16.  John HINDS,,,, was born about 1810 in VA.  He died about Jul 1851 in Pleasants Co, WV.  John was born about 1810 in Virginia.  No parents have been found for him. The Hines\Hinds families have been told that a grandfather was thought to have been Native American.  He married into a white family and took their last name of Hines. John Hines was believed to be the son of this Native American Grandfather and possibly was half “Native American."  At the time that Wyandot tribe was required to leave the State of Ohio, John Hines moved his entire family from Monroe Co., to Tyler Co., WVA.  It is not known for sure to which Hines family he was a relative.

Note: The title bond record had the words "or their" inserted above a caret mark , but all other words in parentheses have been inserted by cousin, Scott A. Britton (descendant of William S. McKnight and Susan Hinds) for clarity or to bring up oddities or spelling questions.  All capitalization and spelling was copied directly as written.  Scott thinks John was ill with some illness from which he knew he would die soon.  It seems he wrote the bond note on July 26, 1850 to the Logans. It was presented by the Logans to the county clerk on July 28, 1851 following John's death; transferred all property and possessions to the said Logans on July 1, 1852; the appraisers then found no land or possessions besides his half ownership of a Broad Axe with his brother-in-law, Maxwell Dearth, on September 4, 1852 to close out his estate.  He assumes John died around July 28, 1851.  After John's death, Sarah married John Nalley in 1854 in Monroe County, Ohio.  They had three children of their own.

Cousin Polly Browning, Scott's aunt, states John and Sarah are buried in Buchanan Presbyterian Cemetery located on SR 78, Summit Twp, Monroe Co, OH. No marker was found in 2003 for either one.   Buchanan Cemetery was established in 1826 at the United Presbyterian Church. John died in Pleasants County, WV so may be buried on his farm in WV or a nearby cemetery.

There are burials of Hinds  in Malone Cemetery, Pleasants Co, WV and in Old St. Mary's of John M., Elizabeth and John W. (no dates shown)  Could this be John's parents?   (There is a Pleasants Co Cemetery on Indian Creek Franks Run & Broad Run, St Rt 18 at Blue-14.3 miles on Indian Creek Road.)

34.  William DEARTH,,, was born in 1780 in Westmoreland (now Fayette Co), PA.  He died in 1850 in Guernsey Co, OH.

William was born about 1780 in Westmorland now Fayette County, PA.  He attended the subscription schools of the district and secured a fair education.  He married first Susan Williams about 1798.  He married second Eliza Jane Huff about 1833.  Around the year 1800 he brought his mother and two sisters to Malaga Township, Monroe County, Ohio, then moved to near Jacobsburg, later sold his farm and took up another tract near Marietta, Ohio in 1833 where he continued farming until his death.

He was a noted fiddler, one of the old school and furnished the music for many of the dances held in his communities.  He was a lover of good horses and always owned some of the fastest in the neighborhood. He was a great hunter, and an excellent marksman with a rifle, usually bringing home a turkey from the famous "shooting matches" which were common in his day.

He was a man of much determination and the following story is told about him.  Showing his determination to follow out his desires under most any circumstances was related by a Mr. Hall of Marietta, Ohio who was an eye witness of the performance:  "About the middle of the winter of 1830-31 he desired to cross the Ohio River at Marietta, but the river was full of floating ice and no ferryman would undertake the dangerous trip.  He was determined to get to the Virginia side and after securing a long wood pole he stepped on a cake of ice nearest the shore, and then from it on to another, he was able after drifting a considerable distance down stream to reach the opposite shore, when after taking a swallow of liquor from a small jug he had in his pocket and waving his hat to those who had gathered on the Ohio shore to watch the feat, he climbed the river bank and proceeded on his journey".

He was a man of unusual strength and had the characteristics of his English ancestry as fox hunting was his favorite sport.  In letters in the possession of his descendants, that he wrote to his brothers in Pennsylvania, he describes some of his experiences of his deer and bear hunting trips.

It is believed all of his children were born in Monroe County, Ohio and many of them buried in Rich Fork Cemetery, Monroe County, Ohio.  Daughter, Sarah Dearth Hines Nalley, was buried either with her husband, John Nalley in Antioch Cemetery, Antioch, OH or Buchanan Cemetery.

He died in 1850 in Guernsey County, Ohio while on a visit with relatives near Zanesville, Ohio.  William DEARTH and Susan WILLIAMS were married about 1798 in Luzerne Twp, Fayette Co, PA.

