that when Janice Moore arrived home, he tried to explain to her why he was at her residence, but that she told him she was calling police. As Moore reached for her cell phone, Siener stated that he shot her twice, according to the affidavit, because he had to keep her from calling authorities.

Siener also led detectives to the site where he had left the items from the burglary and admitted to shooting the family’s dog, as well, the affidavit said.

Siener is charged with murder, burglary, theft and cruelty to an animal, the affidavit said.

Members of the Moore family could not be reached for comment.

Oldemeyer, Robert King Oldemeyer

Source:  The Loveland [Colorado] Daily Reporter Herald; 24 Apr 2006

Sept. 23, 1922 - April 20, 2006

Robert King OLDEMEYER of Longmont, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Berthoud Living Center after long and courageous battles with Lewy Body Disease and diabetes.

Bob was born Sept. 23, 1922, in Brush, Colo., where he grew up on a farm and graduated from Brush High School in 1940. He was the second Oldemeyer generation of four (so far) to graduate from Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University). His time at A&M saw the beginning of his 62-year partnership with his wife, Shirley, and was interrupted by service as First Lieutenant in the Third Armored Division of the U.S. Army in Europe as a forward observer and as part of the occupation army during World War II. After the war, he and Shirley lived in a tiny trailer in Fort Collins with their first baby while Bob worked and earned his B.S. degree in agronomy, graduating second in his class. He then moved to the University of Wisconsin where, in 1950, he earned his Ph.D. in plant genetics.

In 1950, the Oldemeyer family, complete with a second daughter, drove into Longmont, where Bob started his lifelong career as a sugar beet plant breeder at Great Western Sugar Company and its successor seed companies. Bob became widely respected in his field, mentoring new breeders at Great Western and consulting with others worldwide. His daughters fondly recall how they bragged to their friends about the stream of foreign visitors who came to consult with their father and who dined at their home when such things were rare in the '50s and '60s. Bob always felt fortunate that his business travel took him to such diverse places as Chile, Iran and Europe, which supplemented the many trips he and Shirley took over the years, often with their family. After having served for several years as the Director of the research station, finally for Hilleshog Mono-Hy, Inc., he retired in 1989, continuing to serve on its board of directors. Bob was an editor and monthly columnist for the Sugar Journal, and many professional awards and memberships highlighted his career. Of special delight to him was the fact that his brother also was a sugar beet plant breeder in Oregon.

Bob Oldemeyer's passion for life (he dearly wanted to live to be 100), his love of living things and cultures, and his optimism and curiosity about the future marked all of his days. He grew with the times, supporting the open and affirming policy of First Congregational Church. He loved wildflowers, and some of his many photos are found in the New York Botanic Gardens volumes of "Wild Flowers of the United States." He joyfully danced at the Hoops and Ties (square dance) and M & M dance clubs. Bob and Shirley were fixtures at the Longmont Symphony, Community Theater, and hundreds of plays in Denver. His bird feeder was never empty.

But his family remembers best his love for growing things and making them better, at home, in the church and community, as well as work. "Our house was always full of seeds," his daughters recall. "For years, he sorted gallons of wheat, seed by seed, for busy farmers to show at the Boulder County Fair. Vegetable and flower seeds for spring planting with us girls, to whom he passed on his love of gardening, were ubiquitous. He could go nowhere without gathering seeds from interesting plants. To set the table or wash clothes, Mother first had to deal with seeds. At the end of his life, he was collecting rose seeds and preparing them to plant for breeding purposes. All of our friends and neighbors were recipients of the gladiolas, roses, fruits and vegetables that he bred and grew." Any red beet grown today almost certainly has a critical commercial gene that Bob bred for Northrup King Seed Company, who patented his work.

Bob's community involvement began with his move to Longmont. Early on, he served as President of the Longmont Jaycees and spearheaded the drive to include fluoride in city water. His years of work at the Boulder County Fair and with his daughters as 4-H Garden Champions earned the KLMO Fair Family of the Year award. For the city, he served on the Longmont Library Board and the Human Relations Board, which was charged with improving relations between segments of the community. Bob was a member of the board of directors and acted as treasurer of the Longmont OUR Center during four of its difficult early years until 1993, and was an enthusiastic Rotarian and a member of the St. Vrain Rose Society.

Besides keeping the gardens of First Congregational Church of Longmont beautified with flowers every year, Bob served on the United Church of Christ (UCC) National Board of Home Missions, as moderator for the Northeast Association of the UCC and First Congregational Church, on the building committee for the church on Ninth Avenue, and on numerous other committees and boards. Some years, it was nearly his second home.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Gayle (King) and Clarence L. Oldemeyer.

His survivors include his wife, Shirley Oldemeyer; daughters, Janine Reid of Hull, Mass., and Kristin Moyer of Littleton; brother Donald Oldemeyer of Nyssa, Ore.; sister Beverly Decker of Colorado Springs; grandchildren Zella Janine Oldemeyer and Sterling Robert Oldemeyer of CSU and Littleton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held later in the spring upon the completion of the First Congregational Church sanctuary renovation. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church building fund or to the Longmont OUR Center and sent to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry Street Longmont 80501. Riemenschneider, Richard L. Riemenschneider

Monroe County Beacon, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, August 10, 2006

Richard L. Riemenschneider, 93, passed away at Whetstone Gardens in Columbus, Aug. 5, 2006. He was born Oct. 25, 1912, in Bethesda to the late Dora White and Samuel H. Riemenschneider.

He graduated from Woodsfield High School, class of 1931, and attended engineering school in Indiana. In 1935 he married Evelyn Young and in 1942 they moved to Zanesville where he accepted a position with the USDA Soil Conservation Service, Muskingum County. His soil conservation work with ponds, tile drainage, diversions, tree planting, contour strips and water ways made him well known to farmers throughout Muskingum County.

He lived in Zanesville for 60 years, was a 65 year member of the Masonic Lodge and his favorite hobbies were golf and making miniature furniture from metal cans. His wife died in 1997 and in 2001 he moved to Columbus to be near his niece, Lois Chamberlain. He had an enthusiasm for life that touched all who knew him. He always found the best side of everyone in his world.

To members of his family, his natural talents and insatiable curiosity were legendary. This innate ability and self-confidence led him to excel in positions normally reserved for persons with far more extensive formal preparation. His curiosity about the world and how it worked led him and Evelyn to use their vacation time to explore every state in the union and travel throughout the world. His profound philosophy of life led him, as a young man, to be baptized into Christ at the Bush Church of Christ in Monroe County and to live a life of deep consideration for others.

His last days were occupied with finishing pieces of his miniature furniture in order to fulfill his promise to people who had admired his hobby. He lived life fully with deep appreciation of what he had been given. In March of this year he learned that he had cancer. His determined will and upbeat personality carried him through weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments with the hope for a few more years. When he learned that these treatments had not been successful, he essentially said goodbye to those around him and died peacefully in his sleep a few days later.

Surviving are nieces and nephews, Lois Chamberlain, Joan Shepherd, Richard and Gary Baker, Beverly Betz, Jack King, Shirley Jackson, Paul Young, Robert Young and Janet Sue Matinka and many great-great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years; four sisters, Bernice Moore, Kathryn Baker, Inez Jackson and Anna Lee Jackson.

At Richard’s request, there will be a private family graveside service at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Miltonsburg Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society or the Miltonsburg Cemetery Association, c/o Geneva Landefeld, 36110 Baltimore Rd., Woodsfield, OH 43793
