A LOCAL WOODSFIELD HISTORY TITLED

HIGHLIGHTS IN THE HISTORY OF THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF WOODSFIELD, OHIO

by Elizabeth (McElfresh) Ogden, Church Historian and John Ogden, 8th generation from original church member Levin Okey

This book describes the journey from circuit riders in Monroe County to the solid congregation that thrives in Woodsfield today.  This is an exciting story of dedicated ministers, abolitionists, a congressman who was an eyewitness to the Lincoln assassination, a female POW during the Civil War, ordinary God loving citizens who raised their families within the religious life of this church and many, many more.  For ten generations, devoted church members have attended this church in 4 different church buildings.  Today the members of the congregation are guardians of a historic pipe organ, priceless stained glass windows and a religious and historical story equaled by few.

Authors have been nominated as Ohio Historian’s of the Year.