35.  Susan WILLIAMS, was born about 1784 in Luzerne Twp, Fayette Co, PA.  She died in 1833 in Monroe Co, OH.  William DEARTH and Susan WILLIAMS had the following children:

                      i.  Ephraim DEARTH,,,, was born on 6 Oct 1800 in Luzerne Twp, Fayette Co, PA.  He was buried in 1867 in Old Cem (RIch Fork?) on Rt 60 nr Morgan/Washington Co, Line, OH.  He died 1867-Apr 1870 in Morgan Co, OH.  He was brought to Washington Co, Ohio by his parents and reared near Malaga, Ohio.  After his marriage he took up a farm near Lewistown, Ohio.  After the close of the Civil War he removed to Monroe Co, Ohio. He owned a large farm and a few years later oil was discovered in the county and his farm proved to be in the middle of the rich strike. Many wells were drilled on this property.  They later moved to Morgan Co, OH where he died. His will is located here.

Seventh Generation

68.  Randolph DEARTH,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, was born in 1752 in Deer Creek, Anne Arundel Co, MD.  He died on 11 Dec 1810 in Luzerne Twp, Fayette Co, PA.  He was buried on 13 Dec 1811 in Salem View Cem, New Salem, Fayette Co, PA.  Randolph was born at Deer Creek in Maryland Colony.  He was a young man when most of the Dearth family moved to Pennsylvania.  In 1777 all of the Death family in the Colony came west to what is now called Fayette Countly, Pennsylvania but which was then called Westmoreland County, Colony of Virginia.  The journy was made on horses, and the few household utensils and farming articles needed were brought over the mountains on pack horses.

Randolph Dearth the first of the line herein recorded of whom we have definite information, resided in Fayette County, PA, where he successfully followed the occupation of farming.  In 1777 Randolph married Elizabeth Maxwell, daughter of one of the early settlers of the county. She bore him two children: Maxwell who married Tamar Hibbs, and Randolph. (Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Vol II)

"He was an advocate of education.  The subscription schools were in vogue in his day and it was largely through his efforts that the first school house in the township was erected.  As a carpenter, in addition to his farming work, he assisted in the erection of this school.

Their farm home was near the village of Merrittstown, a thriving settlement at the time."  This is a quote of William H. Dearth in his manuscript "Descendants of William Dearth" in 1943, Pages 30 thru 33.

Randolph served in the Revolutionary War as a Sergeant in Stokley's Rangers of the Frontier, an organization of men from Washington and Westmoreland Counties.  He was discharged in 1783. His military service record is in the Revolutionary War Service Records on Card #5174, Roll #14.  On August 24, 1787 he was granted a Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grant of 250 acres for his military service.  Sources include: "Index to Pennsylvania's Colonial Records", Dr. Mary Dunn 1992, 2nd Edition, Pg 47, Randolph Death 13:529; "Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants", Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck, Pg 141.

LAWS PASSED SESSION 1831

HARRISBURG PA.

GEORGE WOLF, Governor

FREDERICK SMITH, Speaker of the House of Representatives.

WM. G. HAWKINS, Speaker of the Senate.

89. An act to enable GEORGE DEARTH, of Fayette County, to sell and convey  certain real estate.

That George Dearth, of Fayette County, administrator of the estate of RANDOLPH DEARTH, dec. late a soldier in the revolutionary war, be authorized to sell and convey a certain tract or plantation of land situated in the county which was formerly Westmoreland and to make and execute title for same, containing 250 acres, being the same land which was drawn for the said Randolph Dearth, as donation land #184 in the second Pa. district,15 Mar 1831.

There is a family burial plot on the old James Death farm called "Fruit Hill" where William and Randolph Death are buried.

Elizabeth, according to Colonial Records married General John Swan.  With her son William and daughters Nancy and Sarah, went to Ohio where she died in 1832.

Randolph DEARTH and Elizabeth MAXWELL were married in 1777.

69.  Elizabeth MAXWELL,,,,,,,,,,, was born in 1757 in Charles Co, MD.  She died in 1832 in Seneca Twp, Monroe Co, OH.  Elizabeth married Randolph in 1777.  She was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Maxwell, early settlers of the county.

