Descendants of Christoph Klebe

I first discovered Christoph Klebe and Elisabeth Boettner in the Reichensachsen church records. I found a record of their marriage in 1842 and the baptism of a child in 1845. In 1846 Christoph sponsored the baptism of his nephew Christian Bitner in Reichensachsen, son of John and Anna Martha Bitner. There might have been more entries for the Klebe family, but I did not have the time to do a thorough search of the records.

This family appeared with several other Reichensachsen families on the passenger list for a ship that arrived in Philadelphia from Bremen, Germany in 1847. (See page XXX.) Their surname was spelled Kleve on the passenger list, but it is most certainly the same family. They appeared next in the 1850 census of Switzerland Township, Monroe County, Ohio.

Figure 1 – Johannes Böttner family

When Christoph and Elisabeth immigrated, they had only one child with them – Elisabeth, age 2, whose baptism was found in Reichensachsen. Their son Christian was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania after they arrived in America. This is consistent with the fact the Elisabeth’s two brothers, Casper Boettner and John Bitner, also settled initially in Berks County. By 1850 the Klebes moved to Monroe County, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

Please note that the following genealogy only includes four generations. I chose to limit the length primarily because this is not the direct line of John Bitner. Research on some of the lines might not be complete. In some cases I might have additional information about these families. Please contact the author if you are interested.

Generation One

     1.  Elisabeth1 Boettner[1], daughter of Johannes Böttner and Anna Dorothea Wagner, sister of John Bitner

was born on 19 Jul 1821 in Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.[2]  She was baptized as Elisabeth Böttner on 22 Jul 1821 in Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany. Johann Georg Otto sponsored the baptism.[3]  She married Christoph Klebe, son of Wilhelm Klebe and Anna Martha Hübenthal, on 15 Mar 1842 in Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.[4]  She died on 4 Feb 1898 in Monroe Co., OH, at age 76.[5]  She was buried in Feb 1898 in Bethel Cemetery, Switzerland Twp., Monroe Co., OH.[6]

She sponsored the baptism of Elise Böttner, daughter of John Bitner and Anna Martha Kilmer, on 22 Oct 1837 in Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.[7]  She immigrated on 8 Jan 1847 into Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA, on the ship Brig Bremen.[8]

Christoph Klebe1 was born on 3 Mar 1815 in Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.[9]  He died on 8 Sep 1883 in Salem Twp., Monroe Co., OH, at age 68.[10]  He was buried in Sep 1883 in Bethel Cemetery, Switzerland Twp., Monroe Co., OH.[11]  He sponsored the baptism of Christoph Böttner, son of John Bitner and Anna Martha Kilmer, on 4 Jan 1846 in Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.[12]  He immigrated on 8 Jan 1847 into Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA, on the ship Brig Bremen.[13]  He was a farmer in 1850 in Switzerland Twp., Monroe Co., OH.[14]  He was a farmer between 1860 and 1880 in Salem Twp., Monroe Co., OH.[15]

Children of Elisabeth1 Boettner and Christoph Klebe were as follows:

2        i.    Elisabeth2 Klebe was born circa 1845 in Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.  She married John Mentz on 25 Nov 1863 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.

Generation Two

     2.  Elisabeth2 Klebe (Elisabeth1 Boettner)[18] was born circa 1845 in Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.3  She married John Mentz on 25 Nov 1863 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.[19]  She died between 1877 and 1880.[20]

She immigrated on 8 Jan 1847 into Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA, on the ship Brig Bremen.[21]

John Mentz[22] was born in Sep 1834 in Germany.20  He married (--?--) (--?--) before 1859.  He married Louise (--?--) circa 1887.15  He died before 1910.20  He immigrated circa 1850.15  He was naturalized in 1852 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., VA.[23]

The John Mentz family has been dificult to trace. While there is quite a bit of information available, significant pieces of information are missing that prevent me from reconstructing the family with absolute certainty. According to the 1900 census, John immigrated in 1850. I have not yet found him on a passenger list. A John Mentz was found in the 1860 census living in Wilmington, Delaware with his wife and one child. Nobody of that name was found in West Virginia or Ohio for that year. In 1852 a John Mentz applied for citizenship in Wheeling, (West) Virginia. If this is the correct John, then it is probably not the John Mentz who was in Wilmington in 1860.

John did not marry Elisabeth Klebe until 1863, but the family included two older children (John and Andrew) in the 1870 census of Richland, Ohio County, West Virginia. We can assume from this that they were children from a previous marriage. John's marriage certificate states that his parents were Henry and Mary Mentz (see the International Genealogical Index entry for John). Sons John and Andrew were living together in Benwood, Marshall County, West Virginia in the 1900 census.

It is difficult to determine for certain the children of John and Elisabeth Klebe Mentz. Charles and Henry were living with them in the 1870 census of Wheeling, West Virginia. But neither John or Elisabeth could be found in the 1880 census. My assumption is that Elisabeth died before then. Given the spacing of the children, it is possible that Elisabeth died between 1878 and 1880, possibly in childbirth. However, there is no evidence of a child born in that period.

A strong indication that Elisabeth died before 1880 is that several of her children were found in the census of that year with Klebe relatives in Monroe County, Ohio. Henry, age 11, was living with Frederick and Mary (Klebe) Mehl in Switzerland Township.  Charles, age 13, and Mary, age 6, were living with their grandparents, Christopher and Elizabeth (Boettner) Klebe, in Salem Township. Catherine, age 7, was living with Charles and Caroline (Klebe) Krieger in Salem Township. William, age 9, may have been living with the Henry Lobstein family in Salem Township. I did not find George in that year. While only one of these children was enumerated with the surname Mentz, their ages and relationship to the families makes these assumptions fairly certain.

In 1880 Andrew was living as a boarder with the William Maxwell family in Wheeling, West Virginia. I did not find the father John or sons John and George in that year. In 1910 and 1920, William Mentz was living with two Lash cousins in Wheeling. They were sons of Conrad and Julia (Klebe) Lash.

In 1900 John Mentz was living with a wife Louisa in Bridgeport, Belmont County, Ohio. They had married about 1887. His son George was with them. Based on George’s age, he would have to be a son of Elisabeth Klebe. Louisa was widowed by 1910, so John must have died sometime before that.

10        i.    Charles Christopher3 Mentz was born on 14 Feb 1867 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.  He married Elizabeth Augusta Boles, daughter of Thomas Boles and Susan Marquis, on 24 Jul 1886.
