STEWART/STUART FAMILY

Ancestors of Maria L. Stewart, wife of Samuel Webster Robinson, trace back
 to
Scotland by way of Ireland.

Maria was the daughter of Charles Stewart and Ann Nichols

Charles Stewart married Ann Nichols in New Boston, NH and had the following children:
Mary Jane Stewart
Benjamin Nichols Stewart, who married Amanda Fay in Lowell, MA
Marie L. Stewart, who married Samuel Webster Robinson, also in Lowell, MA

When Charles Stewart died, his widow Ann Nichols married Timothy Hardy, and
Timothy and Ann had the following children:
Abigail A. Hardy
Alfred M. Hardy

Charles Stewart was born in Lyndeborough, NH according to Hollis, NH town records left by his widow, Ann Nichols Stewart Hardy. At the time of Charles' birth, there was only one Stewart family on record living in Lyndeborough, the Samuel Stewart family. It is assumed, for the time being, that Charles had to have been a son of this Samuel.

Work on this family is in progress. This is what is pieced together so far. Any input, additions or corrections, are welcome.

Samuel Stewart who is noted as living in Lyndeborough in the 1790 census as
head of household was born in Amherst, NH in 1756. He married
Lydia Ellinwood
in Amherst, NH in 1778. The following is a list of their children, probably only
a partial list:

David
Jonathan
Nathanial

Relief, who married Jonathan Wood Powers
Samuel, who married Elizabeth Parker Boutwell
Sarah, who married Philander Camp
Charles, who married Ann Nichols

Sometime before 1812,
Samuel Stewart moves with his family, children,
spouses of married children, to Lowell, Vermont, called Kerryvale at the time.
Samuel Sr, Samuel Jr, and Jonathan are mentioned in the 1812 town meeting
of Kerryvale. Assumption is made that the other family members were not mentioned
as they were either women or minors.

Charles Stewart returned to New Hampshire in 1817 and married Ann Nichols in New Boston.
Both were listed as being from "Society". Society land included the towns of
Lyndeborough, where
Charles was from, and Bennington, where Ann was from.

Charles' father, Samuel Stewart, who was born in 1756 in Amherst, NH was a son of Samuel Stewart
who was born in Ireland in 1716.

This Samuel, who was born around 1716 in Ireland, came to settle in Amherst, NH by way of Andover, MA, and married Sarah Tarbell of Salem, MA.  He now lies buried in the Amherst, NH
Town Hall Burying Ground.

Samuel Stewart who was born around 1716 in Ireland was a son of Robert Stewart.

 Robert Stewart
shows up in Andover, MA with his widowed mother Janette Forsyth and brother John and their respective children in 1718. Robert later moves with his family to Amherst, NH as early as 1749. John Stewart moves to Londonderry and became known as "Charter John".

Janette Forsyth ended her years in Colrain, MA

Much has been written on the
Stewart family going back from this point. The Stewarts are said to descend from King Robert II of Scotland. I will therefore
stop here. There are books about the ancestry of the
Stewarts of Londonderry, NH, and the Stewarts of Colrain, MA.  There is also the Stewart Clan Magazine, and the Genealogy and Biography of the Descendants of Walter Stewart of Scotland.
