This Indenture made on the twenty second day of May in the tenth year of the reign of our Soverign Lord King George the Third and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy three between Edward Dunlap of Hardwick in the County of Sussex and province of New Jersey ___?___ & Sarah his wife of the one part and David Langdon of the same place County and Province yeoman of the other part Witnesseth that the said Edward Dunlop and Sarah his wife for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred pounds Proclamation money to them in hand paid by the said Daniel Landon and Sarah his wife do hereby acknowledge and themselves to be there with fully satisfied contented and paid each and every part thereof do acquit exonerate devise and discharge him the said Daniel Langdon his heirs Exec. Administration and every of them forever by ___ present have granted bargained and sold alien enffeoffed released conveyed and confirmed and by these presents have granted bargained and sold alien enffeoff released conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do fully freely and absolutely grant bargain and sell alan enffeoff release convey and confirm unto the said Daniel Landon pursuant to the act of Assembly of the Province of Vew Jersey made for transferring of ___ unto possession are to his heirs and assigns forever a;; these two espective plots of land hereafter more particularly mentioned and described that is to____ situate in Hacketts Town in the township and County aforesaid which was conveyed to the said Edward Dunbar by Obediah Ayers as by his deed of Conveyance bearing Date the twenty seventh day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty eight and recorded in the Secretaries office at Burlington in Book A> B > of deeds job 202 Reference being hereunto had may more fully appeared and which is ____and Bounded as follows ...

Beginning At a stone in the__Road leading from David Reynolds House to Thomas Helms Mill being also Corner to a Lott granted by the said Obediah Ayers to John Hacketts from thence running South thirty three degrees fifteen minutes past two chains and fifty links to a post for corner thence South fifty __degrees thirty minutes West five chains and 78 links to another post in a partition thence back three North seventeen degrees East 4 chains and 26 links to a white oak tree corner also said Hacketts Town Lott and lettered E. D. thence by said Hacketts line 4th North fifty two degrees 30 min East two chains and 50 links to the beginning corner containing one acre and 7 perches of land.

The other Lott or piece of land hereby granted and conveyed or intended to be is situated in the TWP of Roxbury and County of Morris and now is commonly called and by the name of Vinyard and was lately the property of Thomas Helms Twenty acres part thereof was conveyed to said Edward Dunlop by Daniel Cooper Esq late Sherrif of the County of Morris_____by virtue of a writ of _____ _____ (Note: Bankruptcy, see other records) against the goods and chattles Lands and Tenements of the aforementioned Thomas Helms the residue being 16 acres was conveyed to the said Edward Dunlop by Lawrence Hagar the said Hagar having purchased the same of the said Daniel Cooper Sherrif aforesaid who sold it by virtue of the authority of the whole County 36 acres and is butted and bounded as follows

Beginning at the post of the Bridge over the Musconetong near Mark Thorisons Mill late the said Thomas Helms thence running South 84 degrees East 12 chains and ten links to a heap of stones for a corner thence South 20 degrees West 22 chains and 60 links top another heap of stones for a corner thence South 52 degrees East 4 chains and 40 links to another heap of stones for corner thence South 57 degrees West 14 chains and 15 links to a post or stake standing on the bank of the Musconetong thence bounded by the said river ____ courses thereof to the place of beginning containing 36 acres aforesaid start ____ together with all and singular houses edifaces ___gardens or orchards lands meadows cow pastures feedings trees woods under___ Vines, vineyards ways paths waters water courses _____ ____ mines minerals easement profits commodities advantages emoluments royalties ____ and appurtenances whatsoever to the said Lotts of land hereby granted or ___ so to be belonging or in any wise appurtening or which now are or formerly have been ___ ___ used occupied ____ or enjoyed or with the same or as part and parcel or member thereof and also ___ ___ remainder and re____ and rights of all and similar the said granted bargained premises and every part and parcel thereof with the appurtenances as well as equity as in Law to have and to hold the said to respective Lotts of land hereby granted or aforesaid or so intended to be and all and singularly those premises thereunto belonging as above mentioned and every part and parcel therewith the appurtenances unto the said Daniel Landon his heirs and assigns and to every proper use and belief of the said Daniel Landon his heirs and assigns forever and the said Edward Dunlop for himself his heirs and Exec, & Admin doth covenant and grant to and with the said David Landon his heirs and assigns that he the said Edward Dunlop and his heirs the said to respective Lotts ___ ____ and premises hereby granted ir mentioned to be granted wiyh the appurtenances unto the said Daniel Landon his heirs and assigns against him to said Edward Dunlop and his heirs and against all and every other person or persons whatsoever bring or lawfully claiming or to claim any estate, right title or interest or is or to ___ said grants and bargained premises or and part or parcel hereof with the appurtenance shall or will warrant and for ever defend by these presents and the said Edward Dunlop for himself his heirs exec & admin doth further covenant promise grant to and with the said Edward Dunlop and his heirs and every other person or persons whatsoever having or lawfully claiming or to claim any estate right title or interest or in or onto the said Lotts of land and premises thereby granted or any part or parcel thereof by from or under him___ them or any of them shall and will at any time or times hereafter upon to reasonable ___ of proper cost and change in the Law of the said Daniel Landon his heirs and assigns make and do effect unto and acknowledge or cause or procure to be made done or executed acknowledged all and every such further and other lawful and reasonable act and acts deed or deed device or devices conveyances or assurance in the Law and whatsoever for the further and better assurance and confirmation af aforesaid Lotts of land _____- premises hereby granted or mentioned to be granted with the appurtenances unto the said Daniel Landon his heirs and assigns as by hi\m or them or his or their cio\ouncel learned in the Law shall be reasonably advised or ___ but for the doing thereof the said Edward Dunlop his heirs or assigns be not compelled to travel more than 3 miles from the usual place of his or their abode In virtue whereof the parties to these presents have hereunto ____ set their hands and seals the day and year ___ above written Edward Dunlop (seal) Sarah Dunlop (seal)