She was an intelligent and well educated woman for her day.  Her life was made up of unnumbered acts of kindness, deeds of charity, kind words and living counsels as written by William H. Dearth in his manuscript.  He wrote " Golden treasures to the living are pleasant memories of those who have lived life full well, and in ripened years of advanced age have passed from the weak bonds of frail mortality and the scenes of their earthly labors to life immortal, and to the world of eternal blessedness . Such was the life and departure from earth of Elizabeth Death.  She was quiet, gentle and patient, never neglecting a duty nor failing in an act of kindness, or lacking on any occasion in any courtesy of life."

In Maryland Colony where Elizabeth spent her childhood years were to be found many remains of both the Mound Builders and the Indians. Through the Death lands there was an Indian trail towards the west, while at the Bald Frier Rocks along the Deer Creek valley in Maryland an Indian tribe made their home.

Colonial records state Elizabeth Trippe Maxwell, daughter of George Maxwell married General John Swan July 12, 1787.  Her last son with Randolph Dearth was born May 20, 1787.  John Swan died in 1824.  She with her son, William, and daughters, Nancy and Sarah, moved to Washington County (now Monroe County, Ohio) and located in what is now Seneca Township, near the present village of Malaga abut 1830 where she died in 1832.  The mystery is whether she divorced Randolph Dearth and married John Swan immediately after her last son was born.  Randolph did not die until 1810.  Most Dearth records do not show her marriage to John Swan.

On September 19, 1831 she wrote a letter to her children in Pennsylvania saying that daughters Nancy Brister and Sally Dement had died.  She asked that they come and take her back to Pennsylvania in a small wagon, which never occurred, as she died in 1832 in Seneca Township, Monroe County, Ohio.

Johannes Frederick STROHSCHNEIDER

Birth: ABT 1742 in Germany

Death: 5 NOV 1810 in Green Co., Pa.

John Frederick and Catherine moved to Frederick County, Virginia some time prior to 1782 when tax records show Frederick Strosnider there with a household of "nine white souls". As shown by the church records on the previous page, their first child Eva Margaret, was born May 2, 1761. Very likely several more or all of their children were born in Bucks County, but so far records have not been found. There are also no records of any service in the Revolutionary War, so I would assume that Johannes and his two sons were too old and his grandsons were too young. John Frederick and Catharine had ten children, and by 1800, three sons, Adam, John and Gasper and a daughter Catharine who had married Jesse Orndorff, had all moved to Greene County, in western Pennsylvania and, according to the 186O census, were living as heads of separate households. By the 1810 census John Frederick and Catharine were also there in a separate household near their son Gasper.

Since John Frederick died in Nov. or Dec. 1810, it seems likely that he and his wife came "west" to live near some of their older children in their old age. Marriage records in Frederick County, Virginia show that five of their children were married there between 1786 and 1800. All are mentioned in John Frederick's Will probated in December, 1810 with son John and John Shriver (brother of John's wife) as executors. Below is a copy of the will which is on file at the Courthouse in Waynesburg, Pa. Note punctuation and spelling.

    Frederick X Strosnider (Seal)

Signed, seal'd and declared in the presents of me

In the 1830 census Catharine and her children Adam, John, Gasper and Catharine Orndorff were all still living in separate households in Greene County, Pa. but very close together in Whiteley and Franklin Townships. Exact locations of the graves of John Frederick and Catharine are not known. Many old headstones in the Strosnider cemeteries in Whiteley and Wayne Twps. cannot be read. They are probably in the one in Whiteley Top. as it appears to be the oldest.

Eighth Generation

136.  William DEATH,,,,,, was born in 1724 in London, County Kent, England.  He died in 1796 in Luzerne Twp, Fayette Co, PA.  William emigrated to America in 1742 with his brothers James and John after the death of their father and their brother Thomas inherited the estate. The name of the ship is unknown.  It is assumed it sailed up the Chesapeake Bay and Port of Entry was Baltimore.  They settled on Deer Creek in Maryland colony a stream that empties into the Susquehanna River.  No land records have been found.  It is believed the land may have been leased.  They owned slaves and lived there until 1777.  In 1f777 all of the Death family in the Colony came west to what is now called Fayette County, Pennsylvania but which was then called Westmoreland County, Colony of Virginia.  The journey was made on horses, and the few household utensils and farming articles needed were brought over the mountains on pack horses.  The two elder Deaths were truly pioneers in the new country and wielded much toward shaping the early development of Fayette County.

