PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THE STUDY OF TILMANNI HELMES AND TILMANNI FAMILIES AT MAYEN GERMANY, NEAR KOBLENZ
By Elfreide L. Wilde

This is special and preliminary

Some while ago, we found that there was a Tilmanni Helmes recorded at Mayen, Germany in the LDS IGI.

In addition, the main LDS Library has a book, "Familien-und Buergerbuch der Stadt Mayen fuer die Zeit des 16. Und 17. Jahrhunderts mit den Ortschaften Kuerreberg und Nitz" by Karl-Heinz Reif; Call # Europe Book area 943.42/M4.   It contains transcriptions from taxes, citizenships, courts, militia, and parish records.

The church records are available in film # 0585914 starting in 1643.

Here is what Elfie has found so far.

In the Church books, the entries are in Latin.   The notes are Elfie's notes abbreviated for this paper, and according to Susan Grimshaw, the following should be noted for spelling for some of the key names listed:

‘us' ending as in Helmus is a Latin ending for Helm

Joannes = John

Dinoysis = Denis, ordinarily used only in Irish Latin

Joanna = Joan

Christina = Christian

Jacob = James

Joes Petri = John Peter, Joes is short for Johis which is also John

Jois = Johis = John

Results:

 Tilmanni Helmes and Catherina

Births:

 Joannes, apr 12, 1701 bapt April 13m 1701, Godparents, Joanna Haupt, Barbara Schautlin

 Two twin female children (no names) b. Oct 4, 1705, Godparents, Antoni Zwink,
 Maria
Margaretha, and Christina Roecher Dionysis Knauf in a separate entry for those twins.

 No other children found for +/- 10 years,

Deaths:

 Christina infant dau. d. Nov 18, 1705

 Infant died Jan 2 1708

 Tilmanus buried March 1709, Presumably that is the father, Tilmanni Helmes

 No remarriage found so far for Cathrina

 Thus, Joannes (John) b/ 1701, is the only male offspring for Tilmanni Helms of Mayen.

 Further search for John is needed.

Another Helmes data found at Mayen:

 Joes Petri Helmes (Soldier at Koblenz) also sometimes spelled Jois, Joannes and
 Helmus and Barbara Becker

Births:

 Maria Appollonia, b, Dec 1, 1704, Godparent, Maria Appollonia Doretsch/Doertsch, Rev. Philippo Ruehl

 Maria Catherina, b. Apr. 2?, 1706, godparents, Maria Catherina Ringels, Michael Ringel

 Joes Matthias, b. Nov 17 1710, godparents Jonnes Matthias Paccio, Anna Maria Melchioris, both
  associated with the church.

 Maria Gertrude, b. Sept 5, 1714, godparents Theodore Mayer , Gertrude Kitsch

 Joannes Jacob, b. Nov 26, 1715, godparents Joes Jacob Spech, Anna Schmitz

Elfie rechecked the LDS IGI and found Tilmanni Helmert who married Elizabethea Broel Sept 9, 1710 in Morsbach, west of Siegen in the Rhineland area. That couple would also be roughly timely for us.

Summary comment:

Data for Tilmanni Helmes in Mayen did not lead to a direct connection with our Tilman Helms in NC. However, that area had Helmes who may well, have found their way into the stream of Germans who came here in early times, and the use by them of the Tilman first name is still interesting, as well as is the existence of persons with Tilmanni surnames in that area.   The why of the "i" ending was not resolved.