Be it remembered______ on the sixteenth day of September 1773 before Mr Nathan Pettit one of the judges of Court of Common Pleas for the county of Sussex appeared Edward Dunlop and Sarah his wife The said Sarah being examined apart from her husband did acknowledge that of their own free will and accord sign seal and as their act and deed declared the above Daniel Landon for the ___ wherin mentioned

As tentatively transcribed by Ira Helms, Damascus MD August 19, 2000. The missing words do not affect the essential reading. The inserted notes are mine from other information. Additional study may establish a more complete transcription.

The substance is that Thomas Helms had owned the mentioned Lotts which had been seized and sold by the Sheriff owing to his bankruptcy and this is the transference of the total land to Daniel Landon, a part having been sold to the intervening individual mentioned.

"and Samuel Landon, the tract on which the Presbyterian Church at Musconetcong (Hackettstown) had already been built. (Snell's History of Sussex and Warren Counties, p. 584). The County Court Records show that he occasionally served on the Grand jury and in I769 he and John Bulkly were sued by Samuel Wiggins for YI3.I7.9. The nature of the suit does not appear. The last appearance of Daniel Landon as Grand juror was in August, I773.
In July I766 Daniel Landon had been bondsman for Cath_ erine Simson as Administratrix of the estate of Samuel Sim_ son of Hardwick, deceased (N. J. Archives, 33:387), and at the May I77i Term of the Sussex County Court he and Ben_ jamin Landon were witnesses for her in her suit against the Executors of Nicholas Misner. At the same Term, Daniel Landon was one of two sureties furnished, as required by law, in connection with the granting of licenses to the following tavern_keepers: William Hedden of Newton, Robert Breden of Hardwick and Stewart Martin of Mansfield_Woodhouse. On May 22, I773 Daniel Landon of Hardwick and his wife Ruhamah sold to Edward Dunlop, of the same place, mer_ chant, for Y,700. the 200 acre tract that he had purchased in I770, and on the same day he purchased from Dunlop for X3oo. a lot at Hackettstown, in Hardwick Township, contain_ ing a little more than one acre, on the southwest side of the main road; also 36 acres in Roxbury Township called the Vineyard, which was formerly owned by Thomas Helms, ad_ joining the Musconetcong River, near Mark Thompson's Mill, formerly Helms' mill. This deed was witnessed by Saml Lan_ don, Sen. (N. J. Deeds, Trenton, Liber A_K, P. 407).
Daniel Landon of Hardwick, "turner", made his will Sept. 28, I773. By its terms he left to his son Benjamin the house that Thomas Wells was living in in Morris County and half of the land there; also, "the cow he now milks", a colt, half of testator's carpenter tools, and his choice of three books. To son Daniel he left the other half of the land in Morris County, a yoke of oxen, "the Big Rone Hors", "the Bead he now Lyes in", the turning tools and half of the carpenter tools. To daughter Dabrah he left her bed. To his well be_ loved wife Ruhamah he left the house in which they dwelt,"

Fellow bondsman James Helms; both of said County Witness Thomas Brooks also in 1772 Dec 3, Inventory , Pounds 59.11.0, made by Daniel Landon and Ebeneezer Stephens." And From Sussex County , NJ Deed Abstracts Books A, B, C, D, E abstracted and compiled by Clyde E. Downing ([email protected]): Vol A page 23, 21 Sept 1779, Obediah Ayres Sen of Sussex Co to OBADIAH AYRES Jun. Of same place, yeoman ... Pounds 400. All that plantation where Obediah Sen now lives in Ghardwick, on the road leading to the courthouse, above LEVII JAMES... James SuttonÕs corner... JAMES LITTLE formerly conveyed to Thomas Helms.. Along a lot now in posession of Nathaniel Salmon ..,corner of the meetinghouse lot ... a lot formerly Edward Bowman ... a lot formerly Ebenizer Stephens..., a lot now in posession opf James Stewart formerly Daniel Landon...130 acres +, Signed by OBEDIAH and Deborah AYERS . Wit: EDMUND BOWMAN AND DANIEL LANDON. on 8 Aug., 1785 Daniel Landon gave disposition to Judge George Allen.