They were members of the Episcopal Church of England in the Parish of St. George's.  The first church is said to have been located at the location of a later church called Trappe Church.  The church is no longer in use and the graveyard is grown up in weeds.  There is a point on the nearby creek still known as Death's Ford.

By the 1780's the name was changed to Dearth.  The cornerstone of the home built on land north of Uniontown, PA has Dearth inscribed on it.

William engaged in agricultural pursuits which consisted mainly in the cultivation of tobacco and corn.  His plantation was included in Harford County when that county was organized.  In the census of 1776 he is shown as living in "Susquahannah Hundred".  Little is known of his social or political life in that state.  He brought his family to what later became Fayette County in western Pennsylvania in 1777 near his brother, Edward.  On the old maps, William's land was known as the Porter land.

All the other members of the Death family in the colony came west at that time.  The journey was made on horses, and the few household utensils and farming articles needed were brought over the mountains on pack horses.

William was one of the first to make a permanent settlement in what is now Luzerne Township.  He took up a tract of land adjoining that of his brother's James and John near the site of the village of Merrittstown.  Here he again took up general farming.  This farm has been out of his descendants name for many years.  In 1943 It is now known as the Porter Farm.  The old homestead on the James Death farm remained in the family for a hundred and sixty years, or until 1937. Walter Larkin Dearth was the last of the name to inherit the original site selected by his ancestor in 1777.

Both of his sons served in the Revolutionary War.  The youngest, Isaac, moved to Washington County after his marriage and later lived in Greene County, Ohio.  Randolph settled in Luzerne Township, Fayette County, PA.

The first land deed on record in the County Auditor's office in Uniontown, the county-seat is that of James Death.  In it he transfers a part of his original tract to his son, Edward Death.  The youngest brother John owned a farm nearby.

There is a family burial plot on the old James Death farm called "Fruit Hill" where William and Randolph are buried.

Of the brothers James seemed to be the leader.  William was slow, dependable, and followed his brother James.  John, restless, full of the spirit of adventure, Indian fighter, soldier helped to expand our nation toward the western horizon.  He never married, did not leave any children and was killed in the Indian wars in Breathit, KY about 1800.

Ninth Generation

272.  James DEATH,,,,,,, was born in 1671 in County Kent, England.  He died in 1742 in London, Middlesex, England.  He was buried in 1742 in Knowlton Court, County Kent, England.  "When William "The Conqueror", Duke of Normandy, was gathering his Norman army for his invasion of England, many knights from Belgium joined the Conqueror. They crossed the English Channel at or near the present site of Dover and defeated the English King Herold and his army of defenders at the battle of Hastings in the year 1066.  William became the first Anglo-Saxon King of England.  The victors remained in the conquered country and the soldiers, who had now become settlers, were given land and at the same time were given surnames.   One of William's soldiers, John from the town of Ath was given the name of De'Ath, which is a place name, the De signifying from or of, and Ath, a town in Belgium. It is situated on the left bank of the Dender River, about 30 miles southwest of Brussels, in the Province of Hainaut.  Here in the dim distant past, over 900 years ago, the progenitor of all the Dearths in the world lived.

From the year 1066, the descendants of this family grew in numbers, and eventually became scattered into the various sections of England. Each branch used the spelling that suited the individual preference. We are concerned with the ancestors who settled in the eastern part of England, particularly the area in and around the town of Dartford in Kent County.  Here resided the first ancestor about whom we have meaningful information.  Dartford is about 20 miles due east of London."

The above is a partial copy from "De'Ath, D'eath, Death Family in England from 1066 to 1742", Research by G. R. Dearth, Mae Dearth and Diana Dearth, Manuscript by Gail Robert Dearth, 1982.  Mr. G. Robert Dearth and his wife, Mae with their daughter Diana drove many miles in England and pursued many an ancient record trying to track down the parents of James, William and John Death or De'Ath.  They visited in the Dartford Church where they made the Brass Rubbing and searched records, also visited Knowlton Court.  Diana Dearth lived at Wybridge, Surrey, United Kingdom.  Some Dearth family members researched the possibility of finding Dearth estate funds due the family of ancestor James but nothing was discovered.

It is believed James was a wealthy London merchant.  As was the custom the father left his fortune, business and estate to the elder child. James had four sons.  Three of his sons went to America and settled in Colonial America after their father's death and the eldest, Thomas, inherited the family estate "Knowlton Court", which is located about five miles southwest of Sandwich and ten miles northwest of Dover in Kent.  The chapel there has many commemorative stones to members of the Dearth family.

Thomas was an officer in the English Navy.  He was the owner of several vessels.  He came to America about the time of the Revolutionary War to visit his three brothers who were then living in Maryland Colony.  The accumulated wealth of which he possessed was the fortune that was supposed to have been left to his brothers in America, of which an effort was made to claim by American heirs in 1893 but without success.  The story is told that he lost the estate in a card game to the Duke of Northumberland. He immediately committed suicide by putting a gun to his head at the card table and now supposedly is haunting the place.  He is listed somewhere as one of England's ghosts.  The caretaker who took William Dearth through the place on a visit there claimed to  have seen it.

"The town church was built at the focal point of the settlement, beside the road and river at the ford.  It is believed there was a church there as early as 604.  The church contains many fine Monumental Brasses from the 15th and 16th century, including one of William Death and his two wives.  This is the first family member about whom we have significant information.  Somewhere among William Death's children, or their children, or their children is the ancestor of James Death born in London.

The Parish of Knowlton is very small, containing only 32 acres, nearly the whole of which, except a few acres, were the property of the D'Aeth family, whose mansion therein was beautifully situated on the knoll of a hill, commanding an extensive prospect over the neighbouring country, and of the adjacent Channel.  The house, which is large, was built by Sir Thomas Peyton, the south part still remaining, but the centre of the front wing has been modernized.  The offices which are extremely commodious, were built by Sir Thomas d'Aeth in 1715.  In the old part of the freewheeling are the arms of the Peyton's, on a chimney-piece, and the same again empaling Calthorpe, in every window, which sufficiently point out the builder; but the arms of Langley are no where to be found in this mansion.  The park, wherein the structure stands, contains about 200 acres.  It is finely wooded, and the soil, as well as the rest of the parish, extremely healthy and dry, though being rather inclined to chalk, is not very fertile.  The lands are chiefly arable, and unenclosed; the hills and dales are frequently and continue throughout; the whole arrangement forming the most agreeable prospect to the eye.  Adjoining the gardens at the back of the mansion, is the church and parsonage-houses." Partial copy of the "History of the County of Kent", Vol 3 by W. H. Ireland which is located in the Dartford Library.

Of the brothers James seemed to be the leader.  William was slow, dependable, and followed his brother James.  John, restless, full of the spirit of adventure, Indian fighter, soldier helped to expand our nation toward the western horizon.  He never married and did not leave any children and was killed in the Indian wars in Breathit, KY about 1800.

One of the family's most treasured heirlooms is an old bible printed at Oxford, England, in 1769, which James carried with him on his voyage across the ocean and journey over the mountains.  Two notches in the binding show where the straps of the packs pressed against it.

Death was the spelling used after arrival in this country.  By the 1780's or so they changed it to Dearth.  The cornerstone of the home they built on land north of Uniontown, PA has Dearth, not Death inscribed.

He married Sophia Simmons October 23, 1746, the second marriage for both.  They had five children. Cyclopedia of Fayette Co says Sophia is his second wife

James and Sophia received a recommendation from their Maryland church certified at Deer Creek December 2, 1777 stating that they lived in the Parish of St. George's in Baltimore, Harford County, England for over 30 years and were persons of unblemished characters for probity, honesty, and were kind, humane, and benevolent neighbors and proper members of the Church of England.  This was to be presented to their new church in PA.  Many of the signers were persons who signed a declaration which later became the Declaration of Independence.  In Bush, Maryland there is a marble monument honoring this meeting declaring independence from the King of England signed in March 1775.

The family migrated to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1777, with his brothers' families.  It is documented from the Land Office of the Department of Connulnity Affairs of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that James applied for a tract of land held by "tomahawk" right. and asked that it be surveyed several years before he took his family over the mountains to Fayette County, PA.  James filed his claim on 236 acres between Rushy Run and Dunlap's Creek on April 3, 1769, Claim Number 1928.  It was signed by the Honorable Peter Muhlenberg, Esquire November 29, 1787 as paid and warranted.  The patent to this land was not granted until 1789.   By that time James, Jr. and brother John also had patents to land adjacent.   Son George took up land several miles away over several mountainous ridges near McClellandtown.  The large red brick house has a cornerstone dated 1778 and was still standing in 1977 on a visit there by Mary Mae Campbell . The bricks were hand made.  At the top of the hill is located the old grave yard where these pioneers were buried on their own land.  Some of the inscriptions were legible but graves of James and Sophia could not be located.  The Yoder family living there had a saw mill and a dairy farm.

                          James Death, Sr.

                          1 Male 16 and up

                          1 female

He and his brother were truly pioneers in the new country and wielded much toward shaping the early development of Fayette County.  The first land deed on record in the County Auditor's office in Uniontown, the county-seat is that of James Death.  In it he transfers a part of his original tract to his son, Edward Death.  James owned slaves. The youngest brother, John, owned a farm nearby.

The old homestead on the James Death farm called "Fruit Hill" remained in the family for a hundred and sixty years, or until 1937.  Walter Larkin Dearth was the last of the name to inherit the original site selected by his ancestor in 1777.  John Brashear Dearth was the owner of the Dearth Bible belonging to James Death, Sr. The bible was printed in 1769 in Oxford by T. Wright and W. Gill printers to the Oxford University.  He also had the original patent for the 236 acres owned by James Death, Sr.

James and Sophia Death died in Fayette County and are buried in "Fruit Hill" farm cemetery.

Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Minnesota, and elsewhere. Most descendants spelled their name Dearth.

The original "homestead" is located on what is  now called Deth's Ford Road (formerly Death's Ford) in Darlington, MD. If you go to www.mapquest.com and do a search on Deth's Ford Road in Darlington MD (Harford County) you should see a map. Zoom out at least one level and notice the "creek" that bisects Deth's Ford Rd. The original homestead is  at the northern tip (closest to the creek) of the road south of the creek. The original home that the Death brothers built is now an annex--at the very back of the house--to the main home which is a very pretty colonial brick structure.  This land was the land that the Death brothers most likely worked as tenant farmers upon their arrival in 1742 until they moved to their own land in PA.

The first property that the brothers owned in the U.S. was in Luzerne county, PA., very close to the Monongahela River. This is in the  general vicinity of Uniontown, PA, and is located close to the tiny villages of Merritstown and Heisterburg--roughly NNE of Heisterburg. The land is located between Rushy Run and Dunlap's creek--only visibible on very detaild maps of the area. The Dearth Farm was known as Fruit Hill and the original home (as well  as cornerstone with the name Dearth carved on it) sits in a valley. The hill beyond the house--red brick and rather shabby) is now wooded but hides the family cemetary where some of the original family is buried. The headstones are badly worn by now and they sit flat to the ground within a grove of trees.

It's been many years since I visited the area but I can only describe it as "hard scrabble" and  it is not surprising to me that later generations of Dearths set out for greener pastures in Ohiembroidered on the back.o.

Interestingly, not far from Uniontown, there is (or used to be) a semi-professional baseball team that played in a park known as Dearth Park and they are known as Dearth Baseball. I have one of their warm up jacketes with the name

The home of Captain Henry Trippe was "Carthagena" (originally called Bath, renamed Carthagena (Carthagenia) in 1740; often confused with My Lady Sewall's Manor) (Poplar Street, south shore of the north branch of Warwick River) (ca. 1720s-present).  River Mile - Location is where Suicide Br. He married abt 1659 Mary Sprye born abt 1620.   She was daughter of Oliver Sprye and Johanna Unknown.

On July 19, 1658 the land now the City of Havre de Grace Maryland was assigned by the Lord Proprietor of Maryland to Godfrey Harmer. The city  traces its origin to the day in 1658 when settler Godfrey Harmer purchased 200 acres of land that he called Harmer's Town.  That tract is the heart of the present-day Historic District of Havre de Grace.  in 1695 the Lower Susquehanna Ferry made its first crossing of the river from Harmer's Town; it continued to operate for 170 years.   On June 30, 1659 the land was resassigned to Thomas Stockett to whom credit is given for the real beginning of this important center.   One of the first permanent settlers was Captain Stockett.  The town then became known as  "Stockett's Town".

The Marquis de Lafayette noted in his diary on August 29, 1782: "It has been proposed to build a city here on the right bank and near the ferry where we crossed.  It should be called Havre de Grace".  The citizens took his advice, and three years later incorporated the town as The City of Havre de Grace.  Later they honored Lafayette with a statue that stands at the main downtown portal, looking toward the ferry crossing that brought him to the place he called "Harbor of Mercy".
